Hosted by Dr. Sarah Hensley, Specialized Social Psychologist, Attachment Theory Expert, and Founder & CEO of The Dating Decoder with Co-host Raina Butcher, Owner/CEO of Joyful Consulting Welcome to "The Love Doc Podcast" where Host Dr. Sarah Hensley and her co-host Raina Butcher dive deep into the intricacies of love, attraction, attachment, relationships, and self-awareness. Dr. Hensley brings a wealth of knowledge and experience to help listeners navigate the complexities of modern romance. In each episode, Dr. Hensley tackles burning questions about love, relationships, and the mind's complexities, drawing from her psychological research, real-life experiences, and her own individual expertise, to provide insightful perspectives and practical advice. In this insightful episode of "How Do You Want to Be Loved," we delve into the profound ways people seek and experience love based on their attachment styles. Drawing from our personal journeys in marriage and past relationships, we reflect on how each relationship has been a stepping stone in understanding our own needs and desires, ultimately leading us to our wonderful husbands. Dr. Hensley, expands the conversation by emphasizing that truly loving your partner goes beyond the five love languages. She explains that these languages are just the beginning, a surface-level understanding. To genuinely connect, one must delve deeper. For example, a Fearful Avoidant might cherish gifts, but not just any gift—they desire something unique that mirrors their individuality, showing that you truly see and understand them. Dr. Hensley highlights the importance of studying your partner, gathering insights, and learning to avoid their triggers. This attentive approach, focused on meeting your partner's specific needs, is essential for a thriving relationship. She underscores the necessity of earning attachment security, which involves a radical self-discovery journey and a mindset shift from "how do I get them to" to "what is it about me that accepts this circumstance." Further, Dr. Hensley discusses the power of "speaking life" into your relationship. This means actively communicating with your partner about how they wish to be loved, what feels good to them, and how you can love them better. Co-host Raina Butcher wraps up the episode by affirming Dr. Hensley's insights and sharing the tangible results her clients have achieved through her guidance. Dr. Hensley's expertise in teaching people how to love one another authentically is not just theoretical; it's transformative. Join us for this episode to explore how understanding and nurturing attachment styles can lead to deeper, more meaningful connections in your relationships. The Exclusive Career Coach
300: 300 Episodes - Academy Awards for My Best Advice

The Exclusive Career Coach

Play Episode Listen Later Dec 6, 2023 25:55

I can't believe this is episode #300! My first podcast was published on October 25th, 2017. Shortly after that, I put out four additional episodes utilizing some material I had already created. I had no idea where I was going to go with the podcast after those initial episodes – I only knew that I really, really wanted to podcast and believed it was the best way for me to get my brilliance out into the world.  There has been an evolution of The Exclusive Career Coach, to be sure…As the focus of my practice evolved, so did the audience I spoke to via the podcast. Earlier episodes were heavy on content for recent college graduates; there were also episodes for wanna-be entrepreneurs. I went from no guests to having about 25% of my episodes be with guests, before settling on about 10% guest episodes.  I used to “bracket” episodes with themes…spending three or four weeks in a row breaking down a larger topic like interviewing or career decision-making.  I will admit that finding new content for the podcast has become increasingly difficult. ChatGPT has been extremely helpful in guiding me towards the topics people are searching the internet for. I also rely heavily on the “zeitgeist” – what my clients are asking me about and what I'm seeing talked about on social media and in online groups I am a member of.  Now for the meat of episode #300 – My Best Career Advice. I'm going to reference specific episodes and have included the links to those episodes in the show notes. I've awarded winners in each of the categories of podcasts I release, Academy Award style.  Winner of My Best Advice for Career Decision-Making: #119 – Are You Squarely in the Center of Your Passion? This episode resonates deeply with me, as I talk about how so many people leave who they really are at home when they go to work. As a result, work is unfulfilling and mind-dulling. https://www.exclusivecareercoaching.com/posts/2020-03-18-119-are-you-squarely-in-the-center-of-your-passion I give three case studies of people I have worked with who were squarely in the center of their passion, and why.  Two books I recommend in this episode are Tim Kelley's “True Purpose” and Po Bronson's “What Should I Do with My Life?” Great episode for those of you who are questioning whether you have lost your way, career-wise…or just want reassurance that you haven't.  