And as we approach World Down Syndrome Day, we are delighted to have Becky Wall on with us again to share her story as a mom of a son diagnosed with both Down Syndrome and Autism. Becky works for FamilyLife as a field staff leader serving families and moms connected to disability, and on this episode she and I really enjoyed getting to catch up mom to mom. She served 20 years with the college campus ministry and this past year moved over to FamilyLife - a Cru ministry. Today I sit down and talk to Benny DiChiara , the Frontman and minister of the Baton Rouge's Christian Rock Band Empowered! Singer/songwriter/survivor Benny DiChiara has a powerful testimony of God's mercy and healing that he loves to share. And he has been sharing it all over the world--most recently on national and international media outlets including The 700 Club, Cornerstone Television Network's flagship show, Hope Today, The NRB Network's award-winning TV show Babbie's House, and many more. DiChiara is the founder and frontman of the indie Christian rock band Empowered, whose latest EP, Three Days, has garnered seven No. 1's over the past year. In June 2021, the title cut from the band's latest project, Three Days, hit No. 1 on IndieGospel.net's Top 20 Chart. At the same time, "Rock Bottom," the third single from the album, debuted on the same chart at No. 7, making it the third single from the album to enter these charts. In addition to the band's latest No. 1, their “Listen to the Children” single reached the No. 1 spot on Indiegospel.net's Top 20 chart in December 2020. Their “Three Days” music video has reached the No. 1 spot on the IndieGospel.net Top 10 video chart three times: in December 2020, January 2021, and again in April 2021. Their “Listen to the Children” music video has reached the No. 1 spot twice, debuting at No. 1 on the IndieGospel.net Top 10 video chart in September 2020 and hit No. 1 again in January 2021. Songs from the album have also done well on Spotify, with “Listen to the Children” impacting with 93,519 spins, “Three Days” reaching 55,631, “Jeremiah 29:11” garnering 51,370, and “Rock Bottom” already coming in with 53,652 spins. This gives DiChiara & Empowered a total of 254,172 spins from the album Three Days. A New Orleans native, DiChiara wears multiple hats as a singer, songwriter, businessman, and motivational speaker. Having come to a saving knowledge of Jesus Christ later in life, the U.S. Navy vet first fronted a secular rock band before surrendering his music to ministry. When a traumatic brain injury nearly took his life and his capacity to create music, it was his faith that helped him navigate the long, often winding road to recovery. Today, DiChiara puts that experience to use as he shares God's goodness with others through word and song. DiChiara's band, Empowered, is comprised of DiChiara (lead vocals and songwriting), Shane Madere Jr. (lead guitarist, backing vocalist), Jeff Maddox (bass and background vocals), Mic Capdeville (percussion and background vocals), and Justin Burdette (guitarist and background vocals). DiChiara and Empowered are proud to contribute to the work of the non-profit organization, Children's Cup (childrenscup.org). DiChiara has recently landed multiple high-profile media appearances, including The 700 Club, Babbie's House, and Cornerstone TV's flagship show, Hope Today, CRU (Campus Crusade for Christ), and Inspiration.org, among many others. Three Days was the band's first release since DiChiara nearly lost his life to a traumatic brain injury. His journey of healing makes the accomplishments of 2020 and 2021 all the more significant. for more in on the band please visit www.rockin4jesus.com

Do you have any traditions, special dates, activities, or places that help you commemorate significant events in your life? Especially those events where God has done something for you? While traditions often revolve around major events such as the birth and resurrection of Jesus, they can also serve to celebrate personal moments—the little things maybe only you would recognize, such as how God answered a certain prayer, supplied for your need, or made himself incredibly known to you. Crickett Keeth is in the show today chatting about her favorite traditions and leaving a legacy. She asks us to consider what we are passing down to the next generation. Think about what heritage you want to give to your family and the significance your customs carry. How can you tell others of God's faithfulness by creating a new tradition of your own or by continuing a tradition that was passed on to you? Whatever traditions you and I practice, I pray they are rooted in biblical truth and keep God at the forefront so future generations can connect with him and connect with each other. Because if there is anything worth passing on, it is Him. What is your favorite tradition? Is there a prodigal son in your life? We long for that happy ending when the son comes to his senses and is met with a celebration! But what about in the waiting? Join us today with our guest, Judy Douglass, who brings encouragement and helpful insight into this great hardship. Judy is the founder and host of Prayer for Prodigals, an online community for those who love someone who is making destructive choices. She has served as editor of two Cru (Campus Crusade for Christ) magazines, has authored six books, and speaks all over the world. A writer, speaker, encourager, and advocate, Judy loves to encourage God's children to be and do all that He created them for. "My daughter and I are very close, we used to spend a lot of time together talking about Jesus, praying and singing worship songs, and even went on a mission trip together. But in college, she totally gave up her faith and now she's living a very wordly lifestyle. Though we are still close, and I try to be there for her, sometimes alone at night, I find deep anger rising up in me. I can't seem to get rid of it. Waves of disappointment and sadness sometimes wash over me. How do I get rid of