In a world increasingly disconnected from nature, architects like Nick De Klerk are pioneering a transformative approach to design that reconnects humans with their fundamental need for natural environments. "Access and proximity to nature are a basic human need," Nick emphasizes, drawing from his childhood experiences growing up close to nature.Biophilic design is about creating moments of awe, surprise and wonder. Nick describes these as "unexpected transitions" that take your breath away - moving from a constrained, dark space into a light-filled, plant-abundant area that immediately transforms your sensory experience. These moments of awe are critical, creating what he calls a "transformational experience" where people don't just occupy a space, but are fundamentally changed by it.We also talk about how we can preserve Heritage while embracing nature. The key to sustainable design lies in respecting existing structures. "The greenest building is one that already exists," Nick quotes, highlighting Purcell Architects' philosophy of working with heritage buildings. Their approach isn't about wholesale replacement, but sensitive enhancement - improving thermal performance, integrating natural elements, and maintaining the building's historical character.I wanted to explore also, the hotel concept they created for HIX, the Hotel Interiors Experience trade show. Nick and his team developed a concept around the idea of integrating food production, sustainability, and hospitality within a historic agricultural hall. They imagined this beautiful historical building transformed into a living, breathing space where guest rooms overlook a lush interior landscape. Vertical farming, natural light, and community spaces merge to create an environment that reconnects people with food production and natural cycles creating not just a sensory experience but also a community connection. It's about creating spaces that are "not just practical, but experiential" - where texture, light, and living elements combine to create profound human experiences. "People want to learn something or feel they've benefited from a space," he explains. When asked to imagine a world transformed by biophilic design, with a “magic brush of Biophilia” Nick's vision is profound. Cities reimagined as forests, where every element plays a crucial part in sustenance and survival. Not just literally with more trees, but metaphorically - creating interconnected, diverse, and mutually supportive environments. This approach isn't just about aesthetics. It's about recognising our deep, intrinsic connection to nature and creating spaces that allow humans to truly flourish. Biophilic design isn't a trend - it's a return to understanding our fundamental relationship with the natural world. As we face increasing environmental and health challenges, design can be a powerful tool for reconnection, sustainability, and hope.To watch the video with Nick de Klerk and Shida Salehi, Founder Customs Bureau and Yasmin Saad interior designer from Customs Bureau on the HIX Glass House Urban Retreat concept:https://vimeo.com/1023008814/ba6c8c1448The HIX Interview ahead of the event: https://www.hixevent.com/news/hix-co-present-hotel-bdc-purcell-x-glass-house-urban-retreatDuring the London Festival of Architecture, Nick De Klerk will be leading a tour on Sunday, June 14th that explores the Victorian industrial heritage of the area around the Business Design Centre (formerly the Royal Agricultural Hall). The tour will include several stops that highlight historical urban contexts and connections, such as:1. Myths like: ‘Why are all asylum seekers MEN?!' Don't they come for free healthcare?' ‘Illegal migrants are living in luxury hotels' ‘The asylum backlog is out of control!' Join us for the Media Storm LIVE SHOW! Tuesday 20th May 7pm, @ the Business Design Centre in Islington. Tickets available HERE Time for another weekly news debrief: we pick apart the most unhinged headlines and try to make sense of the mainstream media, helping you consume the news critically. This week, Katy Perry was blasted - into space, and in the media (4:50). As news broke that the Supreme Court ruled the legal definition of a woman is based on 'biological sex' (a ruling that didn't consult a single transgender person), we look at the rollbacks of queer rights around the world (10:20). Plus, how three front pages defined differently an attack on prison officers at HMP Frankland by the Manchester arena bomber's brother (22:32), a rebuttal against an ableist Daily Mail column on stammering (31:53), and why one article about asylum seekers living in 'luxury hotels' fails on facts (36:34). To keep Eyes on Palestine (41:02), we look at the case of Mohsen Mahdawi, a Palestinian student at Columbia university abducted by ICE in the US, and discuss a small but mighty change in a BBC headline. Resourcing Tomorrow divisional director Andrew Thake speaks with Proactive's