Winner of Best Advice for Managing Your Career: #219 - Ten Symptoms of Job Burnout – and What to Do About Them http://exclusivecareercoaching.com/posts/2022-03-25-219-ten-symptoms-of-job-burnout-and-what-to-do-about-them This episode was published on March 23rd, 2022 as the world emerged from Covid. Although this episode wasn't specifically about Covid-related burnout – I brought on guests to talk about that topic – it was about how to specifically recognize that what you are experiencing at work is burnout.  For each of the Ten Symptoms, I provide a question to ask yourself and what to do about that symptom. Hint: While some of the Ten Symptoms suggest that you may need to look elsewhere, only two of the Symptoms outright require moving on.  Great episode for those of you who aren't feeling it at work, but don't know why. Or you suspect what the problem is, but don't know what to do about it.   Winner of Best Advice for Making a Career Transition:I actually have three episodes for this category – all related to career pivots and career reinventions. #121 – Career Pivots and Reinventionhttps://www.exclusivecareercoaching.com/posts/2020-04-01-121-career-pivots-and-reinvention #133 – Is Now the Perfect Time to Reinvent Your Career? https://www.exclusivecareercoaching.com/posts/2020-06-24-133-is-now-the-perfect-time-to-reinvent-your-career #280 – What You MUST Do in Your Job Search if You Are Pivoting Careershttp://exclusivecareercoaching.com/posts/2023-07-19-280-what-you-must-do-in-your-job-search-if-you-are-pivoting-careers In these episodes, I define career pivots and career reinventions, give strategies for successfully navigating a career pivot or career reinvention, talk about the pros and cons of a career reinvention, and give strategies for job searching when you have decided to pivot or reinvent your career.  Great episodes for those of you who are considering a career pivot or career reinvention – or those of you who are dissatisfied with your current career path and want to explore alternatives.   Winner of Best Advice for Dress & Etiquette:I haven't done many episodes in this category, and some of them are with guests, which I'm leaving for a separate category.  #291 – What Should I Wear to a Job Interview? http://exclusivecareercoaching.com/posts/2023-10-04-291-what-should-i-wear-to-a-job-interview In this episode, I address the questions I'm getting about how to dress for job interviews in a post-Covid world. I cover WHY dress still matters, how to determine what is appropriate dress for the company culture, and the levels of business casual.  Great episode for those of you with a job interview coming up, whether in person or via technology.   Winner of Best Advice for Job Interviews:Consistently, the episodes I publish about interviewing are among the most downloaded – clearly people are roaming podcasts to get ready for a job interview.  I began with episodes covering more general aspects of the job interview; since then, I've gotten more granular with the scope of what I cover.  I've selected three winners, all covering the behavioral interview: #277 - Behavioral Interview Questions Don't Come Out of Thin Air – How to Know What You're Going to Be Asked http://exclusivecareercoaching.com/posts/2023-06-14-277-behavioral-interview-questions-dont-come-out-of-thin-air-how-to-know-what-youre-going-to-be-asked #262 – The Behavioral Interview: Your Five-Step Process for Delivering Job-Winning Answershttp://exclusivecareercoaching.com/posts/2023-02-22-262-the-behavioral-interview-your-5-step-process-for-delivering-job-winning-answers #150 - Putting a Bow on Your Behavioral Interview Answers http://exclusivecareercoaching.com/posts/2023-02-22-262-the-behavioral-interview-your-5-step-process-for-delivering-job-winning-answers I cover what a behavioral interview question is, how to prepare for these types of questions, and how to wrap up your answers with one of two approaches that garner you what I like to think of as “bonus points.”  Great for those of you who have job interviews coming up!   Winner of Best Advice for Job Search:This is a HUGE category! I could have gone in a lot of different directions with the winner, but I chose a foundational concept that benefits EVERYONE looking for a new job.  #258 - How to Organize Your Job Search Time to Optimize Your Results http://exclusivecareercoaching.com/posts/2023-01-25-258-how-to-organize-your-job-search-time-to-optimize-your-results I provide five strategies for structuring your job search time to yield the best possible results.  Great for those of you who find your job search time gets hijacked by other things – and those of you who find your job search time isn't being used wisely.   Winner of Best Advice for Life Coaching:To be clear, I am a Certified Executive & Leadership Development Coach, not a life coach. However, life coaching is an unregulated industry, and I am a student of life coaching.  It's incredibly important for me to talk about your mindset when we talk about most of these other topics, but your thoughts WILL generate the results you get.  