3.13.2025 #RolandMartinUnfiltered: Environmental Justice Eliminated, Ill. AG Stops Teacher Prep Cuts, School Choice Debate The Environmental Protection Agency is shutting down its division that helps low-income communities overwhelmed by pollution. Dr. Mustafa Ali will explain the devastating impact this will have on Black communities. The Illinois Attorney General has successfully fought against the Department of Education's attempt to cut off millions of dollars in grants to train and support new teachers. Kwame Raoul will discuss the case and what's next as the DOE approaches elimination. We will also examine the DOE's recent cuts and what they mean for those receiving financial assistance and those who need to pay off student loans. The issue of school choice continues to spark heated debates. You'll hear from a Black Texas State Representative on the topic, as well as insights from Congresswoman Summer Lee, who argues that the school choice agenda being pushed by conservatives will only expand existing inequalities. #BlackStarNetwork partner: Fanbasehttps://www.startengine.com/offering/fanbase This Reg A+ offering is made available through StartEngine Primary, LLC, member FINRA/SIPC. In this episode of Litigation Nation, co-hosts Jack Sanker and Danessa Watkins dive into two significant legal developments.First, Danessa discusses the defamation lawsuit stemming from the Netflix miniseries "Baby Reindeer," which follows the tumultuous life of a Scottish comedian and his stalker. The series, based on the real-life experiences of comedian Richard Gadd, has sparked controversy after a woman named Fiona Harvey claimed the character Martha Scott was based on her. Harvey has filed a lawsuit against Netflix, alleging defamation and emotional distress, among other claims. Netflix has responded with a motion to dismiss, citing the anti-SLAPP statute, arguing that the portrayal of Harvey is substantially true. The court's opinion reveals the complexities of the case, including the similarities between the character and Harvey, and the implications of Netflix's claim that the series is a true story.Next, we shift our focus to the wave of lawsuits filed against TikTok by multiple state attorneys general, including Illinois. These lawsuits allege that TikTok's business practices are harmful to young users, promoting addictive behavior and mental health issues. The complaints highlight TikTok's algorithm, features like infinite scrolling, and the platform's marketing strategies that target vulnerable youth. The Illinois Attorney General, Kwame Raoul, emphasizes the need to hold TikTok accountable for prioritizing profits over the well-being of children.Join us as we unpack these intriguing legal battles and explore the implications for both Netflix and TikTok in the ever-evolving landscape of media and technology.

The Illinois Attorney General's office has apologized to a federal judge demanding answers after implying his ruling against the state's mass transit concealed carry ban has “safety implications.” Northern District of Illinois federal Judge Iain Johnston ruled the Second Amendment is violated by the state's prohibition of people carrying concealed firearms on mass transit. The state appealed and in a motion said the “the potential safety implications of the Court's order are highlighted by a recent mass shooting on the CTAs Blue Line, in which four people were murdered with firearms three days after the Court's order was entered.” Johnston demanded whoever wrote that to answer questions during a hearing scheduled Wednesday.Support this podcast: https://secure.anedot.com/franklin-news-foundation/ce052532-b1e4-41c4-945c-d7ce2f52c38a?source_code=xxxxxx

On September 10th WCPT's Joan Esposito talked to Illinois Attorney General Kwame Raoul, who began a second term in office last year after winning reelection in November 2022. In the interview Raoul spoke about misogyny where it concerns Vice President Kamala and men who "think that they somehow are compromising their manhood by supporting a woman to be in a position higher than whatever they have achieved and that it's not displaying strength somehow, it's somehow displaying a weakness. If you can overcome any insecurity that you have with regards to that, then that displays strength," he said, expressing sentiments similar to those that he shared with more than 40,000 Black men on a virtual fundraising call for Kamala Harris in July. Raoul also talked about his efforts to protect women in Illinois from the aggressive tactics of state attorneys general like Ken Paxton of Texas, "who longarm into other states, like the state of Illinois" in order to gather medical records related to reproductive health care. Paxton recently sued the Biden administration to block a federal rule that shields such records. And in the wake of the mass shooting at Apalachee High School in Georgia, Raoul advocated an all-inclusive approach for reducing gun violence. "It's everything," he said. "It's the accessibility of guns, it's making sure that minors are not in possession of such guns, making sure people with developmental disabilities aren't in possession of guns, if they're a threat to themselves or somebody else. It's making sure that we don't let trauma go untreated." Catch "Joan Esposito: Live, Local and Progressive" weekdays from 2:00 to 5:00 p.m. Central on WCPT (heartlandsignal.com/wcpt820).

