Leadership isn't a skill most lawyers learn about until forced to (on the job). This is probably why I get so many questions from lawyers about how to be an effective leader. And why I wanted to bring today's guest on to talk about the qualities of a good leader. Join me and fellow lawyer, podcast host, and law firm owner, Brian Beckcom, for an insightful discussion about what makes a good leader and the leadership qualities to adopt for yourself. In this episode of the Alternative Litigation Strategies podcast, host Kevin Skrzysowski interviews Brian Beckcom, an AI expert, trial lawyer, and computer scientist, about the impact of artificial intelligence on the legal profession and beyond.  Brian, who leads VB Attorneys and has earned hundreds of millions of dollars for his clients, shares his insights on AI's evolution from the early 1990s to today.  He explains how modern AI, particularly self-learning neural networks, differ fundamentally from earlier technology. Kevin and Brian also discuss current practical applications of AI on the practice of law, including discovery requests, depositions, and brief writing, emphasizing that while AI can process vast amounts of information quickly, human judgment remains crucial in interpreting and applying that information. This episode also covers concerns about AI's potential to create misinformation and the challenges of regulating this rapidly evolving technology.

Welcome to 2025 and the first episode of the year! If you've been following along through 2024, you know I've intentionally pulled back from regular guest interviews. Instead, I've primarily focused on weekly updates and reflections on the latest happenings at the intersection of business, technology, and human experience. However, dialogues aren't completely off the table. However, they'll only make the cut when they're with people and on topics I genuinely want to engage with, people I feel bring unique perspectives to the table and aren't afraid to tackle the big, messy questions we all need to confront with me. When I met Brian Beckcom, I knew he was that kind of person.Brian's a trial lawyer with over 25 years of experience, which may seem off-brand. However, he's far from it. He's also a computer scientist and deep thinker with a passion for ethics and philosophy. With his unorthodox background and dynamic suite of experiences, I couldn't resist recording a conversation. Our shared yet distinct experiences give us a unique lens to explore how AI is challenging what it means to be human, forcing us to reevaluate long-ignored ideas around ethics and philosophy, and redefining how we measure value in a world increasingly dominated by technology. To set expectations, this wasn't an interview—it was a dynamic conversation where the two of us wrestled with urgent questions about the future. How do we navigate the growing influence of AI without losing what makes us uniquely human? What risks do we take if we fail to revive the importance of ethics in decision-making? And perhaps most importantly, how do we ensure we're asking the right questions now, before it's too late?I walked away from the conversation energized and more thoughtful than ever, and I hope you will too.Show Notes:In this inaugural episode of Future-Focused for 2025, Christopher talks with Brian Beckcom, a seasoned trial lawyer with degrees in computer science and philosophy, to explore the deep intersections of technology, law, and human experience. The primary focus of the conversation is around the philosophical and ethical implications of AI, discussing its rapid advancements, the fundamental questions it raises about human consciousness, and its potential to reshape reality as we know it. The conversation also touches on practical applications of AI in law and medicine, the importance of intentional thinking, and the need for diverse perspectives in navigating our AI-driven future. Join Christopher and Brian for a thought-provoking start to the year as they challenge listeners to reclaim their attention and think critically about the world evolving around them.00:00 - Introduction and Welcome01:13 - Guest Introduction: Brian Beckcom04:16 - AI's Impact on Professional Fields10:19 - Philosophical Implications of AI25:22 - The Turing Test and AI's Evolution31:55 - Implications of Quantum Mechanics35:06 - AI and Consciousness38:53 - Ethical Considerations in AI51:48 - The Importance of Reflective Thinking57:12 - Conclusion and Final Thoughts#ai #ethics #philosophy #futureofwork #leadership

He and David discuss a wide range of topics starting with the role education plays in creating a firm foundation on which to build success.  They also discuss how AI is going to impact our ability to communicate, how to use pacing and stories to be persuasive, and how taking the middle path leads to success while helping others. To explore how to get unstuck on your mission, put your purpose into practice, and convert your ideas into impact book a discovery call with David here https://calendly.com/david-peoplewithpurpose/30min   KEY TAKEAWAYS All successful people can work with groups, are self-motivated, and not afraid to set challenging goals. Successful businesses have a purpose that goes beyond making money. We are reaching the point where many people cannot tell the difference between AI and something a human has created.  Humans have always used stories to communicate and find common understanding.  Never start a persuasive conversation by telling someone that they are wrong.  Be realistic about what drives people and use that when trying to persuade others. By providing what others need, you can always make money ethically  Law is the manifestation of our ethical beliefs about certain things.   BEST MOMENTS “You have to have some purpose beyond making money.” “A moral person tries to get those economic incentives to line up with the moral incentives.” “I believe that in general the middle path is usually the correct one.”   EPISODE RESOURCES https://www.instagram.com/brianbeckcomlawyer https://www.vbattorneys.com https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCI5qM4nBh5xEZOb0jDfiAjw ABOUT THE SHOW People with purpose make a difference. Piracy, Kidnapping, & The Most Famous Case of the Past 20 Years: A Discussion of the Captain Phillips Case I was recently a guest on the “Great Trials” podcast. Great Trials is a wonderful podcast hosted by Steve Lowry and Yvonne Godfrey in which they discuss in details some of the most famous trials in the country. In this episode, we delve into the infamous Captain Phillips case. When the U.S. merchant ship the Maersk Alabama was hijacked by armed Somali pirates, it made worldwide news. When American Navy Seals rescued the crew, that also made national news. And when Tom Hanks made a movie about Captain Richard Phillips, the Hollywood publicity machine ensured that the situation was broadcast all over the world for years. Brian Beckcom and his law firm, VB Attorneys, uncovered the real story of Captain Phillips, including reckless conduct, negligent orders, and disregarding the directives of the United States Government and other Western powers. This is the true story of Captain Phillips, told by Brian Beckcom, the lawyer who represented the crew against Captain Phillips and the negligent shipping company, the lawyer who ultimately forced the companies to settle with his clients after years of denying any responsibility.  And now I give you, the true story of the Maersk Alabama, told by the lawyer who won the case.