These five episodes each cover an aspect of the thought model taught by one of my early coaches, Brooke Castillo. In a nutshell: A Circumstance is a situation in your life that can be proven in a court of lawYou then have a Thought – positive, negative, or neutral – about that CircumstanceThat Thought generates a Feeling for youThat Feeling generates an Action, Inaction, or Reaction, whichLeads to your Result #38 - The Neutrality of Circumstanceshttps://www.exclusivecareercoaching.com/posts/2018-12-19-038-the-neutrality-of-circumstances #39 - Your Thoughts Determine EVERYTHINGhttps://www.exclusivecareercoaching.com/posts/2018-12-19-039-your-thoughts-determine-everything #40 - How Do You Want to Feel?https://www.exclusivecareercoaching.com/posts/2018-12-19-040-how-do-you-want-to-feel/ #41 – Taking the Proper Action Stepshttps://www.exclusivecareercoaching.com/posts/2018-12-19-041-taking-the-proper-action-steps #42 - You ARE Getting Results…Are They the Results You Want? https://www.exclusivecareercoaching.com/posts/2018-12-19-042-you-are-getting-results-they-the-results-you-want/ Great for those of you who want an easy-to-understand framework for looking at the results you are getting in your life…and why.   Winner of Best Advice for Leadership:Several of the episodes about Leadership include guests, but here's a great foundational one with 10 points you must know to be a successful leader.  One I think is often overlooked is #7 – ask for advice on your leadership. Many new leaders – and seasoned ones as well – are either afraid to ask or don't think they need to. Be open to feedback from your direct reports and you'll become an even better leader. #223 – Leadership 101: What You MUST Know to Be a Successful Leaderhttp://exclusivecareercoaching.com/posts/2022-04-20-223-leadership-101-what-you-must-know-to-be-a-successful-leader Great for those of you entering into your first leadership role, or those of you who could benefit from a refresher.   Winner of Best Advice for LinkedIn: This is another huge category. Because technology is involved, some of my earlier podcasts on LinkedIn contact outdated information.  I chose this episode because this is a concept I teach a lot of my clients – how to leverage the people their connections are connected to.  #244 – Mining Your Connections' Connections on LinkedInhttp://exclusivecareercoaching.com/posts/2022-09-28-244-mining-your-connections-connections-on-linkedin Great way to expand your LinkedIn network strategically and easily.   Winner of Best Advice for Networking: Of all the networking-related episodes I've put out, I've gotten the most feedback on this one. I think that's because Introverts resonated with the topic – and many Extraverts did, too.  One of my goals in my practice is to help my clients become successful networkers – getting past their fears, learning how to network effectively, and how to give as much value as they get in the networking process.  #295: Help! I'm an Introvert and I Hate Networkinghttp://exclusivecareercoaching.com/posts/2023-11-01-295-help-im-an-introvert-and-i-hate-networking Great for everyone who is less than excited about networking.   Winner of Best Advice for Professional Development:I did this episode in the later days of Covid, when so many were working remotely and others had gone back into the office. I was getting a lot of questions about how to make sure your work was noticed when you didn't have direct face time with your boss. #221 – How to Get Noticed and Promoted While Working Remotely http://exclusivecareercoaching.com/posts/2022-04-06-221-how-to-get-noticed-promoted-while-working-remotely Great for those of you who still work remotely, and those of you who supervise remote workers.   Winner of Best Advice for Resume Writing:It may surprise you that, as one of fewer than 25 Master Resume Writers in the world, I don't love talking about resume writing.  I love WRITING resumes. Having said that, I have put out great content covering all aspects of the resume. The episode I chose goes into some detail on how to customize your resume for each position you apply for. Everyone tells you you SHOULD do that – but I wanted to tell you exactly HOW.  #287 – How to Tailor Your Resume and Other Materials For a Specific Positionhttp://exclusivecareercoaching.com/posts/2023-09-06-287-how-to-tailor-your-resume-and-other-materials-for-a-specific-position Great for those of you in a job search.   Winner of Best Advice for Salary Negotiations:I've only done a handful of episodes on this topic; the episode I chose provides you some foundational teaching I do with my clients who want coaching on salary negotiations.  #149 – Salary Negotiations: 3 Important Numbershttps://www.exclusivecareercoaching.com/posts/2020-10-14-149-salary-negotiations-3-important-numbers/ Great for those of you who are in a job search.   Winner of Best Advice for Work Issues:This category covers a lot of ground and it was difficult to pick a favorite. Think of this as a Venn diagram: I want a guest who overlaps the areas of expertise I have (in other words, not someone talking about something completely off-target for my audience), BUT who doesn't completely overlap my area of expertise (I've already got those areas covered, thank you very much).  