Stephen Gunnion about the upcoming Resourcing Tomorrow event at the Business Design Centre in London from December 3rd to 5th, 2024. The theme for this year's event is “Breaking Out of the Echo Chamber,” aiming to expand beyond the mining industry's usual conversations. The event will feature over 300 speakers, including notable figures such as Mark Bristow from Barrick Gold, Ross Beaty from Equinox Gold, and Frank Giustra of the Fiore Group. Thake highlighted the inclusion of more OEMs such as Volvo Cars and Hyundai, alongside new investors like ESG funds. Christien Meinderstma is a Dutch designer who has a fascination with materials. She currently has an installation at the V&A, entitled Re-forming Waste, which shows new work based around her interest in linoleum, as well as technological advances with the material she has described as her first love, wool. Christien came to wider attention initially when she graduated from the Design Academy Eindhoven in 2003, with a book that catalogued a week's worth of objects confiscated at security checkpoints in Schipol Airport. She followed that up a few years later, with PIG 05049, an extraordinary tome which looked at all the products made using a single pig. Her work is the collections of MoMA, the V&A, and the Vitra Design Museum. Over the years, she has won numerous Dutch Design Awards, as well as creating the award for the prestigious Earthshot Prize. In this episode we talk about: working alone; experimenting with linoleum; her family's history with wool; the importance of provenance; defining failure and success; not being interested in selling things or mass production; working with the city of Rotterdam to find ways to deal with its wool; collaborating with a ‘wobot'; designing like a journalist, the energy of Design Academy Eindhoven; and the unexpected uses of a pig…We are delighted this episode has been sponsored by the Surface Design Show. The event of choice for architects and designers, it runs from 6-8 February at London's Business Design Centre and you can register for free at surfacedesignshow.com. We hope to see you there. For Paula Rowntree, Head of Workplace Design for LLOYDS BANKING GROUP, the office very much plays an important role in the workplace. For her it is the human connection, the corridor moments, saying hello, being creative, having conversations, seeing when someone is not ok. So when it comes to designing spaces, the focus is very much on the wellbeing of the people using the space, as well as the sustainability aspect, which is why Biophilic Design is such a positive element in a designer's bag. “Biophilic Design is incredibly important. It is that Deep-rooted connection to nature that we all have. To breathe fresh air, that emotion you get from being connected to nature.” Paula goes on to explain how years ago, the historic design trend was to take nature out of buildings, and make them a little more sterile and austere. Fortunately, that trend is shifting. Bringing in more greenery and timber elements, we feel calm and relax very quickly in a space. “Planting, naturally makes you feel better”. Paula will be speaking at the Workpace Design Show, taking place on 27 and 28 February 2023 in London. “Often, when we come to implement real planting, we might need to create a business case for it (we need watering systems, so there's a cost to install and maintain). But there is a whole array of plant elements we can bring into a space, from pretend plants, to preserved planting which may be simpler to deploy and gives illusion of planting.” Fortunately, Lloyds Banking Group have a strong sustainability agenda, so for Paula, nature-inspired design is a key to helping reach net-zero targets and encourage sustainable behaviour. With our planet in crises, temperatures are rising, it is a big overwhelming problem. “We are trying to get everyone in the bank thinking about sustainability. What can you do? That's where I started from, what can I do?” In one of the flagship branches of Lloyds, notably the one on Oxford Street (near Bond Street), Paula pushed the boundaries, as well as changing heating systems, lighting, furniture and fabrics she looked at planting. She installed High-raft moss discs, Preserved planting up at ceiling level, Plant pots with ground-level plants all putting oxygen back into the air, plus a Living wall on the outside with the brand element on the fascia. As a result, the bank colleagues feel very proud to explain what it's all about, especially the sustainability aspect. “Biophilia and planting becomes a visible statement” something that says that this company is committed to sustainability. “Also by putting planting back into the environment in branches, we are helping make people feel a little bit better in the work environment.” The spaces feel good, there's re-oxygenation, alongside brand messaging. “There is something so joyful, it makes you feel: wow this in an amazing space. We