It's become more difficult for residents of south suburban Dolton to attend village board meetings. They now face roadblocks, barricades, long lines, capacity limits, metal detectors and a heavy police presence that some say is being deployed to discourage opposition to Mayor Tiffany Henyard. Dolton's acting police chief has said the steps are necessary to protect Henyard from “countless” threats she's faced. However, the police department's own records show only four threats resulted in police reports from February 1 through April 7, around the time the extra security was put in place. Two of the alleged threats were sent to Mayor Henyard via social media, the others came in the form of an email and phone call. None appear to have resulted in an arrest or charges, according to the police reports. Dolton took three months to respond to WGN Investigates' records request, far longer than required by law.

A Saline County Coroner's Jury ruled Jade's death a homicide in January 2008. However, leadership at the Saline County Sheriff's Office have publicly shared their "personal opinions" that Jade died by suicide. While they maintain that the case is open, it's not active. I am deeply troubled by the lack of progress. Mixed messaging, where an agency's public statements are not consistent with the official designation of a case, can erode public trust. This can lead to skepticism about the agency's competence or motives. Public statements can also inadvertently influence potential witnesses. If the public believes the investigating agency has already reached a conclusion, even informally, individuals might be less likely to come forward with information, thinking it might not be considered relevant. Meanwhile, Jade's family and the community are left in a state of uncertainty, and their faith in the justice system has been profoundly shaken. The Attorney General's Office can intervene in cases where there are conflicts of interest or when the complexity of the case demands a comprehensive approach. Given the nature of this case, I am respectfully urging you to have your office conduct a thorough investigation into this matter. By taking over this investigation, your office could bring fresh perspectives, resources, and a renewed commitment to finding the truth. Furthermore, your intervention would instill public confidence in the justice system.I am hopeful that with your help, we can bring closure to Jade's family, provide answers to a concerned community, and ensure that justice prevails.Thank you for your time and consideration.Sincerely,[Your Full Name][Your Signature (if sending a printed letter)] Did you know you can listen to this episode ad-free? [This blog will always be free to read, but it's also how I pay my bills. So, if you like what you read, please consider a paid subscription. And yes, I do speaking engagements. If you need a Pride Month speaker, hit me up.](WASHINGTON) — On Tuesday, House Republicans passed sweeping legislation that would prohibit all minors from entering Christian places of worship, ban Christian clergy from public K-12 campuses, and otherwise restrict interaction between children and Christian clergy in public spaces. The Children's Health and Religious Integrity, Safety, and Trust Act of 2023—CHRIST Act—was introduced only weeks ago in response to a massive public outcry over widespread sexual abuse of children across numerous Christian denominations in the United States.“I am thankful to my colleagues for ensuring rapid passage of this bill, and I urge our Senate counterparts and the White House to seek immediate passage and implementation,” said House Speaker Kevin McCarthy, who has won praise for his leadership in confronting sexual abuse in churches. The sexual exploitation of children by Christian clergy has come to the forefront of the nation's conscience following seemingly unending revelations over the past two decades of adults in positions of authority assaulting and raping minors within their congregations only for that abuse to be swept under the rug.In the United States, sexual abuse of children in Catholic parishes, alone, have led to about $4 billion in payouts to more than 17,000 survivors, according to data compiled by U.S. Catholic dioceses. Despite the widespread documented abuse, only one arrest has been made in connection with these cases: a defrocked priest charged with lying to FBI agents. Some experts believe those numbers are just scratching the surface and could as much as double within the next decade as more investigations conclude their findings. This past April, a report released by the Maryland Attorney General found that more 600 children have been sexually abused by priests and other church officials in state parishes.Last month, the Illinois Attorney General released a report revealing that 2,000 children in his state had been sexually abused by Catholic officials. The investigations were at least partially motivated by a report published five years ago by then-Pennsylvania Attorney General Josh Shapiro—now that state's governor—detailing at least 1,000 survivors of sexual abuse by more than 300 priests and the myriad