today we have a lovely episode for you with the wonderful Eleni, mother to three girls including 3.5 year old twins, Cleo and Lola, and 10 month old Hazel. Eleni joins us to share her motherhood journey, including her challenging pregnancy and planned caesarean section birth with her fraternal twin girls, as well as how she navigated the newborn days with two babies. She shares her feeding journey with the twins, covering tandem breastfeeding, triple feeding and the decision to move to formula feeding. Eleni goes on to reflect on how she knew she was ready to have a third child, and her subsequent pregnancy and birth with Hazel. Eleni had a planned gentle caesarean section with Hazel and shares her c-section preferences that shaped this birth (around the 40 min mark of the episode). Eleni gave birth in a public hospital, where she wouldn't meet her OB until the day of delivery, and reflects on the process of researching her birth preferences, as well as her positive experience with her medical team. For her second birth, with toddler twins running around, Eleni invested in a postpartum doula so she also touches on her decision to engage a postpartum doula and what the emotional and practical support looked like. (MEG) My Birth Preferences & Learning About Advocating for Yourself In Labor When I first got pregnant I had never even heard of the term “birth plan” because my only exposure to birth was in the movies and TV. I just thought your water breaks in the middle of the grocery store and you frantically drive to the hospital. But I quickly learned that's not exactly how it goes. One of the biggest things I've done over the last few months is get really familiar with the birth experience and what my options are and how to advocate for myself when at the hospital. I hope this episode helps if you're in the same position I was a few months ago, completely unaware you can even HAVE birth preferences or a “plan”, because this has helped me become so much more calm and even slightly excited for the birth of my babies. ↓Follow us on social media: TikTok: https://www.tiktok.com/@megandmikedomarriage Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/megandmikedomarriage Hypnobirthing Course: https://thepositivebirthcompany.co.uk/the-hypnobirthing-digital-pack-us?gclid=Cj0KCQiA3uGqBhDdARIsAFeJ5r1zy2kK5GzckJuXyc0VEADSkb60MnUXtByHc4bktgC-V_0xaPoQYkwaAonYEALw_wcB Birth Spotify Playlist: https://open.spotify.com/playlist/7xoc4ZXFLMapjzZpha6XDU?si=IsPlo8HwSvyA77dPqWezKQ

Today's conversation with birth doula, Shawni McCoggle, is all about the importance of having birth preferences verses birth PLANS. Because we all know that labor and birth is so unpredictable and ultimately our bodies and our babies are going to do what they are going to do! However, at the core of this topic we really believe in the power of education when it comes to what your options are for your birth experience, and how that alone can help you feel more in control. The end of the episode even includes Shawni's birth story. It is a perfect example of how even though it went completely different from her original plan, she still felt so comfortable and thinks positively of her birth experience because of the knowledge and power she had. As birth professionals, we are aware of the power of language. This is especially true when it comes to the language used surrounding birth planning vs birth preferences. A birth plan can often be viewed as a pass or fail endeavor. While creating a list of birth preferences can open the door to communication and flexibility. Join us as we discuss the nuances of the language surrounding how we help a client identify and express their desires for how their births may unfold.
In this episode we chat to Jessica who lives with her husband and two children in Torquay at the start of the beautiful great ocean road in Victoria.Jessica reflects on how she made the decision to not make a birth plan for her first birth and just go with the flow, but knowing what she knows now she wished she had prepared herself a bit better- a sentiment that rings true for many of us.Her first birth ended in an emergency caesarean following an induction at 40 weeks for high blood pressure readings. For her second birth, she knew she wanted to do things differently and hired a doula to support her in a private hospital setting and this time made a birth plan. However, things didn’t quite go to plan. With the emergence of COVID-19 during her pregnancy this meant that her doula was no longer able to support her in labour while in hospital. Although disappointing at first Jessica didn’t allow this to deter her spirits and she decided to keep her doula on to support her in labour at home alongside her husband until it was time to head into hospital.Jessica’s story is a great example of how birth can still be an empowering and positive experience, even if your birth goes in a different direction to what you had intended it to.~ Notes ~Post Natal Depression/Anxiety support: If you or anyone you know is affected by PND symptoms particularly at this time of COVID-19 please don't hesitate to contact the following support networks:The Gidget Foundationhttps://gidgetfoundation.org.au/get-support/,PANDAhttps://www.panda.org.au/info-support/pandas-national-perinatal-anxiety-depression-helplineBeyond Bluehttps://www.beyondblue.org.au/get-support/get-immediate-supportCopehttps://www.cope.org.au**VBAC Birth Stories features women's lived experiences. This week I'm reflecting back on my first year as a Mom. I'm sharing my own personal experience with pregnancy, a bit about my birth, and my postpartum experience. This is an open, honest, and vulnerable episode, that is what this podcast is all about - talking about the hard and messy times, but also sharing the beautiful moments I'm incredibly grateful for.

It's back to Hypnobirthing, and less about my 'busy' life, and tonight we are talking birth preferences. This week we're talking all about BIrth Plans or as we like to affectionately call them... Birth Preferences or Birth Wish Lists. We know these are all just words used to define the same basic idea. But we're also aware that as we put lots of energy into an idea, it becomes more challenging to process a plan that doesn't go exactly as we'd imagined.
A hot topic between moms, moms and their care providers, and between moms and their birth partners or doulas. How important is having a birth 'plan' sometimes called a 'birth preferences' or 'birth wishes' list? Can we really ‘plan’ for birth? Why have one and what typically goes in one? We answer all these questions and more, in this in-depth episode, examining the different sections that make up a birth preferences document and what you may want or not want to consider, when preparing for your big day! Share your experience with us! Leave us a comment on the podcast link (on whichever podcast listener you’re tuned in to!), and don’t forget to rate and subscribe to the show so we know you’re listening and to help get the episode to other mamas out there! Catch us in November with a brand new episode! With love, Shereen & Ele

Currently juggling breastfeeding, nappy changing & swashbuckling pirate adventures, I also find time for the odd rant on the blog, and a little bit of pregnancy reading too. I’m a chiropractor on maternity leave, spending my CPD studying babies and how to best care for them from a chiropractic perspective. I’m mum to two boys, born at either end of the scale. I am on Facebook and Twitter, and you can also follow my day to day life on Instagram if you so desire! (I did have snapchat for a bit, but soon decided it was too much like hard work!) Todays show I decided to do things a little differently today, and to just talk. I really believe that birth preferences and creating a dream team is what made the difference for me in terms of my mental health second time round. Whilst my birth was beautiful, I had to contend with a hospital stay from day 2-7, which could easily have tipped me back into my PTSD. Thankfully, it didn’t, and I’m convinced that the major factor was my prior planning a.k.a the birth preferences. In this episode: Find out why birth preferences are so important Understand how they were make or break for my mental health during pregnancy, following the birth trauma related PTSD I suffered first time around What it takes to create a dream team Why your birth partners should be chosen with care Resources: Take a look at my birth stories – my EMCS with George and my HBAC with Freddie Coming soon (please check back!) will be my actual birth preferences