want to make them timeless, make them last, to be there for future generations, because planting does that right, it doesn't just stop.” Also note Paula will be speaking at #workspacedesignshow and I'll be chairing a panel discussion. Join me at the UK's biggest workspace event bringing you networking, thought leadership, and the latest products to transform our country's offices, taking place 27th & 28th February 2023 at Business Design Centre. In this episode, we chat with Ron Mitchell, MD of Global Lithium Resources who are a rapidly growing lithium exploration company with a focus on two highly prospective 100%-owned Western Australian projects - the Marble Bar Lithium Project (MBLP) in the Pilbara region and the Manna Lithium Project in the Goldfields region. Ron is an experienced commercial, business development and sales executive with +25 years of experience in the government, manufacturing, mining, renewable/conventional energy and natural resource sectors. He has extensive global experience in the lithium, battery materials and the electric vehicle industry, developing strategic collaboration and partnership opportunities with key members of the EV and battery materials supply chain, Ron is also a founding member of the London Metal Exchange (LME) Lithium Committee and currently presides as the inaugural Chairman. He discusses Global Lithium's two projects and how Australia is the number one jurisdiction for EV and electrification resources. Ron is also going to be speaking at “Resourcing Tomorrow”, which is Europe's largest and most in-depth mining conference. See below for details of how to book your discounted ticket for the event. KEY TAKEAWAYS The Manna Lithium Project has an initial maiden inferred mineral resource position of close to 10 million tonnes at 1.14% Global Lithium Resources recently acquired the remaining 20% of that project. First production is planned for 2026. The Pilbara exploration is yielding good results too. Western Australia is a good jurisdiction with plenty of potential, good infrastructure, and plenty of support. Lithium supplies are set to remain tight for at least the next 10 years, so some car manufacturers are looking at having direct agreements with mining companies. The world needs Australia´s minerals to deliver its green targets. When it comes to creating a better world for our children, lithium has a big role to play. BEST MOMENTS ‘It's an advanced exploration. We have completed around 30,000 metres of RC drilling, and about 6000 metres of diamond drilling and the results are quite simply outstanding. ´ ‘Here in Western Australia, we're lucky, we've got a community that's become wealthy on the back of the resource sector.' ‘The globe cannot achieve its electrification ambitions without Australia.' In this episode, we chat with Pleasure Mnisi, a mining manager at Exxaro Resources who talks to us about his passion which is around the subject of “Moving from Digital Strategy to Operations”Pleasure has an industrial Engineering background and has been in the mining industry for 15 years and working for Anglo-American for nearly a decade and was a nominated finalist for South Africa's rising star in Mining & Minerals back in 2020.He is also going to be speaking at “Resourcing Tomorrow,” which is Europe's largest and most in-depth mining conference dedicated to global sustainability goals and is coming to London this November. This Mines and Money event will be held at the Business Design Centre from the 29th of November to the 1st of December. Find out how to attend this fantastic event to learn from and network with industry leaders below. Use Rob´s code to get a discounted ticket. KEY TAKEAWAYS When it comes to transformational change and technology most mines face remarkably similar challenges. The best way to decide where to focus your efforts is to understand what problems you are trying to solve. Winning ideas come out of that. The wrong culture eats strategy for breakfast. Basing your decisions on hard facts helps to cut through resistance that can hold you back. Getting accurate feedback quickly is essential in mining. If the change does not work, you need to know fast, otherwise, you burn a lot of money. Don't be scared to invest money in trying things out. If you don 't , you stand still. Deploying technology properly pays huge dividends. In the episode, Pleasure shares an example that brought a mine into production, one year early. What the market wants, and the political situation can also play a role in deciding what technology should be used and how it will be deployed. The entire operational chain including contractors and transport needs to be readied to handle the step-up in production. Technology enhances safety, which helps to convince the unions despite possible job losses. In South Africa, there have been relatively few overall job losses. Instead, the resulting growth has meant most people have been retrained or taken to the next level. BEST MOMENTS‘A lot of operations do not know where to start. ´‘Mining is not as agile, as other industries,'‘It's one thing, talking strategy. It's another thing being on the coalface.'