What can you or your organization do to make the workplace more inclusive for people with autism?Recently, RFK Jr., the U.S. Secretary of Health and Human Services, attracted considerable criticism following his disparagingly blanket statements about people with autism. Many people in the autism community lead fulfilling lives full of love, joy, and productive work—despite the hapless and hopeless depiction of this population that RFK shared. This is an excellent moment to draw attention to my conversation with Amanda Kelly, the president and CEO of Firefly Autism and one of the founders of the groundbreaking Colorado Neurodiversity Chamber of Commerce (CNDCC). It's impossible not to look at our growing talent shortage in this country and ask: why aren't we hiring neurodivergent and autistic people? In this episode, Amanda dives into how we can all make our workplaces more welcoming for neurodivergent individuals, who make up one-fifth of our population. Whether you're neurodiverse or neurotypical, Amanda's jaw-dropping stats and pursuit of equity will inspire you:Learn about the shocking lack of career resources for autistic adults;Discover how organizations can make their workplaces more inclusive, for neurodivergent people and beyond;Break down the ongoing issues of neurodiversity and inequities in diagnosis; Understand the unique gender component of autism and its impacts.Related Links:Firefly Autism - https://fireflyautism.org/Colorado Neurodiversity Chamber of Commerce - https://www.cndcc.org/Connect with Amanda on LinkedIn - https://www.linkedin.com/in/amanda-d-kelly-d-psych-2b5957a0/RFK Jr., “Autism destroys families” - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KPxTnX1sgJc“Addressing the ‘Cliff' for Adults With Autism Spectrum Disorder” - https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/33539916/NYT, “The Dangerous Race to Put More Children to Work” - https://www.nytimes.com/2023/03/24/opinion/editorials/arkansas-child-labor.htmlAutism Recovery Network, “Why Is the Autistic Unemployment Rate So High?” - https://autismrecovery.sg/why-is-the-autistic-unemployment-rate-so-high/Episode 390, How to Manage ADHD in the Workplace - https://www.bossedup.org/podcast/episode390TAKE ACTION with Bossed Up - https://www.bossedup.org/takeactionBossed Up Courage Community - https://www.facebook.com/groups/927776673968737/Bossed Up LinkedIn Group - https://www.linkedin.com/groups/7071888/

2025 Kick Off and Looking for Potential As 2024 draws to a close, we're left, as usual, staring into the abyss of a new year… upheaval nationally, internationally and even in our tadpole pond of purebred dogs has left all of us off balance at some level. Poised precariously here on my rickety soap box, I hope you'll join me on a journey of retrospection, through a few glimmers of hope and on to a couple new year's resolutions. Eight years ago this month, the first Pure Dog Talk episodes dropped just in time for the AKC National Championship shows. I racked up 10s of thousands of steps dropping flyers on every grooming table, interviewing treasures of our sport and gathering support for this novel way of sharing 20th century knowledge in a 21st century way. Pure Dog Talk was the very first podcast dedicated to purebred dogs. Today we have a couple million downloads and have reached nearly 400 thousand listeners globally. Several major corporate sponsors and a couple hundred Patrons keep the lights on and the mp3s rolling so that YOU can stay on top of news, interviews, reviews, events and ideas. We've shown up in the AKC Gazette (shoutout and thanks to the Gazette crew!) I just found myself quoted in a TikTok posted to a Reddit “millennials” thread fgs… I love hearing from all of you all the time. About how Pure Dog Talk “saved your life” or made it better or saved your dog's life. PS We've added a page to the website where you can upload your stories complete with photos! Check it out on the Testimonials tab at pure dog talk dot com. If you'd be so kind, indulge me while I take this opportunity for some shameless promotion. If you find Pure Dog Talk has helped you or someone you know, please consider joining our paid Patrons. This funding covers only overhead – website, audio editing and more – not me personally. When I launched the Patrons in 2018, I was paying for the podcast out of my pocket and eating a lot of peanut butter sandwiches. A lot has changed since then (although, I still eat a lot of pb&j). The crowdsourced funds from Patrons of the show have enabled the growth and professionalization of the website, continued the outstanding production values of the pod and made us able to keep growing this resource to reach new audiences. Your Patrons membership adds value to the pod by initiating you into a devoted community of purebred dog enthusiasts including judges, handlers, owner handlers, newbies and master breeders. Patrons only After Dark gatherings each month let us hash out problems, share ideas, stand in community with one another and gain knowledge. Visit https://puredogtalk.com/patron/ and select your Patron Package. You can join us for as little as $10/month or save 10% with an annual Patron membership. Come on over and join the best community in dogs. Aaaaaand, Starting Jan. 3, our new Patrons Only pod, Unleashed, delivers “let your hair down” episodes on all the hot takes in purebred dogs. Mailbag topics, commentary and insight with your favorite guests. In our first episode of the new show, Amanda Kelly joins me with thoughts on "How Not to be a D*ck at the Dog Show”.... Patrons, BOLO an email with access deets!~ And, speaking of new stuff….. We're SUPER excited to announce that, after EIGHT years in the...

