Join Sean and tech whiz, Melissa Kwan, as they unravel the allure and struggles of bootstrapping startups. Melissa dives into founding eWebinar and transforming pains into gains, all while crafting a business that perfectly suits her digital nomad lifestyle. She drops valuable gems on pricing pitfalls and the underrated power of slow growth. Don't miss these candid confessions! Here are a few of the topics we'll discuss on this episode of Product Launch Podcast:Bootstrapping is a lifestyle, not just finance.Price on value, not just to compete.Growth is slow and steady, not instant.Solving personal problems can fuel success.Grandfathered pricing can be a trap.Resources:eWebinarNxtStepPodcast ChefConnect with Melissa Kwan:LinkedInConnect with our host, Sean Boyce:LinkedInEmailQuotables:13:33 - Sean: So I'd love to hear you talk a little bit about why that strategy makes the most sense for you and how it compares to basically whatever type of situation you may have found yourself in if you were fundraising instead.Melissa: Yeah so my first company was Bootstraps because I didn't know that raising money existed so this was 13 years ago like all the tech stars and Y Combinators came after that like shortly after that. But like you know I'm from Vancouver so it wasn't a big tech community right back then it was just meetups and then I guess along the way I learned that you know people raise money and build companies on other people's money which actually seemed pretty cool at the time but I didn't really understand that concept.5:44 - I think when you build a company it becomes so much of your life and you're spending so much time on it that you have to start with what makes you happy first. And that's what I didn't do in my previous two startups I was like this is an idea it makes money, let's do this. But for 10 years I was always discontented and frustrated because I didn't start from a place of love I guess, like and love for myself.05:48 - So coming to eWebinar I didn't choose eWebinar as a business. I really sat down and I wrote 10 non-negotiables that I had to have in my next business so things that made me happy. For example, I have to have a completely remote team of contractors because I know I'm not really great at managing people hiring and firing and having those tough conversations I wanted a product that could be sold 100% through the internet I was so sick of going to conferences and sitting at booths and doing face-to-face meetings.03:10 - So I ended up living the problem of doing you know repetitive trainings and onboardings and always wondered why there wasn't an incredible product that solved that problem. And I think being able to build a company that solves a problem that I know so well and one that I feel really connected to because you know freedom has always been my number one priority and that was a problem that was restricting me from living my life cause I was also also digital nomadding.08:30 - And if you think about those things like Alibaba, for example, was like the eBay of China right. They didn't need to show the world eBay was successful eBay was already successful, like Word for example was not the first Word software so it's kind of along the same line. So I think first is like make sure it's something that makes you happy that you want to work on and especially if you're a bootstrap company don't go and try and start a blue ocean opportunity unless you know exactly what you're up against. Find something that you know you can improve and make that your business and you can probably cut down on at least two or three years of trying to get something new out there on the market. You might recognize today's guest as Josh from the hit Nickelodeon show Drake and Josh, or maybe you've seen his hilarious, viral social media videos. Josh Peck has recently added another accolade to the list: published author! We discuss the inspiration behind his memoir Happy People Are Annoying and why he wanted to write a self-help book from the perspective of someone who is still trying to figure it all out. He reflects on some pivotal moments in his life, how his relationship with acting has changed since his days as a child star, and how he nurtures a sense of curiosity and gratitude in his everyday life. IN THIS EPISODE, WE TALK ABOUT: What keeps Josh motivated and present, particularly as an actor Accepting that everything will work out, just maybe not in the way that you thought it would How Josh has redefined what confidence looks and feels like to him The importance of working hard, but also taking care of yourself in the process Josh's go-to tools for combatting his need for certainty RESOURCES Get your copy of Josh's book, Happy People Are Annoying Thanks to Issuu for supporting Earn Your Happy. He's starred in feature films such as Mean Creek alongside Rory Culkin (2004), The Wackness beside Ben Kingsley (2008), Red Dawn alongside Chris Hemsworth (2012), Danny Collins with Al Pacino, Annette Benning, and Jennifer Garner (2016), Take The 10 with Andy Samberg and Fred Armisen (2017), Netflix's The Musical, co-starring Debra Messing, out later this year, and much more. Currently, Josh is in Disney Plus' Turner and Hooch series, a continuation of the 1989 Tom Hanks film of the same name. You can next see Josh Peck in the highly anticipated Hulu series, How I Met Your Father, and in the iCarly Reboot on Paramount+. Josh is best known for his role on the Nickelodeon phenomenon Drake & Josh (2004-2007) for which he received a Kids' Choice Nomination. The series premiere was watched by 3.2 million viewers, Nickelodeon's highest-rated series premiere in nearly 10 years. In 2006, Drake & Josh ranked consistently among the 10 most-watched cable shows of the week. It averaged three million viewers at the time.
