It's 2008, and vampires are having their big moment. With the release of the first Twilight movie, Stephanie Meyer forever changed our conceptions of creatures of the night by making them...sparkly. Whether you were a die-hard fan who read all the books or just got dragged to see Breaking Dawn Part Two in theaters, you definitely have some thoughts on the Twilight Saga — as do our Gen Z hosts Aidan and Aditi. In our latest Banterly episode, we delve into the enduring legacy of the Twilight series, offering not only a glimpse into its impact but also a quick dive into the history of vampires. Plus, we unearth lesser-known tidbits about the first Twilight film's director, Catherine Hardwicke, whose artistic vision gave birth to the iconic sepia-filtered world of Twilight. __ Hosted by: Aditi Misra & Aidan Taylor Producer: Shei Yu | Content Writers: Aditi Misra & Aidan Taylor I Editorial Review: Saadia Khan I Sound Designer & Editor: Ben Alleman I Immigrantly Theme Music: Simon Hutchinson | Other Music: Epidemic Sound | Cover art design: Josephine Chai | Executive Producer: Saadia Khan Please share the love and leave us a review on Apple Podcasts & Spotify to help more people find us! As Dust Bowl sandstorms ravaged the USA during the Great Depression, John Millburn Davis, a resident of Hiawatha, Kansas, decided to make a name for himself. A self-made millionaire with no children, Davis might have invested in charity or economic development. Instead, at great expense, he commissioned eleven life-size statues of himself and his deceased wife to stand in the local cemetery. “They hate me in Kansas,” Davis told journalist Ernie Pyle. Local residents wanted him to fund the construction of public facilities like a hospital, swimming pool, or park. Yet all he said was, “It’s my money and I spend it the way I please.” King Solomon, the wealthiest man of his day, wrote, “Whoever loves money never has enough,” and “as goods increase, so do those who consume them” (Ecclesiastes 5:10–11). Solomon had grown keenly aware of the corrupting tendencies of wealth. The apostle Paul also understood the temptation of wealth and chose to invest his life in obedience to Jesus. Awaiting execution in a Roman prison, he wrote triumphantly, “I am being poured out like a drink offering. I have finished the race, I have kept the faith” (2 Timothy 4:6–7). What lasts isn’t what we chisel in stone or horde for ourselves. It’s what we give out of love for each other and for Him—the One who shows us how to love.

Join us as we discuss another lesson on Spiritual gifts. Paul devoted an extensive portion of this letter to change the church's thinking concerning Spiritual gifts. All gifts are Spirit-ual. They are given by God's Spirit to be used for the edification of the church. But some in the church had abused these gifts and used them to gain status and created division in the process. This caused some to think they themselves were not important, and others to tell other people that they were not important. Paul believed all Spiritual gifts are important, even those considered weaker or acted out "behind the scenes." While desiring Spiritual gifts is good, the only way to use Spiritual gifts as God intended is to be coupled with love. Without love, Spiritual gifts are nothing.
Jesus calls us to live beyond ourselves, our generation, and even our geographical borders. After His resurrection, Jesus commanded His disciples to preach the Gospel in their nation and the nations beyond. “But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes on you; and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth.” (Acts 1:8 NIV) Pearlside is committed to training and sending missionaries and church planters locally (Jerusalem), nationally (Judea and Samaria), and globally (the ends of the earth). As disciples, we're all responsible for sharing the Gospel so others can receive Jesus as Lord and Savior.

World War One was the most consequential social event in centuries. 10 million soldiers died, creating 3 million widows and 10 million orphans. Many Europeans felt disillusionment and even anger about the war. They questioned earlier notions of honor, duty, and bravery. Europe lost its economic centrality. New York replaced London as the financial capital of the world., and the US and the USSR emerged as proto-superpowers. But positive changes happened. The notion of what roles women could take on changed. Women proved themselves capable of doing much of what men came. Four empires were gone. Many new smaller nations were created from the Empires’ former territories.

We begin our journey through the study of Abraham’s life, and I don’t want you to overlook the significance of this study. If you drive through a large US city and pass a church, a mosque, and a synagogue, the worshippers inside of every one of them see themselves as children of Abraham. Three of the world’s largest religions, the majority of the world’s population, look to Abraham as the father of their faith.Too often, when people study Abraham’s life, they see all these big things and the lasting results and residual of his life. That may be true, but there is something so much more significant that it always gets overlooked.Abraham was responding to the call of God. The call of God is what makes your life unique. It’s what sets you apart and marks you for something unique. Now don’t misunderstand what I’m saying here. In our circles, when someone here’s the phrase “the call of God,” we immediately assume the Call to pastoral ministry or preaching or missions.Pastoral ministry is not at all what I’m referring to when I speak of the call of God on Abraham’s life. Abraham's call, was a call to a relationship, a call to a profound personal encounter, a call to know God and be known by God. And Abraham’s response to that call is what made him “bigger” than life.God is extending that same call is to every one of us in this room or watching online: It’s The Divine Call to Leave an Eternal Legacy.

There are some days when I feel like I’m building a legacy- maybe if I’ve had a really meaningful conversation with a dear daughter, or done something that seems like it could have some big impact. And there are other days that feel small like when I run errands, fold the laundry and make dinner for my husband. Maybe you can relate. You may not feel like you are building a legacy when you pray with your friend about her job interview, or when you care for a sick toddler, or make a phone call to check in with a family member but there’s good news … you are leaving a legacy. Yep, even when you do simple things like running errands, folding laundry and making dinner. Today on the show I talk with a lovely mother-daughter team, Jackie Green and Lauren Green McAfee, about the opportunities we have to build a legacy that outlives our lives. And spoiler alert, you don’t have to be famous to leave a legacy. Jackie and Lauren’s new book, Only One Life: How a Woman’s Every Day Shapes an Eternal Legacy, is all about that and more. Matthew 5:14-1614 “You are the light of the world. A town built on a hill cannot be hidden. 15 Neither do people light a lamp and put it under a bowl. Instead they put it on its stand, and it gives light to everyone in the house. 16 In the same way, let your light shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in heaven. LEGACY - What you leave BEHIND Living with a GENEROUS mentality will build an ETERNAL legacy. You break free from “Me” when you shift from: “Look what I HAVE” to “Look what God has GIVEN ME” John 3:12-1712 When he had finished washing their feet, he put on his clothes and returned to his place. “Do you understand what I have done for you?” he asked them. 13 “You call me ‘Teacher’ and ‘Lord,’ and rightly so, for that is what I am. 14 Now that I, your Lord and Teacher, have washed your feet, you also should wash one another’s feet. 15 I have set you an example that you should do as I have done for you. 16 Very truly I tell you, no servant is greater than his master, nor is a messenger greater than the one who sent him. 17 Now that you know these things, you will be blessed if you do them.