EAB's Alice Shindelar and Amanda Kelly discuss how virtual campus tours are created and why they're so popular with students and university recruiters. They explain the uses for different interactive elements, share basic dos and don'ts, and talk about what differentiates a truly exceptional virtual tour from one that is average at best. They also offer tips to university leaders on how to collaborate with a virtual tour vendor to create tours that are just as useful for the university as they are for prospective students.
Gatekeeping Within Our Breeds: A Conversation with the Patrons Host Laura Reeves is joined by members of the Pure Dog Talk Patrons group in an extended deep dive on the question of gatekeeping within our breeds. Members of this private group share their opinions, thoughts and mitigations on placing dogs, using limited registration, educating puppy buyers and more. Spinning off a podcast conversation several years ago with Amanda Kelly on the topic of are we protecting our breeds into extinction, Laura and the members of the group discuss the various perspectives on the topic. “This is a group where we talk about a lot of things and very rarely do we share those things into the public realm,” Laura noted. “But we all thought this was a pretty important topic and that we all had things we wanted to say about it and we wanted to share that with the larger Pure Dog Talk community as a podcast." One side of the conversation is the position that we have a lot of problems with new people coming to dogs and you have a new person who's excited to do it and the gatekeeping is preventing them from doing so. On the other side of the discussion is the opinion shared by a long-time breeder in the group. “I do not want my only okay, mediocre dogs in the conformation ring. That is not my goal. I don't care how many champions I do or don't finish as a kennel,” Karyn Cowdrey said. “What I care about is that what represents my kennel be of, in my opinion, sufficient quality. I would be proud to have kept it I would be proud to walk into the ring with it and honestly if I deem it show ring worthy to me then it's breeding quality and I keep my name on that dog until at least a certain amount of criteria are met by that person if they're a new person.” Education of new and potential buyers was also frequently mentioned in the dialogue. “I'm very big on education,” Sandy MacArthur said. “And I can give an example and I will not name the person nor the breed, but there's a person who went in the dog world and was looking for a ‘breeding pair' … this was 30 years ago in the 90s… emailing everybody ‘I'm looking for a breeding pair'… We all know that's an instant red flag and this person got put on everybody's do not sell list. “Someone in the breed she was interested in decided to take this person out to lunch and have a conversation. By the end of the conversation at lunch, she sold that person a bitch on a co -owned contract. This person put all the work into it, all the research, drove everywhere every weekend, did everything right, and 30 years later is a well -known dog person. Let's just say that. Somebody took their time to pull them aside 'cause they didn't know. They thought that what you do is you get a breeding pair. They had no idea.” If you would like to join these types of conversations, as well as support the work of the podcast in education and mentoring, please visit the website and sign up to join us! Amanda Kelly on Sportsmanship, Spine and #squeezethejoy Amanda Kelly, Fwaggle Toy Manchester Terriers, joins host Laura Reeves for part two of their wide-ranging conversation discussing subjective sports that was sparked by this year's Winter Olympics. Today's topics touch on sportsmanship, “spine,” mentorship and Amanda's new hashtag, squeeze the joy, about tasting every last drop of joy the sport brings its competitors. Sportsmanship “We see the Olympic spirit in many stories every time there's Olympic Games,” Kelly said. “This year the one that really stood out to me was (a skier) from Finland who won the gold in cross country skiing. (Then) he waited for the last place skier to cross the line before he would celebrate his gold. Because he had respect for the fact that every person in that race, no matter where they finished, had worked really hard to get there. I think that maybe we need a little bit more Olympic spirit in our sport. Spine = Courage “This type of subjective sport tends to draw people who are looking outside of themselves for reassurance and validation. Dog shows are an ego sport. We do it on some level for some sort of return in that area of our lives. Thinking about what that is and being able to overcome the challenges that come with whatever reason we're doing it for. I think that's a self-awareness piece. “(That self-awareness gives you) the spine to be able to stand your ground and say ‘it doesn't matter to me if it's unpopular. It doesn't matter to me if all of the cool kids