Welcome to another insightful and engaging episode of The Advisory Board Podcast! This week, host Dave Hansen sits down with the incredible Danessa Itaya, President of BioOne, to uncover the secrets of franchise success. With over 30 years of experience in franchising, Danessa has seen it all—from building brands from the ground up to leading established franchise systems.A huge thank you to our episode sponsor, ClientTether, for making this conversation possible. Your support helps bring valuable insights to the franchise community! What You'll Learn in This Episode:Picking the Right Franchise Owners: The key to long-term success isn't just the business model—it's bringing in the right people. Danessa emphasizes the importance of engagement, alignment with core values, and selecting franchisees who will actively participate in the brand's growth rather than take a passive approach.Debunking the Absentee Ownership Myth: In home services, there's no such thing as a truly absentee owner. Even in semi-absentee models, owners must stay engaged, understand the numbers, and lead their teams effectively. If you're dreaming of a “hands-off” franchise, think again! The Power of Capitalization: Too often, franchisees struggle because they are undercapitalized. Danessa shares why having financial reserves isn't just about security—it's about seizing growth opportunities, sustaining marketing efforts, and ensuring long-term viability.Building Market Density & Franchisee Collaboration: More franchisees in a market means more marketing dollars, stronger brand recognition, and better business growth. A rising tide lifts all boats, and the most successful franchisees embrace a cooperative mindset rather than a competitive one.The Importance of Core Values: BioOne and Five Star Franchising live and breathe their core values—Driven, Real, Innovative, Vital, and Enthusiastic (DRIVE). These principles guide decision-making and create a culture where franchisees and corporate teams thrive together.Supporting Franchisees Through Challenges: Every business faces obstacles, but the best franchise systems provide a safety net of coaching, peer support, and collaborative problem-solving. Sometimes, the most valuable thing a franchisor can do is listen. To top it all off, Danessa shares a heartwarming (and surprising!) story about a BioOne clean-up uncovering long-lost family photos, reminding us why their work is about so much more than just business.Final ThoughtsIf you're looking for expert insights on franchising, whether you're an emerging brand or an established system, this episode is packed with actionable advice and real-world wisdom. In this episode of Litigation Nation, co-hosts Danessa Watkins and Jack Sanker return from a brief hiatus to delve into two significant legal topics making headlines: recent tariffs imposed by the Trump administration and a high-profile defamation lawsuit involving music industry giants Drake and Kendrick Lamar. We kick off the episode with Jack discussing the newly announced tariffs on steel and aluminum imports, which are set to take effect on March 12, 2025. He explains the implications of these tariffs, including a substantial increase from 10% to 25%, and how they will affect various industries, particularly construction. Jack highlights the statutory powers granted to the president by Congress, specifically referencing the Trade Expansion Act of 1962, which allows for such tariff increases under the guise of national security. He emphasizes the potential consequences for businesses reliant on international imports, including price hikes and shortages, and discusses the lack of existing contractual provisions to address these sudden changes in material costs. For the latest on International Trade, Amundsen Davis's Ngosong Fonkem has multiple legal write-ups that can be read on www.amundsendavislaw.com.Transitioning to the second segment, Danessa takes the reins to cover the ongoing defamation lawsuit filed by Drake against UMG Recordings, Inc. The lawsuit stems from a heated feud between Drake and Kendrick Lamar, which escalated into a series of diss tracks and public accusations. Danessa outlines the timeline of events leading to the lawsuit, including violent incidents that occurred at Drake's home, which he attributes to the fallout from the feud and UMG's actions in promoting Kendrick's diss track, "Not Like Us."The hosts analyze the unique nature of the lawsuit, noting that Drake has chosen to sue the record label rather than Kendrick himself. Danessa discusses the creative and visually engaging nature of Drake's complaint, which includes graphic elements and a dramatic introduction detailing the threats to his safety. The episode explores the legal complexities of defamation, particularly the requirement for public figures like Drake to prove actual malice on the part of UMG.Danessa and Jack emphasize the importance of understanding the legal ramifications of both the tariff situation and the defamation lawsuit, encouraging listeners to stay informed about these evolving issues. They remind the audience to consult legal professionals for guidance in navigating these complex matters, particularly those in the construction industry facing the fallout from the new tariffs.

