Welcome to the Lost Artists of Fairhaven Podcast Series hosted by Scott Bishop! The series focuses on the artists who once lived, worked, or were born in Fairhaven, Massachusetts. The town was and continues to be called home to many now-historical artists who were forgotten or unsung in their day. This focused series of podcast episodes presented by The Artists Index brings you informative conversations with historians, family members, friends, or acquaintances who once contributed to Fairhaven as Visual, Performing, Literary, or Culinary Artists as well as the supporters, and cultural impresarios of this remarkable corner of the South Coast's creative community. Scott speaks with The Millicent Library's director, Kyle DeCicco Carey * about Lillian Allen Dexter. She was born in New Bedford, Massachusetts, on August 29, 1871.  She graduated from New Bedford High School in 1889. From there, she then went on to study at the Cooper Union School in New York City, where she earned a certificate in Pen and Ink Illustration from the school's Women's Art Department in 1893. During the 1890s, Dexter traveled to various locations between Massachusetts, New York, and West Virginia visiting, parks and Civil War battlefields, where she sketched flowers and other botanicals. In the late 1890s, she lived in Washington, D.C., with her uncle, the clerk of the US Senate Finance Committee. While there she worked for the American Rose Company, creating commercial art. After leaving Washington, Dexter settled in Marion, Massachusetts where she remained until her passing on July 13, 1928. The Millicent Library archival collections include many of her watercolors and pen-and-ink drawings. If you have any further knowledge, memories, or documentation on this artist, please contact us! His work aims to inspire gratitude and optimism about the future. Stefan is an Austrian graphic designer based in New York City, where he founded Sagmeister Inc. in 1993. He has created iconic designs for artists like Lou Reed, OK Go, The Rolling Stones, David Byrne, Jay Z, Aerosmith, Talking Heads, Brian Eno, and Pat Metheny, and worked with clients including HBO, the Guggenheim Museum, and Time Warner. I talked with Shigeru Ban about disaster relief projects, emergency architecture and paper as a building material. Shigeru Ban is a Japanese, Pritzker-winning architect with world-wide experience and recognition. He was born in Tokyo and after studying architecture in Los Angeles and in Cooper Union School in New York, he opened his office in Tokyo, then in Paris and New York. He has designed projects worldwide from private houses, exhibitions, pavilions to offices or large scale museums. He is known for his innovative work with paper as a building material, particularly recycled cardboard tubes used to quickly and efficiently accommodate disaster victims. Societal contribution and humanitarian work is a big part of his profession. His ideas for cheap, flexible, easy to build, durable and safe shelters keep helping the refugees and victims of natural disasters around the world. He has established the NGO Voluntary Architects' Network (VAN) to start disaster relief activities, providing assistance in Turkey, India, Sri Lanka, China, Italy, Haiti, Japan, Ukraine and many more. In this conversation I'm asking him: What are the most crucial aspects when it comes to designing an emergency shelter? What is the main purpose of disaster relief projects? What are the advantages of using paper or cardboard tubes as a building material? How do you perceive temporary and permanence in architecture? What is the goal of Voluntary Architects' Network? How did the Paper Partition System help Ukrainian refugees? Is the contribution to society the biggest value the architect can give? Direct answers, rigid conclusions and a very humble and clear work approach. Enjoy the podcast! Artist Scooter LaForge is a delight. To be honest, I somehow felt like connecting with him on this show was healing for me-now who's the shrink!? Scooter's work is amazing and so instinctual- he cannot not do it. Even though he's worked with big names like he is as humble as can be. So much to learn from his perspective—growing up as a gay man in a tiny town in Arizona. I have to say I was envious hearing of all the free-range outdoor time he had, but alas the town, it's sounds really small and devoid of gays which means a pretty homogenous group of people (boring!) Scooter is the best of what an artist is—someone fueled by their work and satisfied because of it. He complimented me a lot, so I'm going to give him an A as a guest rating. Follow and learn more about Scooter HERE: https://www.scooter-laforge.com/ Instagram @scooterlaforge @scooter_laforge_a_life_of_art/ BIO: Scooter Laforge began his love affair with art at a very young age while growing up in the small town of Las Cruces, New Mexico. His burning desire to render things beautifully began with his singer/songwriter mother, and his landscape painting father; both equally inspired his creativity and lust for art. Laforge's work can be characterized as Pop Art partnered with abstract expressionism and Dutch classicism. His paintings and drawings are portraitures, landscapes, and objective subject matter, utilizing his special painting techniques and incorporating his homoerotic, in your face, non-apologetic lifestyle.  Like Golden Books on acid, his work employs a 50's illustrated storybook technique, modernized by 70's color palettes and are influenced heavily by gay pornography, cute fluffy animals, and sometimes iconic cartoons (i.e. SpongeBob Square Pants, The Cookie Monster, and Popeye and Brutis) which are reoccurring characters and themes within his work.  LaForge earned his BFA from the University of Arizona in 1993,[5] and began his career as a painter in San Francisco.[6] He moved to New York City in 2001,[3] where he attended the Cooper Union School of Art under a fellowship.[8] His art is in the collections of the Leslie-Lohman Museum of Art[9] and Beth Rudin DeWoody.[10] LaForge has a line of hand-painted, unique clothing items that are sold through fashion stylist Patricia Field.[11] He has twice collaborated with Belgian fashion designer Walter Van Beirendonck.[12][13] His clothing has been worn by Susanne Bartsch,[14] Sandra Bernhard,[15] Beyoncé,[8] Miley Cyrus,[6] Boy George,[3] Debbie Harry,[8] Nicki Minaj,[3] Madonna,[8] Iggy Pop,[3] Rihanna,[6] and Lil Wayne.[3]

