Welcome to Season 5 Episode 11 of Art Is… a podcast for artists. Isotta, your host, is excited to kick off this episode with a personal reflection on the journey undertaken in Season 5. It's been a season filled with growth, collaboration, and exploration of new ideas, and Isotta will be sharing some thoughts on these developments. One of the central themes explored in this episode is the concept of being "self-referential." This idea was introduced to Isotta by Daniel Arsham during his keynote commencement address at Cooper Union in 2020. Arsham emphasized the importance of trusting oneself and one's creative vision in the long term, encouraging the drawing upon past ideas and references to create consistency and flow in one's work. Central to this idea is patience, allowing ideas to marinate for years even before coming to fruition in physical form.Isotta and Lauryn, co-hosts of Art Is..., took Arsham's message to heart and extended this idea into Season 5. They've been referencing past interviews and episodes through clips in each episode, embracing an evergreen mindset. This approach ensures that their work continues to serve the emerging art community, providing lasting impact. In this vein, Lauryn also shares a clip from her previous interview with multidisciplinary creative, Kia Warren, where they discuss her experiences working in various creative fields and meeting famous artists at the Surf Lodge. Kia's journey challenges the narrative of being a "jack of all trades and master of none" while providing a thoughtful perspective into the career of a cross genre multi-hyphenate creative.Isotta and Lauryn then delve into their thoughts on the clips from Kia's interview and Arsham's keynote, breaking down some common narratives about creativity and the art world. To wrap things up, Lauryn takes the audience on a brief journey to the TASCHEN Beverly Hills store, where Season 5 of Art Is... was recorded. She shares insights about one of her favorite books from the store, tying it all together with their ongoing exploration of the art world and the creative industries.Whether you're an artist or an art enthusiast, this episode is bound to spark your creativity and expand your creative horizons. Thanks for tuning in to Art Is... a podcast for artists!Topics covered: Personal reflective note from Isotta on the making of season 5 and the developments in her practice since the beginning of the season including thoughts on segmentation, collaboration and opening yourself to new ideas The notion of being “self referential” which was introduced to Isotta by Daniel Arsham in his keynote commencement address for Cooper Union in 2020 Arsham's discussion on the importance of trusting yourself, and your creative vision in the long term, and allowing yourself to draw upon past ideas and references to create consistency and flow in your work Patience and practice, experiences and reflections on thisThe rationale of Season 5 explained: why Isotta nd Lauryn chose to include clips of past interviews and episodes through cThe idea of the evergreen mindset, creating lasting impactful work that will continue to serve the emerging art communityLauryn shares a clip from her previous interview with multidisciplinary creative Kia WarrenKia shares about her time at surf lodge meeting famous artists Kia's experience doing many different creative types of work, managing multiple interests and passions - pushing back on the “jack of all trades and master of none” narrativeIsotta and Lauryn share their thoughts on the Warren clip and Arsham keynote and do some narrative busting Lauryn shares about one of her favorite books in the TASCHEN Beverly Hills store, the location where Season 5 of the Art Is… podcast was recorded Resources Mentioned: Isotta's Art Newsletter: https://isotta.beehiiv.com/subscribe Daniel Arsham Cooper Union Commencement Address Keynote: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kvLgSp6UBoMKia Warren https://www.instagram.com/kiaifaniwarren/?hl=en The Surf Lodge https://www.thesurflodge.com/musicThomas Laird TASCHEN Book ‘Murals of Tibet' https://www.taschen.com/en/limited-editions/art/02617/thomas-laird-murals-of-tibetCurated Splash Resources https://www.curatedsplash.com/blog TASCHEN Publishing https://www.taschen.com/en/ Learn more about our partner ART MO: https://artmo.com/Follow along @artmo__Article about Isotta, Art Is… & ARTMO https://artmo.com/buzz/artmo-introduces-its-new-partner-art-is-podcast Learn more and read transcripts at https://www.artispodcast.com/Follow the podcast at @artispodcastLearn more about Isotta at @isottapage and see her work http://www.isottapage.com/Learn more about Lauryn @curatedsplash and her work https://www.curatedsplash.com/Original music by Black Wonder TwinsFollow them @blackwondertwinsDonate to the podcast https://app.redcircle.com/shows/375bbc0d-c052-4330-b73b-aad1ba5ed2d9/sponsorSupport this podcast at — https://redcircle.com/art-is/donations
Ending Season 2 of CarStories, Daniel Valdez and Patrick Thomas sat down with contemporary artist Daniel Arsham to talk cars, Cleveland Cavaliers, Formula 1 and his current exhibition "Arsham Auto Motive" at the Petersen Automotive Museum. Daniel Arsham is known for his “eroded” works that occupy a space where the concepts of yesterday, today, and tomorrow collide, representing a fictional archaeology wherein objects from our cultural and material present are unearthed at some point in the distant future. These casts of modern artifacts are created from geological materials such as sand, quartz, and selenite, appearing fossilized as if they have just been discovered after being buried for ages. Through the sculptures displayed in Arsham Auto Motive, the artist historicizes the automobile—a paragon of the modern era—and its related symbols, presenting the viewer with a glimpse of future history.
