Interview by Kris PetersCharity events are always special on the music calendar, with a plethora of worthy causes benefitting from the generosity and respect shown by many a band and punter. But when they are organised by people who have been afflected personally by the very condition they are drawing attention to, it becomes that bit more special.Beyond The Darkness is one such event.Organised by Jackie Green - who lost her husband to cancer in early 2022 - and her partner Dexx, Beyond The Darkness is in its second year after a successful first showcase event last year. While the concert aims to raise finances and awareness to benefit the GI Cancer Institute, it also shines light on illnesses and diseases of all kinds and the need for people in the community to ensure they keep abreast of potential dangers before it's too late.To be held at the Back Room, Annerley on September 14, Beyond The Darkness will be headlined by local metal stars Engraved, with Sentiment, Void Matter, Krave, InEffigy and more all donating their time to spread the message and love.Jackie and Dexx joined HEAVY recently to talk more about the event."On the 22nd of April 2022 my husband David died of oesophageal cancer," Jackie explained. "It just came on. He had a 13-month battle, and we tried everything and threw everything at it, and then he got a secondary cancer. Once most people get a secondary cancer, there's not much you can do. I lost him, and I really didn't know what I was gonna do. I suppose my whole world was turned upside down. We just floated the idea - we wanted to do something to really celebrate his first year anniversary - so I floated the idea on Facebook and said to people what do we think and Brian said let's put on a show. So it was born from there."We mention the importance of not just raising money to assist in research for such illnesses, but also heightening awareness that these illnesses can and do strike without discrimination."They don't matter who you are, what age you are," Jackie continued. "David was only 47, so I think part of the awareness is people in our age group - in that 40 to 50 age group - to not be complacent about things. If something is not right, go and get it checked out."In the full interview, we emphasized the importance of early ticket purchases for local events like Beyond The Darkness, the intricacies of planning a festival line-up, emphasizing the significance of band selection, cohesion, and stage presence plus the bands playing and the selection process. We also talked about the logistics of the benefit concert, addressing donation options and ticket sales, and promoting their show, Oz Fest with Dexx and Jackie O.

If you've never heard of complete androgen insensitivity syndrome, you're not alone. It's one of 44 intersex variations which, although they affect up to 2 percent of the population, are rarely talked about. Jackie Green wants to change that. As a competitive runner (and Tina's teammate) at Ferris State University, she kept quiet about having CAIS. But she came out publicly five years ago and now uses her platform as the reigning Mrs. America to advocate for intersex youth. Forward Radio programmers, Justin Mog (Sustainability Now!), Hart Hagan (The Climate Report & Let’s Talk), and Ruth Newman (Election Connection) are joined in the virtual studio by Jackie Green, owner of Bike Courier Bike Shop, and local transportation advocate, Jackie Cobb. We not only discuss a new vision for a way forward, but chew on two big pieces of news this week: BUDGET NEWS: The Mayor has just submitted a proposed capital budget to Metro Council for 2020-21 that did NOT include funding ($60,000) to conduct a detailed traffic analysis of removing the Bardstown Road peak hours lane lights, a top recommendation for implementation of the Bardstown Road Safety Study. But the budget DOES include $2.5 million for intelligent traffic signal synchronization along the Bardstown Road corridor (from Broadway to the Gene Snyder) to support congestion mitigation and future bus rapid transit. It also includes funding for conversion of at least eight one-way streets in downtown Louisville to two-way traffic flow, and construction of 10 more miles of the Louisville Loop. TARC NEWS: https://www.ridetarc.org/tarc-seeking-public-comment-on-proposed-route-changes/ On April 29th, TARC announced plans to dramatically realign its system map, ultimately eliminating 22 of 47 current routes (47%) and decreasing the frequency of its Dixie Rapid BRT route 10. Proposed changes include discontinuing all express routes and circulators (except the route 20 Riverport Circulator) and local routes 62 (Breckenridge Shepherdsville), 82 (New Albany - Jeffersonville) and 22 (Twenty-Second Street). Eventually, we may expect the frequency and service level of remaining routes to increase as a result but the details are unclear at this point. TARC is reviewing the changes through an equity lens but 97% of riders use barely half of the current routes (which was true before coronavirus) and TARC’s cost per rider nears $60 in some parts of our community (versus $2.50 elsewhere), which threatens the enterprise. Detailed information concerning the changes is posted on TARC’s website, and public comments may be submitted to: PublicComment@ridetarc.org Public hearings will take place online May 13th at 5:30pm and May 18th at 12:00pm, via Zoom, as well. TARC is seeking the public’s input on three phases of potential service adjustments. The first, Phase A, would start on Aug. 9, 2020, and the others would be phased in as needed to achieve a sustainable financial standing. Phase A: Proposed changes include discontinuing the LouLift circulators (routes 01 & 77), local route 62, circulator 96, and all express routes (except 61X, 67X, & 78X). Phase B: Proposed changes include discontinuing local route 82, remaining express routes (exceptions from Phase A), circulators 52 and 75, and local route 22. Phase C: Proposed changes include temporary frequency adjustments to the Dixie Rapid BRT (route 10). However, BRT service frequency will remain at 15 minutes weekdays, from 6 a.m. to 7 p.m. On Truth to Power, we gather Forward Radio programmers and friends to discuss the state of the world, the nation, the state, and the city! It's a community conversation like you won't hear anywhere else! Truth to Power airs every Sunday at 4pm, Monday at 2pm, and Tuesday at 9am on Louisville's grassroots, community radio station, Forward Radio 106.5fm WFMP and live streams at http://forwardradio.org
Jackie Green and Lauren McAfee discussed their book, “Only One Life: How a Woman's Every Day Shapes an Eternal Legacy”, and the important women of the Bible who have made impact on our world!
