In this episode of the Epigenetics Podcast, we caught up with Jop Kind from Hubrecht Institute to talk about his work on single cell DamID, EpiDamID, and Lamina Associated Domains (LADs). Jop Kind started out developing single cell DamID (scDamID), based on the DamID technique. First, this technique was adapted to a microscopic readout which enabled them to follow the localisation of chromatin domains after cell division. Next, the lab expanded this technique into the NGS space and created genome-wide maps of nuclear lamina Interactions in single human cells. Since LADs are in a heterochromatic chromatin context, the lab expanded scDamID into the epigenetic space. Wanneer wordt geluid muziek? Bestaat goede muzieksmaak? Waarom is Snollebollekes het bewijs dat muziek slim maakt? Kan Bob Dylan zingen? Mark en Louise vuren vele domme vragen af op muziekwetenschapper Evert Bisschop Boele, en krijgen vele slimme antwoorden terug. Wat bepaalt je muzieksmaak? Heb je betere muzieksmaak als je intelligenter bent? Waarom ontroert muziek? Wordt muziek beter als muzikanten drugs gebruiken? Bestaat er een succesformule voor een hit? En bestaat er een muzikaal gen? Evert geloof van niet. ‘Vroeger dachten we dat talent aangeboren was, maar nu kijken we daar anders naar. Talent zien we nu meer als ontwikkelingsmogelijkheden, en de manier waarop je gebruik maakt van omstandigheden.' Wanneer wordt je eerste vioolgekras muziek in plaats van herrie? Volgens Evert is er geen scheidslijn, en of muziek “muziek” is hangt af van de luisteraar. ‘Je kunt van muziek genieten, maar mensen gebruiken muziek ook om te martelen.' Waarom doet Evert onderzoek naar shantykoren? ‘Er wordt soms neerbuigend gedaan over volksmuziek, maar dat is volledig onterecht. Ik heb echt een broertje dood aan rangordes in muziek. De ene muziek is niet meer waard dan de ander. Ik vind in het algemeen dat de kunst-  en muziekwereld toch nog vaak teveel naar zichzelf kijkt. Ik ben meer geïnteresseed in wat een ander beweegt.' Wat is het verschil tussen een musicus en een muzikant? ‘Rondom de musicus hangt het aura van klassiek opgeleid, een professional die heel goed is op zijn instrument. Dat heeft natuurlijk zijn waarde, maar ik voel mezelf meer een muzikant. Iemand die openstaat voor allerlei vormen van muziek maken, zingen, uitproberen… Het conservatorium leidt musici op, maar wat mij betreft mogen ze wel wat meer muzikanten opleiden.' 'Domme vragen bestaan niet' , zeggen docenten altijd. In de podcast Domme Vragen, Slimme Mensen, laten Mark en Louise zien dat dat niet waar is: domme vragen bestaan wel degelijk, maar de antwoorden die je erop krijgt, zijn vaak wel heel interessant! Ongehinderd door enige kennis van zaken stellen ze domme, kortzichtige vragen aan deskundigen in verschillende vakgebieden. Van die vragen die jij stiekem ook hebt, maar nooit durfde te vragen: zij stellen ze zonder enige vorm van schaamte, zodat jij het niet meer hoeft te doen. Evert Bisschop Boele is leading lector van het Kenniscentrum Kunst & Samenleving en daarbinnen lector Kunsteducatie van het lectoraat Lifelong Learning in Music aan het Prins Claus Conservatorium, Hanzehogeschool Groningen. Hij leidt de Onderzoeksgroep Kunsteducatie bestaande uit docent-onderzoekers van Prins Claus Conservatorium, Academie Minerva, de Pedagogische Academie en de Master Kunsteducatie van de Hanzehogeschool.

Deze ruime bestuurservaring wil hij inzetten om de Protestantse Theologische Universiteit als toonaangevend centrum van onderwijs en onderzoek verder te profileren. Boele heeft kwaliteit en professionaliteit scherp in het vizier. Dat toonde hij in uiteenlopende maatschappelijke en kerkelijke functies, in het bedrijfsleven en in zijn onderwijs op het gebied van economie, organisatiekunde en ethiek. Kees Boele is per 16 maart 2020 toetreden tot het College van Bestuur. De Protestantse Theologische Universiteit heeft er alle vertrouwen in met Kees Boele innovatief en creatief te kunnen floreren.

Jeff has a unique background as a coach, in that he was a distance runner in high school and college. He moved to Boulder, Colorado, to train, and found himself coaching the jumps at Lyons High School, just north of Boulder. He took the challenge of becoming a great jumps coach seriously, and that meant taking a deep dive into the speed and power world. Jeff has a tremendous understanding of how distance runners can benefit from that training. We get a bit technical during the interview, which I love because a successful coach, one who already knows how to develop athletes and has a culture where kids work hard and love the sport, can better understand how lifting and multi-throw may fit into their training plans. Example: Jeff coached Paul Roberts, who finished fifth at Footlocker and made the world cross country team as a junior in high school (and I should note that Lyons HS has less than 300 students). Jeff shares that before they did focused work in the weight room, Paul would run his last 400m of a 1,600m race in 61-62, and run his last 400m of a 3,200m in 64-65. Fast forward to Paul’s senior year and he was closing in 58, and even 57-point, in the 1,600m, and was able to close in 61 in the 3.200m. Finally, Jeff has had the chance to not only go through the Altis coaching education offerings, but he has a close relationship with Dan Pfaff, one of the best track and field coaches in the world (many say THE best). Jeff Boele discusses how he has grown as a coach by attending the Altis high performance center in Arizona. Jeff is the new developmental coach of the Roots Running Project, a post collegiate running group in Boulder, CO. Prior to his coaching with Roots Jeff was one of the most successful high school coaches in Colorado. Thanks for your time Jeff!