Reviewers Karen Krizanovich and David Benedict give their verdicts on Tammy Faye, A New Musical at the Almeida Theatre in London, starring Katie Brayben, and from the combined creative forces of Elton John, Jake Shears, James Graham, and Rupert Goold. Plus they review Paul Newman, The Extraordinary Life Of An Ordinary Man - a memoir of the film star created from recently rediscovered transcripts of conversations Newman had in the 1980s. The Poet Laureate, Simon Armitage, reads his poem to mark 100 years of the BBC. And the American artist Daniel Arsham is known for sculptures which look like archaeological remains or as he describes them “future relics.” As an outdoor exhibition of his work opens at the Yorkshire Sculpture Park, Luke Jones finds out what inspires his work. A trailblazer at the INTERSECTION OF THE WORLDS of art, fashion, sports, and music, to name a few - DANIEL ARSHAM makes moves that shake the very foundation, push the perceptions of, and bridge the gaps within pop culture. From growing up in MIAMI to the steady beat of THE NOTORIOUS B.I.G., in 1994 - the height of the hip hop moment, to later moving to New York City and launching a hyper successful art career, ARSHAM has premiered as many show openings as he has had creative titles. Being named the first ever creative director in the NBA for the Cleveland CAVALEIRS, Arsham' core identity is unfazed by trends, but lives at the zeitgeist of THE NOW. He's always working, but when he's in his studio there's never a moment without music. Reminiscing on being a kid enthralled by A TRIBE CALLED QUEST, his propensity for visual STIMULATION, ACUITY, and MEMORY runs deep. An artist through and through, he recalls unpeeling the plastic and revealing the handpainted green, black and red colors of MIDNIGHT MARAUDERS. ARMAN and ARSHAM spend the afternoon in LONDON, overlooking the city and diving into everything from the impact and INGENUITY VIRGIL ABLOH inspired in everyone around him, to ARSHAMS own future ambitions. This week Jonathan speaks with Arsham Parsi, an Iranian LGBT human rights activist living in exile in Canada. Arsham discusses when he first realized he was gay and what it was like growing up in Iran knowing he was different. Arsham discusses the consequences of being gay in Iran, fleeing the country and how his family had to flee soon after. He also discusses his relationship with his family, what his life has looked like since he had to flee Iran, and all of the work he does to help others like him.******About Arsham Parsi Arsham Parsi is an Iranian queer rights activist who was born in Shiraz, the largest city in the Islamic Republic of Iran.He is the founder and head of the Iranian Railroad for Queer Refugees an international non-profit organization based in Toronto, Canada that is helping Iranian queers and those who escaped Iran on the basis of their sexual orientation, gender identity and expression. He is currently living in exile in Canada, but whilst still living in Iran in 2001 he started Rangin Kamin (Rainbow Group), a group for LGBTQ Iranians which he later renamed Persian Gay and Lesbian Organization, and then again as the Iranian Queer Organization (IRQO). Because homosexuality is illegal in Iran and can be punished with death, Parsi registered the organization in Norway and kept most of his LGBTQ activism to online spaces, where he operated a chatroom for queer Iranians.Parsi himself fled to Turkey in 2005, claimed refugee status, and was eventually resettled in Toronto, where he founded a new organization, the International Railroad for Queer Refugees (IRQR).The organization assists LGBTQ refugees who have fled their home countries because of their identities and are currently living in Turkey. The organization provides food, shelter, guidance, and education until they are eventually resettled. His work has earned him several human rights awards including the 2008 Felipa de Souza Award from the International Gay and Lesbian Human Rights Commission and the 2008 Pride Toronto Award. His 2015 book, Exiled for Love: The Journer of an Iranian Queer Activist, chronicles Parsi's incredible journey from his first understanding of his sexual orientation to his eventual exile. It explores the reality for LGBT people in Iran through his personal experiences.