Have you ever taken the time to take an honest and fair look at the most controversial book in history? Lauren McAfee shares why the Bible might be nothing we expected yet everything we need in her brand new book, Not What You Think. Lauren McAfee and Michael McAfee have been married for ten years; and Michael calls Lauren his Sunday School sweetheart. You can say Michael is obsessed with all things Bible. He was one of the first employees at Museum of the Bible. Michael serves as a Teaching Pastor and speaker around the country. Both he and Lauren are pursuing their Ph.D. in Ethics and Public Policy at Southern Baptist Theological Seminary. Now Lauren is a communicator, connector, and most importantly, a coffee enthusiast with a heart to engage others in the Bible. You may recall Lauren's visit with us a little over a year ago with her mom, Jackie Green --- who is the wife of Steve Green, who is the President of Hobby Lobby and founder of Museum of the Bible. They shared with us their book Only One Life. Well today, Michael and Lauren, a dynamic duo, have banded together to share their passion about the transformational power of the Bible in their brand new book, Not What You Think: Why The Bible Might Be Nothing We Expected Yet Everything We Need. "The Bible is a personal story set on a universal stage.” ~ Lauren McAfee CONNECT with Lauren McAfee BOOK: Not What You Think Enjoy the multitude of topics discussed including millennials, humility, Harry Potter, grief, plus so much more. "Those of us may be open to the Bible, and kind of see it as something that's just out there --- that's the middle group. (Bible Opened)" "Those that are really engaged in the Bible see the Bible as significant for their life; it shapes their life. (Bible Engaged)" "Those that are not really interested in the Bible. They not only don't think about it, but they're definitely not interested that don't want to, wouldn't want to even, if someone invited them to. (Bible Closed)." "If we are the open-minded generation that we are, why not be open-minded towards engaging in this book." "Though we each grew up with families that were very engage in the Bible, we each had to come to terms with the Bible, what we thought about the Bible for ourselves." "We, as Millennials, realize that we're not an older generation that's developed all the expertise. But as Millennials, we have spent a lot of time in the conversations with other Millennials." "Most of us are checking Twitter for the news." "We integrate everything in our life; things between kind of personal and public; the lines are blurred there, because of the rise of social media." "So while we have lots of integrated relationships, we're rarely intimate in those relationships." "So it's about that relationship and not necessarily about the Ten Commandments and rules, though that is apart of the story." "We recognize that we live in a world full of broken people (that's because of sin), and that no church, no Christian is perfect. And so we do cause hurts to each other and sometimes really bad hurts." "I knew that there had to be ways to process through these questions, and even if I couldn't find the answer, at least kind of dig into understanding better where he was coming from." "That was a gift that I wouldn't have had if I wasn't able to be challenged and have people question and bring up good points that were worth considering until I wrestled through that." "Michael mentions that I am a big Harry Potter fan." "There's so much evidence that's hard to push aside. "But also realize that not all content is of equal value." "Michael and I are so grateful for what we know from scripture, and that firm foundation to hold to in the midst of suffering when we don't understand, it doesn't make sense, we don't know why." "We have that hope because of who Christ is and what He's done for us." What has your story gifted you? Courage "Courage to have more conversations with others about engaging in the Bible." Mother and daughter Jackie Green and Lauren Green McAfee, draw on the legacy of generations of Green family women, women in the Bible and throughout history. In their first book, "Only One Life," they push back against feminist opinions of the Bible as misogynistic, and responsible for suppressing women. The Green's paint a bold picture of the Bible's women like Esther, Mary Magdalene, and of course Mary the mother of Jesus for their courage, wisdom, and boldness. They explain how their faith is reflected in women through the ages including today, giving an example like Queen Elizabeth II, one of Jackie's distant cousins. The Hobby Lobby store chain has become an empire, but the Green's say it was the power of the faith of the women that took the family from literal rags.... to riches.