efforts by church officials to cover it up.For example, in 2019, the Associated Press reported that nearly a thousand clergy members accused of child sexual abuse had been left off lists circulated by Catholic dioceses, including more than 100 former clergy members who have already been charged with rape or possession of child pornography.Reports of child sexual abuse in Christian churches have gone far beyond U.S. Catholic dioceses. For several years, the Southern Baptist Convention has been reconciling with ongoing revelations that have, to date, found more 700 victims of sexual abuse by about 380 clergy and other church leaders. Survivors were “stonewalled and denigrated” by top SBC leaders, according to a report released last year.Sexual abuse scandals have similarly plagued white evangelical, charismatic, or independently-affiliated churches. Released this week, the Amazon Prime docuseries “Shiny Happy People” details a startling, widespread pattern of sexual abuse among congregants subscribing to teachings of the Institute of Basic Life Principles (IBLP), a nondenominational Christian organization that has gained major influence in the United States. The documentary laid out efforts to cover-up various sex crimes by Josh Duggar, the eldest son in the reality TV family featured in TLC series “19 Kids and Counting,” including molestation and possession of child pornography. It then revealed evidence of countless other alleged sex crimes within the IBLP network, including an implication of inappropriate conduct by Bill Gothard, the minister who founded IBLP.Countless other child sexual abuse scandals have been cited across the country in numerous denominations at churches and religious schools. The growing outrage over these reports has reached such a fever pitch that House Republicans, newly in the majority after last year's midterm election, have taken great pains to distance themselves from abusive clergy and hold them accountable.“Look, we're not saying that all Christian clergy are predators, of course,” stated Speaker McCarthy at a press conference following the vote. “But until we have assurance from church leaders that there will be zero tolerance for child abusers within their ranks, we cannot allow children to be put in harm's way.”He then pointedly added: “Christ would protect children. These churches need to be reminded of his teachings and get their houses in order. It's time to root out these demons who are preying on children.”Other GOP officials were more blunt.“This is a culture problem,” insisted Rep. Majorie Taylor Greene (R-GA). “You have these men in dresses performing in front of kids and reading to them, indoctrinating our children into an abusive ideology. Children should be nowhere around these predators.”Charlotte's Web Thoughts is a reader-supported publication. Danny Masterson. Donald Trump. Did you know that rape is the most underreported crime? Did you know that rape was originally a crime of trespass against property? Why property you may ask? Because the raped woman was deemed to be the property of her father or her husband! But what if, in the above original definition of rape, the rape victim was an unmarried orphan? This is more than an academic question. Because, as my guest, Prof. Diane Rosenfeld explains, over time governments stepped in on behalf of rape victims. And therein lurks another problem: rape laws were written by men. So rape cases were and are prosecuted with laws that reflect men's perspectives on this terrifying crime. It's no wonder that most prosecutors, in fact, try to dismiss allegations of rape and dissuade victims from bringing charges. And when rapes are prosecuted, only 2-4% succeed.  In the last 30 days, we've had two high-profile rape cases - one civil, the other criminal. Donald Trump was not found liable for rape in the civil suit brought by E. Jean Carroll (although he was found liable for sexually abusing and defaming her). And Danny Masterson, the actor from "That 70s Show", was found guilty of two of the three counts of rape. When it comes to violent crimes, rape seems to stand apart from others. For example, in other violent crimes, we don't generally ask the victims if they fought back or screamed. But we do that in rape. Also, victims of other crimes don't suffer from the social stigmas that rape victims do! I am referring to victim blaming. So to better understand the legal, cultural and social history of the crime of rape, I spoke to Professor Diane Rosenfeld of Harvard Law School, where she teaches courses such as Gender Violence, Law and Social Justice; Theories of Sexual Coercion; and Title IX, which is the federal civil rights law that protects discrimination based on sex. In addition to teaching at Harvard Law School, Prof. Rosenfeld has taught several courses at Harvard College, including a seminar on Creating Cultures of Sexual Respect on Campus. Prior to teaching, she served as the first Senior Counsel in the Office on Violence Against Women at the United States Department of Justice and as an Executive Assistant Attorney General at the Illinois Attorney General's Office. Prof. Rosenfeld's research