In February of 1975, fans in the NHL had to do a double take when they looked at the standings. That's because alongside the Montreal Canadiens and the defending champion Flyers was a rag-tag group of castoffs who scored just often enough to give their goalie a lead, and he would do the rest. Rogie Vachon and the L.A. Kings were playing inspiring hockey and were on the cover of Sports Illustrated this week 50 years ago. After winning three Stanley Cups in Montreal, Vachon was now in his 4th season in Southern California and the 5'7 goaltender was bigger than ever as fans began to really notice they had something special as the last line of defense at the Forum in Inglewood. "Save, Vachon!" was a common phrase heard numerous times a game from Bob Miller, the voice of the Kings and a special bond between Rogie and the fans of L.A. was formed. He would go on to be the first player in Kings history to have his number retired in 1985 and 30 years later, he was inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame. Despite never winning a Cup after his playing days in Montreal ended, Vachon made a lasting impression on Los Angeles as both a player and a General Manager. In 1988, under the ownership of Bruce McNall, Vachon was instrumental in making one of the biggest deals in sports history acquiring Wayne Gretzky from the Edmonton Oilers. The Great One was now in L.A. and the NHL was about to explode on the West Coast. Hear how this hockey lifer who played as a kid with the grown ups and slept in the car when they would go grab a beer afterwards came from a rural farm in Canada and ended up being a member of royalty in L.A. SERIES 3 EPISODE 3: COUNTDOWN WITH KEITH OLBERMANN A-Block (1:44) SPECIAL COMMENT: The selection of Kamala Harris's Vice President is a big story and I'm really interested and it could be Joe Biden and I'd go "Whatever You Want, Queen." The lead story today is ANOTHER poll explosion She's ahead in the Morning Consult poll 48-44. A week ago she was ahead by ONE point. Two weeks ago TRUMP was ahead by TWO points. That's a seven point swing since President Biden bowed out. They polled on six key attributes in seven swing states: she wins not too old in a landslide. She wins "mentally fit" in a landslide. She wins "less dangerous" in a landslide. She wins "cares about me" by as much as ten. She's tied with him on "more presidential." She's up. by three in SurveyUSA. CBS (which never had Biden ahead) has her up by one. Decision Desk HQ shows her improved in nine of its ten battleground states (the only one she didn't improve on? Virginia, where she and Biden were each up by three). For the first time even Nate Silver's projection says she has the better chance of winning the electoral college – 53% – and winning it by 282 votes to 255 for Trump – and has her up in the polls by one and nine tenths points, largely because HIS average of the polls in Pennsylvania has her up by a point and in Michigan by just under three. Nate Silver has Kamala Harris within six points of leading in… Florida. ALSO THERE'S THE VP THING. Reuters reported Tim Walz and Josh Shapiro are the finalists. It might be Mark Kelly in the mix, too. Sure great fine get Walz new younger glasses. End advice. AND NOW WE KNOW WHY RFK MADE THE BEAR VIDEO: Yes, sometimes you eat the bear and sometimes the bear eats you and sometimes when you try to get ahead of The New Yorker story about you dumping in Central Park the dead carcass of a bear cub you say another motorist killed, it turns out there were stories the bear had stab wounds, and oh yeah the magazine has a PHOTO of you mocking the dead bear and in it your fly is unzipped. B-Block (29:45) THE WORST PERSONS IN THE WORLD: TWO Supreme Court Justices. Gorsuch threatens Biden. Thomas takes more trip courtesy Harlan Crow Travel Agency. Elon Musk warns of civil war in Europe - for at least the fifth time in ten months. Does he own a civil war distributorship or something? C-Block (38:30) THINGS I PROMISED NOT TO TELL: The anniversary looms: my greatest scoop proves you can accomplish great things by doing nothing and just letting everybody else do all the work for you. I broke the trade of Wayne Gretzky to the L-A Kings – as important a moment as there has been in the history of the development of hockey in this country – by just answering the phone a couple times. I mean I didn't even have to leave my office. The Gretzky Trade And My Absolutely Unnecessary Role in Breaking It.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

