Producer Norm Coyne, founding partner of the Northern FanCon pop culture event, joins the show to discuss his comedic alien invasion-meets-comic con short film ‘Conquest' — now being adapted into a feature film. Conquest is the result of a mentorship program with Northern FanCon. For the past few years now, FanCon has received support from the film industry catalyst Creative BC for workshops and panels. These guests are of quality pedigree - Writer's Guild award winners, Emmy award winners, Golden Globe award winners. During the course of the 3 days of FanCon, they deliver masterclasses in their respective fields behind the camera. This initiative was designed to foster interest in film industry development and establish Prince George as a shooting location for productions. Relationships made in the Creative Corner have led to 4 feature films shot in Prince George in the last two years. In 2 of these films, Prince George portrayed itself garnering a great deal of benefit for local tourism efforts. This past May, the Creative Corner levelled up by actually shooting our short film Conquest at Northern FanCon with the film industry experts of the Creative Corner partnered with local less experienced counterparts in a unique mentorship activation. _______________________________________________________________ Talking Strange Paranormal Podcast with Aaron Sagers is a weekly paranormal pop culture show featuring celebrity and author interviews, as well as learned experts in all things strange and unexplained. The year is 2156. A young archivist, Phe, has just discovered a digital time capsule dating back to 2020, the year of the first of the Great Pandemics. The Apocrypha Chronicles is a groundbreaking sci-fi / documentary podcast that transcends the pandemic, using the frame of a speculative fictional drama to present reflections from contemporary artists. The podcast was created by Peabody award-winning veterans of Canadian public radio, along with opera and new music composers, theatre-makers, Indigenous storytellers, and other artists across the spectrum of today's performing arts scene. The Apocrypha Chronicles creates a conversation between our uncertain digital present and a more hopeful organic future. Rhona Rees always brings the funny: as an on-camera actress; as a voice performer; as a screenwriter. She's been in the business for more than two decades, getting her start at the age of 11 in a film with Australian screen legend Ernie Dingo. These days, she acts in screen and animation projects like Polly Pocket, Wu Assassins, and Ninjago: Masters of Spinjitsu, and she was nominated for a 2018 Leo Award and a 2019 Society of Voice Arts and Sciences Award for Littlest Pet Shop: A World of Our Own, for her work as Beverly "Bev" Gilturtle. Rhona is also the face and star of Shuttlecock, a sports mockumentary in which she played a washed-up badminton player whose Olympic dreams are dashed when her rival smashes a shuttlecock into one of her eyes – and Freya, a dark comedy set in a near-distant future. Rhona wrote the script for Freya, which received funding from Creative BC and the venerable Harold Greenberg Fund. In this hilarious and at times emotional interview, the Australian ex-pat (who – true story – becomes a Canadian citizen during our sponsor break) talks about child stardom, what she learned shouting “cock!” in crowded theatres across North America, filming Freya, and how Canadians can help the humans and animals affected by the Australian bushfires. The Pacific Screenwriting Program (PSP) is pleased to announce Writer/Producer/Director Robert Cooper as Showrunner for the 2020 Scripted Series Lab. Cooper will be a mentor to six up-and-coming BC-based screenwriters selected to participate in next year’s program starting in January 2020. With Cooper leading the story room, they will work together to develop his original series in the PSP’s flagship training program now in its second year. Combining real-world story room experience, mentorship, boot camps, workshops and information sessions, the program equips writers with the skills, experience and connections necessary to establish a sustainable career in the province’s dynamic screen industry. The Pacific Screenwriting Program is a collaboration between Netflix, CMPA, the Writer’s Guild of Canada and Creative BC. “We are tremendously excited to welcome Robert Cooper as this year’s showrunner for the Scripted Series Lab. Rob has been a key member of the PSP community from the very outset and has demonstrated time and again his commitment to developing and mentoring upcoming screenwriters,” said Brian Hamilton, PSP Board Chair. “Rob’s track record creating and showrunning world-class television series speaks for itself. We are extremely fortunate to work with him as this year’s SSL showrunner.” Robert Cooper most recently created, wrote and directed episodes of CBC’s Unspeakable, following Canada’s tainted blood scandal. A lifelong dream project, the mini-series recently won the Leo Award for best dramatic series. Previously, he served as showrunner of Dirk Gently’s Holistic Detective Agency for BBC America, Netflix and AMC Studios, and is probably best known for having been showrunner of the record-breaking Stargate television franchise for MGM. He co-created Stargate Atlantis and Stargate Universe and served as executive producer, writer, and director of multiple episodes of all three series and two DTV movies. Cooper has been nominated and won several awards for both writing and directing, including two Hugo nominations and a Canadian Writer’s Guild award for best dramatic screenplay. In 2009, he was presented with an Outstanding Achievement Award for contribution to the British Columbia television industry. “It’s an amazing opportunity for me to develop an original idea with a room of eager, talented minds,” said Cooper. “Everyone involved with the PSP wants to see a more vibrant community of experienced screenwriters able to work and ultimately create home grown television series right here in BC. The passion for storytelling is clear in the applicants for this year’s program. I'm looking forward to us learning from each other.” The Scripted Series Lab is a 15-week intensive training program providing support and career- advancement opportunities for active and aspiring screenwriters from across British Columbia, where they receive the necessary support to expand their portfolio and pursue opportunities in the evolving TV marketplace. Throughout the program, participants hone their craft, strengthen their collaboration and presentation skills, and obtain a deeper understanding of the global television industry and how to market themselves within it. As the Scripted Series Lab showrunner, Cooper will mentor the six selected participants within a real-world story room over 10 weeks, breaking stories and writing scripts for the original project he brings to the room and will subsequently be pitching to streamers and networks around the world.
