What percentage of your student body claims they are in a good place, but deep down, they feel like they can't share their true feelings? Sarah Kate Towlson hosts an insightful episode of Teachers Talk Radio titled: 'Clear the Path: Fewer Admin Tasks, Better Teacher-Student Connections.' This show delves into the challenges of teacher workload, focusing on how reducing non-teaching administrative tasks can foster deeper, more meaningful connections between teachers and students, especially amid the increasing needs of students today. With expert guests, including a former Headteacher from an all-girls independent school in the UK and an Inclusion Specialist with experience in the UK and UAE, the discussion highlights the importance of school trust, transparency and clearly communicating the value and purpose of tasks to staff. Together, they explore how enhancing these areas can empower teachers, improve student relationships and strengthen overall school culture.
As you spend days and weeks and years teaching, your skill increases. What happens, however, when you are in a class with a teacher who hasn't had the opportunity to develop their teaching skills as you have? It might be really easy to judge them and find fault. Kevin and Julie respond to a listener's feedback who is having a hard time not judging. How do we support more and judge less? https://teachingrestored.com
Given that summer is coming to a close for many teachers out there—or, for a handful, already has!—we decided to focus on that “thing” that we all go through as educators this time of year and that we all have our own opinions about: professional development for teachers. In this episode we're joined by Trevor Aleo, a full-time teacher and doctoral candidate who spends a lot of time thinking about, designing, and delivering professional development. The conversation focuses on what keeps “Teacher PD” from being a positive experience far too often as well as what “better” can and should look like. (Including what teachers need to bring to the table, too.)For those looking to explore more of Trevor's work, the best place to access it is at his website www.trevoraleo.com. We also recommend checking out his podcast Conceptually Speaking and the book he co-authored, Learning That Transfers: Designing Curriculum for a Changing World. Finally, thanks as always to: Alberto Lugo, one of Jim's former students, for writing and recording original intro music; Tom Csatari for allowing us to use his band's recording of “Woodstock” from their 2020 album, Garden; and Courtney Milavec for graphic design.* Find Tom's work at uncivilizedtom.com, and on Instagram @banduncivilized.* Find Alberto's work at djsynchro.weebly.com, and on Instagram @djsynchro. Wellness in educational spaces has become a trend that, while important, often falls flat in practice. That may be because teachers and administrators tend to forget that they have to actually make use of the time and tools given. Refilling your proverbial cup is the only way to ensure personal success and success for those in your charge. Good quality teaching is dependent on you being consistently rested and regulated for the classroom day. Similarly for administrators who balance many different types of duties daily, being well-rested and well-regulated is key to building a campus culture conducive to academic, emotional, and social success. Consider using the 8-8-8 rule and an Eisenhower matrix to prioritize tasks. The 8-8-8 rule divides your day into 8 hours of work, 8 hours of sleep and 8 hours of personal time spent on self-care, friends, family, hobbies, etc. An Eisenhower matrix can help you decide whether a task has to be done now, can be scheduled for later or delegated. With practice, these tools will become a natural part of your daily planning. Once you have a general idea of how you will prioritize your tasks, do these 5 things to ensure that you get the most out of your day without constantly working over a healthy capacity: 1. Decide how many hours you will work in a week. And then keep to it. My magic number was 45. 2. Delegate. Empower students. Have them manage the objective board, attendance, station timers and anything else that will give them a sense of ownership and responsibility. 3. Co-create with your students. For example, using student created review and test prep materials on Edpuzzle or Quizlet can build student confidence, skill, and capacity; and save you teacher time. 4. Stop using paper. Using an LMS like Google Classroom (or Canvas or Schoology if your district is so inclined) saves time and resources. Copier broken? Out of paper? No name papers? Make-up work? Put it all online. Create digital worksheets. Better yet, pay a niece, nephew or other older tech savvy student in your circle to do it for you. The time you take to do this ONCE will save you time all year so you can use you planning time to plan--and maybe even go to the restroom. 5. Go outside. This seems like a waste of time BUT research tells us that natural light boosts concentration, mood, energy and helps alleviate eye fatigue and headaches that come with florescent and computer screen lighting. Putting in long hours can feel rewarding, but if you aren't being smart about balancing that work time with other activities, you'll suffer and so will the students and staff you serve. If you love what you do and love who you are doing it for, love them enough to practice work-life balance in earnest. Yes, some ‘important' things may go undone, they sometimes do. But rest and recharging do not belong on the "do it tomorrow" list. Ever. --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/hedreich/message Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/hedreich/support

