Listener-favorite and couples therapist Shane Birkel (host of The Couple Therapist Couch podcast) is back! Though last time Shane talked about how men can be strong but soft, this episode tackles the other side of the #1 issue Christa is seeing with couples these days: women who have learned to use their voice but how now she is coming across abrasively in a way that hurts versus helps in their marriage. This is specifically about tone, delivery, and how empowerment can accidentally create new imbalances. Shane shares the techniques he uses with his couples to help wives recalibrate without going back to silence, and husbands re-engage without shutting down. We cover personal anecdotes, family systems dynamics between husband and wife, and practical tools for finding the healthy path between silenced and too strong. If you've been told you're "too much" or if your spouse has shut down since you found your voice, this episode is for you. Watch on YouTube here! Protein chips, fiber-fortified popcorn, the Midwest "meat and potatoes" trap — those are just some of the topics we discussed with Laura Birkel, a registered dietitian at Emplify Health. Birkel is also 23 weeks pregnant, so we had to ask her what a dietitian does with those weird food cravings. Other topics discussed on the show included a rapid-fire segment on how good or bad these items are for you: coffee, milk, wine, soda, probiotics, and cooking oils. We also dug into the difference between whole foods and ultra-processed items, like why those frozen french fries aren't the same as the potatoes from your garden. Birkell also shared some strategies — not just with our own diets — but how to help get a loved one to eat better. I shared with her a story on how my dad loves corn, biscuits, and potatoes, thinking these things are healthy since he did grow them in the garden (well, not the biscuits). Lastly, we talked AI and meal tracking apps and how those can be utilized to help people with their diets without becoming overly self-critical.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Have you thought about couple's therapy? Or, perhaps you have tried therapy but it really wasn't a fit. In this episode we will talk about the couples' therapy experience and what you can expect, receive, and gain from a good couple's therapist. Top Take-A-Ways: The difference between normal and healthy and what it means to be in a healthy relationship. Empowerment, self-worth, and “other based” esteem and why having a foundation of value is the essential first step in relationships. Understanding “carried emotions” from one's past versus present-day emotions and operating from the “wise adult self” instead of the wounded child Why relationships are a choice – for both partners – and why therapy will only work when both partners are willing to do the work. Shane Birkel is a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist who sparks change in people's lives and relationships. He helps individuals and couples who want to feel satisfied in their connection with their partner but feel like no matter what they do it just leads to stress and frustration. He supports them in exploring their history and uncovering patterns they may not even be aware of so that they can begin to have more control of their emotions and be excited about their relationship again. In his years of experience working with individuals and couples with relationship issues, he knows that you have the ability to make big changes in your life. If you are ready to do the work, you will be amazed at how capable you are to explore parts of yourself you never knew existed. The process of therapy can allow you to grow more quickly than you ever have before.