these feelings and have greater peace about the journey God has for her?" “The call of spirituality is to be fully human and fully alive.” - Brian BoeckerRuth Haley Barton once said, “...there is a truer self waiting to be recognized and breathed into life by the Spirit of God.” The war between the false self and the true self is real and for some of us, is fought throughout our lives. Franciscan priest Richard Rohr feels that there is no more challenging spiritual issue than the "problem of the self."On today's podcast, Michael welcomes back Restoring the Soul colleague Brian Boecker to discuss the false self versus the true self and consider questions like, ”What are the repetitive patterns that keep me deadened to my own desire and how do I awaken those things?” We also hope you come to realize that the call of spirituality is to be fully human and fully alive.Brian Boecker is an Intensive Clinical Soul Care Specialist at Restoring the Soul. With over ten years of working with individuals and couples, he specializes in counseling pastors, missionaries, and other Christian leaders. For 27 years he served with CRU (Campus Crusade for Christ) in a variety of leadership capacities primarily throughout Southeast Asia. He has served with multiple ministries and currently trains graduate students at Denver Seminary. Today on the podcast I am chatting with the wonderful and beloved fiction novelist, Suzanne Woods Fisher. Suzanne is such a kind and genuine person, and she has a passion for getting to the heart of those who may be misunderstood, and parts of history that may not get as much press. During our conversation, she shares her story of how she came into the writing world to become the beloved author of many (as in over THIRTY) books, as well as what draws her into a story. Her most recent book The Moonlight School shares a fictionalized account of the formidable Cora Wilson Stewart, who launched a grassroots movement to help those who didn’t have easy access to education and to combat illiteracy. The story is incredible, the book itself is such a fascinating read, and it just feels right for this episode to land right in the middle of Women’s History Month! Suzanne is most well known for her many Amish fiction books, and she shared with me how her heart for story intersected with her family as Grandfather was “raised plain.” He lived in an German Baptist community (a cousin of the Amish tradition, if you will,) where Suzanne was given accessibility to the people and strives to take readers “beyond the bonnets, beards and buggies.” She also provides some interesting insight into why people may be so drawn to stories of Amish in the fiction world, or to their way of living and simple faith that is much stronger than it may appear. Be sure and follow her, and pick up a copy of her beautiful book The Moonlight School, and find ways to listen to our conversation below. Daily Devotion - When We Try to Help God and Get in the Way"God loves you and people have a wonderful plan for your life!” This is what a good friend of mine would say when people made suggestions to the pastor or other people. It was a rephrasing of one of the Four Spiritual Laws by the late Bill Bright of Cru (Campus Crusade for Christ) and has a ring of truth to it.My friend and I, along with countless other pastors, have heard well-intentioned suggestions from people in the church many, many times. It goes something like this, "Pastor, I think you should…” or “Pastor, the Lord told me to tell you…” You get the idea.We all have thoughts about what others should or should not do, or how we might do something better or differently. Even if we don’t verbalize these thoughts out loud to others, we still have them. It's human nature to do this. This is the byproduct of our self-centered nature. It’s our attempt at helping God or even acting like Him in other people’s lives. It’s something we inherited from our ancestors Adam and Eve after they ate from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil (Genesis 2:17; 3:1-11).Our plans or God’s way?In chapter three of Ruth, the story takes an important turn. It zeroes in on one relationship within one day.Although God has His plan and His way for bringing Boaz and Ruth together, Naomi sees the need to step in to help. She spots a way to secure a better future for herself and her daughter-in-law.Naomi, Ruth’s mother-in-law, said to her, “My daughter, shouldn’t I try to look for a home that would be good for you?" (Ruth 3:1 GW).Naomi sees an opportunity and sets her plan in motion. Naomi explains the timing of her plan and describes how Ruth should make herself available to Boaz. Naomi also instructs Ruth how to look and smell her best for the occasion. Naomi adds her final advice to let Boaz take the lead when the time comes. This is manipulation, nothing less. When we try to do similar things in the lives of others, we’re being manipulative. In a sense, we see ourselves—like Naomi—helping God in some way. But when we do such things, we interfere with God and His ways. Some things to considerRead the full devotion at https://devotableapp.com/daily-devotion-when-we-try-to-help-god-and-get-in-the-way/

When we lived in Indiana, the natives there called themselves “Hoosiers.” But did you know that no one knows what a “Hoosier” is? When my son James and His wife Kayla, began their work as campus missionaries on the Chico State campus for CRU (Campus Crusade for Chirst), no one on their team at Chico State had ever heard of a “Lutheran” and, in fact, were kind of fearful at first that they were part of a Christian cult. Today, we remember and rejoice in who we are in Christ as Christians who share this tribe, “Lutheran.” So, you got questions? Trust me, it’s not like “Hoosier.” James really had an answer – and a Christian witness – that put the whole team at ease and created Christian friendship. Oh, and if your question is more along the lines of “What’s a reformation?”, no problem, it’s not like “Hoosier” either.