In Ep. 89 of Earned, Conor sits down with the legendary Danessa Myricks, founder of the inclusive, “boundary-breaking” beauty brand Danessa Myricks Beauty. We jump in by discussing how Danessa became an “accidental makeup artist,” and broke into the beauty industry by creating educational makeup DVDs. We learn how the success of those DVDs led Danessa to consult for other beauty brands, and even become Director of Product Innovation at Benefit Cosmetics. We then hear why she became more passionate about teaching makeup artists around the world at a time when education around beauty was not easily accessible. Danessa shares how her observations around the lack of representation for marginalized communities in the then-homogenous beauty landscape inspired her to “be the change she wanted to see,” and led her to create her inclusive, eponymous beauty brand. We then discuss how Danessa built her community of over one million fans, and she explains how she cultivates connection through adding value wherever possible. Danessa shares why there is “so much power in our conversations about beauty” in bringing people together around the world. Finally, we discuss Danessa's ambitions for the future of the brand, and close the show by learning how “showing up consistently” and recognizing organic brand fans has skyrocketed the brand's success on social. In this episode, you will learn:Why Danessa started her brand to help serve marginalized communitiesHow Danessa cultivated her large, yet close-knit community by adding value without costWhy Danessa believes beauty can bring the world togetherResources:Danessa Myricks BeautyConnect with the Guest(s):Danessa Myricks LinkedInConnect with Conor Begley & CreatorIQ:Conor's LinkedIn - @conormbegleyCreatorIQ LinkedIn - @creatoriqFollow us on social:CreatorIQ YouTube - @TribeDynamicsCreatorIQ Instagram - @creatoriqCreatorIQ TikTok - @creator.iqCreatorIQ Twitter - @CreatorIQ

Today on the Friends in Beauty Podcast I welcome my fave Makeup Artist, Photographer, Entrepreneur & Founder of Danessa's Myricks Beauty, Danessa Myricks to the Friends in Beauty guest chair.   In a world focused on labels, Danessa Myricks has continuously broken boundaries and built a world of beauty for people from all races, ages and genders.   Starting out as a self-taught makeup artist, Danessa learned how to use products in unconventional ways to create stunning looks. Ignoring industry norms, she began to teach other artists about her techniques and product selections, and created a name for herself in the beauty world.    After turning heads at some of the largest brands, Danessa led product development for some of the most successful launches in history at brands like KISS and Benefit Cosmetics. But she knew the world of makeup still felt exclusive to many, so she decided to launch her own brand, Danessa Myricks Beauty.    Creatively combining artistry with product manipulation, she designs and launches some of the most high-performance products on the market.   Danessa has created looks for celebrities, worked with entertainers in music and film and collaborates with other brands and artists to push the beauty industry forward. She trains makeup artists and enthusiasts worldwide and continues to create some of the most innovative and inclusive beauty products on the market.    But the most rewarding part of her work is hearing from people who felt underrepresented, unseen or ignored by beauty brands who finally land at a brand made for all, Danessa Myricks Beauty.   If you know me then you know that Danessa is hands down my favorite makeup artist on the planet. Not only is she talented but she's such an amazing + uplifting woman with an infectious spirit.    In this interview Danessa shares: -The evolution of Danessa Myricks Beauty -The importance of using your name when building a brand -How she manages being an introvert in an extroverted profession -What she sees holding artists back from reaching their full potential -How she takes care of herself -Her keys to success in the industry  -What's next for DMB and sooo much more.   I'm so proud to be able to present this conversation to you & so grateful to Danessa for sharing her time with us and dropping countless gems. I asked our guest today to share her thoughts on fearless authenticity and walking in purpose even when all the signs point to failure.Welcome to the Lead with Levity podcast. We work to equip leaders to build unique and refreshing work environments that are marked by fun, team unity, and healthy communication. Today's guest is Danessa Knaupp. Danessa is an executive coach on a mission is to get really great leaders embedded everywhere because we all benefit from that. She’s also the author of Naked at Work: A Leader’s Guide to Fearless Authenticity. In this episode, we cover:How Danessa picked herself up after an embarrassing eventHow you find the lighter side of any bad experienceA model for authenticity, not #authenticityAuthenticity misfiresResources Mentioned[BOOK] Naked at Work: A Leader’s Guide to Fearless AuthenticityDanessaKnaupp.comAvenue8Advisors.comLinkedInQuote This - Danessa Knaupp Quotes:“I began to think about, ‘where have I been really connected with leaders?’ and it was when I believed they were human.”“A lot of us walk around with an idea of a leader that is far too narrow. Leaders come in all shapes and sizes, they can be effective a million different ways.”“If you think about some of the things you believe about yourself. The person who wrote that story is 5, 7, 9 years old. I don't know about you, but I have not consulted with seven year olds on a regular basis on how to make decisions, except that I am. Because the interesting parts of myself that tell me those things are [from a] seven [year old].”“We are all total and absolute works in progress, and we pick up and put down any baggage or experience we want at any point in this journey.”“Authenticity builds trust. Trust creates safety, and safety at work is magical.”“Sometimes, people think when I talk about being intentional and strategic that somehow that's not authentic. But think about how you are authentic with your grandmother, with your lover, with your best friend, and with your child. Those are all authentic versions of yourself. Those are all really true to you. And yet the whispered conversation between you and your lover, as you fall asleep is never something you would tell your grandmother or your child.”My job here is to learn and evolve, and man that is not easy. Sometimes people think that when I say, "I'm a failure junkie," or, "I really embrace failure," that I've found some sort of way to make it less horrifyingly painful--I haven't. It's painful every time. I just know that there's good stuff on the other side of it.My mission is to get really great leaders embedded everywhere we can, because we all benefit from that.About Danessa KnauppDanessa is an executive coach, CEO, and keynote speaker shifting the global conversation on leadership. February 20th is Tempest Smith Day.  On February 20, 2001, Tempest Kayne Smith died by her own hand.  She was twelve years old.  She had been tormented by her classmates for some years because she was shy, because she liked to wear black clothing, and especially because she chose to follow Wicca as her religious path.  At that age, time goes very slowly.  At that age, well-intentioned advice to confide in teachers, counselors and parents meet with trust issues.  Besides, how was it possible that the teachers and staff at her school would not have known, as blatant as some of the abuse was?I have been promoting Tempest Smith Day since the day I first heard of her.  I see her as a martyr, and as a patron of victims of bullying, especially religious bullying. In spite of hopes that things would get better, they have gotten worse.  We now have public officials and candidates for office who claim they want to deport people based on their religion.  What are we going to do?  Blessed Be!
