Welcome back to the Alt Goes Mainstream podcast.Today's episode is with a founder who is building mission-critical software for private equity firms.I sat down in Citywire's London studio with Venkat Subramaniam, the Co-Founder of DealsPlus, to discuss why he has built a digital solution to streamline, digitize, and automate the management of complex holding and capital structures for private equity firms.Historically, private equity firms have relied on humans and manual processes to manage and track cap tables, transactions, and entities. This process has required significant human intervention and has often been rife with errors, making deals harder to consummate and transactions. Venkat has taken his 15 years of experience advising private equity managers on cross-border transactions, most recently as an Associate Partner at EY UK, to build DealsPlus to create a single source of truth for capital structures for private equity firms. DealsPlus works with a number of industry-leading private equity firms and is backed by a private equity firm with $38B in AUM.Venkat and I had a fascinating conversation about the challenges private equity firms face with managing and tracking transactions and portfolio companies. We discussed:Why it's been so hard to create a cap table management solution for private equity. Why it's much harder to build software for private equity firms than venture capital firms. How private markets can move from the Excel Age to the Digital Age.How to build software that provides a single source of truth. The atomic unit of value in private markets.Building an end-to-end platform versus building a point solution. What's next in post-investment ops tech innovation? Thanks Venkat for coming on the show to share your thoughts and wisdom on private markets tech.A word from AGM podcast sponsor, Ultimus Fund SolutionsThis episode of Alt Goes Mainstream is brought to you by Ultimus Fund Solutions, a leading full-service fund administrator for asset managers in private and public markets. What a wonderful way to kick off the New Year with Algy Hall. Happy New Year, all my dear listeners; so grateful to see you here with my guests in a brand new year. Today, it's one of those conversation that put a big smile on my face. Algy writes about investing but is also an author and illustrator of children's books; we have some laughs about very serious and less serious matters. Algy Hall is an award-winning financial journalist and author of Four Ways to Beat the Market: A Practical Guide to stock-screening Strategies to help you pick winning shares. For over a decade, Algy followed several market-beating screening strategies in his weekly column for Investors' Chronicle, an FT-owned, leading British investment magazine. Since 2022, Algy has been the investment editor of Citywire Elite Companies, where he has helped develop Citywire's objective and powerful stock-rating system based on the level of backing shares have from the world's best-performing portfolio managers. He is also the author and illustrator of 11 children's picture books. We start the conversation with a very personal story that sheds more light on Algy's relationship with money and curiosity about investing. I'm a big proponent of using screening in the investment process. I've tested and back-tested a variety of screens throughout my two-decade-long career. Algy takes on a number of stock screens in his book Four Ways to Beat the Market, a Practical Guide to Screen Strategies to Help You Pick Winning Shares. The book came out in 2023, and I believe it belongs among the classics in the genre — James O'Shaughnessy's What Works on Wall Street, Ken Fisher's 1984 Super Stocks, and Joel Greenblatt's The Little Book the Beats the Market. My guest explains how stock screens give investors an edge. One of my biggest revelations over the years has been the power of filters, and I notice the more experienced, the more seasoned investors use very deliberate filters in deciding what kind of stocks, news, and even people make it into their portfolios, days, and lives. We talk about quality stock, contrarian value investing, dividend stock approach, and momentum investing. As serious as the topics might be today, Algy shares his passion for children's books and tells the story of the scariest monster in the world. Stay tuned until the end to hear how stories and fairy tales we heard as kids might have been hiding lessons, advice, and wisdom that we so desperately need as adults. I had so much fun recording with Algy, and I trust you'll enjoy the next hours with us as well. https://www.amazon.com/Four-Ways-Beat-Market-stock-screening/dp/0857199412/ref=tmm_pap_swatch_0?_encoding=UTF8&qid=&sr= Citywire Elite Companies link: https://citywire.com/elite-companies Illustration link: www.algy.co.uk Also mentioned in the episode: James O'Shaughnessy and Morgan Housel. For the latest episode of Mistakes Were Made, Alex and Frank are joined by Citywire's executive chairman and founder Lawrence Lever, AKA their boss.  A former lawyer and investigative journalist, Lawrence tells Alex and Frank about some of the mistakes he made when starting the business, what he learned from them, and how these lessons ultimately led to the success Citywire enjoys today.   Some early missteps include not taking all the advice on offer from renowned venture capitalist Hermann Hauser and trusting a rival to act honorably (spoiler alert: they didn't!).  We also discuss mistakes that the media can make when covering investment (Lawrence has some pointers for Alex on this), what fund managers often get wrong when starting their own shops, and why asset managers are probably nicer than investment bankers.   This is the last episode in the current series of Mistakes Were Made. We're taking a break over the summer and will be back September. Thank you for listening.
