This week my guest is chef Christine Van Bloem. For 15 years Christine ran the successful Kitchen Studio Cooking School in Frederick, Maryland, a recreational cooking school. When the Covid pandemic hit, she had to stop doing in-person cooking classes. She pivoted to online cooking classes, hoping to go back to in-person. Then, her husband had a stroke, she had a heart attack, and the landlord of her business evicted her. That's enough for most people to throw in the towel. Christine took some time away from the kitchen, but now she's back. On the show, we discuss her new venture The Empty Nest Kitchen. She'll talk about what her cooking class model looks like today. Today we discussed something that could go really well or disastrously wrong depending on the day and age of your kids. It is the worst when our kids behave badly out in public. We hope to help you avoid this embarrassing situation with a few tips we put together for you. Also just know that every parent has been there. Even if they are giving you the evil eye they have themselves done the walk of shame with their own kids. No one is immune.Taking the kids out to eat isn't something either of our families do very often. So our experience is somewhat limited. We have discovered, though, that a bit of planning can go a long way in getting to have an enjoyable evening. The other thing we did in the episode is to come up with a few money saving tips to help the money go a little farther on nights out. Our biggest tip was don't go out very often. It is easy to save money eating at home. Sometimes you're stuck and have to have a night out because of other obligations. Knowing a few money saving tips can make it a little easier.Have you heard our episode about Cooking With Kids. Listen to that HEREWe would love to hear your tips and tricks for going out to eat with the kids. Leave us a comment under this episode on any of our social media accounts.Music is by Oliver Massa. Listen to Cooking with Kids. The Good. The Bad. The Ugly HERE.Want to make a big mess and not get a whole lot accomplished? Get your kids in the kitchen to ‘help out.' Just kidding. Letting your kids help in the kitchen isn't very helpful at the beginning but so awesome once they get a little older.Today we discussed the days at the very beginning when all they can do was stir. We got into what we did when we first cooking with our kids. Then we offered a little encouragement to those whose kids are in the making messes stage. If you can stick with it, your kids will eventually be able to make whole meals without your help. This is so helpful for busy moms who just need to put something on the table.Lastly we talked a bit about our first days of being young wives and adult cooks. Even though we both spent years helping our own mother in the kitchen, we both had much to learn once we started our own homes. We've both learned a lot since then.Want to hear a little about how we keep busy all winter? Check out our teaser episode HERE. We definitely have more time for cooking with the kids in the winter.Do your kids help in the kitchen? Admit it. That vision that you have of baking with your children doesn't always pan out. Instead of creating powerful memories, it's often just a mess. So this week Jane and Liz are asking and answering whether the pros of cooking with kids really outweigh the cons–and how you can make cooking with your kids a pleasure this holiday season.

Do you want to be able to cook with confidence with your kids? Bri Grajkowski of BriGeeski is sharing the solution so that you can get the skills you need to make delicious meals your whole family will love. "When they were interested, I followed their lead, and when they were ready to cook, that's the best time to cook with them." Bri Grajkowski is a mother of two who blogs about family fun activities, everyday recipes and travel. She is also a creative director and helps other companies with their design and marketing. She didn't have any training or background in culinary but learned to cook when she had kids. This is Bri Grajkowski's story... Bri Grajkowski is a mother, blogger, and creative director who recently published a cookbook called Cooking with Kids. She didn't have any training or background in culinary arts, but learned to cook when she had kids of her own. After the pandemic, she reached out to one publisher and they agreed to publish a cookbook with her children's cooking recipes. In her cookbook, Bri suggests different recipes that can help broaden a kid's palate. She suggests introducing new foods and micro portioning for kids. It's tough with little friends around too because kids gravitate to what their friends are doing and they don't want to follow suit. According to the cookbook, making a list of dinners and putting them into categories is a good way to break up the routine of meals In this episode, you will learn the following: 1. How Bri Grajkowski learned to cook when she had kids 2. What recipes are included in Bri's cookbook 3. In this episode host, Will Heckman and guest Katie Kimball are talking about cooking as a stress reliever. Specifically cooking with our kids. Making a home-cooked meal is a great way to make sure that our families are getting the proper nutrients and nourishment we need. But what might not be as obvious is that cooking (or baking) can also be an effective way to relieve stress. It's an opportunity to be creative, stimulate the brain, and, if we involve them, connect with our kids. stress.org

