Join us as Elizabeth Stuart from Crossing Creeks Farm shares her enlightening transition to grass-based livestock production and how her family's pursuit of health through better quality meat led them to start their own farming venture. Elizabeth's candid recount of their journey from vegetarianism to grass-fed beef enthusiasts, alongside their commitment to regenerative grazing practices, provides a compelling narrative that resonates with anyone interested in sustainable agriculture and personal wellness. In our discussion, Elizabeth reveals the thoughtful steps they took to ensure their farming operations were not only environmentally responsible but also capable of leaving a lasting legacy for generations to come.As we explore the nitty-gritty of starting and expanding a farm, Elizabeth imparts valuable strategies that were instrumental in the growth of Crossing Creeks Farm. From the strategic placement of over 7,000 feet of water lines to the choice of electrified fencing, we get an insider's look at the importance of efficient infrastructure. Balancing farm duties with off-farm jobs, she highlights how initial investments in systems like fencing and watering can pave the way for long-term success. Her insights on diversification through the addition of other species, and the implementation of direct-to-consumer models, underline the resilience and adaptability needed to sustain a profitable farm store year-round.In the final stretch of our conversation, Elizabeth offers advice on maintaining livestock health through natural practices, emphasizing the power of mineral management learned from Pat Colby's methodologies. As we chat about the daily operations and the utility of farm tools, the message is clear: starting small and dreaming big is key for those embarking on their farming path. Whether you're a seasoned farmer or just starting out, this episode is packed with practical tips, inspiring stories, and an invitation to engage with a community passionate about regenerative farming and the grass beneath our feet.Links mentioned in the episode:Crossing Creeks FarmCrossing Creeks Farm on FacebookCrossing Creeks Farm on InstagramNoble Research InstituteGrazing Grass InsidersGrazing Grass Community

On a chilly December morning in 1977, Mary Elizabeth Stuart packed up her two young children for a busy day of errands in nearby Eureka, California. But Mary and her daughters would never make it home. It's been 46 years since that mysterious day and as the case grows cold, it leaves behind only more burning questions and a smokescreen of distraction and deceit. Sometimes, no matter what point you start from, it always leads you right back to your own front door. Listen to the full episode on PATREON
More than three years after COVID first shuttered schools, researchers are taking stock of how children are doing academically. Hopkins biostatistician Elizabeth Stuart speaks with Stephanie Desmon about their research about learning gaps and why it's so important to invest in regaining lost ground while still letting kids be kids. She also explains how this data can help inform difficult policy decisions like school closures in the event of another public health emergency.
'Parthenia or the Maydenhead of the first musicke that ever was printed for the Virginalls (in England at least), composed by three famous masters: William Byrd, Dr. John Bull and Orlando Gibbons' was probably printed in 1613 probably as part of the celebrations for a royal wedding. MIO's Artistic Director John Edwards talks to Prof. Deanne Williams about the plays by Shakespeare, Beaumont and Fletcher and others, and masque performances during the run up to the marriage of Frederick, Count Palatine and Elizabeth Stuart. We then hear Louise Hung perform music by Bull and Gibbons from the book.

