In 2016, Surrey Nanosystems created a substance known as "The Blackest Black." Immediately, a British artist purchased the exclusive rights to use the "Vantablack" substance in art. The art world was angry and started developing ways to strike back. In this episode, we talk about Vantablack, Anish Kapoor, Stuart Semple and more. Then we chat with Hypnotist, Magician and Entrepreneur, CJ Johnson! Well, we made it to the end of the year (almost!), and we are back at the Art Angle with our monthly Round Up, where we bring together some of our esteemed reporters to talk about the big stories that are swirling in the air. Joining host Ben Davis this week to chat are senior editor Kate Brown and senior market reporter Eileen Kinsella. As always, there is a lot to talk about this month. First up, we'll discuss the the state of the art market as evidenced by the recent art auctions in New York, ahead of the final crash of art fairs of the year taking place in Miami. We'll also talk about the state of politics and culture in Italy, which interestingly enough, now involves a conversation about J.R.R. Tolkien, the beloved author of Lord of the Rings. Finally, we discuss artist Anish Kapoor and his Vantablack, ultra-black artworks, which are on view now at Lisson Gallery in New York.

Share Radio's tech whizz Steve Caplin discusses trying – unsuccessfully – to sell the Non-Fungible Token of the first ever tweet. Anish Kapoor has upset other artists by cornering the market in Vantablack, you'll be able to watch movies in driverless cars, but not use your phone, there's an appealing small hand-held game console – sold out until next year, electric chopsticks to make food taste saltier and a bizarre App-controlled charging cable with a smart display. Scientists developed VANTA Black to absorb over 99% of visible light. The vertically aligned carbon nano tube array will trap the light creating a surreal effect like looking into a black hole. When the substance covers an object, the contours of the form disappear into a flattened silhouette. The artist Anish Kapoor has the exclusive right to use VANTA black for artistic purposes. The artist Stuart Semple doesn't like the notion of someone hoarding materials and so in a delightful bit of poetic justice, Semple has developed products like the pinkiest pink and the world's most glittery glitter which users must agree never to share with Anish Kapoor. In this episode Gary Mansfield speaks to Stuart Semple (@stuartsemple) Stuart Semple is a multidisciplinary British artist working across painting, sculpture, happenings, technology and activism. He is well known for his sociologically engaged works that often discuss youth politics, accessibility and democracy. Although diverse in it's presentation, Semple's body of work orbits around a handful of recurring themes; anxiety, society, cultural history, technology, connection, community and freedom. Ultimately landing with a clear-minded sense of utility, that art itself should have a social function. At his Mum's kitchen table Stuart started to produce high quality acrylic paints under the name CultureHustle.com, creating The Blackest Black and The Pinkest Pink, the sales of which boomed after being inadvertently indorsed by Anish Kapoor. 19th Century civil rights giant, Martin Delany, was a publisher, doctor, educator, Army Major and as radical as they came in the 1800s. We discuss him and his place in the civil rights cannon on this episode. We also define the historical characteristics of black leaders and institutions and demonstrate how BLM is not a black civil rights organization (for those of you still under the delusion it is). While you wait for a black elected official or member of the black elite to stand up against the mob and to speak up for the real concerns of black America tune in here.

Greetings listeners! We are back like we never left; celebrating the end of the best Black History Month ever! Best, as in we didn't DIE die like we predicted last year, and best because lots of dope ass, black ass stuff happened in February, and we wanted to celebrate. From Black Panther taking over the world to the African Union trying to make Wakanda for real, we looked back at the month that was. We also chuckled at Afrikaners wanting asylum from Mango Mussolini after South Africa's president promised to remove white farmers from the land, and the general foolishness of fuckery that amounted to their horrible, no good, very bad month. Glory to the Ancestors; let us pray it continues. All of this and more on this episode of the Brown Liquor Report. #DontStopListenListen #BLR #wakanda #blackpanther #safaree #rickross #maybachmusic #southafrica #africanunion #farmers #byefelicia #podcast #podcastsincolor #blackmedia #independentmedia