#997: Josh Peck is an actor, comedian, podcaster, and social media star who has held lead roles in iconic television shows like 'Drake and Josh' on Nickelodeon, as well as 'Grandfathered' with John Stamos on FOX, and now 'Turner and Hooch' the series on Disney+. Josh has a new book out that I don't think anyone but me would say is gritty, and I'll say why at the top of the show. The book is titled Happy People Are Annoying, and I'd add that people who write as wittily as he does are also kind of annoying to me, but the laughs and the heart overcompensate for my envy. Through the recounting of a difficult life, Josh showcases insight that is almost easy to brush over, but we're going to dig in today and help us all question our perspectives during challenges that help or hurt us. That's why he's here, his self-awareness that we can learn from.. You can find Happy People Are Annoying…everywhere. Which is kind of annoying. You can also find Josh on Instagram along with 13.3 million other people. A few more than I have. Also annoying… Advertising Inquiries: https://redcircle.com/brandsPrivacy & Opt-Out: https://redcircle.com/privacy

Whether it's Blackie, Jocko, Stamos, or John, Tony Gates or any of the broadway characters he's portrayed, General Hospital, Full House, Fuller House, Fullest House (just kidding there was no "Fullest House"), Grandfathered, ER, Big Shot , he's on Disney plus he's on Netflix and his TV commercials are some of his best work.... he's everywhere....visiting with John Stamos is like visiting with one of the most successful everythings of our time...and we've basically known him via our own brother John forever. He's like this true family friend. Anyway enough of John but his career though right? Where do you start? What do you focus on? So we just decided let's just visit with him and certainly questions will arise during the visit and maybe we'll even ask him something he's never been asked. Coming up...the Box Tops!
Austin Texas specially regulates signs that advertise things that are not located on the same premises as the sign and signs that direct people to offsite locations (off-premises signs). Its sign code prohibited the construction of new off-premises signs. Grandfathered off-premises signs could remain in their existing locations but could not be altered in ways that increased their nonconformity. On-premises signs were not similarly restricted. Advertisers, denied permits to digitize some billboards, argued that the prohibition against digitizing off-premises signs, but not on-premises signs, violated the First Amendment. The district court upheld the code. The Fifth Circuit reversed, finding the distinction "facially content-based" because an official had to read a sign's message to determine whether it was off-premises. The Supreme Court reversed, rejecting the view that any examination of speech or expression inherently triggers heightened First Amendment concern. Restrictions on speech may require some evaluation of the speech and nonetheless remain content-neutral. The on-/off-premises distinction is facially content-neutral; it does not single out any topic or subject matter for differential treatment. A sign's message matters only to the extent that it informs the relative location. The on-/off-premises distinction is more like ordinary time, place, or manner restrictions, which do not trigger strict scrutiny. Content-based regulations are those that discriminate based on the topic discussed or the idea or message expressed. The Court remanded, noting that evidence that an impermissible purpose or justification underpins a facially content-neutral restriction may mean that the restriction is nevertheless content-based and, to survive intermediate scrutiny, a restriction on speech or expression must be “narrowly tailored to serve a significant governmental interest.” --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/scotus-opinions/support
