A rock opera about the Columbia Gorge watershed comes to life

When you think about the Columbia Gorge, a multimedia rock opera might not be the first thing that comes to mind. But that’s exactly the vehicle producer Sarah Fox chose to showcase the unique history, personal stories and ecology of the Gorge.  “The Watershed Rock Opera” unfolds in five movements that symbolize the cycle of the watershed itself. The journey starts in the clouds, descends into the Cascades and moves through a pear orchard before it ends in a kind of homecoming at the mighty river that connects the people and communities who call the Gorge home. (There’s also a comedic detour and duet prompted by a clogged toilet).   Fox recorded interviews with five storytellers who provided the narration in the rock opera and inspired its musical score, which 20 local musicians and performers will bring to life this Friday for a series of sold-out shows at the Columbia Center for the Arts in Hood River. Fox joins us for more details, along with Lesley Tamura, a fourth-generation pear orchardist in Hood River, composer and arranger Eric Kaneda and music director and percussionist Leila Kaneda.

Since being diagnosed with bipolar 1 disorder, Sarah Fox has made it her mission to break down the stigma surrounding mental health. She is the host of the Rough Edges podcast, which provides tools for mental health education and examines the intersection between faith and mental health. Sarah's faith journey has been an integral part of her bipolar journey, in fact her diagnosis initially triggered a crisis of faith that she has since overcome. In January of 2021, Sarah experienced a severe manic episode. This involved disruptions in her sleep, incoherent thoughts and psychosis, with both auditory and visual hallucinations. Her memories of this time are hazy, but she does remember feeling a powerful sense of euphoria, like she was on top of the world. As this manic episode increased in intensity Sarah became aggressive, at which point her family decided to have her hospitalized. During her three week stay in the hospital Sarah was diagnosed with bipolar disorder, and the severity of her manic episode qualified her as type 1. In this episode of the Major Pain podcast, Sarah discusses how her bipolar diagnosis transformed her life, initially turning her world upside down. Her prior knowledge of bipolar had a negative connotation due to poor representation in popular media, and to be diagnosed with this disease triggered not only a crisis of faith but also an identity crisis. She suddenly had to re-contextualize everything she thought about herself, but the resulting transformation has brought her to a place of stability in both her bipolar journey and her faith. Through her mental health advocacy work she endeavors to spread a message of hope, proving it is possible to thrive with bipolar. Many contracts can be really complicated, especially the ones used in industries like construction. They are known to be long and complex, making them difficult to understand and comply with. These contracts are often designed by a lawyer for another lawyer, with potential disputes in mind. This kind of contracting doesn't really support the end user in their daily activities so it's time to make changes! The field of contract design is dedicated to transforming these kinds of risk-averse and lawyer-centric contracting practices. It promotes a more proactive and user-centric approach to contracting where contracts are perceived not just as something to be shoved in the drawer, but rather as tools that can guide, support and empower the businesses. In this episode we meet with Sarah Fox, a contract simplification specialist and the creator of the 500 word contract. Having decades of experience as a construction lawyer, Sarah knows how bad contracts can cost time, money, deals and relationships. With her simplified contract design model she advocates for more meaningful and user-friendly contracts that help streamline deals, enhance customer relations, and still keep everyone protected. Sarah shares with us how she came up with the idea of the 500 word contract and what kind of feedback she has since received from users and other lawyers. We also hear her tips for contract simplification and how to use them in redesigning other types of legal information as well. And of course, we also discuss the future of contract design with AI. How many words is your current contract, including the Terms & Conditions? Did you account for every eventuality, not matter how rare? Can your contract be cut down to only 500 words? I had a great conversation with Sarah Fox, a “Recovering Lawyer”, and fellow speaker I met in the UK. In her former life as a corporate attorney she saw the ridiculousness of the length of so many contracts. Then, her sister challenged her to write a contract with only 500 words… and viola, thus began her new, post-attorney life!Listen to this conversation between Sarah and I for some inspiration on how you can be more transparent in your contract, shorten them, and inject your personality at the same time.NOTE: This conversation is not intended to be legal advice. Circular with Katie Treggiden