areas include Title IX and campus sexual assault prevention and response; prevention of intimate partner homicide; and addressing commercial sexual exploitation of women and girls. Her current focus is creating a bonobo-inspired sisterhood among women to overcome patriarchal violence. And if you are wondering what bonobo is, well, you've come to the right place, Prof. Rosenfeld is the author of The Bonobo Sisterhood: Revolution Through Female Alliance, a recent book that we discuss in this episode. To learn more about Prof. Rosenfeld, you can visit her academic page or personal website. You may also be interested in my podcast conversation with Dr. Carrie Baker about the history of the movement against sexual harassment, which started in 1975. Startlingly, the rates of sexual harassment haven't changed much since 1975! And as Dr. Baker explains it, sexual harassment is about power! I hope you enjoy these episodes. Chris finds an old consumer complaint form that was filed in 1989 with the Illinois Attorney General's office in order to get out of a contract with a video dating service. This was a service where you create a profile video that is mailed to prospective love interests via VHS tape and in exchange you receive regular shipments of others who are looking for their own prospective love interest. Chris alleged at the time that he met no one through the service, that each tape received featured the same individuals that he previously declined, and that the company had violated its payment financing installment policy by requesting full payment rather than the agreed upon monthly installments. Chris and Jerry discuss the trend of video dating services at the time as well as critique the Q&A interviews of the prospective love candidates sent to Chris on one particular VHS tape.

Before assuming this role, he served as an attorney advisor to Commissioner Rohit Chopra and as a staff attorney in the Midwest Regional Office. Prior to joining the FTC, Mr. Levine worked for the Illinois Attorney General, where he prosecuted predatory for-profit colleges and participated in rulemaking and other policy initiatives to promote affordability and accountability in higher education. We announced what we call a “click to cancel” rule. And this is a rule about subscription plans. What the proposed rule says is that companies – vendors – should make it no more difficult to cancel a subscription than it is to sign up… It's very easy for consumers to sign up for these services. We want to make it just as easy for consumers to exit these services.Samuel Levine Director of the Bureau of Consumer Protection at the FTCEarlier this year, we announced a market study sending subpoenas to major social media platforms to ask them what they're doing to stop the huge proliferation of fraudulent ads over social media. We're also doing a study now on the franchise relationship and the potential power asymmetries between franchisee and franchisers. We're looking at the cloud computing market. We have a whole host of initiatives right now that are not geared around law enforcement but are geared around shining a light on often opaque industries to help shape public policy and eventually shape FTC law enforcement as well.Samuel Levine, Director of the Bureau of Consumer Protection at the FTCDr. Michael Carome is an expert on issues of drug and medical device safety, FDA oversight, and healthcare policy. He is the director of Public Citizen's Health Research Group. In 2002, Congress passed for the first time what's called the Medical Device User Fee Act… So, the companies now pay the FDA for the review and oversight of their products. Those user fees fundamentally changed the relationship between the FDA, the regulatory agency, and the medical device companies that are regulated by the agency. And that relationship which should be in part an adversarial relationship now is viewed as a partnership by both the agency and the medical device industry. The agency even in some of their documents refers to these companies as “partners,” as “customers.”… Customer satisfaction is key for the FDA and their customers in their eyes - rather than patients and the public - are the companies.Dr. Michael Carome, Director of Public Citizen's Health Research GroupThe FDA in our view had a very rigorous process for requiring the testing of those (Covid 19) vaccines… And we ourselves looked independently at the clinical trial data… We quickly concluded that independent of the FDA and any corporations that these vaccines were highly effective and very safe… Since then, there have been hundreds of millions of doses received by hundreds of millions of people across the world and they really have prevented serious complications and probably prevented millions of deaths with some very limited and rare adverse effects.Dr. Michael Carome, Director of Public Citizen's Health Research GroupSquishing the federal cop on the corporate crime beat is a prime priority for lobbyists in Congress.Ralph NaderIn Case You Haven't Heard w/ Francesco DeSantis 1. In Arlington, Amazon has halted construction of their much-vaunted second headquarters – or “HQ2” according to the Washington Post. Some may remember the race to the bottom in terms of corporate tax cuts and subsidies that ensued across much of the country in 2017 and ‘18 when Amazon suggested cities and states could compete for this development. Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez famously opposed these giveaways to Amazon and was pilloried for that in the mainstream press. Turns out, she was right on the money. Despite the fact that Amazon is postponing the construction of this facility, they are still poised to reap over $150 million in taxpayer subsidies from the state of Virginia.2. Harvard University has accepted a $300 million donation from hedge fund manager and right wing billionaire donor Ken Griffin, according to the New York Daily News. In exchange, Harvard will rename their Graduate School of Arts and Sciences to the Kenneth C. Griffin Graduate School of Arts and Sciences.3. In Palestine, trade unions have issued an open letter calling for global solidarity. This letter urged global publics to eliminate procurement from companies complicit in Israeli apartheid and the occupation, divest pension funds from State of Israel Bonds, and specifically called on “port workers and their unions to refrain from loading/offloading Israeli ships, as was done in Oakland, California,” noting that many port workers and unions did the same when combating apartheid in South Africa.4. The American Prospect reports that in Florida, nursing home interests are dumping money into the campaign coffers of Republican state leadership to grease the wheels for a bill which would immunize themselves from lawsuits related to wrongful death in their facilities. As David Dayen tweeted, “Ron DeSantis's War on Woke masks his actual War on Lawsuits.”5. NorthJersey.com reports that a new law in New Jersey has gone into effect, guaranteeing workers a week of severance for every year of service when large employers issue mass layoffs. This law was enacted following the Toys R Us bankruptcy, wherein longtime workers were only granted severance after a massive public pressure campaign.6. Dashcam videos obtained by WIRED show how self-driving cars – currently being recklessly tested in San Francisco – are clogging streets, delaying public transportation, and creating dangerous conditions on the roads. “Autonomous cars in San Francisco made 92 unplanned stops between May and December 2022—88 percent of them on streets with transit service, according to city transportation authorities, who collected the data from social media reports, 911 calls, and other sources, because companies aren't required to report all the breakdowns.”7. In a novel approach, CODEPINK is using digital tools to crowdfund an ad in a major newspaper. This ad urges President Biden to play peacemaker and “End the War in Ukraine.” Supporters can view and donate to the ad at CODEPINK.org.8. A recent article in the climate-focused magazine Grist covers the choices facing the Biden administration regarding the Colorado River. The administration has put forward two bleak plans: “One …would dry up Arizona to preserve California's strong water rights; the other would spread cuts among the states and risk litigation from California.”9. Ben Jacobs reports that, in a speech to the NRA convention, former President Trump appeared to endorse ending home rule in Washington, DC. In typical Trump prose, he said “I think we have to take it over, take over management of our capital." This is a continuation of the assault on DC's sovereignty which recently came to a head when President Biden chose to join with Republicans to block DC's revised criminal code.10. UNITE HERE, the hospitality workers union, grew 18% in 2022, per Bloomberg Law. This stunning growth is second only to the Teamsters, which we covered on this segment last week. As the reinvigorated labor movement continues to expand, we might expect to see this kind of growth among other major unions, such as the United Auto Workers.11. Checking in on out of control police practices, two stories stand out: In New York, Ars Technica reports that the city has begun rolling out “hulking, 400 lb” police robots after being forced to withdraw the project over civil liberties concerns in 2021. Mayor Eric Adams recently slashed budgets for city services like libraries, yet each of these robots will cost around $75,000. In Memphis, the MPD is facing backlash after unveiling a new unit which will “arrest unaccompanied minors that sell food, play loud music, are 'inappropriately dressed' or dancing in the street in Downtown Memphis" per Commercial Appeal. Cardell Orrin, the executive director of the nonprofit advocacy group Stand for Children, compared this to the “Pre-Crime Unit from [the movie] 'Minority Report,'” and added that “targeting minors for a subjective concept like ‘inappropriate clothing' is a coded criminalization of Black culture and Black youth.”12. A bombshell new report from the Corporate Research Project at Good Jobs First reveals that since the year 2000, large companies in the United States have paid “$96 billion in fines and settlements to resolve allegations of covert price-fixing and related anti-competitive practices in violation of antitrust laws.” The companies that have been forced to pay the most include Visa Inc. – at a whopping $6.2 billion – along with Deutsche Bank, Barclays, MasterCard and Citigroup, though the report makes clear that price fixing occurs in many sectors ranging from automotive parts to power generation to healthcare services. Philip Mattera, who authored the report, is quoted saying “Large corporations which are supposed to be competing with one another are often secretly conspiring to set prices…In doing so, they cause economic harm to consumers and contribute to inflation.” Get full access to Ralph Nader Radio Hour at www.ralphnaderradiohour.com/subscribe