I want to give out two awards here; the first is for the episode I most frequently direct people to listen to: #154 – Five Ways Mind Drama Can Creep Into Your Job Searchhttps://www.exclusivecareercoaching.com/posts/2020-11-18-154-5-ways-mind-drama-can-creep-into-your-job-search-with-jane-springer Jane Springer was my guest on the episode – BTW, she earns a side award for being my most frequent guest. Mind drama is a HUGE issue in the job search…and completely avoidable. “As human beings, we are not meant to be alone. We are meant to share experiences to help each other with our pains and our celebrations. It's our group experience that allows us to deepen our own personal experiences.” - Anne Cox You're about to listen to something extraordinary! Instead of the usual interview style, I've collected wisdom from a group of experts to focus a discussion around community and connection…which is something that so many of us desire more of (and can benefit greatly from) in our lives. The pandemic has created a sense of loneliness, divide and separation. In trying to figure out these uncomfortable feelings for myself, I came to the insight that the opposite of separation is COMMUNITY! “To live in hearts we leave behind is not to die.” Thomas Campbell 19th century Scottish poet How Do You Want to be Remembered? This past week was the 20th anniversary of the September 11th terrorist attacks. And when we talk about September 11th, the thing we always say is how important it is to remember. How we should never forget. I certainly haven't forgotten. I've shared a lot of memories with my kids - who weren't alive at the time - to help them understand what happened.  And this week I've been wondering - WHY is it so important to remember? What exactly is the purpose of remembering? How much remembering is the right amount? And is there a right way to remember? The word legacy first appeared in English in the late 14th century and referred mostly to an 'ambassador' who would distribute property as laid out in a will. Over time the meaning shifted to refer to the 'property left in a will'.  The meaning of legacy evolved again over the next few centuries to include the memories of a person. Thomas Campbell the 19th century Scottish Poet, said: “To live in hearts we leave behind is not to die.” The idea that we can live on through the memories of our loved ones is actually relatively new. It's a beautiful idea at the heart of Mexican holiday, Dia de los Muertos and you can see it in many other cultures too. The Pressure of Remembering But if I'm really honest - remembering - and being remembered - feels like a lot of pressure. It's pressure that I'm mostly putting on myself - to do memorable things - but also on my family...to document and remember me appropriately. There aren't any clear procedural guidelines. One part is just having conversations so the information passes from one brain to the next. To preserve it orally. But is talking about it enough? You can write it down. There are services to do that if you aren't inclined to become an author. Pictures are great. Though pictures that lack context can depreciate into garbage for future generations who don't know the stories that go with them. Audio storytelling has a lot of potential and video might be the best way to fully capture the person as they were. But what's the difference between content and legacy? What are we optimizing for? How much remembering is enough remembering? Rebecca Solnit On Legacy Rebecca Solnit is an award-winning author. She's written non-fiction books that required years of research and writing and editing. But the most popular thing she ever published is an essay called “Men Explain Things To Me” and it only took her a couple of hours to write. She wrote it effortlessly because it was based on a lifetime of experience and it spoke truth about how women are casually marginalized. Women recognized the truth immediately and it was a big influence on the #MeToo movement. In her memoir she talks about legacy and why being remembered isn't what actually matters. I want you to hear the whole passage because it totally changed how I think about my own legacy. That's what this episode is about. It's a celebration of Solnit's ability to characterize legacy as something restorative and sustainable. Episode Credits Laura - my wife - read the passage from Rebecca Solnit's memoir. How do you find your voice of influence?  Does speaking up, declaring your opinion, sharing your ideas, or stating your needs cause someone else's voice to dim down? I've often struggled with this exact question. I consider myself an empathic person. I'm sensitive to the needs of others and mindful of how my actions affect them.  As a result, I'm acutely aware of when I take up space in a room.  Often, I wondered am I making it all about me, is it self-fish, am I being self centric or narcissistic. One thing I've learned is if you're the type of person that is asking these kinds of questions –you need to trust yourself, that you are not that person you worry about being.  And more importantly, you're probably holding back more than we want you to because you're so conscientious of yourself and of others. We want to hear you. We want your voice at the table. We want you to take up space. My guest today, Andrea Wenburg is the CEO and founder of the consulting firm, Voice of Influence® and uses her fearless approach to draw out the best in leaders and teams, by helping them develop motivating influence with customers and key stakeholders. In this episode with Andrea we go deep on how you can use your Voice of Influence to sell from love.  