In this episode of Grow Sessions, Tony Pavlakis sits down with Jim Megerson of Anvil Agrinomics about the complexities of designing efficient indoor cannabis cultivation facilities. Titled “Connecting Your Cannabis Grow: Easy Efficiency with Integrated Systems,” the episode emphasizes the critical need for system integration over siloed approaches. Early collaboration between architects and engineers is spotlighted as essential to avoiding costly structural and operational issues. They dive into key design considerations—like balancing upfront costs with long-term returns, adopting effective building automation systems, and tackling the integration of environmental controls (such as lighting and fertigation) from the start. The discussion also explores the value of consistent data tracking for smart operational decisions and the importance of a well-defined business plan that drives infrastructure needs, rather than forcing operations into existing building limitations.Strategic planning and integrated design are essential for the future of efficient indoor cultivation. Tune in now to gain practical insights from this must-hear episode.About Jim Megerson, Anvil ArgninomicsWith over 40 years of experience in the design and construction of building systems, Jim Megerson leads Anvil Agrinomics while keeping current with issues of building systems design, including indoor controlled environments for agriculture, energy efficiency standards and green building practices. During college, Jim completed a sheet metal worker apprenticeship program where he gained invaluable knowledge in the fabrication and installation of sheet metal products, HVAC equipment and associated hardware for large commercial, material handling and clean room applications. This combines world class engineering knowledge along with hands-on, tool belt wearing experience to balancing design, construction cost, operations & maintenance to achieve the best return on the owner's HVACD investment.Jim participates on multiple National Committees including the NCIAs' Facility committee and ASHRAEs' MTG on controlled environments for agriculture. He regularly speaks on these topics at national conferences.Anvil Agrinomics has completed MEP design on over 40 cannabis cultivation and manufacturing spaces and over 20 dispensaries in 20 different states. This combines to approximately 1.8 million sqft of cannabis industry facilities. If you have questions, you can reach Jim at jmeg@anvil-ag.com.Please visit www.anvil-ag.com to learn more about Anvil Agrinomics. Thanks for listening. An integrated systems approach to transport with Sue Kershaw

In this podcast  we talk about transforming UK transport by “adopting an integrated systems approach”.So what does that mean in practice? Well despite multiple local and national investment programmes over decades, the UK still seems to lack transport infrastructure that is capable of providing reliable and predictable journey times. We certainly have a multitude of available modes – cars, trains, aircraft, buses, trams, taxis, bikes etc. But we consistently seem to lack the ability to join these up to create seemly, efficient, cost effective door to door journeys. As a result the car dominates our transport – providing a personalised service for those that can afford it but at a growing social and environmental cost to us all. It is my pleasure therefore, to welcome Sue Kershaw, to the Infrastructure Podcast today to discuss the concept of a new integrated system approach to transport. Sue is managing director for transportation at contractor Costain and has spent a career working to create better transport systems. More importantly, she recently, as a Fellow of the Institution of Civil Engineers and President of the Association for Project Management, she has been championing the concept of an integrated systems approach to transport strategy.ResourcesA Systems Approach to Infrastructure Delivery Institution of Civil EngineersAssociation for Project ManagementCrossrail Learning Legacy

As Cabinet is busy approving the Just Transition Framework for publication, the Presidential Climate Commission (PCC) has unpacked a key part of what the framework will be premised on – Climate Resilience Development Pathways (CRDPs). PCC commissioner Makoma Lekalakala says South Africa's Just Transition can only be realised if CRDPs are at its core, while PCC secretariat Chrispian Olver states the CRDP approach is vital for implementing the Just Transition Framework. The PCC was tasked to design a Just Transition Framework for South Africa, as a first building block towards realising a coordinated and coherent approach to just transition planning in South Africa. Olver says CRDPs, in the South African government's view, involve a deeply consultative process, particularly with people who have the most to lose in an energy transition, including workers in the coal value chain, women and the poorest of the poor. The PCC has since its establishment as an advisory body to government in December 2020 embarked on pilot projects in Saldanha Bay and eThekwini to understand and determine ways of making the energy transition equitable, while ensuring a climate-resilient future. The commission has looked at other pathway frameworks and international applications as a starting point for its work, and assessed the capacities needed to this end in South Africa. It also consulted with international experts developing and using CRDP approaches. CRDP is focused on enabling decision-makers to systemically take into account the projected impacts of climate change on strategic infrastructure development, planning and management, alongside other traditional development criteria. It helps to manage the trade-offs between multiple sectors involved in a particular project and selects the most climate-resilient development method. The PCC will further draft proposals for taking this work forward into various operating spaces. University of Cape Town African Climate and Development Institute research fellow Anna Taylor explains that the CRDP follows an integrated consideration of the various systems that make up the country and the various outcomes that are dependent on the decisions made today. The United Nations' Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) deems these systems to be land, ocean, coastal and freshwater ecosystems; urban, rural and infrastructure; energy; industry; and society. South Africa has taken a similar view. The IPCC regularly investigates the conceptual and empirical advances being made on CRDPs. IPCC co-chairperson and South African climate scientist Debra Roberts says limiting global warming to 1.5 ˚C above preindustrial levels is expected to substantially reduce damages to African economies and ecosystems. She believes that governance for climate resilient development includes long-term planning, all-of-government approaches, transboundary cooperation and benefit-sharing, development pathways that increase adaptation and mitigation, and Nationally Determined Contribution implementation. “Ecosystem-based adaptation in African cities has huge potential, particularly in fast-growing small- and medium-sized cities. This type of holistic thinking is centred on equity and justice, and avoids quick fixes without deeper reflection on nature or societal needs,” she states. She adds that cross-sectoral or “nexus” approaches, as encompassed in CRDPs, such as water-energy-food or climate-ecosystems-human health can deliver multiple benefits and avoid maladaptation to climate change. Roberts says that, while limiting climate damages may not do much to realise economic growth in every region, it will ensure that fewer millions of people in Africa are pushed into extreme poverty owing to climate change and negative health and livelihood impacts. She explains that even though African countries are among those that contribute least to greenhouse-gas emissions globally, there are already widespread losses and damages being experienced...