My sons have been Jiu-Jitsu devotees since the age of eight. I initially joined then but, regrettably, didn't keep up the practice, though they've continued to flourish under the tutelage of today's podcast guest coach Adam Smith. But Coach Adam is much more than a youth and adult Jiu-Jitsu coach. A lifelong Martial Arts competitor and teacher, Adam has won many traditional Martial Arts tournaments. After moving on to Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, and Mixed Martial Arts, Adam “Smash” Smith has earned a strong reputation as a high-level competitor and an expert-level teacher. Adam holds a Black Belt in American Kenpo Karate (Ed Parkers system), and a Black Belt in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (under Jiu-Jitsu Master Marcelo Allonso Novais). Now, Adam has three of his own Martial Arts Academies (SMASH Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu) and plans to continue to build a strong team dedicated to changing lives. With more than 250 current students and thousands of former students, “Smash” is known for his ability to teach anyone, starting as young as three years old. Adam has taught special needs students for over 15 years and has well-known expertise in working with a variety of people with different disabilities. At 18 years old, Adam moved into a fire station where he became a certified firefighter and emergency medical technician (a certification he has held for 12+ years) while gaining firsthand experience saving lives and property in the Spokane area. After growing up as a poor and underprivileged athlete himself, Adam started a non-profit (Give Back Tournaments) and hosts Jiu-Jitsu tournaments to raise funds that pay for athletic endeavors for underprivileged student-athletes. This past year, Adam had double hip replacements three months apart but is back training and working to win world titles. Rachel and Jim discuss the topic of teacher evaluation. Before you roll your eyes right now, keep an open mind. Teacher evaluation is required in many (all?) states. Rachel and Jim discuss how to make it better and how to tie observation and feedback into teacher evaluation. Rachel proposes that we focus on nourishing teachers with better systems first so that our teacher evaluation is reflective of true skill versus a system that fails to provide teachers with what they need to be successful. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/jim-martin4/message

In the 1830s, Rev. Thomas Hopkins Gallaudet's method of teaching reading to deaf children was evolutionary and became inviting enough that the then secretary of education, Horace Munn, adopted to teaching it to neurotypical children; the logic being, if the teaching strategy works for the deaf it must work wonders for all. It wasn't until much later that that it was discovered how ill-fitted such an extrapolation was. For far too long the culture has harbored a dreamy notion that gifted teachers are born and not made and they turn naive children into the learned ones with some magical powers and the techniques involved in teaching are a matter of personal will. What if that's simply a myth?On this episode, author, journalist, and CEO and co-founder of Chalkbeat, Elizabeth Green, discusses that becoming a great teacher is attainable to all through the mastery of specific learned key skills unique to the profession of teaching. As Thomas Jefferson warned us, “we cannot be a powerful nation and illiterate too”; we must acknowledge the dazzling intellectual challenge teaching poses and prepare accordingly.About Elizabeth GreenElizabeth Green is the CEO and co-founder of Chalkbeat, the nonprofit news organization dedicated to improving educational equity through local, independent, high-impact journalism. Since launching in 2014, Chalkbeat's reporting has spurred changes in education funding, legislation, policy, and practice and is regularly cited or republished in dozens of publications, including The New York Times, the Wall Street Journal, the Atlantic, Vox, and more. Elizabeth also co-founded the American Journalism Project, the first venture philanthropy firm dedicated to local news. Her book Building a Better Teacher was a New York Times bestseller and notable book of 2014. This week, Peter reminds his disciples that truly divine teaching is epitomized in the life and example of Jesus. The apostle warns the Church that there will always be false teachers of the Word, who only care about profiting off of it. The contradictions of their self-serving heresies juxtaposed with Jesus's self-sacrificial ministry show us just how dead wrong these false prophets are about God's grace and mercy. Peter witnessed firsthand the radically upside-down nature of the Kingdom of God, when the King of Kings and Lord of Lords knelt down to wash a lowly fisherman's feet, the night before the Messiah would give His life as a ransom for the World. What are some ways you are tempted to “self-serve” rather than to “self-sacrifice”? How are you being called to imitate Christ's better teaching?
