Historically Thinking: Conversations about historical knowledge and how we achieve it

This podcast originally dropped on December 17, 2015.  If we had the reverb and the talent, we'd introduce this week's podcast like one of those guys touting a monster truck event on "SUNDAY, SUNDAY, SUNDAY." Because this week we're talking about Big History–and calling it Big is actually kind of an understatement. That's because practitioners of Big History, like today's guest Craig Benjamin, begin a history survey not with Mesopotamia, or ancient China, or even homo sapiens squeaking past homo neanderthalis. No, they begin with the Big Bang...which happened quite some time before there were any humans around to enjoy the show. Big History says that, to understand human history--and humanity--it's first necessary to begin appreciating the size and complexity of the entire universe. In doing that, the argument goes, we will begin to improve ourselves morally and spiritually; or, failing that, we'll have a really fantastic general education course. Please note that these are two very different outcomes. With us to talk about these outcomes, and to give a lightning fast overview of Big History "from the Big Bang to you" is Craig Benjamin. He is associate professor of history at Grand Valley State University in Allendale, Michigan Craig is president (for just one-and-a-half more weeks, he tells me) of the World History Society; he's also a charter member of the International Big History Association. In fact, he's probably the second person ever to teach a course on Big History. As you'll hear, he's a great person to have a chat with; hope you enjoy it as much as we did. For Further Investigation The Big History Project: if you take the tests, you'll get a sticker. David Christian presents the history of the world in 18 minutes A definitive Big History Course, taught by Dr. David Christian Or how about these for a Christmas gift or two? With special guest: Dr David Christian… in conversation with Bill Kable It doesn’t get any bigger than this! In his book Origin Story: A Big History of Everything our guest David Christian traces human history arising from the Big Bang and going through to the first stars, our solar system, life on Earth, dinosaurs, homo sapiens, agriculture, an ice age, empires, fossil fuels, a moon landing and mass globalisation. And all this is done in the context of what it means to us and our families. This origin story is one of numerous such stories. Examples might include the Christian story of creation and the Aboriginal Dreamtime. Dr Christian’s story is based on the latest scientific findings and theories but it is told in a way that it can be related around a campfire or start discussions around the dinner table. What we hear is that story telling going back to the beginning is important to all of us. Podcast (mp3)

Today we have settled back into home, now being the dry season in Panamá. More wind which is definitely welcome, if this is our new winter I'm happy. ----- We dove a bit into the book Big History by David Christian, who has it as a Great Course HERE. Barely into the first lectures as we skimmed through was good enough to attempt at reaching at the gravity of our unimaginably short time frames here as humans in our present form, in our current ways of being societies. Seems so strange to know our entire ways of life for several generations will be looked at as yet another phase of existence, to one day be entirely different. ----- Take care and as always, Be Healthy Ya'll --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/berendzenbond/message

In this episode, historian, scholar of Russian history, professor emeritus and author David Christian joins us once again to talk about his new book Future Stories, a guide with a big-history perspective that helps us get prepared for the future. David Christian is the creator of Big History, a holistic and interdisciplinary approach that encompasses the history of human existence on a broad scale, from the Big Bang up to the present and the future. We dive deep into crucial patterns and processes that underlie everything and help us understand how to think about the future, what actions we must take to make this world a better place, as well as how and why we must collaborate better, improve our communication and share information better. If we connect the study of the past with the study of the future, we can start to imagine what the world will look like in the future and collaboratively look for solutions to the huge challenges ahead of us. The future is uncertain, a bit spooky, possibly dangerous, maybe wonderful. We cope with this never-ending uncertainty by telling stories about the future: future stories. How do we construct those stories? Where is the future, the place where we set those stories? Can we trust our future stories? And what sort of futures do they show us? David Christian is renowned for pioneering the emerging discipline of Big History, which surveys the whole of the past. In this conversation, he reveals what he thinks the future holds for our species. Shermer and Christian discuss: past patterns projected into the future • What is time and when do the past and future begin? • How long is the present “now”? • A-Series Time and B-Series Time • time as the 4th dimension • chaos theory and predicting the future • entropy, the Second Law of Thermodynamics, and the direction of time • general relativity and time • how we experience time psychologically and anthropologically • likelihood of outcomes and Bayesian probabilities • how organisms manage the future • how human organisms manage the future • how futurists think about the future • how people in the past thought about the future • the next 100, 1,000, and 10,000 years • the next million years, and the end of time. David Christian is a Professor Emeritus at Macquarie University, where he was formerly a Distinguished Professor of History and the director of the Big History Institute. In Psalms 42:5, David was feeling disquieted - inner tumult, depressed, and downtrodden. We feel like this too throughout our walk with Jesus. But when we feel like this - what do we do?  Do we stay in that place?  When feeling like this, King David said to himself wait a minute...I'm going to HOPE in God. That word hope means to be patient. David was like, I'm not going to stay in this place of feeling depressed or defeated. I will hope in God....He is my hope...He is my salvation...He's got my back. I will still praise HIM. We to have the same mindset. We have to remember we are in covenant with the Lord God almighty.

At the height of social distancing, David Christian (nee Feck) went solo. After 29 years as the chief wrangler of the ever-morphing indie pop act, the musician went to work on For Those We Met On The Way. It's been strange couple of years for the singer – as it has for most of us. Christian and family left London for the pastoral French countryside. A mostly quiet life, as he describes it, with the occasional bicycling through the rain. The pandemic has also seen him experimenting with new methods of releasing music, including a prolific Bandcamp output, populated with ideas and songs that didn't make it onto vinyl.

Did you know that any gold you own was formed from a star exploding? These are the things you learn when Professor David Christian teaches his 'Big History' - a history of humanity.  As a university lecturer Professor Christian pondered on how do we tell the story of the heritage of all humans with some of the grandeur and awe of the great national histories? He realised the human race needed an origin story - And if history is the past, how far back should you look for this origin story? You go all the way back. Curious about "Big History?" Dr. Robert Drury can help answer your questions; just come to three sessions at the Bainbridge Island Senior Center to learn more. Big History is an approach to history that takes in the whole scope of understood time – from the Big Bang to the present. David Christian, a Russian history scholar, coined the term, bringing in scientists, humanities professors, and people from a range of disciplines to help explain history in a unified way. This way of looking at history is less focused on human culture alone, and certainly less focused on the rise and fall of specific kingdoms and empires or outcomes of military conflicts. Christian's course attracted the attention of Bill Gates, who has supported efforts to put the project in front of high school students worldwide. Dr. Robert Drury is a psychologist, Bainbridge Island resident and an enthusiast for the Big History approach. He plans to use the online curriculum of Big History ( https://school.bighistoryproject.com/bhplive) to introduce interested people to the concept over the course of three Saturday sessions at the Bainbridge Island Senior Center. The presentations begin at noon on March 3, 10 and 17 and last 1 1/2 hours each. Please use the West Wing (Thrift Store) entrance. There's no cost to attend, but donations to the Senior Center are appreciated. Credits: BCB host: Reed Price; audio editor: Chris Walker; social media publisher Diane Walker.