We talk about what is really underneath the surface and why we hold back and don't share our voice.  Even though 2020 has been filled with its challenges, I love what Andrea had to say. She wasn't going to be afraid of not getting clients, not having enough sales or revenues, hold her back to settling for whatever she could get.  Instead she stopped the scramble and stood firmly in her voice and value.  She knew her solutions where what her clients needed and asked for what she deserved.  And it worked! I can't wait for you to listen to this episode and get inspired to share your Voice of Influence as Andrea shows us her way. This post EP 5: When Do We Speak Up? RYB 839: Using Facebook Ads To Grow Your Amazon Sales Without Losing Your Shirt with Chris Schaffer

The Amazing Seller Podcast

Today my good friend Chris Shaffer and I are talking about how to drive traffic to your Amazon products using Facebook Ads, and we’ll give our honest opinion about when it can be valuable and when it might not be beneficial. Let’s dive right in.   Are Facebook Ads Worth It? This conversation will be focused on talking about making Facebook ads to sell products within the Amazon eco-system.   Note: Don’t utilize Facebook ads until you’ve made sure to maximize the resources that Amazon has already provided to you. You’ll end up getting more bang for your buck by taking advantage of using Amazon advertising.   When people are on Amazon, they’re on the search to buy something. So when you spend your advertising dollars there, you have more of a chance to make a sale. Whereas people on Facebook aren’t necessarily looking to buy something and it might be difficult to convince them to buy your product from an ad if they’re not actively looking to buy a similar product.   There may be times that you can’t make the pay per click platform on Amazon work for you or if you’re at the “point of no return” and have spent all you can advertising on Amazon and it’s no longer leading to sales it might be a good time to look at how you can get external traffic.   Keep in mind that Amazon doesn’t necessarily prefer external traffic. It actually converts at a much lower rate if you’re not already optimized within Amazon, and it will negatively affect how you rank organically if you’re conversion is really low from external traffic.   Use Facebook Ads As a Secondary Marketing Tool However, there is something to be said about being on the same playing field as your competition. If everyone is selling on Amazon and using the same strategy and set of resources and tools, it might be hard to stand out. When you add the external side and learn how to incorporate it and make it work, you might just be able to get a leg up from your competition and leverage your rankings.   The key is that it’s an addictive piece of marketing. You need to make sure that you have a solid foundation first. The most qualified traffic does exist on Amazon, so exhaust all your efforts there first before paying for additional traffic. You can also use your email list or other free sources, but just don’t pay for any more traffic until you’ve all you can internally first.       Two Ways to Drive Traffic From Facebook to Amazon There are two main ways that you can bring people to your Amazon product by using Facebook Ads. Although we strongly recommend the second option we’ll cover both. Sending Ad Traffic Directly to Your Amazon Ad   This is usually not a recommended method for three mani reasons.   Driving people who are looking at say cat videos to go and buy cat liter can be a tough sell since they weren’t planning to make a similar purchase. This creates a low conversation rate.   You’ll never have a chance to talk to any of the people you advertise to again or if they end up going to Amazon and abandon their carts before they make a purchase you have no way of getting in front of them again unless they happen to see your ad for a second time.   It’s hard to track what traffic and sales you’re getting from Facebook and where they are coming from. We can look at it from a correlation point of view, but it’ll be hard to see the cost of each sale. If you create a storefront on Amazon, you can create custom URLs and can track how many people purchase your product from the Facebook link. This makes it easier to track conversation rates. Create Your Own Landing Page   ConvertKiit has a great landing page feature, and Giveaway Boost works great too. You can run Facebook Ad for your product and can visitors to a custom landing page. This way, you’ll be able to collect their email address and now have a targetable audience you can reach out to in the future. The goal is to make it as easy as possible for people to do the task that you want them to complete.   