The Dior Common Thread podcast series represents a fascinating new avenue for exploring the collaborations initiated by Kim Jones since his arrival at Dior. Each episode will present a compelling encounter with one of the inspiring figures who have participated in his endlessly original reinventions. In conversation with Ed Tang, each recounts their unique experience and shares their singular vision, providing an immersive new window into the world of Dior men. Creative daring drives the House's momentum today more than ever, and the Dior Common Thread podcast series explores the collaborations initiated by Kim Jones. For his Summer 2020 fashion show, the Artistic Director of the Dior men's collections invited the artist Daniel Arsham to create scenography featuring fascinating and seemingly disintegrating monolithic sculptures spelling out the word "D.I.O.R". These were later also reproduced for sale in a scaled-down, limited-edition version. A true “archaeologist of the future”, the New York-based Arsham has built his work at the intersection of disciplines, initiating captivating dialogues between architecture and design, history and contemporary art. In this episode of Common Thread, Ed Tang talks to Arsham about working with Dior, his practice, his collaborations and the myriad aspects of his creative life. Daniel Arsham was born in Cleveland, Ohio, in 1980, and grew up in Miami, Florida. He won a scholarship to Cooper Union School of Art in New York and was awarded the Gelman Trust Fellowship in 2003. Straight out of art school, Arsham opened an exhibition space called The House in Miami, where he met the Parisian art dealer Emmanuel Perrotin, who has represented him ever since. Continuing this rapid trajectory, he was invited to collaborate with the legendary choreographer Merce Cunningham on stage designs in 2005 and has worked in this vein fairly continuously since. He founded the architecture collaboration Snarkitecture with Alex Mustonen in 2007, and in 2014 established a film company, Films for the Future. Arsham has worked with numerous fashion and design brands in multiple design and creative capacities, and his work has been exhibited at PS1 and The New Museum in New York, the Contemporary Art Museum Miami, the Athens Biennial, and the Carré d'Art de Nîmes in France, among many others. Today, Ed Tang and Daniel Arsham get right to the crux of his practice, talking in detail about the wide frames of reference and expansive source material in his worldview and creative output. As an artist who views all his multidisciplinary endeavors as part of his overarching framework of creation, he thinks laterally about the world we live in and the future of creativity, and how it relates to the future of our planet. An avid collector, a trait he shares with Kim Jones, he views his collecting as an extension of his continuous education and understanding of objects and form. Arsham talks about his ideas around evolution and how he maintained his practice and indeed his working rhythm during lockdown, producing work with his children, preserving his connection to his studio and the life within it. He also delves into the world of painting and his return to this fundamental medium which was his introduction to image making in his art school days. The installation of large-scale canvases has been an enormous challenge, even in this biggest gallery spaces, but it is a challenge which this ultimate Renaissance man cannot but overcome.
Daniel Arsham is a contemporary American visual artist who works across art, architecture, and performance. His work has been shown in museums and institutions worldwide, including MoMA PS1 and the New Museum, New York among others. In 2021 he was appointed Chief Brand Officer, helping to craft a universal NFT minting solution that better protects creators and collectors. And will be releasing a new collection on Nifty Gateway, “Eroding and Reforming Digital Sculptures: Cars”. For more than a decade, Jeff Gluck has been at the forefront of contemporary IP law in the fields of art and fashion, helping artists, designers, and content creators protect their livelihoods without the excessive costs of antiquated law firms. Operating with a team of seasoned intellectual property litigators, he has recovered millions for infringement victims and has successfully resolved several landmark artists' rights cases. Now he is leading the team at CXIP to bring protection and verification to all artists in Web3.