‘Simplicity is the ultimate sophistication. Keep it simple.' In this episode, we chat with David Stein, President & CEO of Kuya Silver, who is a listed silver-focused mining company Kuya's flagship asset is the high-grade Bethania Silver Mine in Peru.David has a geology, mine engineering and finance background and his passion is to build long-term investments in both people and resource assets like Kuya. He tells us more about the company, its projects, and the challenges of mining investment, in the current climate. He is also going to be speaking at the upcoming Mines and Money event in London at the end of November so be sure to reach out to him there in person if you have any further questions or want more information. KEY TAKEAWAYS When the silver bull market comes there will be a lot of investors funnelling into very few companies. Kuya Silver owns 100% of the Bethania Silver Mine, which is a high-grade silver polymetallic resource, in Peru. Over the past two years through acquisition and land purchase they have added 5,300 hectares to the resource. The mine can be put into operation very quickly once the market strengthens. They have recently made new discoveries at Bethania and have further promising targets to explore. Over the past two years, they have focused on acquisitions to strengthen their portfolio. Including buying the Silver Kings mine in Canada. Once gold moves, silver will too. It always has. The current macroeconomic situation should lead to the price of gold rising. Silver shortages seem to be getting tighter and tighter, which will be good for the price. Despite political changes in Peru, the operating environment has changed very little. Peru is a large and diverse country, so the challenges are different in each area. Kuya is lucky enough to be in an area that is easy to operate in. Kuya has high-grade, minimal-risk quality silver assets that are growing. Yet, right now, the valuation is still next to nothing. BEST MOMENTS‘I did pick up silver companies and I was the first analyst back in 2004, or five around there to pick up First Majestic and Fortuna. ´‘The challenge in the industry right now, including with Kuya is to, is to recruit these sorts of longer-term buy and hold investors.'‘I think the macro is good. But the micro is even better for silver right now.' In this episode, we chat with Greg Cochran, MD of Aurora Energy Metals. It is an Australian-owned company focused on the exploration and development of its Aurora Energy Metals Project in Oregon, USA. The project hosts a defined uranium resource and is prospective for lithium. Greg is a highly regarded international mining executive with over 30 years of experience in general management and in senior commercial and technical roles. With a background in mine engineering, he has operated at the MD/CEO level for the last 15 years, in Africa, Australia and Asia, in a broad spectrum of minerals including uranium, potash and other industrial minerals and base metals. He tells us more about Aurora Energy Metals and discusses, in more depth, the uranium market which is his expertise.Greg is also going to be speaking at the upcoming Mines and Money event in London at the end of November 2022. So, be sure to reach out to him there in person if you have any further questions. Enjoy the episode. KEY TAKEAWAYS There is a uranium revival on the way. Energy security is fundamental and the benefits of nuclear are being recognised. Their Oregon project is one of the largest uranium projects in the US. Mining uranium at scale is far more environmentally sustainable than the old approach of hundreds of small operations. Having both lithium and uranium to mine provides Aurora with the ability to pivot between the two. The mineral Acts that have been passed by Biden are supportive of minerals, which is good news for Aurora Energy Metals. There is the potential for state funding. The site can tap into a renewable energy source, which is extremely cheap as well as clean. Potentially a pipeline or conveyor can be used to get the ore to Nevada for processing. Transportation solutions that have an exceptionally low impact on the environment. BEST MOMENTS‘produce for 10 to 50 years 1.5 to 2 million pounds of uranium. ´‘Countries are recognising nuclear energy's benefits as we recognise renewables benefits.'