By creating a landing page, you’re able to take advantage of all the cool features inside Facebook ads like conversion optimization, which is the secret sauce behind the most successful Facebook ad campaigns. You’ll choose the targeted audience that you’re looking for. You can’t do that if you drive traffic directly to Amazon. You can also go back later and see what other types of products people who bought your product be interested in. Does It Make Sense to Use Facebook Ads For a Single Product   If you only have one product to sell it might not be worth doing Facebook ads. You’ll lose money If you only have one product to sell, it might not be worth doing Facebook ads. You’ll lose money or break even to get data, and it’s a lot of planning to get it to where your product is profitable. Paid traffic makes it hard if you’re just selling one product.   If you have a reorder product, it makes more sense to advertise on Facebook or if you have multiple products. You can always send out emails or create ads that feature your additional products for those who have already purchased it with you before. If you lose money on a reorder product during the first sale, chances are you’ll make more when that person purchases again because you’re not paying to get their business the second time around.   Note: Always maximize your advertising efforts on Amazon before creating Facebook Ads for your products.   You also need to have a good grasp on Amazon pay per click before you move on to Facebook ads. If, for some reason, that isn’t going to work or it’s not doable in your category, then go to Facebook ads. It’s an easier conversion because people are already there looking for things to buy, and there are fewer moving parts you need to worry about. Learn the Game to Drive More Sales   First and foremost, you have to figure out how to market your products on Amazon if you want to make sales. This is the most important part of your business.   We always talk about building an email list and creating content because if you can get good at that part of the process, you’ll be in a good position. Your product needs traffic for you to sell. You can drive traffic fast with Facebook ads, but that doesn’t mean that you’ll convert that traffic.   You may not make money on your first sale, but if you create content, you’ll be able to make a profit much quicker. Always look at the big picture and analyze what other products or services your customers need and how you can create additional offerings to help them out.   The goal is to drive people to a piece of content or product that you can control. Giveaway Boost is a great plugin and gives you the formula to make this successful. You can create a page with an offer that you can control. It’s easy for people to signup and get a coupon code once they have. The best part is you can target those people later and create an email list and communicate. What to Ask Before Creating Your Facebook Ad There are a few things you should take into consideration before moving forward with creating your Facebook Ads. Let’s review those now. How Do You Want to Run the Ads The most successful approach is to create your own landing page. You’ll also need to establish who your target audience is and decide what offer you’ll give when they come to your landing page. You need to have this all figured out before you can set up your ad and get it ready to go.   You could also consider leading the Facebook ad with an informational freebie like a checklist, download, or guide related to your product niche. On your thank you page, you could have a discount for your product. This way, you’re giving something valuable before asking them to buy something. It's an effective marketing tool.   Who Do You Want to See Your Ads If you want to target existing customers, you can download your customer list from Amazon. If you go this route giving a coupon can be effective since they’ve already purchased from you. If you’re not using existing customers and go into broad targeting, it makes more sense to use a giveaway or to provide something an informational freebie and then make the sale on the backend once you’ve cultivated and built the relationship. Always test it to see which works best for your market and brand before making a final decision of what works best in the long run,   If you don’t have a business with multiple revenue streams, it’ll be harder to make ads work. You can also offer promotions if they buy more of your product to bring in additional sales. Or start to make content related to your product niche.   Amazon Is the Unicorn of Online Sales Platforms Amazon has made it so easy to put your product on there and start to make money, but it’s not always that easy, especially with Facebook Ads. They do give you lots of features, but it’s not easy to turn it into revenue. Generally, you need to plan for the worst and work towards the best when you’re advertising your new product.   You need to work on creating a real business for Facebook Ads to work. You don’t have to create content to create an email list, but we highly recommend it. You need to build your business and not just sell a product to make it a channel that works best for your business. When you have additional people, you can reach out to it’s beneficial and will make it much easier to scale in the long run.     You can drive as much traffic to amazon as you want, but how do you scale that in a profitable way? Have a bunch of other products or provide visitors wit ha place where they are paying you back with ads or affiliate links that you have on your site.   