Ep. 138 - Assessing the impact of tariffs on US banks

Street Talk

Play Episode Listen Later Apr 28, 2025 25:48

The emergence of tariffs led to a broad selloff of US banks amid fears of slower economic growth or even a possible recession. Banks' first-quarter earnings season showed strong performance before the onset of tariffs, but ultimately might have left investors with more questions than answers. In the episode, senior reporter Harry Terris shared the key takeaways from large banks' first-quarter results and highlighted commentary from JPMorgan, Bank of America, Capital One, First Citizens and others. The results show a noticeable divide between "hard" data, such as consumer spending strength, and "soft" data, like stock market volatility and economic forecasts. Despite the uncertainties, major banks have largely maintained their financial guidance. However, they have adjusted loan growth expectations downward due to a more cautious approach from clients, reflecting a "wait and see" attitude amid the current economic climate. Bank news lead Lauren Seay further discussed how tariffs are expected to negatively impact M&A activity, but also notes that the trade policies have not completely stymied bank deals, with large transactions like Columbia Bank's plans to purchase Pacific Premier surfacing since tariffs were announced.

As an ECP portfolio company and Certified B Corporation, Pivot Energy seeks to leverage its renewable expertise to deliver innovative solutions that help businesses and communities achieve meaningful decarbonization. Happy birthday Sean Carpenter! Below is the Zoom recap of the episode today and it's way better than anything I'd ever write. I guess it helps to actually listen to the episode, who knew? Peroni and Potatoes: A Lively ConversationDoug and Strickland had a lively conversation about beer, with a focus on Peroni, an Italian beer that Strickland initially struggled to identify due to its brightness on camera. Doug defended Peroni as a real beer, noting its alcohol content and Italian origin. They also discussed the pricing of beer, with Strickland humorously identifying Peroni as a 'fancy beer' due to its price. Additionally, they discussed the origins and preparation of food, specifically mashed potatoes and granola. Doug shared his realization that mashed potatoes do not come from a box but from real potatoes and expressed his appreciation for making his own granola. Strickland agreed that homemade mashed potatoes are delicious and not as time-consuming as expected. The conversation ended with some reminiscing about past meetings and plans for a potential practice run to Las Vegas.Unexpected Departure and Thanksgiving PlansDoug and Strickland discussed Doug's mother's situation with her boyfriend, who unexpectedly decided to leave, leaving Doug puzzled given his mother's affection for him. Strickland suggested that there might be additional context Doug's mother hadn't shared, and they contemplated potential reasons for the boyfriend's departure. Doug concluded that the boyfriend might have felt constrained by his lifestyle, despite Doug's mother's contentment with it. They also talked about a possible Thanksgiving gathering in California, but were undecided due to Doug's mother's uncertain attendance. Furthermore, they reminisced about past experiences in Las Vegas, with Doug recounting a previous crowded Thanksgiving visit.RV Living, Hotel Costs, and Presidential PoliticsDoug shared his experiences living in an RV, discussing the challenges and costs associated with the lifestyle. He compared the RV experience with hotel stays, with both Strickland and Doug agreeing on the cost- effectiveness of hotels. They also discussed their upcoming trip to the SEMA show in Las Vegas, where they planned to stay at the Westgate hotel due to its proximity to the convention center. Doug expressed concerns about RfK Jr.'s speaking style, which might affect his ability to support him as a presidential candidate.Voting System: Limitations and ChangeStrickland and Doug discussed the limitations of the American voting system, with topics ranging from charismatic candidates to the influence of money in politics. Strickland lamented the low voter turnout and the sway of charismatic personalities, while Doug raised concerns about the viability of an independent candidate. They also discussed the challenges of effecting change in government, particularly in the face of powerful entities like Pfizer, Blackrock, and Lockheed Martin. Both acknowledged the difficulty of initiating change when the House and Senate are not aligned with the figurehead in office. They also discussed the potential benefits of a third party, but expressed skeptic Reach The Nice Guys Here: Doug- @DJDoug Strickland- @NiceGuyonBiz Nice Important Links: Subscribe to the Podcast website: Niceguysonbusiness.com Book Doug and/or Strick as a speaker at your upcoming event. Alex had a lot of ground to cover from the weekend, so let's get started. Here's the rundown:The global stock market is mixed today, if leaning positive. Some concerns about global banks appear to be settling. In contrast, things are quiet on the crypto front.Salesforce is getting a reprieve from certain activist pressure after it took a cleaver to its staffing. The Silicon Valley Bank crisis is slowly coming to a close. TechCrunch has the latest on the sale of the former startup-friendly bank's commercial banking operations. In other tech news: France is cracking down on TikTok and other social apps, and some of Twitter's source code made its way onto GitHub.Finally, Turo is doing fine and could, ahem, drive us toward a reopening of the IPO market. Maybe more unicorns than we thought are going to be ok?How about we have a relaxed week? That would be nice. Something slow and calm to end the quarter? We deserve it, after all!For episode transcripts and more, head to Equity's Simplecast website. Equity drops at 7 a.m. PT every Monday, Wednesday and Friday, so subscribe to us on Apple Podcasts, Overcast, Spotifyand all the casts. Thanks for reading Minimum Competence! Subscribe for free to receive new posts and support our work.First Citizens BancShares Inc. has agreed to acquire Silicon Valley Bank after the bank was seized by regulators following a run on the lender. The deal will see First Citizens take on all deposits and loans, including $72 