EPISODE 156: COUNTDOWN WITH KEITH OLBERMANN A-Block (1:41) SPECIAL COMMENT: It doesn't MATTER whether Marjorie Taylor Greene really is so stupid that when she insisted yesterday she's never seen any Putin plan to invade Europe, she doesn't know Ukraine is in Europe. All that matters is whether she makes sure that something like 51% of the COUNTRY is so stupid that IT doesn't know Ukraine is in Europe. It's MAKE AMERICA STUPID AGAIN. And its weapon is a rapidly strengthening, rapidly escalating feedback loop centering around Fox "News" and we goddamned better do something about it soon. Because not only is it being used against Ukraine and for Russia, but it's now reached the equivalent to tertiary syphilis: McCarthy gives Carlson meaningless January 6 video which Carlson lies and says is 44,000 hours of the Zapruder film so that yesterday Rep. Barry The January 5th Tour Guide Loudermilk can lie and say "this means we need a new January 6 Committee to investigate the OLD January 6 Committee!"  The long-term solution would be a truth based liberal television network with a billion dollars behind it, but who's going to do THAT? The short-term solution is Senate hearings into Fox "News" and Murdoch and whether its interest in destroying the current form of government is funded in any way by a foreign power. It doesn't have to BE funded by a foreign power. Just at the moment, we just need something we can put on against the Barry Loudermilk Hearings To Clear Barry Loudermilk!  (10:20) IN SPORTS: Stop The World Baseball Classic before it kills again (18:35) THE WORST PERSONS IN THE WORLD: A bad day for Kellyanne Conway as she reveals Kushner was the only Trump family member to make billions during the Junta, and then shocks the world by confirming China is sending arms... to China! But she's no match for Marianne "Non Disclosure Disagreement" Williamson, and SHE'S no match for Ron "I Eat Pudding With My Fingers" DeSantis. B-Block (24:30) THINGS I PROMISED NOT TO TELL: It was the greatest scoop of my career to that point, an exclusive told in pantomime by the athlete we were staking out, another gift handed to me without a moment's hesitation by a hockey and football owner and curmudgeon named Harry Ornest. And it would've upended the entire coverage of the 1991 National Football League draft. Except the cameraman forgot to roll tape. I'll be getting over it any day now. C-Block (39:00) EVERY DOG HAS ITS DAY: Archie, a Missouri puppy, was shot in the leg (40:00) FRIDAYS WITH THURBER: Two of his stories of man not against others, but against life: "Nine Needles" and "The Mouse Who Went To The Country."See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

EPISODE 121: COUNTDOWN WITH KEITH OLBERMANN A-Block (1:43) SPECIAL COMMENT: Yesterday I proposed that to crowd this corrupt Republican farce, "The Subcommittee on the Weaponization of the Government" off the stage, the Democrats needed a similar investigation in the Senate. Suddenly there are far more important reasons than politics and counter-programming. The New York Times' post-mortem on The Durham "Investigation" shows ethical corner cutting and possible criminality. And the deeper dives into the ex-FBI agent arrested Monday show the outlines of the possibility Charles McGonigal took Russian money long before 2021. What if these are just two pictures of the same conspiracy taken at different times? What if this is ALL about an effort to protect Russian Government Intelligence Agencies, and Trump? And even worse: what if The New McCarthyism of the "Weaponization" subcommittee is just the newest photo of the same cover-up?  Start that investigation now, Senators. B-Block (14:57) EVERY DOG HAS ITS DAY: Cookie, in Ft. Lauderdale (16:07) THE WORST PERSONS IN THE WORLD: Sports Owner James Dolan-Moron; Fascist Congressmen threaten an investigation of one company refusing to start paying another company for a product it currently gets for free; and George "Jew-Ish" Santos turns out to have posted offensive Hitler jokes (22:30) THINGS I PROMISED NOT TO TELL: Numerology time. One birthday boy's greatest scoop, about a guy whose birthday was the day before, that aired on 8/8/88. EPISODE 76: COUNTDOWN WITH KEITH OLBERMANN A-Block (1:44) SPECIAL COMMENT: New leak to Washington Post clearly confesses Trump stole documents, but insists he didn't do it for evil reasons, he did it for EGO. He's not a TRAITOR! He's just a hoarder! He's not a foreign spy who might face the death penalty. He's just a collector! He's like YOU: YOU'D keep a White House cocktail napkin wouldn't you? So HE kept a White House Ultra-Classified Document (or 200 of them) (3:28) This transparent attempt to minimize the charge and the sentence again suggests it's not only unbelievably bad for Trump but it's far worse than we could possibly imagine. (6:30) "He seemed motivated by a more basic desire not to give up what he believed was his property," the Post writes, and suddenly I'm watching Bugs Bunny and Daffy Duck breaking into the den of the 40 Thieves and Daffy sees all the diamonds and gold and screams "IT'S MINE! DOWN, DOWN, DOWN! GO, GO, GO! MINE, MINE, MINE!" He's not Julius Rosenberg! He's Daffy Duck! (9:35) The Guardian also reports evidence secret documents were mixed with post-presidential letters in Trump's desk drawer. What