Deborah Conway speaks to SBS Shalom Australia about her new upcoming shows. Songs From The Book of Life is a work of musical theatre written by Deborah Conway & Willy Zygier, based around her memoir 'Book of Life', a shimmering piece of autobiography told in eight scenes, around eight songs with Conway and Zygier exploring the nature of performing, a musical life, the notions of what people know and don't know about a career lived over four decades in public.
Ahead of her show in Wagga on March 2, Deborah Conway joined Jamie & Leigh to chat about the Book of Life, both the book and the show. What advice would she give to her younger self, how is it writing an autobiography, why is it so good to tour with your partner? See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
Youth is the currency of the music industry and ageism is rife within it, but Deborah Conway believes you can make age work for you if you put a bit of creative thinking into the mix. During the 90s she was the 'it' girl of the Australian music scene. At the age of 64 she's still as creative, passionate, and fired up as she ever was and has recently released a memoir titled Book of Life. See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Melbourne-born sisters, Vika and Linda Bull, grew up singing at church, and were taught how to harmonize by their Tongan mother. The talented siblings first made their mark as members of Joe Camilleri's The Black Sorrows in the late 1980s, also providing backing vocals for other artists including Hunters and Collectors, Archie Roach, John Farnham, Deborah Conway, and Paul Kelly. In 1994 they left the band to launch their own career as a duo, releasing their debut self-titled album that same year. The album was produced by Kelly, and peaked at No. 7 on the ARIA Albums Chart, reaching certified platinum and nominated for an ARIA Music Award in 1995 for 'Breakthrough Artist – Album'. Vika and Linda had four singles, “Hard Love”, "We've Started a Fire", "When Will You Fall For Me", and "House of Love”, the latter two were featured as backing music on the soap opera, Home and Away. The pair have since had near-inseparable careers, releasing eight studio albums and twenty-one singles, collaborating closely with the likes of Paul Kelly, Diesel and Renée Geyer and cementing their place as national musical treasure. Vika and Linda have a long and decorated music career, with constant critical acclaim, including four ARIA Award nominations for Best Adult Contemporary Album, a Special Recognition Award at the Pacific Music Awards, and performed the national anthem at the AFL Grand Final. In 2019 they were inducted into the Music Victoria Hall of Fame and in 2020, their retrospective album 'Akilotoa: Anthology (1994-2006) entered the Australian charts at number one, making Vika and Linda the first Australian female duo to debut at No. 1. They are currently finalists for the Artistic Excellence Award at the 2023 Australian Women in Music Awards. Their music has traversed genres over the past three decades, incorporating rock, country, gospel, reggae, R&B, soul and blues, as well as paying tribute to their rich Tongan heritage.

As vocalist of Do-Ré-Mi and as a solo artist, Deborah Conway has received critical acclaim and mainstream success, but in this wide-ranging interview, the singer/songwriter reveals her music career hasn't always been smooth sailing. From the unexpected success of Do-Ré-Mi's debut single for Virgin Records, "Man Overboard" — a song without a chorus — to the detour into a solo dance project that mostly remains locked away in the record company vault to that time in the early 2000s when she and musical and life partner Willy Zygier played in fans' lounge rooms, Deborah's story is one with surprising twists and turns. For every up, like her ARIA Award win for debut solo album String Of Pearls (which included hits "It's Only The Beginning" and "Under My Skin"), there's the tale of Do-Ré-Mi being pressured to go more pop on second album The Happiest Place In Town (which featured top 30 single "Adultery"). It's all delivered with Deborah's renowned dry wit and sharp sense of humour.Bonus material at chartbeats.com.au/aussieTwitter: @ChartBeatsAU, @TurnAroundOnJoyInstagram: @chartbeatsau, @joyturnbeataroundEmail: chartbeats.au@gmail.com
As important as the fictional story of The Takeaways was to the success of Sweet And Sour, an equally crucial factor was the show's soundtrack. Johanna Pigott and Graham "Buzz" Bidstrup (formerly of The Angels and The Party Boys) talk us through the process of reaching out to the cream of Australia's songwriters for material to include in the show. Both Johanna and Buzz also contributed songs themselves, and the latter tells us about joining forces with three other writers who he'd go on to form GANGgajang with. We also hear from Sharon O'Neill about how the ups and downs of her career up until that point influenced the lyrics of title track "Sweet And Sour", while Deborah Conway recounts how she was recruited to provide the singing voice of The Takeaways' lead singer, Carol, and why she requested that her involvement stay as anonymous as possible. Finally, series producer (and future producer of The Piano, Lantana and many more movies) Jan Chapman reflects on her role bringing the series to air and why she considers it a career highlight.
At 6pm on July 2, 1984, a new ABC series debuted and would go on to become one of the most popular shows aired on the national broadcaster all decade. Created by Johanna Pigott and Tim Gooding, both former members of punk band XL Capris, Sweet And Sour depicted the rise and fall of fictional group The Takeaways. In this first episode in a two-part special, Johanna shares her memories of being in XL Capris and how that experience formed the basis for Sweet And Sour. She reveals the false start the series had and discusses the process of creating the show a generation of Australians watched again and again in the mid-'80s. We also talk to three of the cast members: Tracy Mann, who played singer Carol Howard; David Reyne, who brought his existing music industry knowledge to the role of guitarist Martin Kabel; and Ric Herbert, the man behind human whirlwind Darrell Winters, The Takeaways' manager. In the upcoming Part 2, we'll take a closer look at the music in Sweet And Sour and hear from Deborah Conway, Sharon O'Neill and Graham "Buzz" Bidstrup about their contributions to the soundtrack.