are doing it and I don't want to. I'm gonna do what I wanna do the way I wanna do it based on my own opinion and my own values.' Perspective “I really think that in the dog world we have to be cognizant of context for the importance of our sport and the people in it. There's a lot of stuff going on in the world right now and there's a lot of stuff that's going on in the world right now that is a a lot more important than who wins at the dog show. A little perspective is number one. Number two, do not ever drink your own koolaid. It doesn't matter who you are in the dog world, your importance, celebrity, “fame” is a tadpole in the mud puddle of life. When Ernesto Lara, or anybody really, goes to the grocery store, people are not queuing up for an autograph. #squeezethejoy “Sometimes we lose sight of what we're doing and why we're doing it. I took a really great pleasure in watching the last Olympic competition for the amazingly great snowboarder Shaun White. He finished fourth. (He was) an incredible competitor, had an incredible career and when he finished, he said that this time it wasn't really about winning, it was about squeezing the joy out of it. I thought, ‘wow, what a great way of looking at our sport. Squeezing the joy out of the moments that you're there means making your trip about more than the ribbon that you leave the ring with.” Listen today to hear the entire conversation. Listen https://puredogtalk.com/captivate-podcast/521-competing-in-subjective-sports-dog-shows-vs-the-olympics/ (HERE) for the first part of the discussion.
With AI technology changing so quickly, we often need to step back and take a big picture look at the market. In this episode, Manoj Suvarna of Deloitte joins Frederic Van Haren and Stephen Foskett to discuss the many products and applications of AI in the enterprise. It is important for business executives to survey the many ways that AI and data science are being applied across the enterprise and try to find ways to leverage this work in other areas. Deloitte recently conducted a survey of companies around the world to get a sense of the many ways AI is being adopted. 92% of those surveyed said that AI is a competitive area these days, and 83% realize the value of multiple ecosystems. A majority of businesses see AI as a strategic differentiator that they want to invest in, while most of the rest are trying to determine the value of AI to the business. Stephen: Are there any jobs that will be completely eliminated by AI in the next five years? AI is coming fast to the information security world, both in terms of tools and threats. In this episode, InfoSec professional Girard Kavelines discusses the reality of AI in security with Chris Grundemann and Stephen Foskett. With AI assistance on both sides of the security divide, will we see an escalation of attack and defense? On the defense side, threats have evolved to advanced attacks that look like system processes and legitimate connections, and machine learning can help process more data than ever before. ML-based systems can also judge unknown threats that a rules-based system would never catch. On the other hand, we are already seeing AI used to generate more effective attacks, from phishing to fuzzing APIs. Three Questions: Chris Grundemann: Are there any jobs that will be completely eliminated by AI in the next five years? Stephen Foskett: Can you think of any fields that have not yet been touched by AI? Data science and machine learning developments can't have an impact if they don't get into everyone's hands. In this episode, Amanda Kelly of Streamlit joins Chris Grundemann and Stephen Foskett to talk about the challenges and opportunities in bringing data science to everyone's hands. How can we enable marketing, sales, marketing, and other elements of the business to access data and make informed decisions themselves? Data science teams have to meet business people where they are to better answer their questions rather than trying to create a perfect model in a vacuum. Streamlit helps to productize python scripts with a complete and flexible front-end and easy deployment, making it easy to share and iterate. These micro apps foster collaboration and interaction between data science and the business. Three Questions Stephen: Is AI just a new aspect of data science or is it truly a unique field? Chris: Can you think of an application for ML that has not yet been rolled out but will make a major impact in the future? Leon Adato: What responsibility do you think IT folks have to insure the things that we build are ethical? Gests and Hosts Amanda Kelly, Co-Founder of Streamlit. 