I'm Stacey Simms and these are the top diabetes stories and headlines of the past seven days. XX In the news is brought to you by T1D Exchange! T1D Exchange is a nonprofit organization dedicated to improving outcomes for the entire T1D population. https://t1dexchange.org/stacey/ XX Our top story is big news.. Dexcom's G7 gets FDA approval. This device with a shorter, half hour warm up time, with the sensor and transmitter all in one piece was approved for people age 2 and up with all types of diabetes. It was approved as an iCGM as expected, which is good news for the automated systems the G6 currently works with.. much more to come of course, we've done a lot of episodes on the features and design of the G7 so I'd urge you to listen to those if you haven't yet and of course we'll follow up with a new episode with Dexcom as soon as they'll talk to me! XX In other news.. Illinois Attorney General files a fraud lawsuit, accusing Eli Lilly, CVS Pharmacy, Novo Nordisk and several other pharmaceutical companies of artificially inflating the cost of insulin by over 1,000% since the late 1990s. The complaint singles out Eli Lilly in particular, noting the price for a dose of its analog insulin Humalog rose by 1,527% between 1997 and 2018. "Remarkably, nothing about these medications has changed," the complaint states. "Today's $350 insulin is the exact same drug defendants originally sold for $20." The suit also notes that 13% of Illinoisans, about 1.3 million people, live with diabetes, making the pharma companies' alleged monopoly scheme a public health threat. There are several other state and class action suits against the insulin makers going through the courts right now. So far none have landed more than a glancing blow. https://www.courthousenews.com/illinois-attorney-general-sues-over-sky-high-insulin-prices/ XX A new contender, though, might be entering the arena. Mark Cuban's Cost Plus Pharmacy put out a tweet this week asking for feedback on adding insulin to their lower-cost inventory. Quote - Insulin users: we are evaluating a future insulin test program and would like your feedback. If we offered a 90-day supply of a fast-acting insulin (up to 12 vials/8 packs of pens) for $170 incl. shipping, what would you think?” There's a feedback form and I'll link that up in the show notes. https://forms.office.com/Pages/ResponsePage.aspx?id=nlWlyavTPES7xglhq5HvDwx1m5bO2mRDq1ekDvUshMtUNUZBM0dDUTA3RVpUOEY1WVNWVDE4U0JTMiQlQCN0PWcu XX People with diabetes who used glucose lowering drugs prior to getting COVID-19 seem to have fewer COVID-19 related adverse outcomes during hospitalization. The mediations have already been shown, albeit in conflicting findings, to have possible benefits regarding morbidity and mortality among patients with diabetes who become infected with COVID-19. These meds include orals like Metformin as well as injectables like sglt2 inhibitors like Jardiance and Invokana GLP-1 agonists like Ozempic and Trulicity. https://www.ajmc.com/view/glucose-lowering-drugs-may-reduce-risk-of-covid-19-related-adverse-events-in-patients-with-diabetes XX New research about opioids and diabetes. This study says people People with diabetes who underwent surgery had a significantly increased rate of prolonged opioid use (POU) compared to people without diabetes who underwent surgery. 56% higher for people with type 2 and more than 200% higher for those with type 1. This was a big, retrospective, observational study of more than 43,000 people who had operations at a single diverse healthcare system in 2008-2019. The researchers say this shows that in a real-world setting healthcare providers are generally not accounting for individual risk factors when prescribing postoperative opioids. https://www.medscape.com/viewarticle/985068 XX Teens with Type 1 diabetes (T1D) who took bromocriptine, a medication used to treat Parkinson's disease and Type 2 diabetes, had lower blood pressure and less stiff arteries after one month of treatment compared to those who did not take the medicine, according to a small study published in Hypertension, an American Heart Association journal. People with type 1 are at higher risk of high blood pressure and those diagnosed with T1D as children have even higher risks for heart disease. Therefore, researchers are interested in ways to slow down the onset of vascular disease in children with T1D. The study's small size is a limitation. However, the