Olive Oil: The Foundation Of The Mediterranean Diet, with Yonca Tokbaş and Ayşen Gilroy

In this episode of Dia-Logue: The Diapoint Podcast, Pam speaks with Yonca Tokbaş and Ayşen Gilroy about the foundation of the Mediterranean diet, olive oil.   They discuss everything from harvesting to production, storage, and how to use it.   Ayşen Gilroy is a passionate olive oil entrepreneur with a profound love for the Aegean Region's liquid gold. Her and her family-owned olive oil business journey began with a deep appreciation for olive oil's rich history, health benefits, and culinary versatility.   Their journey began with a small grove and a dream, and today, their olive oil is celebrated for its impeccable taste and uncompromising quality. Their dedication to excellence was recently recognized when The Gilroy's was awarded the prestigious Gold Medal at the 16th National Natural Cold Pressed Olive Oil Competition organized by The Friends of Olives Association. This is a testament to the uncompromising quality and exceptional taste of their olive oil.   But that's not all. Ayşen's talents extend beyond the olive groves. She's also a culinary virtuoso, she is an amazing chef and the creative force behind The Gilroy Cookbook https://www.instagram.com/thegilroycookbook/?hl=en - a guide to beautiful healthy food and entertaining. This was created from her experience as a chef and owner of a boutique cafe.     Yonca Tokbaş's love of olive trees and olive oil comes from her grandfather who owned olive groves and produced olive oil in the Muğla region in Turkey. The ancient, wise and natural way of communal work for the olive oil business inspired many of her passions and for her to continue this journey.   She started her own olive oil brand and business 10 years ago in her small garden, with just 10 olive trees. With a certification in Permaculture Design, she now owns a grove in Şenköy, which is a Turkish village famous for its organic olive groves.   Her 2022 olive oil was awarded a gold medal and the 2023 harvest olive oil special series named HOPE has a record level of 1,041 polyphenol.   Aysen and Yonca are both partner members of Bafa Natural Life Agricultural Production and Marketing Cooperative which was founded in 2019 to bring together the agricultural power and unique ecosystem of the region under the roof of a new-generation production cooperative.       Join the Diapoint mailing list for exclusive insights, offers and diabetes wisdom.   Visit the D-Shop where we offer beautiful, practical diabetes supplies and lifestyle accessories.   The Ultimate T1D Game Plan: A game-changing home study program for parents of school-aged children with Type 1 Diabetes.   Diabetes resources.   Looking for health support? In this episode, we'll dive into the thought-provoking, controversial world of using diabetes drugs for weight loss.   It all started when Dr. Oz, an American talk show host, introduced Ozempic, a medication designed for diabetes management, to the world back in 2021 as a solution for weight loss. Since then it has become very popular. The promise of shedding pounds effortlessly led to a surge in demand that eventually caused a shortage of the drug.   We're going deeper into the story and learn what's behind this frenzy, and more importantly, what are the potential risks and rewards?   In today's episode, we have a special guest, Ali Hashemi, the Co-founder of meta[bolic] and GluCare.Health, to help us unravel the mysteries of using diabetes drugs for weight loss.   Society is on the hunt for a magic pill, a shortcut to the body they desire. New Year, New Noise! The new year is full of messages and advertisements that you should hate yourself or your life. Don't! Goal-setting on January 1st is not necessary! Sometimes it's not even fun! Your first mission for this year is to love the person you were last year and do healthy things that are available to you – and most of them free – to improve your health. Health and wellness are not only for the elite and the wealthy. They are for everyone. There are things we can do that are free to support our health. Eat wholesome foods. Less is more. Sleep well. Drink water. Move – it doesn't have to be in a fancy gym, or a big lofty goal. Just move. No screens before bedtime. Even washing your hands regularly helps! In addition to these new year tips, Pam shares a little bit about where she was in her own goal setting after her burnout and exhaustion at the end of a successful 2022. The moral of the story: Give yourself the permission to be human and love yourself throughout the year. Stay focussed on living healthy and well. This is self-love. We talk to the inventor of the Genteel Lancing Device, and the President of Genteel LLC, Dr Chris Jacobs. This broad discussion spans the history of diabetes, the research and development that goes into diabetes innovation, even the psychology of pain! In early 2006, Dr Jacob's friend, who has Type 2 diabetes, called to say he was at his “wit's end” with the pain of lancing his fingertips. He begged Dr Jacobs to help. Over the next ten years, Dr Jacobs analyzed the interconnection between blood capillaries and pain nerves, limitations of current devices, and existing technologies that could bring painless lancing to reality, until Genteel finally evolved into the precision instrument it is today, with the ability to optimize blood draw with absolutely no discomfort. The Genteel Lancing Device is the world's only lancing device that uses vacuum suction to draw blood.  It is reliable, pain-free and FDA cleared for alternate site testing. Glucose testing with the Genteel Lancing Device can be done on other areas of the body, including palms, forearms, and thighs, giving fingers a break! And it can be used with almost any blood glucose meter or test strip. Diabetes is most likely not going away any time soon, despite the intensity of research time and dollars put into finding a cure, but we have the ability to make it less traumatic, more hopeful, and less financially burdensome. Genteel can make that difference. Its technology simply has to be experienced to be believed!
