By his early 20s, Todd Graves knew exactly what he wanted to do—open a restaurant near Louisiana State University that would make four things better than anyone else: chicken fingers, crinkle-cut fries, Texas toast, and coleslaw. After he and his partner Craig Silvey got rejected from every bank in Baton Rouge, Todd set out to fund his dream by working two treacherous jobs; first at an oil refinery and then on an Alaskan fishing boat. With roughly $150,000, he remodeled an old bike shop and opened his first restaurant in 1996. As word spread, Todd began building more restaurants, fueling the expansion on a rickety system of loans, and dreaming of making Cane's as ubiquitous as McDonald's. Over the years, he has retained ownership of the business and watched it grow to over 600 stores, with 3 billion dollars in sales projected this year. This episode was produced by Liz Metzger, with music by Ramtin Arablouei. Chair: Rick Morton In an interview with The Guardian, author Craig Silvey admitted his favourite object is a mandolin – absolutely not to be confused with his passion for the ukulele – and expressed his regret over the lost breakthrough memoir he wrote at the age of 10. With Rick Morton, Silvey explains a writing career that includes a fascination with small Australian towns, the acts of courage that inspire him and why empathy matters. Event details: Tue 07 Mar, 1:15pm on the West Stage
Chair: Sarah Ayoub In Runt, Craig Silvey has written a book for the whole family – and for all the dog lovers out there! A touching and heart-warming tale in the tradition of Charlotte's Web and Babe, Silvey's book centres on the relationship between a stray dog with a special talent and his adopted owner. In conversation with Sarah Ayoub, Silvey gives an insight into the impetus for this “hilarious tale of kindness, friendship, hurdles, hoops, tunnels, see-saws, being yourself and bringing out the best in others". Event details: Sun 05 Mar, 3:00pm in the Torres Tent
Thanks to a suggestion from listener Toni, Brenna and Joe check out Craig Silvey's celebrated 2009 book Jasper Jones, as well as Indigenous filmmaker Rachel Perkins's 2017 adaptation. We both really like the book, which is long and takes awhile to get into, but offers a complicated analysis of racism and class in a small Australian town. The film is still good, but too much has been cut out to do the book justice, particularly Toni Collette's Ruth, whose motivations no longer make sense.Wanna connect with the show? Craig Silvey takes us on a delightful journey of identity and friendship as Annie and her stray dog take on the world in 'Runt'. Petronella McGovern has linked many issues such as teenage activism, toxic masculinity, female ambition and whales into ‘The Liars', part crime novel part history book but all round very good read.

In a special series direct from the Margaret River Readers and Writers Festival, Irma chats with Craig Silvey about the author school visit as a child that changed his life, the careful considerations around writing characters from marginalised communities, why he thinks writing to word counts is unhelpful, how writing is like an illness, the hardest manuscript he had to abandon, and the most frightening library display of his book.

After the blockbuster success of Jasper Jones, Craig Silvey's highly anticipated new novel is Honeybee. Chronicling the coming of age of its transgender narrator, Sam, the story opens with Sam and another despairing soul standing on an overpass ready to end it all. Sam and Vic save each other and their tentative friendship gives them their first reason to live. Equal parts heartbreaking and heartwarming, Honeybee is a deeply empathetic novel of identity, vulnerability and masculinity. Chaired by Yves Rees

Yesterday, the Golden Globes nominations were released and it’s a firm… no. From everyone. But one piece of commentary that’s emerged is begging us to stop "hate binging" shows like Emily in Paris. Are these nominations entirely our fault? And how do we feel about award shows without the glitz and glam of the red carpet, how relevant are they in a post-covid context? Plus, Emily Vernem joins us to talk about Dating Burnout. There isn't really a space in society for single people who go through the loss of almost-relationships, but sometimes they can hurt just as much as full-blown breakups. And, our best & worst of the week, including a Premier, sewage, dogs and birthdays. THE END BITS Recommendations: Jessie wants you to read Honeybee, by Craig Silvey. Welcome to episode 17 Honeybee by Craig Silvey. The book was inspired by a real situation witnessed by the author’s brother and sister-in-law and in this episode, we discuss the author’s endeavour to portray his characters’ anguish and vulnerability in a way that is both sensitive and heartwarming. We are delighted to be bringing you this episode in Trans Awareness week and hope that you loved the book as much as we did. In our discussion, we refer to Sam as he/him. This is incorrect and we apologise for our mistake. Since Sam identifies as female, it is considered more respectful to use she/her. Take Home Reading is a new short-form audio series for readers and writers – shining a spotlight on Australian writers with recently released books. In each instalment, you'll be introduced to a writer, learn a little about what they've been reading lately, and hear a short reading from their latest work. In this episode we're talking to Craig Silvey about his novel Honeybee, a tender coming-of-age story about a transgender teenager called Sam, a chance encounter she has with a man called Vic, and the ways in which both lives are changed by their unlikely friendship. ‘For readers of all levels of sophistication, [dialogue] is the element of a novel that no one passes over. Everybody reads dialogue. It's so revealing of a character and it's the best way for us to understand characters – when they speak purely to us. It's a way to make them feel distinct and unique, and a way to have a text feel dynamic because we're shifting away from that narrative voice and we're introducing different tones and different rhythms. It's a vital piece of the puzzle… and something I've always delighted in'. Honeybee is out now through Allen & Unwin.Support the Wheeler Centre: https://www.wheelercentre.com/support-us/donateSee omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