445 – Stud Dog Shopping with Amanda Kelly Amanda Kelly, Fwaggle Toy Manchester Terriers, joins host Laura Reeves to talk about their favorite thing, shopping! Not for shoes but for stud dogs. Finding the right dog for your specific bitch, your breeding program as a whole and the breed in general, is a process that takes time and effort. “When you've been breeding for a long time, you don't really stop and think about what that process is,” Kelly said. “I think that there's a couple of foundational pieces that go into choosing a stud dog. They may not seem like they're directly related, but they really are so important. “I think the first step is to look at your own bitch and your own breeding program and what you want to accomplish with a given breeding. One of the things that I keep coming back to is that you have to think about what your priorities are in a breeding. Before you start looking at any stud dogs or what anybody else has or what might be available or what might be possible, the very first thing to do is to really sit down and look at the bitch that you want to breed. What are her strengths? What are her weaknesses? What are the strengths and weaknesses of the family of dogs that she comes from. “This whole process is really about research. You're going to research a stud dog but you also are going to look really carefully at your family of dogs that you're working with. You can learn so much about what will be or might be produced by looking at what has been produced. When we start out you kind of feel like you're at a disadvantage because XYZ breeder has been breeding for 25 years and they know all of these dogs. That's true. They have seen them over time, collected information, but some of that information really is available to everybody. “Look at your bitch and think to yourself, ‘OK, were any of her littermates bred? What about dogs that are out of the same mother. Have they been bred? What about this bitch’s mother? Strong bitches are the cornerstone of any breeding program. What did the mother produce? What has the sire of my bitch produced? “All of that information is going to fit together like pieces of a puzzle and give you a really clear idea of not only the strengths and weaknesses of your individual bitch but of perhaps the bloodline and what it's producing. “You can ask 25 breeders and you will get 25 different opinions of the relative merits of any approach to breeding and none of them are wrong. So the experience of your breed mentors, particularly folks who are working in the same group of dogs that you are within your breed, are really invaluable. “There's a longer term plan rather than 100% just the breeding that's in front of you. I also like to think about what the priorities are for my breed. Coming from a small breed, there's some elements I think of gene pool management. As a breeder in a small breed this is something that's top of mind for me quite often in that there's some gene pool management pieces that I think are important for me to consider as far as what's the best for my breed’s diversity.” Support this podcast

Breeders Part 2: Family, Friends and Mapping a JourneyTop Breeders discuss building a family of dogs with small numbers and defined goals.Wendy Paquette, Amanda Kelly and Chris Heartz return to finish their conversation about building a family of dogs, using the standard as a driver and mapping out a plan. Wendy: “What I've done over the years is lease males from other breeders. I finished (the dogs) for them in Canada and kept them for about six months to a year. I bred 6-10 bitches to that same dog. So, what I did was, I could tell whether there was consistency or not. And I would keep one or two out of every litter and send the dog back home and go from there with the offspring.“So then, I had a basis with one dog being dominant and if I felt that dominant dog was a great producer consistently, then I doubled on it. But if it wasn't, oh well, I had bunch of pets that year. “The Breeders that just breed to the dog next door or the dog in the next state or whatever don't have a clue what they're producing. They just keep the most pretty marked puppy that has an attitude then they wonder why they're not getting anywhere. Well they don't have any idea where those dogs came from to begin with. They have no foresight. Health and welfareChris: “The health of the breed is everything if you want it to continue. We're not preservation breeders if we say it doesn't matter about the teeth (for example), they're not mentioned in our standard. Well maybe it does matter. And so I think, just by seeing what is available in the rest of the world and how other breeders approach your breed and what they got to show for that is the best education in the world. And to just sit at home and say this is how we've always done it. It's not good enough.” All in the familyAmanda: “I loved Wendy's discussion about building a breeding program and having the ability to try different things and having maybe a critical mass of dogs. One of the things I think a lot of people in today's breeding world struggle with is not having the ability to have that many dogs. For whatever reasons they live in the suburbs or they just can't keep that many dogs or whatever. Chris gave me some really helpful advice and she talked about