The events were depicted in a Hollywood blockbuster called “Captain Phillips” starring Tom Hanks. Brian and his firm countered a massive Hollywood publicity campaign that portrayed Captain Phillips as a hero and the crew as lazy layabouts, when in fact the exact opposite was true. The case resulted in a confidential settlement for each crew member. It also changed the way the shipping industry provides security to the men and women who travel in dangerous, pirate-infested waters   Guest Bio: Brian Beckcom Brian Beckcom is one of the leading lawyers of his generation. As we close out season three here on Nobody Knows Your Story, my final guest is Brian Beckcom. This was a positive experience for me and once again, I spent an hour doing something I really enjoy... talking.Brian is one driven individual. He lost his Mother to breast cancer when he was ten, and though his Mother's passing forever changed him, it also motivated him. As we talked, he shared how this event so early in his life helped drive him to succeed. To succeed on the basketball court, in the court of law, and for the past few years, as he's competitively participated in Brazilian jiu-jitsu.I've often said that when I conduct my podcast interviews, that when the "talk story" session is over, I feel like I've just made a new friend. As you listen to Brian share his life story, I think you'll understand why I feel the way I do. Brian cares about people, so naturally I'm going to be a fan. He also likes to have fun, loves Maui, is into physical and mental fitness, he's a Dad, a husband, and enjoys mathematics. Mathematics? Well, I didn't say we agreed on everything.  Take a listen to Brian's story and you too will see why Brian is such an outgoing, likable guy. Oh yeah, a damn good trial lawyer too.Brian is the host of "Lessons from Leaders," a podcast that features military combat veterans, sports stars, judges, coaches, spiritual leaders, and more.  Brianbeckcom.org

Today, my guest is Brian Beckcom. Brian runs a law firm out of Houston, Texas, which is a very successful personal injury law firm that has been growing for the past 20+ years and has had some really interesting cases. We talk a lot about how you go from the initial small law firm and how you take it to that next level with multiple attorneys, lots of staff, and a well-run business that allows you the opportunity to, as he says, spend as much time away from the office as he does inside the office. I hope you enjoy it as much as I did.  In this episode, Neil and Brian discuss: Brian's journey to building his own personal injury practice.  The quantum steps from starting a practice to a thriving business.  Productivity, efficiency, and having the right people in the right seats. Ways to write a book (and make it fast and easy!).    Key Takeaways: Insurance companies pay millions to stop people from suing others so they don't have to pay, but they are the first to sue for any slight.  Build your firm understanding what you want your life to be like. Build your firm around that. If you want to grow your firm without going insane, you must have the right people around you, in the right seats, and doing the right job.  If you've been writing a blog, sending newsletters, or making videos for your business for years, you've already got the content for a book, it just needs to be repurposed and reformatted.    "Don't think necessarily about what you want your business to look like, think about what you want your life to look like and then the business fits into that piece." —  Brian Beckcom  Get in touch with Brian Beckcom: Website: https://www.brianbeckcom.org/ (https://www.brianbeckcom.org/)  Website: https://www.vbattorneys.com/ (https://www.vbattorneys.com/)  Podcast: https://www.brianbeckcom.org/tag/podcast-episodes (https://www.brianbeckcom.org/tag/podcast-episodes)  YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/c/VBAttorneys (https://www.youtube.com/c/VBAttorneys)  LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/brianbeckcom/ (https://www.linkedin.com/in/brianbeckcom/)  Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/brianbeckcomlawyer/ (https://www.instagram.com/brianbeckcomlawyer/)  Twitter: https://twitter.com/BrianBeckcom (https://twitter.com/BrianBeckcom)  Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/vbattorneys (https://www.facebook.com/vbattorneys)  Thank you to our sponsors!