This week’s My Mission Is… podcast guest is Arsham Parsi, an Iranian human rights activist. As a gay teenager who lost lost a transgender friend to suicide, Arsham felt compelled to create an underground digital LGBTQ network in the country. Due to the strict laws against homosexuality in Iran, Arsham was then forced to flee to Canada. Since escaping persecution, he has dedicated his life to educating and helping others who face a similar fate. In 2008 he founded The International Railroad for Queer Refugees, which provides information, aid, and training to refugees awaiting emigration. He is also a founding member and CEO of the Marjan Foundation, a non-profit organization based in Toronto that educates people on HIV/AIDS and other STIs, and supports LGBTQ refugees with their newfound freedoms in Canada. He helped raise more than $1 million CAD in 18 months, all while working as a law clerk to support himself and his continuing passion for activism. This week, Arsham talks with Mission founder and editor-in-chief Karina Givargisoff about the persecution of LGBTQ refugees around the world, the challenges facing non-profit organizations, as well as the personal struggles he encounters in directing the International Railroad for Queer Refugees and the Marjan Foundation. On this episode host Jian DeLeon speaks with architect and artist Daniel Arsham. You might know him through his crystallized Pokémon sculptures commemorating the 25th anniversary of the franchise, his collaborations with Dior, Rimowa, and Uniqlo, or any of his Future Relics — eroded plaster sculptures that resemble everyday objects ravaged by the sands of time. Just in time for Lunar New Year, Arsham and Archive Editions partner with K11 MUSEA to take on one of the occasion's most prominent artifacts: The Red Packet. Representing thousands of years of Asian history, the practice of giving out red packets dates back as early as the Han Dynasty, where coin-filled envelopes were thought to wards off evil spirits and bring good fortune. That makes it the ideal object for Arsham to put his stamp on. Let's check in with Daniel Arsham in his Brooklyn, New York studio.

When he was just 12 years old, Daniel Arsham had a near-death experience. Living in Florida with his parents, Hurricane Andrew struck in 1992, careening across the coastal state and taking with it Arsham's family house—ripping the roof off, tearing the walls apart at the seams, and sending pink fluffy insulation flying. The house was rebuilt soon after, but the traumatic experience and ensuing weeks of living in a "pre-civilization" state left an indelible imprint on Arsham. The idea of collapsing the past and present, and the formative role architecture played in his understanding of the world, has helped shape Arsham's creative practice, which he describes as fictional archaeology. In his most celebrated series, "Future Relics," Arsham casts objects of commercialism and contemporary society as fragments of an already obsolete time. Along with Alex Mustonen, Arsham founded the irreverently titled group Snarkitechture, and began collaborating with fashion brands like Dior (working with both Hedi Slimane and Kim Jones), KITH, and Adidas, as well as Merce Cunningham and illustrator Hajime Sorayama. Having successfully skated across the boundaries that define genres of art, Arsham's newest gig as creative director of his hometown basketball team, the Cleveland Cavaliers, signaled his supremacy in pop culture. On this week's episode of the Art Angle, Arsham called in from his New York studio to discuss his unlikely story, and what comes next.
Tune in to Episode 33 of the PA Talks series with Daniel Arsham, an American artist who combines art, architecture, and performance. Arsham was just 12 when Hurricane Andrew destroyed his home which continues to be a theme in his works. After graduating from The Cooper Union in New York City with full scholarship, Arsham started an exhibition called ‘'The House'' with his artist friends and later co-founded Snarkitecture with fellow architect Alex Mustonen in 2008. Snarkitecture is a multidisciplinary collaborative design practice established to investigate the boundaries between the disciplines of art and architecture. The practice focuses on the reinterpretation of everyday materials and structures using installations, architectural environments, and objects for a diverse range of clients such as Calvin Klein, COS, Kith, and more. His debut series, Future Relic, consists of nine short films that depict a future civilization before and after Earth undergoes major ecological changes. Arsham's work has been shown at PS1 (New York); The Museum of Contemporary Art (Miami) and The New Museum (New York). In this episode Daniel discussed about his works in sculpture, architecture, drawing, and films. I hope you enjoy the podcast. Daniel Arsham has taken the art, fashion, and architecture scene by storm in the past few years, breaking through the clutter with his awesome collaborations with big name brands like Porsche, KITH, and Adidas. Arsham’s love for design and unique style has brought him into the forefront of the modern art world, showcasing his pieces all over the world. Eli and Sam speak in depth with Arsham about his inspirations, his love of cars, his early life, and his vision for his art.