billion SVB assets at a discount of $16.5 billion. The Federal Deposit Insurance Corp will retain $90 billion in securities and other assets for disposition, and also received equity appreciation rights in First Citizens worth up to $500 million. The estimated cost of the failure to the Deposit Insurance Fund is about $20 billion. Silicon Valley Bank collapsed earlier this month, becoming the largest US lender to fail in more than a decade, after taking a huge loss on sales of its securities amid rising interest rates. First Citizens was the winning bidder after the FDIC received “substantial interest” from multiple potential acquirers.First Citizens Buys Silicon Valley Bank After Run on Lender (3)Utah has introduced social media laws for minors that are expected to face legal challenges from the technology and advertising industry. The two measures seek to give parents more control over their children's access to platforms such as Snapchat and Instagram and to protect minors from advertising and addictive features. Under the new laws, Utah has regulatory enforcement power and residents can sue companies that violate their rights. However, technology and advertising industry groups, such as NetChoice and the Computer & Communications Industry Association, have raised concerns that the legislation may violate First Amendment free speech rights. The Association of National Advertisers has also raised concerns about the First Amendment over S.B. 152, which prohibits advertising on teens' social media accounts. Attempts to filter content by age have been previously struck down by the US Supreme Court. The laws infringe on the First Amendment by preventing users from browsing or posting anonymously and by restricting access to certain content based on age, NetChoice argued in a letter to Utah Governor Spencer Cox.Utah's Teen Social Media Laws Brace for Suits Seeking to Ax ThemTesla is facing a jury trial to determine how much money the company must pay a former Black factory worker who won a lawsuit accusing the electric car maker of allowing severe racial harassment at its Fremont, California assembly plant. The worker, Owen Diaz, was subjected to harassment, including racial slurs and racist caricatures, and a jury awarded him $7 million for emotional distress and $130 million in punitive damages. However, a federal judge lowered the total award to $15 million, which Diaz rejected, opting for a new trial on damages. Tesla faces similar but much broader claims of allowing racist conduct in a proposed class action by Black workers and a separate lawsuit by a California civil rights agency. The company has denied wrongdoing and called the agency's lawsuit politically motivated. Tesla is also fighting a spate of sexual harassment lawsuits by female workers at the Fremont plant and another factory near Los Angeles, as well as complaints filed with the US Department of Labor last year accusing the company of wage theft and worker safety violations at its $1.1 billion truck factory in Austin, Texas. The company is appealing a US labor board's decision that said the company illegally barred workers at the Fremont plant from wearing shirts bearing union insignia. Elon Musk has stated that minorities should be "thick-skinned" and accept apologies from coworkers who insult them, but Tesla has said it does not tolerate discrimination, takes complaints by workers seriously, and disciplines employees who violate anti-bias policies. In addition to the ongoing racial discrimination lawsuit against Tesla filed by California's Civil Rights Department (CRD), a recent ruling requires the agency to provide Tesla with details of their investigation into the automaker's Fremont factory prior to filing the lawsuit. Tesla had previously argued that the CRD didn't follow proper protocol in its investigation, and the details could provide Tesla with a chance to narrow the scope of the lawsuit. This ruling could also impact Tesla's countersuit against the CRD, in which the automaker alleges that the agency did not notify them of claims of racial discrimination or give them a chance to settle outside of court. Multiple lawsuits alleging discrimination and sexual harassment at Tesla's factories are pending in California courts.Explainer: Tesla's legal troubles: race bias trial is tip of the icebergCalifornia agency must provide Tesla with details of racial bias investigationLawyers for Fox News and Dominion Voting Systems have argued over the high bar to prove defamation in a $1.6 billion lawsuit that is scheduled to start next month. Dominion claims that Fox allowed allies of former President Donald Trump to falsely claim that Dominion's machines and software were responsible for Trump's election loss. Fox contends that it cannot be held liable for defamation for simply reporting on newsworthy allegations, a sitting president's claim that the election was being stolen from him. Dominion attorneys say Fox employees allowed guests to falsely claim that the company had rigged the election, flipped large numbers of votes from Trump to Joe Biden through a secret algorithm, was owned by a company founded in Venezuela to rig elections for Chavez, and offered bribes or kickbacks to government officials who used its machines. Fox attorneys argue that the key issue is not whether the allegations were true or false, but whether it was accurately reporting the allegations. The case also holds the potential for redefining libel law in the US.Fox, Dominion argue over legal standards to prove defamation Get full access to Minimum Competence - Daily Legal News Podcast at www.minimumcomp.com/subscribe

Silicon Valley Bank's deposits are now in the hands of First Citizens Bank, as are the collapsed financial firm's 17 branches across the US. The purchase by First Citizens comes just two weeks after a run on SVB was caused by a viral crisis of confidence, and worsened by the bank's own inability to adapt to the Federal Reserve's higher interest rates. North Carolina-based First Citizens purchased 72 billion dollars of SVB's deposits for a 16 billion dollar discount, while another 90 billion will remain with federal banking insurance authorities for the time being. Recent turmoil in the US financial sector has shaved billions off the share value in bank stocks, and even caused a rally in bitcoin prices. #FirstCitizensBank #SiliconValleyBank #FED
