Oprah Winfrey has declared that the Oprah Winfrey Leadership Academy for Girls (OWLAG) in South Africa will officially cease operations at the conclusion of the 2027 academic year. This decision signifies the end of a two-decade-long residential boarding model as Winfrey redirects her philanthropic efforts towards a more extensive, nationwide scholarship initiative. The 52-acre, state-of-the-art campus located in Henley-on-Klip will be transferred to the Gauteng Department of Education. This handover is in accordance with the original partnership agreement established at the time of the school's construction.Students who are currently enrolled and will not graduate by the 2027 closure date will be awarded full scholarships to continue their education at other prestigious institutions, ensuring uninterrupted financial support.Since its inception in January 2007, with an initial investment of $40 million, the academy has graduated over 500 to 1,000 disadvantaged, academically gifted girls. Many of these graduates have proceeded to attend elite universities worldwide and have secured prominent careers. As stated by the academy, the primary aim of this transition is to enhance educational access. Operating a single luxury residential boarding school requires substantial resources. By shifting to a broader national scholarship program, Winfrey's foundation anticipates funding academically talented girls across various leading South African institutions, effectively doubling the number of students they can assist.Numerous fans and commentators have expressed their sadness over the closure of the physical boarding school, which has served as a beacon of hope and legacy for two decades. Supporters, however, have embraced the strategic change, highlighting that a distributed scholarship model can significantly increase the number of young women receiving educational support.Reassurance Over Continuity: Audiences have responded positively to the commitment that current students will have their education fully funded until graduation, and that local authorities will maintain the campus as an operational school.

Every now and then I try to think about my top ten Tom Petty deep cuts. There are so many that I love and that I've discovered, rediscovered, or come to appreciate so much more as I've been on this podcast journey, but Down South is at the very top table for me in that regard. Going down south for the first time to the Tom Petty Weekend last year made this song resonate doubly with me. Not only does it tap into that connection I have with going home myself, but heading to Gainesville and feeling the bones of the place, I feel this song in a very different way. Here we are at Snowball in Stockholm, sitting with Lindsey Ngo and Krystel Chevallier for an opposite of a small-talk. We had an open-hearted conversation about how swing dancing can become a place of belonging.Krystel shares how she began dancing balboa ten years ago in Australia and how the dance community stepped into her life at a moment when she felt alone after her divorce. Dancing became the thing that stopped her mind from overthinking, the thing that made her feel alone. She talks about the partnership side of swing dancing, the joy of building Jurassic Bal event, and the sweet story of her future life partner taking a photo of her at her first dance event, in a moment of pure joy and that he later printed for her.Lindsey came to Australia from the USA ten years ago and found her way into dancing six years back. She now helps run a small but warm local scene of about fifty dancers. For her, dancing began with loving the music as a kid, and it is the moment when she feels fully present. She shares a beautiful memory from a no shoe event, dancing softly to the music of Jessie Gordon and Mark Turner, in a room so quiet it felt almost magical. They both share inspiring tips & stories, and answer Kristyna's question from the previous episode about their very first memories of dancing swing.Subscribe & ReviewFollow the podcast and leave a review to help me grow

The Traditional first week of November rut was foreign to me until I actually hunted the Midwest. As a resident Mississippian, that hallowed week looks a lot like the month of October. Unless we get a cold front, temps might even reach the mid-80s. For me and my southern counterparts, New Year's Day typically aligns with peak rut activity. Of course, the South is a weird place, and that includes deer hunting. Depending on where you're at, you...

This week, in Edwards, Mississippi, a terribly murdered body is found, stuffed inside of hog feed container, on a rural farm. This leads police to hunt for the man who was last seen with the woman, but he has already moved on to other horrific acts, including brutally killing his aunt, and attacking a stranger with a knife. His demeanor in court is absolutely wild, as he screams at the jury & judge, while giving the middle finger to prosecutors. Will he be held responsible? Along the way, we find out that cactus farming doesn't just happen in Arizona, that no matter how horrible your childhood may be, you know not to kill people that you just met, and that screaming obsenities at everyone at your murder trial, may not endear you to a jury!!