Michael Zakkour Part 2 | Amazon Laid Bare, How Integrated Systems Helped Chinese eCommerce Rebound, and Thriving by Focusing on the Three "C's"

The Negotiation

Today on The Negotiation, Michael Zakkour returns to discuss the impact of COVID-19 on the state of retail in China and the rest of the world.Setting the context for the discussion, Michael says that it is not a question of which retailers are doing well, but which integrated systems are. One of the factors that held China together during the worst of the crisis was the “ecosystems for retail, commerce, and communication that Alibaba, JD, Tencent, Pinduoduo, and Kaola had built.” These ecosystems reliably put products into the hands of consumers regardless of distance and are made even more seamless via technologies such as contactless delivery.Michael warns that the tail end of the COVID-19 crisis will only hasten the demise of those companies who are “just hanging on”, along with physical retail in general. Specifically, malls and department stores were already in decline before the outbreak—their future does not look any better. The eCommerce landscape, on the other hand, will experience both positive and negative developments. “The difference between eCommerce, digital commerce, and the New Retail,” says Michael, “is that, in the New Retail, physical retail actually matters.” The clicks will not spell the demise of the bricks. Rather, the key is in how a brand will integrate their physical and digital presence. To stay in the race, digital should directly influence physical. Some consumer behaviors in China have been permanently altered. Ecommerce solutions will obviously be on the rise. A “stay-at-home culture” will also emerge as more people realize how efficiently they can continue to live and work in the comfort of their own living spaces, solely using the power of the internet.Even as lockdowns around the world are lifted, the way we do business will be completely different in the new normal. In order to thrive in this upcoming reality, brands will be wise to “rethink how they make, move, sell, and buy” by reevaluating their business model from the perspective of four different Cs: consumer-centricity, customization, convenience, and contribution.