Use the Brand Creators PlayBook to Get Started If you want to build out a site that has useful content and drives traffic over time, check out our playbook that helps you identify your market on the traffic side and how monetization your business in ways you may not have considered before. The Problem With Over-NegotiatingWhen I was first starting out in this business I learned an important lesson about dealmaking from my friend and mentor, Russell. I was working on a big deal in which we were going to make about $1.3M and I realized there was more demand for the deal than I had originally thought. Great! We could make $2.2M instead. I was so excited. But then Russell told me something I'll never forget. “Don't be a pig,” he said. “This is a fair deal and these are fair terms. Sell it out and let's move on to the next one.” I learned a lot from that, and it's still a part of my approach today. In My Deals, Everybody WinsPushing people too hard is a mistake. Yes, you may make a few more dollars in the short term, but you'll quickly develop a reputation for being hard to work with. Once word gets out in your industry that you aren't a team player, it's almost impossible to live it down. Especially today with customer reviews and social media. The solution is to adopt an attitude that everybody needs to be a winner at the end of every deal you do. Yes, you want to make money. But you also want the other parties in the deal to make a reasonable margin and be able to stay in business. I discuss how to do this without getting taken advantage of on today's episode of the podcast. How Do You Want to Spend Your Time? Here's the other reason not to negotiate too hard: how much of your time do you really want to spend grinding other people down for a higher margins? I was at a car dealership recently and I used a rather strange negotiation tactic. The salesperson told me the price and I said, “I'll take it.” I didn't negotiate at all. I paid the money, drove it off the lot, and spent the rest of the weekend with my family.Be a person whose time is too precious to spend fighting over a few dollars. That's a type of prize framing that I use all the time. I don't want to pay outrageous prices for things, but if the price is fair I'm not going to waste my time trying to get a slightly better deal.Negotiate until you reach a fair price, shake hands, and move on.Story Pitch vs Data PitchThe final topic in this episode is the difference between a story pitch and a data pitch. I see people get this confused all the time. There are two main ways to pitch any deal and if you choose the wrong one you'll never be able to convince others to invest in you. You also don't want to mix these together.I'll show you exactly what the difference is and you'll see an example of how to construct each type of pitch. Finally, I'll point out some common mistakes and how to avoid them.

Episode 7: How Do YOU Want to Live? with Dave Dettmann (and how he helped me find 50K) Today's guest is my very own financial advisor! Let me tell you a little story first. Today's guest is my very own financial adviser! Let me tell you a little story first. Mike and I thought we knew it all when it came to investing...we thought we didn't need an expert helping us and even more so than that, our situation was so dire we were embarrassed to ask for help. Our experience with previous advisers had never been personalized in a way that felt aligned with who we are and what we want out of life and mostly many of them told us advice we already knew (even though we weren't doing it). Our ego stopped us from moving forward. So we did nothing for YEARS. Until Dave. Dave didn't try to win me over with his impressive knowledge or go over my finances in the first meeting, show me portfolios, bios or marketing material. He first and foremost wanted to know what excited us and what our dreams were and what we wanted out of life. Instead of telling me how much money I would need to live on in 30 years he asked me what I love to do and what experiences are important to me. It totally helped me to re-look at how I view investing. In this episode Dave talks about how couples can work together to improve their finances and how to know when it time to ask for help. He also gives practical tips about looking at the type of life you want to live and how to align your finances with those desires. He is cheerful and funny and a total regular guy who at his core wants for his clients exactly what he wants for himself.... a life of impact. Dave is a financial adviser with the Northwestern Mutual Wealth Management company. He has received many honors and recognition within the field of financial planning/advising since he started in 2011. Beyond the industry, and more importantly, Dave is a Christ follower a loving husband to his wife Rachel and dedicated father to his two daughters Adalie (7) and Eliza (4). When he is not guiding clients towards financial security or spending time with his family he spends his time wood working, mountain biking and staying healthy through Crossfit (yes he is one of those Crossfitters). He believes that living a life by design is better than one by default. This shines through in this episode. Dave didn't always work in finance. He was a teacher prior to this and owned a successful photography business. He tells in this episode what made him change careers. His story is such a great example of how changing your net worth sometimes means changing careers and always includes changing your mindset. I can't wait for you to hear all about it. Starting a Family and Planning for Retirement? I Got This