In this episode, Katie talks with Sarah Fox a coach and mentor helping organisations and individuals who are motivated to do good and do well, being drivers of positive social change. Sarah's mission is to help people who care about the world to live a life of fulfilment, a life that is truly well lived, meaningful, purposeful and creative. We discuss:Sarah's strive to always do good and her journey with ‘kindness'What is means to be good, not just to the natural world but to ourselves.Sarah's values of kindness, compassion, cooperation, collaboration and courage (added during the podcast!)…and how these relate to our self-worth.Why this group of people, who are working so hard to look after everybody else and bring about positive change in the world, find it so difficult to take care of themselves.Do we need to learn to look after ourselves in order to look after the planet, are those things connected? The importance of connecting with nature, observing nature in the human world and reminding ourselves of the bigger picture. Here are some highlights:What does it mean to be good?“Essentially for me, the doing good bit is what it's about it's about leaving the world or trying to leave the world in a better place than you found it. Really stepping into what we can do that somehow contributes positively and whilst doing that, really thinking about how we do well based in terms of quality. But also in terms of our own well-being. When I talk about wellbeing, I'm talking about physical well-being emotional well-being and financial well-being. So how can we bring those things together so that we are making an impact of some kind and we're doing that in a way that is conscious and we have a self-awareness about that. But also, how can we do it so that we're not breaking in the process.” I have value in the world!“It's as much about being kind to ourselves, as it is to everybody else. And if we can hold up a mirror, if we can talk to ourselves in the way that we talk to other people, if we can take action, and be kind to ourselves in the way that we are with other people, then I think the world would be a much better place, because it's coming from people feeling like they are enough already, without having to do all the things.” “if you already feel safe and enough, then you can really focus on delivering benefit in a way that most benefits the people you're trying to serve.” How can we step into our wise Jedi self?“I think if we're going to have these regenerative, restorative businesses, there needs to be a complete self-awareness as much as possible. We need to be in our autonomy, not standing in the narrative pattern that we have been in in the past. And how do we kind of step into, I call it the wise Jedi self, rather than that kind of inner critic? How do we step into that? So that we can create these businesses that are making a difference, that is having the impact that we want to have and that we don't get distracted?” Books & Podcasts we mentioned:Consumed by Aja BarberBetween the Stops by Sandi ToksvigThe Choice by Edith EgerHow to Own the Room by Viv Groskop  | How To Own The Room on Apple PodcastsHow to be Hopeful by Bernadette Russell  You can find out more about Sarah here, connect on LinkedIn and listen to her podcast on Spotify or Apple With reference to our conversation on what is “good” and who gets to decide – here is Alexandra Daisy Ginsberg's PhD “better”: https://www.daisyginsberg.com/work/better  Spread the Word:Please share Circular with Katie Treggiden with wild abandon — with your friends, family, and fellow designer-makers or wherever interesting conversations about creativity happen in your world! If you love what you're listening to, show me some love by following Circular with Katie Treggiden in this app and leaving a review. Sarah Fox's fascinating new book Giving Birth in Eighteenth-Century England (U London Press, 2022) rewrites all that we know about eighteenth-century childbirth by placing women's voices at the center of the story. Examining childbirth from the perspective of the birthing woman, this research offers new perspectives on the history of the family, the social history of medicine, community and neighborhood studies, and the study of women's lives in eighteenth-century England. From “quickening” through to “confinement,” “giving caudle,” delivery, and “lying-in,” birth was once a complex ritual that involved entire communities. Drawing on an extensive and under-researched body of materials, such as letters, diaries, and recipe books, this book offers critical new perspectives on the history of the family, community, and the lives of women in the coming age of modern medicine. It unpacks the rituals of contemporary childbirth—from foods traditionally eaten before and after birth, birthing clothing, and how a woman's relationship with her family, husband, friends, and neighbors changed during and after pregnancy. In this important and deeply moving study, we are invited onto a detailed and emotional journey through motherhood in an age of immense socio-cultural and intellectual change. Our guest this week is Traci Galyon, or Reroute. Traci's evolution from irregular hiker to thru-hiker is interesting, in that it was her husband Don who was originally intending to hit the AT. Instead, Traci absorbed the information, found herself drawn in by the adventure, and eventually went alone on the trail. She plans to hike the PCT this year, WITH her husband Don, so we'll look out for that story later in the year. You can connect with Traci through Facebook at https://www.facebook.com/traci.marriedtodon, Instagram at https://www.instagram.com/thereluctanthiker72/, and on YouTube at https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCjGW87doU9H8XxouyOB1iXw Our final catch up with our Class of 2022 is with Sarah Fox. Sarah even discusses the possibility that she will leave her dog at home, depending upon how she perceives the trail to be.