Thank you for listening! In this episode, Mike and Aaron are in the studio. Le Mans wasn’t what we hoped it would be for us. The concept 411 is a crazy mix from both ends of the spectrum of past and future. An artist collaboration with Porsche and a few other friends created a beautiful 930 Turbo. We are super close to opening up the registration for next year.
In this episode of Echo, join Paul and Arsham as they talk to Daphne Shen, who's currently working at the LiDAR startup Baraja as the Chief of Staff to the CTO! They'll be discussing her study and work experience, delving into her past venture V-KAIWA, as well as chatting about her current role at Baraja! Music by Octopus Orange
Daniel Arsham straddles the line between art, architecture, and performance. He makes architecture do things that it’s not supposed to. From casting contemporary objects in volcanic ash as if found on some future archaeological site to collaborating with Merce Cunningham, Robert Wilson, and Pharrell Williams to founding Snarkitecture, Arsham brings experimentation, historical inquiry, playfulness, and wit to everything he does. He and Zuckerman discuss the dislocation of time, geological forms of growth, allowing for chance, the relationship between collaboration and expanding audience, and doing things that are hard!

Daniel Arsham is a prolific artist who blurs the lines between art, architecture and fashion. From creating eroded casts of contemporary objects to designing dystopian future spaces under his architecture firm, Snarkitecture, Arsham is renowned for his relentless experimentation of shape and form across diverse genres of work. His artistic worldview is what separates him from his fellow contemporaries, ushering an indefinable world filled with Future Relics that blend the past, present and future. Straddling this concept of complex futurism is what has transformed Daniel Arsham into one of today’s most influential, interdisciplinary artists. In recent years, he's collaborated with KITH, Dior, Porsche, COS, Pokémon and many more brands, further pushing his work into a complex and multi-dimensional space where his art has reached audiences worldwide. In this episode, we dive into the mind of this complex artist and discover Arsham's central theme recurring through his artwork—the ethos of being able to float in time. He also discusses his three entities: Snarkitecture, Editions and his art production studio and how more than just being an artist, Arsham is a full on business man, operating many hats. Mario Guzman, the mastermind behind the cannabis brand SHERBINSKIS, calls in for this week’s episode of ‘The Dropcast’ to speak with hosts Jian DeLeon and Noah Thomas about his business from its roots up to the present day and being dubbed “the Supreme of Marijuana.” As people are gearing up for that time of the year, Mario also shares smart ways to go about selecting your options. The quick hits begin by revisiting an event from earlier in the week as the cast pay their respects to Chynna Rogers, an up-and-coming rapper who passed away at the young age of 25. Then, things go even further back to last season when BEAMS came out with Crocs that were meant to be a part of a capsule collection with Highsnobiety. The Japanese label is back with new military-inspired sandals that the cast is all for (3:56). Another possible return is the Nike SB Dunk Low “Buck” from 2003 which could be returning later this year (5:20). The sneaker’s University of Oregon colorway happens to be the same green and gold that reps Jian’s alma mater, making it an automatic cop. Contemporary artist Daniel Arsham recently announced his newest project, a Uniqlo capsule in collaboration with Pokémon (6:48). As the first visual artist to be granted access to Pokémon’s archive, Arsham’s work is proving that the animated franchise continues to thrive. However, the current times are rough for young fashion designers, and LVMH recognizes that. Mario, Jian, and Noah support the group’s decision to cancel this year’s LVMH prize in order to set up a fund that supports previous winners (9:17). NBA has put a contingency plan in place which includes individual and team training for players before the season resumes (11:02). The cast comes up with novel but not impossible ideas for alternative strategies as they suggest players to battle it out, gladiator style. The fashion industry is also fighting tooth and nail to stay on top during the Covid-19 pandemic, with a new study positing that consumers