A person I had always wanted to get to know Dr. Elizabeth Stuart, a professor at Johns Hopkins in their biostatistics department. I knew about her for a long time before I met her because of her expansive work on a variety of issues in the area of “matching” and unconfoundedness. She did her PhD, as it turned out, at Harvard at the end of the 1990s and early 2000s around the time when Guido Imbens was still there in the economics department, and Don Rubin in the statistics department. At Harvard she worked with people like Don Rubin, her dissertation adviser, as well as Gary King, one of her collaborators and someone else I've interviewed on the podcast, and so I wanted to talk to her to try and piece together more of the progression of causal inference throughout the social sciences in the late 20th and early 21st century, not just through writing, but maybe even moreso through students and faculty placements at departments around the world. But these big ideas are in many ways just the “hook”, as I have said, to build a mental map of why I select certain people for the podcast. Dr. Stuart is an important scholar in her own right. She has spent a career being driven by questions about health and selected into statistics as a way of enhancing her own ability to contribute fruitfully to large and important policy questions regarding health. After graduating from Harvard in 2004, she went to Mathematica before then moving to Johns Hopkins school of public health where she steadily moved forward through tenure to associate then full professor. She is now a professor in the department of mental health, the department of biostatistics, and the department of health policy and management at Johns Hopkins. And she is now leading up pioneering new curriculum options for students there as well as moving into a new administrative position within the university.I learned things I didn't know, such as her brief flirtation with going to Princeton's economics program (the economics students, though, seemed miserable so she opted against it). Since I've been also obsessed with trying to better understand Princeton's economics program throughout the 1970s to 1990s, I was surprised to again realize what a small world it was that Dr. Stuart herself skipped over that like a stone over water before landing at the center of the causal inference universe itself — Harvard's statistics department. So this was a fun interview. And I hope you enjoy learning more about Dr. Stuart's life. In the last episode we learned about Elizabeth Stuart, Queen of Bohemia, and in that episode there was reference made to her daughter Sophia. This season I'll be presenting Sophia's book, Memoirs of Sophia, Electress of Hanover 1630-1680. But, as noted by our last guest Professor Dr Nadine Akkerman, this book is written as satire, and should be taken as such. -- Images of people Sophia mentions in her writings: Elizabeth Stuart, daughter of James VI/I and Queen of Bohemia; Portrait as a widow. Kicking off our third pandemic summer looks a lot different than the last two….or does it? With more than five times as many COVID cases as this time last year, have we given up on trying to protect ourselves? What should we be focusing on, and does this mean we're truly learning to live with COVID? Experts Keri Althoff and Elizabeth Stuart return to the podcast to talk with Stephanie Desmon about where we are this pandemic summer, what's changed, what hasn't, and where we might be headed.
Elizabeth Stuart, Queen of Bohemia- the Scottish princess born in Dunfermline who could have become Elizabeth I of Scotland and II of England is the subject of Dr Nadine Akkerman's book. Susan Morrison asks Nadine how close to the thrones of Britain this remarkable woman got and about her sometimes stormy relationship with her brother, the future Charles I. Leaping ahead in time, we hit the railways and discover the perils of scoffing on your commute Dickensian-style. Chloe Shields of the University of Strathclyde has the low down on fashionable Victorian maladies and the dining car.
John J. Miller is joined by Claudia Stokes of Trinity University to discuss Elizabeth Stuart Phelps's 'The Gates Ajar.'
Epidemiologist Keri Althoff and mental health expert Elizabeth Stuart return to the podcast to talk us through yet another phase of the pandemic. They speak with Stephanie Desmon about where we are now and why there are reasons to be cautiously optimistic, how families can navigate mask-wearing, the CDC's new approach to monitoring risks, and why the COVID response is a dial, not an “on/off switch.”
In Women's History Month we take a look back at a figure who has been misrepresented by successive generations of historians. Elizabeth Stuart, was the goddaughter of Elizabeth I and sister of the ill-starred Charles I of England. She was someone who played an active part on the times in which she lived. In this episode the Dutch historian Nadine Akkerman takes us back to meet a woman who was known as ‘The Queen of Hearts.' In her riveting new book, Elizabeth Stuart, Queen of Hearts, Nadine Akkerman draws back the curtain on centuries of hearsay and prejudice to reveal Elizabeth's life in its full, extraordinary glory. This was a woman of great courage and intelligence, who ruled alongside her husband, guided their children after his death, played a vital role in contemporary politics, travelled extensively, wrote letters voraciously and hunted wild boar while eight months' pregnant. Who knows how the seventeenth century would have turned out if she had acceded to the throne of England in 1625 instead of her hapless brother Charles I. She was, in so many ways, the true successor of her namesake and godmother, Queen Elizabeth I. Show Notes Scene One: Elizabeth all alone in Prague, refusing to abandon her subjects, while her husband is with the army. Scene Two: The lunch before the battle of White Mountain. Her husband is in Prague and Elizabeth wants to visit the troops. They realize they are too late – battle has already begun. Scene Three: Heavily pregnant, Elizabeth flees from Prague in search of a safe haven where she can give birth. Memento: Elizabeth's ‘pacquet de nuit'; the one item the enemy (i.e. the Duke of Bavaria) managed to take from her during the flight. Ambassadors later try to get it back, so it must have been important to her. Previous biographers have translated it as ‘nightclothes'. I can't imagine that to be correct, but I don't know what it is either! As a contribution to International Women's Day last Tuesday, this episode of Not Just the Tudors is a tribute to one of the great - but largely forgotten - Queens of the Early Modern period.Elizabeth Stuart may only be vaguely recalled today as the sister of King Charles I, the grandmother of King George I, and thus a direct ancestor of our current Queen. But in her lifetime, as the deposed and exiled Queen of Bohemia, Elizabeth was a formidable figure, operating at the epicentre of the political and military struggles that defined 17th century Europe. Professor Suzannah Lipscomb talks to Dr. Nadine Akkerman, whose deep immersion in the archives and masterful detective work, has brought Elizabeth Stuart to life as a canny stateswoman and possessor of a sharp wit, cherished in the hearts of her compatriots.

Elizabeth Stuart was beloved by Protestants and Catholics, English and Scots alike. Many clamoured for her to replace her brother, Charles I, on the throne, and one admirer even commissioned a treasonous painting of her wearing the Tudor crown. Nadine Akkerman speaks to Rhiannon Davies about this fascinating and now largely forgotten figure. Coming into this holiday season, things seemed a lot brighter than they did a year ago in terms of COVID safety: We have a broader toolbox including masks, ventilation, rapid tests, vaccines, and more. But a new variant of concern and rising levels of transmission remind us that we are still in a pandemic. Epidemiologist Keri Althoff and mental health expert Elizabeth Stuart return to the podcast to talk with Stephanie Desmon about navigating holiday gatherings and travel this year, and how we're slowly moving towards the ultimate goal of living with COVID as an endemic virus.