In this week’s episode we go back to school. We're talking Campus Crusade for Christ or as it's called now Cru or Power to Change ministries or Agape or whatever it's called. We discuss its beginnings with Bill Bright, Explo 72, the four spiritual laws, the Jesus Film Project and much more. As always we are not experts, we just google this stuff. Not only is the emotional trauma—and sometimes even physical trauma—often overlooked in these cases, these very same parents are, unfortunately, sometimes even the target of blame. This of course adds insult to an already injurious situation. Our guests are Dena and Tom Yohe. Tom is a former pastor. Dena is the author of the book You Are Not Alone. Both Tom and Dena are Cru (Campus Crusade for Christ International in the U.S.) staff members, and now affiliates. They are also the parents of a formerly troubled daughter. Their daughter is Renee Yohe; the previously suicidal, addicted, depressed, self-harming girl whose situation led friends to start the well-known nonprofit To Write Love on Her Arms (TWLOHA). Renee's life was also portrayed in the 2015 Sony Pictures release by the same name. Dena and Tom live in Orlando, Florida. Their full-time work is Hope for Hurting Parents, where Tom and Dena help and minister to parents who are hurting from the pain of having a troubled child. Why a Ministry to Parents of Troubled Teens Is Important Before parents can properly help their kids, they have to be in a physically, emotionally, and spiritually healthy place themselves. This is especially true when their kids are struggling. It's not unlike the oxygen mask that comes down out of the ceiling on an airliner. You're told—as parents—to put the oxygen mask on first, even before your kids. Why? Well, obviously you can't help your kids if you're incapacitated. I think it's wise to take a closer look at what goes on in the life of the parents of a troubled teen so we can minister to them as well. It's easy to overlook the trauma and struggles of the parents of troubled teenagers. I've seen some terribly torn up and beaten down parents in my day. One of the things I hear more than anything else when they bring their kids to Shepherds Hill Academy is, “This is like a death.” To many parents, it's almost as if they're taking their kids off life-support. That's how difficult it is. But the trauma and grief leading up to a child's enrollment in a therapeutic program is off the charts. That's why it's so important to minister to the parents as well. Hopefully, that's what we'll do today as Tom and Dena Yohe and I discuss the following topics: Who are Tom and Dena Yohe? What is To Write Love on Her Arms? How can parents with struggling teens take courage in their situation? What is the wrong thing to do for a parent with a struggling teen? What is the most encouraging thing a person can do for parents with struggling teens? What is the connection to self-injurious behavior and spirituality? Signs that your child may be struggling. When you come across a family with a bunch of young adults thriving in their faith, work, and passions, you can't help but want to ask the parents: “Ok! What is the secret?” (Right?) And for good reason: Yes we can learn through mistakes and struggles, but I vote that it is even better to learn from those who have had successes! Melissa and Jonathan Brown are some of those people. They have raised, discipled, and homeschooled 7 children, most of whom are now adults. They have also worked with CRU (Campus Crusade for Christ) for years before branching off in their own ministry. Now they coach other parents and families in how to build a family on purpose. In this conversation Melissa shares some of the best marriage advice ever. She also talks about the true key to passing faith on to our children. I think you'll be inspired by everything Melissa shares.