working with other breeders in a family. Chris: “What we really, really are passionate about is, if we can't sell you a dog and we love this person because they have the same passion and the same commitment to the same type of dog that we have … these are people that dedicated their lives to breeding better dogs … we say we can't sell you a dog but we can lease you a dog. So our males have way more miles on them than I do. “All we can give as our gift is our dogs. (We) will share them … with like-minded people and the reason is selfish. Because those people will use that dog and those puppies will have puppies. (I)n the third generation we will see something we love. We then ask them to do the same thing for us and we borrow that dog back and we incorporate … into our breeding program and they just click.” Developing a planAmanda: “It's about having access to a larger gene pool and it's about having access to a larger number of dogs. I think for newer breeders (it’s) about developing an eye. You know if you are in a breed where there's lower numbers, or whatever the case may be, developing your eye can sometimes be a difficult thing. You just see the ones that are yours and maybe go (to) the national once a year, look at pictures on Facebook. But that's not the same thing as looking at puppies and evaluating and sharing information about what worked and what didn't work and the trial and error pieces of it that Wendy talked about. When you have great friends, you can share in their journey as well as in yours. And learn as much from what they've done and what's worked for them. Chris: “You can't drive to Halifax unless you have a map if you've not been there before. It's no different in breeding dogs. All you need is a plan. If... Support this podcast
Planning Your "Family" of Dogs: Style and HealthOur topic is breeding. With an emphasis on planning your family of dogs. The question: is consistency of style more important than consistency of health and/or quality? How do you get to your desired goals? Today's guests are Amanda Kelly, Wendy Paquette and Chris Heartz. Wendy: "Coming from a background of Shih tzu, that were only recognized in United States in 1969, I didn't have much choice when I first started my breeding program. Living in northern Ontario, the only way I could buy a female was to import two from England 'cause they were just not available. Luckily I came across https://puredogtalk.com/podcast/28-luc-boileau-westminster-winner-master-breeder-and-akc-judge-2/ (Luc Boileau) in Montreal who was showing English imported dogs at the time. So I was able to take my English import and breed it to one of Luc's dogs. But that left me sort of in a quandary because I had nowhere else to go after that. So I basically started out breeding type to type. "Consistency of type was a goal, but health and welfare, to me, is a major factor. If you don't have health and welfare you don't have quality and type either." Support this podcast

Protecting Diversity and Sharing Quality in Rare BreedsHost Laura Reeves is joined by two of North America’s most successful breeders of rare and threatened breeds, Amanda Kelly, Fwaggle Toy Manchester Terriers and Dawne Deeley, TsarShadow Karelian Bear Dogs. These two talented women share their insights, perspectives and guiding principles in preserving their breeds and moving forward into the future. Diversity not division[caption id="attachment_8008" align="alignleft" width="199"] Amanda Kelly[/caption] “One of the things I personally really hold as a strong belief when it comes to breeding is that diversity of opinion and action within our breeds is what really protects the diversity in our breed,” Kelly said. “So, all of that to say that the fact that I'm doing what I think is right and you're doing what you think is right is what's important. It doesn't matter if those are the same things. In fact, it's probably more important that we’re all doing different things. Being able to accept that there's a thousand ways to skin a cat, for lack of a better example, is a really important thing when you're working in a rare breed. You have to appreciate the fact that there is more than one road that can be traveled. “One of the advantages of having been around for a really long time is that you know who everyone is and you know who likes who and who doesn't like who and … where all the skeletons are in everybody's closet. One of the things that I have found most interesting is looking back over two or three or more decades, that you're always going to have popular lines. You're going to have popular sires. And there's going to be dogs that come in and out of fashion from different lines. But when push comes to shove and you've bred yourself into a corner or there's just a lack of diversity because everyone has used the same dog, the places that you end up going are often places that were created out of a rift… you know a big hatred -- breeder X hates breeder Y and so breeder X would never have anything of breeder Y’s in her line etc etc … and not that I would ever encourage it because I think getting along is also really important, but when you look 20 years down the road and everyone who has breeder Y’s dogs are now going to breeder X with their line because that's where the diversity is….” Why Such Low Numbers?