will start to reach for heritage rather than hype products (15:28). Mario speaks on running his business successfully during the current crisis as well as the necessary traits for a lasting business (17:20). As Mario shares, SHERBINSKIS is the new kid on the block, but his philosophy represents the future for many new brands. He takes it back to the beginning when he was growing out of his garage in the early 2000s while being involved in the legalization movement, and the compassion shown towards veterans, disabled individuals, and the sick during that time in San Francisco (21:18). To put things into perspective, Mario reflects on progressing from worrying about getting shut down on a daily basis into being classified as an essential business. This episode’s Question of the Week (QOTW) asked Dropcast listeners to dig through their memories to the first time they smoked weed (28:07). Callers share the good and the bad, and Mario joins in with anecdotes of his first joint at the age of 11. In “What’d You Cop?” Mario treated himself to a Mercedes-Benz S-Class 560 but also did his share of giving through donations (35:38). This weekend, catch up on new episodes of ‘Vibe Check,’ Highsnobiety’s latest podcast which recently featured A$AP Ferg dropping his quarantine playlist and workout routine, and make sure to tune in to new episodes released every Tuesday and Thursday. Screening of Daniel Arsham’s “Future Relic 03” starring Juliette Lewis, based on the notion of how today's realism will effect, be perceived and preserved in the future.
Fine artist and designer, Daniel Arsham, grew up in Miami in the mirror image of the house across the street. After graduating from the Cooper Union, back in Miami he co-founded the artist-run gallery space ‘The House’. An invitation to collaborate with the Merce Cunningham Dance Company led to global adventures in stage design, and in 2007, in order to expand his explorations of spatial manipulation, he formed Snarkitecture, a multidisciplinary design practice with partner Alex Mustonen. “Looking back at it, it feels like I’m jumping around a lot, but all of the different types of work, whether it’s an installation or in the architecture studio that I have, they’re all in service of the same goal—which is to take our everyday experience, things that we know, and, sort of, make them do things or make them act in ways we don’t expect. And that subtle shift outside of our everyday experience is a kind of invitation to explore that region outside of our everyday.” A rack of sixteen Spalding basketballs—except they’re made of pink selenite crystal with gaping erosions in their forms. A Los Angeles Lakers bomber jacket with logo stitching across the front—except it’s unwearable, made of pyrite and ash, the crystals emerging from erosions on the shoulder and sides. What appears to be the hydrostone likenesses of Mickey Mouse, Winnie the Pooh, and Big Bird hanging out together, but they’re wrapped in cloth and tied with rope, ready for delivery or perhaps for unwrapping—immediately familiar and uncomfortably unfamiliar at the same time. Issues of National Geographic, Vogue, Life Magazine, and Sports Illustrated from the year 3018—the year that, apparently, the Cleveland Browns win the Super Bowl. Since I’ve started making work it always feels like whatever idea I’m delving into in the present is the last good idea. Art is all about people’s expectations. Some artists represent the world as it is, and some artists have a goal of manipulating that representation. Daniel Arsham aims to do just that with his futuristic artwork, which ranges from large scale architectural pieces, to castings made of ash, to paintings, and more. I recently discovered Daniel’s art through my friend Usher, and he does some truly amazing work. He has shown his work all around the world at places like the MoMA PS1 and the Museum of Contemporary Art in Miami. Daniel has begun using his art for social justice, which I think is really awesome. He also created the architecture firm Snarkitecture, as well as a film production company called Film the Future. In my conversation with Daniel we talk about how he started his own exhibition space to catalyze his career, how he started making money with his art, and what his experimentation process is like. Listen in to hear more about his use of lucid dreaming, the effects of his colorblindness on his art, and the power of social media for artists. I’ve always liked a feeling in my work that it can float in time.