‘Number 1 it´s (renewable energy) cost-effective. Number 2 it's clean, it's zero emissions.' In this episode, we chat with Trevor Jones is the CEO of Lynx Global Intelligence, a software provider, that is helping mining explorers and producers capture ESG data at the asset level. Trevor holds an MA in International Security from the University of Denver and sits on the Colorado Advisory Committee of the US Global Leadership Coalition and the Board of Directors for the Global Chamber Denver. His focus is on making complex global systems consumable through technology within the mining industry and talks to us about the company and how his technology will help mining companies with the ESG. Trevor is also going to be speaking at the upcoming Mines and Money event in London at the end of November so be sure to reach out to him there in person if you have any further questions or require any further information. KEY TAKEAWAYS Lynx Global Intelligence provides miners with tools on their phones and tablets that enable them to log ESG data, in live time, on-site. It is a bit different from what others in the market offer. Their software is used globally, and it tried and tested across numerous cultures and environments. It can be used to log all aspects of ESG, including wildlife, monitoring human rights and many other metrics. The reports and data are designed to be flexible, so they can be shared with all kinds of outside organisations and regulations. Quantifiable ESG metrics play a role in securing finances, and insurance and working more efficiently. ESG compliance and innovation are playing a crucial role in reducing friction and resistance to mining projects. BEST MOMENTS ‘Lynx helps miners aggregate ESG data at the site level. ´ ‘It even works without an internet connection… in some pretty austere places.' ‘if you talk to miners there is a genuine notion that we're going to try to figure this out as a community, not greenwash and be transparent.' In this episode, we chat with Zeff Reeves, MD of Tesoro Resources, who is an Australian publicly listed company with exploration-stage gold assets in Chile. It is in the process of carrying out a significant drilling program at its flagship El Zorro Project to identify and establish targetsZeff is a geologist and executive with over 20 years of experience in the resources sector who has significant management and operational experience in the gold and base metals sectors within Australia and overseas. He talks about the company and their flagship El Zorro Gold project and the progress they have made so far. He is also going to be speaking at the upcoming Mines and Money event in London at the end of November so be sure to meet up with him. See the offer in the Episode Resources section to get your ticket at a discounted rate.KEY TAKEAWAYS As a geologist, it is important not to have tunnel vision. Pigeonholing deposits prevent you from discovering other ores or minerals that may be present. Tesoro Resources is in control of over 600sq km of concessions, in Chile. Since 2017, they have drilled over 105,000 metres. Using a unique approach, they have uncovered a million-ounce-plus resource quickly. Being able to drill diamond cores early has played a significant role in their success. The few drill holes that have not resulted in finds taught them a huge amount. So far, they have identified 10 potential deposits. In Chile, both power and water can be an issue. But neither is a problem in the area Tesoro Resources operates in. There are plenty of very experienced miners available for work in Chile. BEST MOMENTS‘Myself and a couple of other guys have been really integral to delineation discovery design. ´‘They are able to directly sample those rocks and assess them for potential, for gold mineralization.'‘There's been some recent initiatives by the Chilean government to really reinvigorate foreign investment into Chile.'EPISODE RESOURCESWebsite: https://tesorogold.com.au/LinkedIn: https://iq.linkedin.com/company/tesoro-goldTwitter: https://twitter.com/TesoroGoldLtd“Resourcing Tomorrow” is Europe's largest and most in-depth mining conference dedicated to global sustainability goals and is coming to London this November. Every location has its own history, culture and community inherently marked by human experience. Luke Fuller reflects upon a notion of place which is forged through industrialization and our dependence on raw materials. Luke's work explores the complex layers of our society and infrastructure, in order to critique and understand the context in which we live. Using clay and other materials as a vehicle, Luke expresses his perceptions of landscape and the ambiguous relationship between humans and the natural environment. Luke manifests his thoughts and concerns through processes of construction and the physicality of making. Luke graduated from the Royal College of Art in 2020 (he was awarded the Charlotte Fraser Scholarship for outstanding work). Since he completed his BA at the University of Brighton in 2018, Luke has won a number of prestigious prizes and bursaries, including New Designer of the Year at the Business Design Centre, and the Nagoya University of Art Grand Prize. His work has been exhibited internationally, including at the British Ceramics Biennial, Masterpiece London, and FOG Design+Art in San Francisco.