Raised in a strict family in Florida with a father who opposed her artistic pursuits, she arrived in New York with just $4.60, and in 1922 enrolled at The Cooper Union School of Art. Coming to the fore in the 1920s, Savage mastered emotionally tender and stoic life-size figures and plaster portrait busts (painted with shoe polish for a bronzed effect), and her subjects ranged from dignified everyday Black figures to influential Harlemites, including W. E. B. Du Bois. Working with images to elevate Black culture into mainstream America, Savage was also a key community organiser, exhibitor and teacher to so many. Not only did she become the first African American woman in the US to open her own private art gallery, she was also appointed the first director of the Harlem Community Art Center. As confirmed by Jeffreen, who has previously said: “I don't think about Augusta Savage as someone who only made objects … [but rather as someone who] has really left behind a blueprint of what it means to be an artist that centres humanity.” ENJOY! The Dior Common Thread podcast series represents a fascinating new avenue for exploring the collaborations initiated by Kim Jones since his arrival at Dior. Each episode will present a compelling encounter with one of the inspiring figures who have participated in his endlessly original reinventions. In conversation with Ed Tang, each recounts their unique experience and shares their singular vision, providing an immersive new window into the world of Dior men.     Creative daring drives the House's momentum today more than ever, and the Dior Common Thread podcast series explores the collaborations initiated by Kim Jones. For his Summer 2020 fashion show, the Artistic Director of the Dior men's collections invited the artist Daniel Arsham to create scenography featuring fascinating and seemingly disintegrating monolithic sculptures spelling out the word "D.I.O.R". These were later also reproduced for sale in a scaled-down, limited-edition version. A true “archaeologist of the future”, the New York-based Arsham has built his work at the intersection of disciplines, initiating captivating dialogues between architecture and design, history and contemporary art. In this episode of Common Thread, Ed Tang talks to Arsham about working with Dior, his practice, his collaborations and the myriad aspects of his creative life.     Daniel Arsham was born in Cleveland, Ohio, in 1980, and grew up in Miami, Florida. He won a scholarship to Cooper Union School of Art in New York and was awarded the Gelman Trust Fellowship in 2003. Straight out of art school, Arsham opened an exhibition space called The House in Miami, where he met the Parisian art dealer Emmanuel Perrotin, who has represented him ever since. Continuing this rapid trajectory, he was invited to collaborate with the legendary choreographer Merce Cunningham on stage designs in 2005 and has worked in this vein fairly continuously since. He founded the architecture collaboration Snarkitecture with Alex Mustonen in 2007, and in 2014 established a film company, Films for the Future.     Arsham has worked with numerous fashion and design brands in multiple design and creative capacities, and his work has been exhibited at PS1 and The New Museum in New York, the Contemporary Art Museum Miami, the Athens Biennial, and the Carré d'Art de Nîmes in France, among many others.     Today, Ed Tang and Daniel Arsham get right to the crux of his practice, talking in detail about the wide frames of reference and expansive source material in his worldview and creative output. As an artist who views all his multidisciplinary endeavors as part of his overarching framework of creation, he thinks laterally about the world we live in and the future of creativity, and how it relates to the future of our planet. An avid collector, a trait he shares with Kim Jones, he views his collecting as an extension of his continuous education and understanding of objects and form.   Arsham talks about his ideas around evolution and how he maintained his practice and indeed his working rhythm during lockdown, producing work with his children, preserving his connection to his studio and the life within it. He also delves into the world of painting and his return to this fundamental medium which was his introduction to image making in his art school days. The installation of large-scale canvases has been an enormous challenge, even in this biggest gallery spaces, but it is a challenge which this ultimate Renaissance man cannot but overcome.

May grew up in Chicago and graduated from the Cooper Union School of Art in New York City. Her work plays a critical role on the dominant discourses towards the community, the fantasy of the cultural “Other,” and how contemporary art appropriated social imaginaries, bringing them to a diluted universal conception of art. I spoke with May while she was finishing up a residency at Bunker Projects in Pittsburgh a few months ago, the city I used to live in. We ended up discussing third-culture kids, Zombie Formalism, Thai horror films, mukbang, ASMR videos, and so much more. As usual, stay safe, stay healthy, and I hope you enjoy this.