I'm going to let you in on a little secret. Making a good record. Is really hard… There are so many choices to make… Think about it? Which song do you record? Which studio? What band? What are you having for lunch? The options are endless! And what if this album would be the first, in 17 years. Todays guest are Vika & Linda - one of Australia's most iconic vocal duos. Pathologic Classic HD 02. (Season -08 episode -10). Pathologic episode two listeners! I'm slowly understanding more! Very slowly. So the thumbnail... At some point it was inevitable I'd need to start spending a bit less time on these things. so, there you have it. Ugh. Now that I look at it.. That guy on the right looks like he's waving a big trash bag above his head. Boy I sure fucked that up. It's actually supposed to be a hunk of rock sat in the field several meters beyond the misogynistic mob. Hrrg. Well I guess come take my degree away huh, all those years of artschool were for nothing. Musics in this episode were: "Welcome to the Blue House" and "And to All a Goodnight" both from Bear in the Big Blue House, and "It's Only The Beginning" by Deborah Conway. Also several samples of harp music by David Snell were used in this episode AND in the last episode too. I forgot to mention it last ep though, sorry. Sorry Dave! If only there was an edit button, huh!

Back in 2004, Andrew Stafford published a book called Pig City. It captured the Brisbane music scene, the politics that fuelled this artistic reaction and so much more. From the Saints to Savage Garden, it became a bible in music history. Fifteen years passed, and Staffo finally returned with his follow up. This time a personal memoir, taking us through the life of a quiet fan who always felt on the outside, until he found music. Something to Believe In is it's title, and when I heard it was being published, I knew I wanted Staffo to Take 5. His theme was simple. Songs to believe in; the music that had been a saviour in his life. From Ramones to Do Ré Mi, Jen Cloher to Television, this is a heartfelt walk through a true fan's life. Ramones - 'Something To Believe In' Do Ré Mi - 'Man Overboard' Jen Cloher - 'Hold My Hand' Motörhead - '(We Are) The Road Crew' Television - 'Marquee Moon'

I’m doing things a little bit differently for episode 44 of Love That Album. Rather than co hosting with a fellow fan of a particular album, I’ve gone straight to the source and am chatting with the musicians concerned. February this year saw the latest release from Australian singer songwriters Deborah Conway and Willie Zygier. They’ve been making wonderful albums for years, but with "Stories of Ghosts", they’ve just upped the ante. “Stories of Ghosts” is heaven for fans of brilliant songwriters – an ironic description considering the subject matter for the album is an exploration of their Jewish heritage from an atheist’s perspective. Make no mistake, however – this album is not about following a Richard Dawkins agenda, nor is it bitter like Andy Partridge’s “Dear God.” These songs cover topics like hope, disappointment, and anger – themes that anyone can relate to – believer and non-believer alike. Deborah and Willie were fascinating interview subjects, and I hope you’ll enjoy our conversation. Song samples are included. NOTE: There were audio issues in the recording of this interview, but is still listenable overall. A good headphone listen. Eric Reanimator’s “Album I Love” segment features him talking about a metal band (I told you this was a different type of episode), The Galactic Cowboys and their album “Machine Fish”. Their album delves into questions of troubled faith, making it a perfect accompaniment to the Conway / Zygier album. …and for those of you who are concerned about how long these LTA shows run, this one is only a tad over an hour. Perfect for your work commute. You can download the podcast at iTunes by searching for “love that album”. You can stream or download it at “http://lovethatalbum.blogspot.com”.