When the pandemic first hit the U.S. last March, and we found ourselves working and learning from home and had a lot more time on our hands, many of us made our way to the kitchen to bake sourdough bread and sweet treats and make homemade meals from scratch. Many of us also brought our kids into the kitchen to teach them how to cook, to spend quality time together, and to bond. In fact, according to Guelph Family Health Study, 50% of parents involved their kids in cooking more often during the pandemic. While cooking can often feel like a chore, or something you don't have time for, cooking with your kids is one of the best ways to get them out of their picky eating habits, encourage them to eat their vegetables, and become healthy, adventurous eaters. Although it may be messy, it doesn't have to be time-consuming or stressful and you can use it as an opportunity to teach a life skill, spark creativity and build a stronger relationship with your kids. In this episode, I'm talking with Katie Kimball, founder of KitchenStewarship.com and the Kids Cook Real Food ecourse about where the idea of “kid-friendly food” and kids menus came from, the many benefits of cooking with kids, and why it's more important than ever that we do. Plus, Katie serves up easy, practical tips to teach your kids how to cook—and even make dinner on their own. Season #2 starts in June and new episodes post on Tuesday. The Messy Intersection: Pregnancy, Motherhood and Feeding Our Kids
In this episode of The Messy Intersection, we hear from Kristy Del Coro, a dietitian, mom and professionally trained chef. Kristy and I chat about the benefits and many (many!) challenges of cooking with kids. We explore how cooking with our kids can become increasingly more challenging as our kids get older and share some practical tips for getting started. We also chat a bit about how messages about the benefits of cooking with kids can be one more thing to add to the guilt-inducing list of things that parents never get around to and how to move past that concept and enjoy quality time with your kids in the kitchen in whatever way feels right to you. What's your take on cooking with kids? For tips on getting started (or for a safe space to express your frustrations about it!) join The Messy Intersection Facebook Community to share your experience and meet a community of other moms navigating life in the messy intersection just like you. You can also text Diana your feedback on the show anytime at 405-407-MESS (text HELLO for a link to the Facebook group).

In this episode of The Honest Hour, I chat with YouTuber & child-focused healthy food enthusiast, Beans Van Zyl. I first came across Beans on Instagram in early 2019 and was attracted to her gourmet-looking but oh-so-easy to make healthy meals and sweet treats. Not only does Beans share the most beautiful content, videos and images of making her own recipes, but she has a way of including her kids in on the action so that it is fun, educational and an amazing opportunity to bond. Before becoming a Mom, Beans studied to be a foundation phase teacher and opened her own successful baking business. As I said in our chat, her journey is a true example of the wisdom Steve Jobs so aptly imparted upon us years ago, “you can't connect the dots looking forward you can only connect them looking backwards.” This was absolutely true for Beans. Who would know that the unique value of her combined love for baking, early childhood development and health would born her brand Coco Bean Cooks? In our chat, we discuss everything “health, cooking and motherhood,” from early led weaning to her own worries about health to her early years of being a picky eater herself and more. Beans believes in healthy and wholesome living and that it centres on balance and joy. She believes in including the kids in on the fun, in teaching them through applicable learning and tangible action, and in taking our health in to our own hands with researching the facts ourselves. Chatting with Beans encouraged me to be more inclusive of my kids on making healthy dishes in the kitchen and encouraging their natural curiosity when it comes to food and our bodies. If you are a Mom on a personal health journey and you want to know how to raise your kids with food confidence, this episode is for you. It does not have to be hard, it can be a journey of fun together and, if anything, and opportunity to learn and grow well on the inside and out, right in your own home. Happy listening! We start off this episode with Stuff to Do. An idea is to include your kids when you are cooking. They love to help and be involved. We then answer an email with a listener asking about what to do when bringing kids to a restaurant. We then dive into SuperCharge where we discuss www.dadgear.com. We then introduce a clip from Dr. Ellen Kreidman who discusses how having a loving relationship with your spouse is the best gift you can give your kids. This means you have to make the effort to spend time together. We also discuss Dr. Ellen's date night formula for a successful relationship. As per her advice, the homework is to go out on date with your significant other. Get dressed up, plan it, and make it special. We then close the episode with a quote that also confirms how important the relationship of the parents is and how the kids see that. If you want them to be in a healthy relationship, you must model that behavior.