Many say the American dream is dead. That getting married, starting a family and building for the future is no longer possible. Unfortunately, many others believe it when they hear it. All the while though, there are people with "normal" jobs building the American Dream step by step. One such person (or couple) is Molly and her husband. He works as a teacher. She works part time. They have a home and young daughter but still safe 15% of their gross income. From our conversation, they don't seem to do anything magical. They simply work at being intentional with how they spend money. Lessons I Learned From Molly's Story The word retirement is changing. It's becoming more about working on your own terms than leaving the workforce. This is significant, and if you share this vision you can use it to plan more intelligently of your future. It's important to be careful about what you spend on your education. According to Career Builder, over half of college grads are in jobs that don't require a degree. Education is important, but it may lead you to work you hadn't considered. It is possible to start a family, build a life and save for the future in "normal" paying careers. It takes being very intentional about your spending and working together. It's important to learn about the time value of money and investing early. Although parents and schools, generally, do poorly at this, there are lots of great resources for those that want to learn. In fact, today I had a perfect example. A 19 year old called me to discuss how to start saving for the future. This young man is working, going to school and has extra money he wants to start saving and investing with. Where'd he learn this attitude?  Books and podcasts! It's so easy to buy things that we forget about the great free resources available to us. Whether it's on the internet or at the local library, there are free resources to help you learn about nearly anything. Molly gives a great example of this in her quest to learn Spanish. Rather than buy a expensive (highly marketed) language program, she found free resources at the local library. Molly Early 33’s Married 5 years A toddler daughter (20 months) Registered nurse What Does Retirement Mean to You? “In my 20’s it was this nebulous way in the future concept  that happens to other people, but would never happen to me because I’m never going to grow old." "Retirement to me would be a continuation, where I’m able to work just the amount that I want to. Maybe some of that is paid. Maybe some of that is volunteered. " "I think of retirement as the point that we hit financial independence, so that I’m not just working because I have to. I’m working because I want to." What Are You Most Excited About Retirement? “The flexibility to do whatever I want to do with my time.” "I would love to live close to my children, when they have children.” What Worries You Most Worried About? “Unexpected future expenses (home remodeling, more kids) could push back the date of our financial independence.” “I spend most of my time focusing on what I can control.” How Do You Think You're Doing on Your Journey Towards Retirement? “If you’re looking at the average American in their mid-30’s I think we’e ahead of the curve.” “We’re saving about 15% of our gross income towards retirement.” Do You Use a Financial Planner? “I took a Retirement Planning Today class at a local community college.  They offered a free consultation. It was very sales oriented.” What is the Worst Financial Decision You’ve Ever Made? “I got an undergraduate degree that I’m not using. I got a teaching credential that I’m not using. I even went back to school to start to get a masters in nursing (and then dropped out). So, I’ve spent a lot of money on education that I’m not using.” “I didn’t pay more attention and try to learn about investing in my 20’s.” What Do You Struggle With When Making Financial Decisions? “I would probably say, I’ve gotten borderline obsessed with learning about personal finance.” What is Your Number One Resource? “The Library.” “I am in love with the public library.” How Do You Want to Be Remembered? Well, I think I want to be remembered by what kind of relationships I had with people in my life.” Question:  What is the One Thing You Can Do Today to Be More Intentional With Your Money? For me, it is having better conversations about money with my wife Shauna. Lately, we've gotten a little lazy in our spending. Actually, I've gotten a little lazy with our spending. Not crazy lazy. More like I've become less intentional than I'd like about my spending decisions. Sorta like there's a hole in my pocket that bits of money falls though. I know it's there, I just haven't gotten around to fixing it yet. My wife helps me stay focused and fix these little things. What About You?  Let me know here.