The History of Computing
The History Of Novell

The History of Computing

Welcome to the History of Computing Podcast, where we explore the history of information technology. Because by understanding the past, we're able to be prepared for the innovations of the future! Todays episode is on the history of Novell. To understand Novell, we'll go to BYU in 1980. As an honors grad in math and computer science, Drew Major might have been listening to the new wave tunes of Blondie or Deve who released Call Me and Whip it respectively that year. But it's more likely he was playing with the Rubik's Cube or Pac-Man, released that year or tuned in to find out Who Shot JR? On Dallas. He probably joined the rest of the world in mourning the loss of John Lennon who was murdered in 1980. He went to work at Eyring Research Institute (ERI) where he, Dale Neibaur and Kyle Powell decided to take some of their work from BYU and started working on the IPX and SPX network protocols and the NetWare operating system using the company name SuperSet Software. Meanwhile, George Canova, Darin Field, and Jack Davis had started a company called Novell a couple of years before, building microcomputers, or the equivalent of the PCs we use today. They weren't doing so well and Novell Data Systems decided they might be able to sell more computers by hooking them up together - so they hired the SuperSet team to help. The team Superset had worked on ARPANET projects while at the Eyring Research Institute The bankers stepped in and Jack Davis left, then Canova - and Raymond Noorda stepped in as CEO in 1982. In 1983 they released Novell NetWare. NetWare had the first real Network Operating System called ShareNet, which was based on a license to a Unix kernel they bought. While initially based on the Xerox Network System developed at Xerox PARC, they created Internetwork Packet Exchange, or IPX, and Sequenced Packet Exchange, or SPX, creating standards that would become common in most businesses in the subsequent decades. They joined Novell in 1983 and Major later became Chief Scientist. The 1980s were good to Novell. They released Netware 2 in 1986, becoming independent of the hardware and more modular. Servers could be connected through ARCNET, Ethernet, and Token Ring. They added fault tolerance options to remap bad blocks, added RAID support, and used a key card inserted in the ISA bus to license the software. And they immediately started working on Netware 3, which wouldn't be complete until 1990, with 3.11 setting the standard in network file sharing and when I first worked with Netware. Netware 3 was easier to install. It was 32-bit, allowed volumes up to a terabyte, and I remember this being cool at the time, you could add volume segments on the fly while the volume was mounted. Although growing the volume was always… in need of checking backups first. They didn't worry a lot about the GUI. Dealers didn't mind that. HP, DEC, and Data General all licensed OEM versions of the software. This was also my first experience with clustering, as NetWare SFT-III allowed a mirror an a different machine. All of this led to patents and the founding of new concepts that would, whether intentionally or accidentally, be copied by other vendors over the coming years. They grew, they sold hardware, like otherwise expensive ethernet cards, at cost to grab market share, and they had a lot of dealers who were loyal, in part due to great margins they had been earning but also because Netware wasn't simple to run and so required support contracts with those dealers. By 1990, most businesses used Novell if they needed to network computers. And NetWare 3.x seemed to cement that. They worked with larger and larger customers, becoming the Enterprise standard. Once upon a time, no one ever got fired for buying Netware. But Microsoft had been growing into the powerhouse standard of the day. They opened discussions to merge with Novell but Ray Noorda, then CEO, soon discovered that Bill Gates was working behind his back, a common theme of the era. This is when Novell got aggressive, likely realizing Microsoft was about to eat their lunch. Novell then bought Digital Research in 1991, with a version of DOS called DR DOS, and working with Apple on a project to bring Novell to Mac OS. They bought Univel to get their own Unix for UnixWare, and wrote Novell Directory Services which would later become eDirectory to establish a directory services play. They bought WordPerfect and Quattro Pro, early Office-type tools. By the end of this brisk acquisition time, the company didn't look like they did just a few years earlier. Microsoft had released Windows NT 3.1 Advanced Server in 1993 as the hate-spat between Noorda and Gates intensified. Noorda supported the first FTC antitrust investigations against Microsoft. It didn't work. Noorda was replaced by Robert Frankenberg in 1994. And then Windows 95 was released. Novell ended up selling Novell DOS to Caldera, handing over part of the Unix assets to Santa Cruz Operation, selling Integrated Systems, scrapping the Embedded Systems technology they'd been working on, and even selling WordPerfect and Quattro Pro too Corel. Windows of course supported Netware servers in addition to their own offering, having moved to NT 4 in 1996. NT 4 server would become the de facto standard in businesses. Frankenberg didn't last long and Eric Schmidt was hired as CEO in 1997. NetWare 5 was released in 1998 and I can still remember building zap packages to remove IPX/SPX in favor of TCP/IP. But the company was alienating the channel by squeezing margin out of them while simultaneously losing the war in the small business then the larger businesses to Microsoft, who kept making Windows Server better, and by 1999 I was trading my CNA (or Certified Novell Administrator) out for my first MCSE. After seeing the turnaround at IBM, Novell bought a consulting firm called Cambridge Technology Partners in 2001, replacing Schmidt with their CEO, Jack Messmen - and moving their corporate headquarters to Massachusetts. Drew Major finally left that year. The advancements he's overseen at Novell are legendary and resulted in technology research and patents that rival any other team in the industry. But the suits had a new idea. They pivoted to Linux, buying Ximian and SuSE in 2003, releasing Suse Linux Enterprise Server and then Novell Linux Desktop in 2004 and finally Open Enterprise Server in 2005. Does all of this seem like a rudderless ship? Yes, they wanted to pivot to Linux and compete with Microsoft, but they'd been through this before. Stop slapping yourself… Microsoft finally settled the competition by buying them off. They gave Novell $348 Million dollars in 2006 for “patent cooperation” and then spent $6M more on Novell products than Novell spent on theirs over the next 5 years (keep in mind that technology spats are multi-front wars). Novell was acquired by Attachmate for $2.2 billion dollars. Because Novell engineers had been creating so much amazing technology all those years, 882 patents from Novell went to CPTN Holdings, a consortium of companies that included Apple, EMC, Microsoft, and Oracle - this consortium the likely architect of the whole deal. SUSE was spun off, Attachmate laid off a lot of the workforce, Attachmate was bought, much word salad was said. You can't go back in time and do things over. But if he could, I bet Noorda would go back in time and do the deal with Bill Gates instead of going to war. Think about that next time someone goes low. Don't let your emotions get the best of you. You're above that. This has been The History of Novell. Thank you for listening we hope you have a great day!

If payment inequities can be addressed, communication and technology tools in place in large physician multispecialty groups make them ideal candidates for a medical neighborhood, suggests Terry McGeeney, MD, MBA, director of BDC Advisors. Dr. McGeeney, who spent 13 years of his practice career in a large multispecialty group, has also seen some FQHCs and managed Medicaid programs that do a good job of linking community and social supports required in medical neighborhoods. As for engaging patients in this emerging integrated care delivery system, try explaining the medical neighborhood's value proposition for them, he suggests. Patients already get why the integrated approach is good for physicians and insurance companies but need to hear why they should buy in to team care, patient portals and other aspects of centralized care coordination. Dr. McGeeney shared his expertise in developing medical home neighborhoods during a November 20, 2013 webinar, "Medical Home Neighborhoods: Uplinking Specialists To Create Integrated Systems of Care."
