In this episode, we sit down with King Adz, an author and film director who has been documenting street culture since the 2000s. He was the first to lift the lid of street art, producing a film about Blek le Rat which subsequently brought him to the masses and unveiled the blossoming street art culture of the 2000s. From there, his books and films have captured all elements of street culture, from fashion and food to street art and youth-grown subcultures. According to King Adz, street art imploded in the 2010s. What's interesting now is what's happening outside of the mainstream. When visiting Blek le Rat's studio in Paris this July, we discussed the history of his work and the future collaboration with Woodbury House. An artist inspired by Richard Hambleton, who went on to influence one of the most recognised street artists of all time: Banksy KEY TAKEAWAYS Street art is perhaps one of the purest expressions of the populace. It is the graphical representation of how the streets themselves are feeling. When we find ourselves struck and inspired by the works of others, it can push us on to want to emulate and transcend in our own way. Gallery works by street artists are a way of preserving the feeling, the mood, the place in time. It should be viewed as a permanent record of a specific moment. BEST MOMENTS 'For the first time, I saw street art. It was a revelation to me' 'It was something so new and so disturbing. 'The work in the street is 100% important. The work in the gallery is also important because if we don't show it there, there will not be a memory of what happened in the street' VALUABLE RESOURCES The Steven Sulley Study Blek Le Rat - https://blekleratoriginal.com/en/ ABOUT THE HOST The Steven Sulley Study is my take on success.

Leake Street Graffiti Tunnel, found underneath the platforms and tracks of Waterloo Station, is London's largest legal graffiti wall at 300-metres in length. The site gained fame after famed British street artist, Banksy, held a street art festival called Cans Festival (a play on The Cannes Film Festival) in the tunnel. Banksy had recognised the potential of the tunnel which had formerly been used as an access road for taxis to pick up passengers from the Eurostar. From the 3rd-5th May 2008, forty street artists from around the world - including Blek le Rat, Ben Eine, Sten & Lex and Vexta - transformed the grimy tunnel into a street art haven. Graffiti and street art are legally permitted in the tunnel meaning that artists can create works without fear of getting arrested by police. This ever-changing gallery now attracts street art tourists and graffiti enthusiasts from around the world and arches adjacent to the tunnel were recently transformed into bars and restaurants. The site was even home to a temporary cinema, The Lambeth Palace, to celebrate the release of Banksy's documentary Exit Through the Gift Shop in 2010.

This week, Steven talks to Blek Le Rat, one of the first graffiti artists in Paris, and a man who has been described as the "Father of stencil graffiti", and with a career spanning back from the beginning of the 1980's that has attracted the attention of not just the authorities, but the likes of Banksy. KEY TAKEAWAYS Visionaries influence emerging talents. Sometimes all it takes is a spark of genius at the right time, to set us off on our own creative journeys. Blek Le Rat took the creative jumpstart in New York and across Europe, and began the graffiti art scene in Paris, pioneering the art form and bringing it to one of the most culturally enlightened cities in the world. When we translate an art form, it's important that we put our own mark on things. Street art in different cities needs to reflect that particular city itself. Art is seen as a safe haven for investors, where money is not just be stored, but thrives and grows. Art has, and always will be, one of the most valuable commodities for investors. BEST MOMENTS 'It was something so strong in the street' 'The only contemporary artist I bought was Richard Hambleton' 'I didn't want to imitate American graffiti, because Paris is a different city' 'There's so much buzz about the street art sector' VALUABLE RESOURCES The Steven Sulley Study Blek Le Rat - https://blekleratoriginal.com/en/ ABOUT THE HOST The Steven Sulley Study is my take on success. Robin Thirdfloor and Rhea Blek are two of Durban's most original musicians. Back in the day, that would have been a problem but these days Durbanites are supporting unique and original sounds more and more so things are looking good for Durban's musical power couple. We sat down together the morning after a particularly raucous First Thursdays event put together by Roots Up and had a chat about making music work for you in the 031 and beyond. We get into being outsiders and how that can drive you creatively, The Law of Attraction (which I very incorrectly call "Manifesting Destiny", turns out that does not mean what I thought it did), and their dreams and fears for the future. https://almostperfect.co.za/ep-58-robin-thirdfloor-rhea-blek/

Skaldade Birger Sjöberg om just dödens obeveklighet.