Host James Dickson attended the AEV (Association of Event Venues) Conference at the Business Design Centre (BDC) last month, a fertile ground for podcast content. In these four rapid-fire Q&A sets, James talks to management from some key locations, north and south. We kick off with Kate Simpson, marketing and comms director at the BDC, together with Paddy Lynn, head of events management at P&J Live, a conference and events venue in Scotland. Both venues have served as vaccination centres and the focus here is, post ‘freedom day''/pre-Omicron, on getting the event needle back on the record - dealing with diaries, delays and postponements, managing turnarounds, the sanitising everything process, concessions from organisers, branding and beyond. Max Ball, executive director at the Business Design Centre, is in the second podcast with Sean Hinds, Manchester Central ‘s chief exec, and Simon Mill, chief commercial officer at Excel. Beyond the AEV 2021 success story, they discuss their lockdown learnings, the benefits of what has turned out to be a short return to live events and the pressure venues had to put on government to reopen beforehand. Up next, Alden Arnold, project manager for the Association of Event Venues, has a quick look at shorter lead times, the hunger for the original live return, collaborations and compromise, asset sharing, interaction and attentivity. This edition of the EIN podcast wraps with Lauren Hudson, health, safety and sustainability advisor at Manchester Central, and Siân Richards, who's in a similar role at Olympia London, talking sustainability and the pandemic impact on objectives and execution. They touch on the net zero roadmap, COP26, conscientious thinking, fielding questions from organisers and energy usage on the show floor.
How do you feel about virtual trade shows? 2020 has certainly changed the way the whole world works and does business, but if you are in the business of developing or sourcing products, how does that look for you? I can’t see that long haul buying trips will be happening in the way they used to. Far too risky that the whole team might end up quarantined for weeks after they get back, or worse still stuck somewhere and unable to get back. And what does this mean for trade shows, which have been one of the main ways that ranges were selected, new brands were discovered and suppliers were found? In this episode, I look at how trade shows are changing and how that might affect your business. More about our virtual trade show Make it British Live! Online 24th & 25th September 2020 The virtual version of the Make it British Live! trade show - connecting buyers and designers with UK manufacturers of fashion, textiles and homeware. Just like the real event, the virtual event will have all of the features of Make it British Live! plus more! This week’s podcast welcomed representatives from three of London’s most well-known event venues. Joining host James Dickson was Julia Galbraith, Marketing Manager for Exhibitions at ExCeL London, Kate Simpson, Head of Conference & Digital at London’s Business Design Centre, and Jazmin Beale, Head of Marketing & Communications at Olympia London. It goes without saying that every event needs to market itself properly. Without the correct exposure before, during, and after, an event will quite simply fail to succeed. The responsibility for marketing is placed heavily on the shoulders of professionals working directly for any given event, but on this week’s podcast the guests explore how a venues own marketing team can help to deliver great event experiences. Whether it’s offering unique local-knowledge, helping a client tap into nearby resources, or passing on the experiences gained from witnessing hundreds of other events, this week’s guests look at everything that venue marketing teams can offer and why organisers should be utilising them.

Investing should be a long-term activity. And when I say long-term, I mean 20, 30 or 40 years. Really, truly, long-term. Getting the asset allocation right, to meet your chosen investment goals, is crucial. But when investing for the long-term, it's also important to think about what the world might look like in the future and which investment themes are likely to perform well. What I share in this episode of the podcast is five different investment themes for the next decade and beyond. These are the long-term investment themes I've used in my own portfolio, over and above of course those strategic asset allocation decisions which drive the bulk of returns.