researchers note that further research into bromocriptine's impact on vascular health in a greater number of people with Type 1 diabetes is warranted; they are planning larger trials. https://medicalxpress.com/news/2022-12-parkinson-medication-blood-pressure-teens.html XX CVS is facing a fraud charge with a lawsuit accusing them of deceptive fundraising in a campaign it held for the American Diabetes Association. Prior to each customer's transaction, a checkout screen prompts the customer with several options for pre-selected dollar amounts, as well as an opt-out option, allowing donations to the diabetes association. Yet, the plaintiff alleges, CVS did not forward donations to the diabetes association, but instead applied the donations toward a legally binding $10 million obligation CVS made to the diabetes association. In November, Edward L. Powers, a lawyer for CVS, filed a motion to dismiss the case, challenging the plaintiff and his lawyer on their interpretation of the alleged $10 million “debt.” CVS says they agreed to fundraise from customers and turn over the donations to the diabetes association. After more than three years of fundraising, CVS would make up the difference between the cumulative customer donations and $10 million, according to the motion. The group bringing the suit disagrees and says everyone who made a campaign donations” are entitled to damages. https://www.bostonglobe.com/2022/12/05/metro/tweet-draws-attention-lawsuit-accusing-cvs-fundraising-fraud-checkout-cvs-has-filed-motion-dismiss-suit/ XX Wearing a CGM can keep you out of the hospital.. according to a new study focusing on Veterans Affairs clinics in the US. Wearing a CGM was associated with a lower risk for all-cause hospitalization and mortality in adults with type 1 and type 2 diabetes. This was even though the people with type 2 who received CGM were actually unhealthier [than non-CGM users] according to the researchers, who called the mortality reductions, dramatic. During a presentation at the World Congress on Insulin Resistance, this researcher said: “All of this data suggests that we may need to look at these types of outcomes in a much more serious fashion, because there may be some additional benefits that we didn't appreciate. If true, then maybe CGM use may become more like the SGLT2 inhibitors, and we'll start using them in a much more comprehensive way.” https://www.healio.com/news/endocrinology/20221202/cgm-use-lowers-hospitalizations-may-reduce-mortality-in-type-1-and-type-2-diabetes XX Back to the news in a moment but first.. The T1D Exchange Registry is a research study conducted online over time, designed to foster innovation and improve the lives of people with T1D. The platform is open to both adults and children with T1D living in the U.S. Personal information remains confidential and participation is fully voluntary. Once enrolled, participants will complete annual surveys and have the opportunity to sign up for other studies on specific topics related to T1D. The registry aims to improve knowledge of T1D, accelerate the discovery and development of new treatments and technologies, and generate evidence to support policy or insurance changes that help the T1D community. By sharing opinions, experiences and data, patients can help advance meaningful T1D treatment, care and policy. The registry is now available on the T1D Exchange website and is simple to navigate, mobile and user-friendly. For more information or to register, go to www.t1dregistry.org/stacey XX outed by celebrities, raved about by TikTok users, and advertised by med spas, a new class of drugs for treating diabetes and obesity has exploded in popularity for its weight-loss effects, leading to rippling shortages across several of the medications. Amid the surge in demand, Eli Lilly and pharmacies have started to tighten access to the latest of this type of drug, tirzepatide, focusing on giving it to people with type 2 diabetes, the only population it's authorized for so far. But that's left another set of patients scrambling — people with clinical obesity who turned to the medication as one of their few options for treatment. The class of drugs are GLP-1 receptor agonists, which mimic the effects of a hormone that can help people feel full. Within this group, Novo Nordisk's obesity drug Wegovy and diabetes drug Ozempic have been in short supply for months due to manufacturing issues and increased demand. Lilly's diabetes medication Trulicity has also been in tight supply, according to the drugmaker. That leaves tirzepatide, sold under the name Mounjaro. Lilly said in a statement that the drug is currently not in shortage, but that the company is continuing to monitor availability of competitor therapies and “supply with a focus on access for people with type 2 diabetes.” Related: Patients seeking novel weight loss drugs find a ‘wild west' of online prescribers In October, Lilly made changes to a discount program for the drug, now requiring people to attest they have type 2 diabetes. The coupons allowed patients to get the drug for $25 a month when it would otherwise cost about $1,000. Some pharmacies are also now