[caption id="attachment_8009" align="alignleft" width="300"] Dawne Deeley and ‘Eenokki’ dog, multi International Ch/World Winner/Nordic Winner/Finnish Winner/MBIS Can.Ch. TsarShadow’s The Berserker[/caption] “Historically (Karelians) are a very tough, single-purpose breed,” Deeley said. “In the Nordic countries up until I would say 2015, the Bear Dog was always in like the top 10 or at the very top 20 because we're talking countries with an entirely different societal MO to North America. I mean I like to joke that every Finn is born with a cell phone in one hand and a rifle in the other. And every Finn hunts. I’m not exaggerating. Everybody. The women hunt birds. The guys hunt. Every Finn I know shoots something and it’s to put meat on the table. It's their way of life. It's what they do. The Swedes aren't much different. Neither are the Norwegians. So this is a breed that was developed with a very specific purpose and it was to hunt big game. You had Finnish Spitz and finish hounds for hares and for birds. You had Bear Dogs for moose and bear. And that's all they did. So now … progress marches on and now we've got dogs that are expected to do more things. We have governments that are saying ‘no, no, you know hunting is bad. You're a horrible person if you hunt … especially in North America we have that way of thinking where ‘oh my god how could you actually shoot an animal.’ Finding the right homes“My mom always said, ‘Choose the quality of the home over the quality of the opportunity,’” Kelly said, adding that her family’s breeding program always emphasized keeping prices fair and accessible for families.... Mark Dixon and Dana Paliliunas join me for Session 40 to discuss the new curriculum they just published, which is called Accept, Identify, and Move. In short, it's a curriculum guide to help kiddos by combining Mindfulness, Acceptance and Commitment Therapy, and Applied Behavior Analysis. In this episode, we touch on a wide range of topics, including classroom interventions, school wide supports, the role of Mark's previous works (e.g., PEAK and ACT for Children with Autism and Emotional Challenges), and even disseminating and teaching complex topics to school personnel. So even if you don't work in school settings, or if you are an ACT-skeptic, I think there are plenty of lessons that are contained in this episode. I've had a chance to review excerpts of the book and in short, it looks fantastic. Personally, I can see many applications of this work in my practice as a school-based consultant. It's available right now at the Shawnee Scientific Press website. We also get into tons of listener questions on Mark's PEAK curriculum. In fact, we could probably do an entire Q & A show on PEAK given its popularity. In that segment of the show, we discuss the PEAK ABA YouTube channel and the PEAK ABA Solutions training arm. You can find links to these resources here and here. This episode is supported by Chartlytics. Do you want to hear a cool story about using Behavior Analysis to improve the environment? Glad you asked! Dr. Amanda Kelly returns to the podcast to discuss her #nostrawforme campaign. What started out as essentially a self-management intervention is evolving into movement to reduce the usage of disposable or single-use items. Personally, I rarely use straws, but this conversation prompted me to think about other ways in which I consume single-use items, such as paper towels, aluminum cans, and so forth. I hope you find this conversation just as thought provoking. And feel free to share these thoughts in the comments! Here are some links to things Amanda talked about: The Lonely Whale Foundation ABAI's Behavior Analysis for Sustainable Societies SIG A paper from Dr. Scott Geller's early seat belt work The Behavior Analyst's special edition on sustainability Research Gate If you enjoy this episode, please take a minute to head over to iTunes and leave a rating and review. In-person referrals to like minded behavior-folks are always appreciated as well! This podcast is sponsored by Britton Behavioral Consulting. Dr. Lisa Britton, BCBA-D specializes in providing independent fieldwork supervision in a remote context. If you listen to Session 29, you'll learn that she has a wealth of experience in both the practice of Behavior Analysis, as well some great processes in place for mentoring soon-to-be BCBA's. I have corresponded with previous mentees of hers, and to a person, they sang her praises as a supervisor. Also, if you need BACB Type 2 continuing education, why not earn them while you're on the go? How does this work? Again, glad you asked. Click here to find out more.