collector doesn't do THAT? (10:15) Trump still scheduled to formalize his 2024 candidacy today, even as a London paper reports Murdoch called him personally to withdraw support. B-Block (16:08) EVERY DOG HAS ITS DAY: Spaghetti, again (16:58) POSTSCRIPTS TO THE NEWS: Not only did Katie Hobbs win, but she was right about not debating Lake. And we need to worry about the phenomenon of not just TV types, but TV newscasters, seeking office. Plus Jay Leno is recovering and he's nicer than you know, and NBC suspended the reporter who ran the fake Pelosi conspiracy theory (21:31) THE WORST PERSONS IN THE WORLD: Virginia's hypocritical lieutenant governor takes on Elon "Bloatware" Musk and Herschel Walker attacking how Senator Warnock is raising his kids, for the dishonors. C-Block (25:00) THINGS I PROMISED NOT TO TELL: Not one but two of my ex-ESPN colleagues entered the media wing of hockey's Hall of Fame last night. He joins Scott to discuss this year's games, as well as Olympics history. Guest: Brian Williams, OC, veteran sportscaster - CFL historian Paul Woods's new book, Year of the Rocket, chronicles the era when Raghib "Rocket" Ismael joined the Toronto Argos, under the ownership of John Candy, Wayne Gretzky and Bruce McNall. Guest: Paul Woods, Canadian football historian and author - NDP Leader Jagmeet Singh has requested that new Governor General Mary Simon not call a snap election, if Prime Minister Trudeau asks for one. Trudeau is not pleased with Singh over this. It all raises and important point: for weeks now, the media has treated an upcoming election as a given, but what does it mean about our government that we are so fatalistic? What is the point of the song and dance if there is no chance that an election will not be called? Guest: Henry Jacek.

Iconic rock band KISS opens their shows with the p.a. announcer stating 'You wanted the best, you got the best! The hottest band in the world...' We'll, if you'll allow us to riff on that, we're throwing out this today - 'You wanted the best, you got the best! The greatest guest list ever assembled to talk Kings and Devils...' How great you ask? We have not just one, but two members of the Hockey Hall of Fame - and another guy who will be inducted into the Hall on the first ballot in just a few years. We also have BOTH the long-time voice of the LA Kings and his trusty sidekick for more than 20 years. Need more? How about three members of the Kings' 1993 Stanley Cup Finals team? Plus - that's right, PLUS - we have the current captain of the LA Kings! So, without any further hype and build-up, here's the rundown for this week's show... - Dustin Brown will help us close the book on the Conference Finals vs. Phoenix. He'll give the inside scoop he hasn't shared with anybody else regarding some of the stuff that was said in the handshake line and offer his personal thoughts on the situation. - Luc Robitaille is going to give us his highs and lows from the last 19 years and he's going to identify his pick for a surprise goal in the Finals. Remember, he correctly called out Jordan Nolan before the second round. So, let's see who he has in mind this time around. - Former Kings owner Bruce McNall makes another visit to MayorsManor. We'll talk all about 1993, his relationship with Tim Leiweke, what Wayne Gretzky recently told him and get his pick for this year's Finals vs. New Jersey. - The incomparable Bob Miller will join us to share many stories and just wow us with his brilliance. Like many of our other guests today, he may just give us a prediction also. - Mike Modano, the only non-Kings oriented guest on today's show may seem like an odd inclusion. However, after we get done chatting with him you'll understand why we invited him on. And for good fun, we'll also see if he can help us determine who is the best American-born hockey player - him or Jeremy Roenick. - Let's see, 1993 Stanley Cup Finals...who was a central figure in that story? That's right, none other than Marty McSorley will be joining us to give his perspective on what happened in '93 and how he's still dealing with it today. - We're not sure if he'll be wearing a blue bandanna while calling in, but Kelly Hrudey will check in to offer his take on both the '93 Kings team and the current squad. - Jim Fox, our unofficial playoff correspondent the last few seasons, makes a return trip in today. We'll hit him up for some memories and some analysis. And of course, joining me as co-host again this week will be Dennis Bernstein of The Fourth Period magazine. He and I will debate the finer points brought up by today's guests and we'll offer some predictions on the 2012 Stanley Cup Finals set to kick off tomorrow between the LA Kings and New Jersey Devils. It's going to be more Kings vs Devils talk than you'll find anywhere else! MayorsManor proudly presents our Stanley Cup Finals preview show for your listening enjoyment... NOW AVAILABLE ON iTunes