checking if people have a diabetes diagnosis before filling prescriptions. https://www.statnews.com/2022/12/07/eli-lilly-tightens-access-tirzepatide-mounjaro-diabetes-obesity/ XX XX On the podcast next week.. yale lacrosse player Bri Carrasquillo was diagnosed just after her freshman year. Thomas Devore, candidate for Illinois Attorney General, spoke recently at the Crete Township Republican meeting on the dangers of the SAFE-T Act. During his presentation, he delivered a damning legal analysis of the Democrat's SAFE-T Act (HB 3653) , which will fully go into effect on January 1, 2023. Most Democrats voted YES and every single Republican voted NO. Devore warns that the ‘no-cash bail' provision in the SAFE-T Act opens up Illinois courts to civil rights violations. He points out the purpose of bail, and the reason that it is guaranteed in the constitution is to protect the rights of the accused, since citizens accused of a crime are presumed innocent until proven guilty in American courts. Despite the media's biased dupery, there are serious and sound reasons to object loudly to the SAFE-T Act. There are good reasons why 100 of 102 state's attorneys are opposed to the new cashless bail provisions, and there are good reasons why there are 58 lawsuits by these state's attorneys filed against Governor J.B. Pritzker and other state Democrats in an attempt to have it declared unconstitutional. In the upcoming November 8th election, we have an opportunity to repeal dozens of Democrat officials who supported this soft-on-crime approach. Many of these incumbents are also radically pro-abortion and sexual/moral/language anarchists. Mr. Liss is a graduate of the University of Illinois and the Loyola University of Chicago School of Law.In this episode, Carl White and Michael Liss discuss:Main benefits to franchising The main conflict on franchise relationshipsHow to become a franchisor Giving your franchise a chance  Key Takeaways: The main benefits of franchising is better business management and better marketing. The practitioner will benefit more on the system and the branding that franchisors provide so that the medical professional can just focus on doing what they do best. Franchisors have their own system, their own way of doing business. They would want the franchisee to stick to that system at all times. The conflict begins when the franchisee starts to deviate from the system or do things differently. In order to become a franchisor, you need to have established your brand's success. You need to have systems, a brand that's trademarked, and you need to be making a lot of money. You would also need to adopt a trainer or coach personality, because that is essentially what you'll be doing for your franchisees. When you buy a franchise, surrender to their system. You paid for it, might as well give it a chance to work. There are certain ways to do things efficiently and franchises have set up systems for a reason - because it worked for them.  “If you're a little too independent, a little too “my way” it's gonna be hard to implement somebody else's system. You have to want that. You're all in. Welcome to part two of Monte Larrick's conversation with David Shestokas, attorney and Republican candidate for Illinois Attorney General. In this Spotlight, the discussion turns to Governor Pritzker's abuse of his emergency powers and executive orders – a deliberate overreach that has been enabled by the legislature's abdication of their authority, as well as the failure of Kwame Raoul (the current Attorney General) to protect the public interests of the citizens of Illinois and to enforce the law set forth in the Illinois Emergency Management Agency Act. As counsel for Illinois Conservative Union, Mr. Shestokas speaks about ICU's efforts to access Illinois voter rolls in a useable format in order to eliminate the graveyard constituency and ensure election integrity. Mr. Shestokas also presents his position on parental rights, homeschooling, Christian private school education, and government school indoctrination. If you are interested in ensuring election integrity and eliminating voter fraud, you will certainly want to listen to this edition of Spotlight. Joining Monte Larrick on the podcast is David J. Shestokas, a former Cook County State's Attorney and current Republican candidate for Illinois Attorney General. In his position as counsel for Illinois Conservative Union (ICU), Shestokas is uniquely qualified to address the federal lawsuit ICU has filed against the Illinois State Board of Elections, as well as discuss various violations of the National Voter Registration Act and problems with mail-in balloting. If elected to the office of Illinois Attorney General, Mr. Shestokas promises to follow up on election irregularities and properly enforce voter laws. After the break, the conversation turns to Democrat efforts to federalize elections, ban voter ID requirements, limit political speech, and restore voting rights to felons and incarcerated criminals. Mr. Shestokas also emphasizes the need for election monitors and explains what concerned citizens can do to facilitate fair and clean elections.