There are some days when I feel like I’m building a legacy- maybe if I’ve had a really meaningful conversation with a dear daughter, or done something that seems like it could have some big impact. And there are other days that feel small like when I run errands, fold the laundry and make dinner for my husband. Maybe you can relate. You may not feel like you are building a legacy when you pray with your friend about her job interview, or when you care for a sick toddler, or make a phone call to check in with a family member but there’s good news … you are leaving a legacy. Yep, even when you do simple things like running errands, folding laundry and making dinner. Today on the show I talk with a lovely mother-daughter team, Jackie Green and Lauren Green McAfee, about the opportunities we have to build a legacy that outlives our lives. And spoiler alert, you don’t have to be famous to leave a legacy. Jackie and Lauren’s new book, Only One Life: How a Woman’s Every Day Shapes an Eternal Legacy, is all about that and more. What does it mean to be a woman of legacy? To have an impact beyond today? The Open Door Sisterhood is set to equip women to do just that, design a life that has an eternal imprint. And mother/daughter duo Jackie Green and Lauren Green McAfee, of the Hobby Lobby Green family, are on a similar mission to inspire women to think past today. Their new book Only One Life features women throughout history who have followed God's call to live with legacy in mind. Our conversation with Jackie and Lauren covers stories from their own family and decisions to women featured in the book. We talk through generosity, specific callings, what is eternal, and how we can discern where God has placed us for influence. Nothing could reflect the spirit of The Open Door Sisterhood more than this conversation with two women walking through the doors God is opening to act as world changers right where they are. From fighting busyness to the discipline of saying "no" we hear how these two women discern the opportunities in front of them. A multi-generational message that rings true no matter your stage of life, we can be sowing into what will last for eternity. An inspiring conversation that pushed us to once again consider this one life we've been given and how we are spending it.

On top of all this, the Bible is a resource for parents as well. Even though roughly 70,000 books have been written on the topic of raising kids, the Bible has always been a preeminent go-to source for parents worldwide. This has certainly been true for American parents—at least for the first 200 years of our nation's history, anyway. In more recent times, the Bible has become more of a “dust collector” than a “just director” for American families. To steal a phrase from one popular self-proclaimed parenting expert, “How's that working for us?” Now that America has become a much more dangerous place to raise our children, perhaps we need to return to parenting by the book—this dangerous book, as some call it. Steve Green is the President of Hobby Lobby, the largest privately owned arts and crafts retailer in the world. His wife Jackie actively supports him in his position at Hobby Lobby and is an adoptive mom who has served on the advisory board of a local crisis pregnancy center. She has also worked with her family in orphanages worldwide. Together, Steve and Jackie have written a book about the Bible called This Dangerous Book. They are also a part of the founding family of the Museum of the Bible. The Museum of the Bible is the largest international museum in the world devoted solely to the presentation and preservation of the Bible. This facility opened its doors in November of 2017, but since 2009, the Greens have been collecting biblical artifacts from all around the world. Today, they possess one of the largest collections in the world. Steve and Jackie provide unique insight and commentary into the Bible's role in our public and our personal lives. They have been blessed six children and four grandchildren. How the Bible Is a Resource That Reveals a Path Toward Healing When pop-psychologists and traditional approaches to helping troubled teenagers fall short, Shepherds Hill Academy remains a proving ground for the truth and power of God's written Word to heal not only kids who have one foot in jail or one foot in the grave, but their entire families as well. Incredibly, this is happening for families from all across the country and around the world. While it's easy to think that the healing is coming largely from Shepherds Hill Academy's clinical approaches alone, we really attribute the lion's share of the healing to the truth and power of God's Word. The clinical team here at Shepherds Hill Academy is just doing what is congruent with what the Scriptures have already been trying to teach folks for thousands of years. One of those things is leading people to healthy and right thinking. Without the Bible, how would we know what healthy and right thinking actually is? The Bible really is the ultimate psychology book. But it is much more than that. It reveals God and His redemptive purposes. It leads us to right “being.” Mental health professionals have their own “bible” of sorts; It's called the DSM (The Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders). They would say that this is where “right thinking” is discovered. But if things keep going as they have been going in mental health circles in recent times, “Christianity” itself might eventually be found as an actual disorder in their DSM. Today, Steve and Jackie Green and I discuss the Bible as we cover the following topics: Why is the Bible considered dangerous? Who are Steve and Jackie Green? Why is the Bible different from the Quran? What is the Bible Museum? How did the Bible Museum begin? How can the Bible Museum benefit my family? Picture provided by: Chajm Guski
