It's rare to encounter a physician as good in finances as they are in the work world. And for a good reason. Medical jobs have the highest rates of burnout of all professions. Physicians just don't have time to care about investing, retiring early, wealth, etc. But today's guest - Dr. Elisa Chiang - did. And the results speak for themselves. Elisa is a board-certified ophthalmologist and fellowship-trained oculoplastic surgeon who, in her words, "Has worked both in private practice as well as for a bureaucratic hospital system." After experiencing burnout, she decided to go all in investing to achieve early retirement and escape the medical industry. Fast forward to today, she's a wealthy life coach that helps other people like her (physicians just like you) to make better life choices with their finances that serves their needs. The work of people like Elisa gets us excited about the future of personal finance in the physician work world. If you're a medical professional that:     •    Struggles with burnout.     •    Experiences second thoughts about their medical career     •    Are confronted with big decisions like marriage, investments, retirement, moving, etc. You'll find this episode quite helpful! Hello everyone, we are back today with a very special guest. It is the Physician on Fire himself! He was last on the show in 2018 and is here to give us an update on how his life is going as a retired physician and how the pandemic has affected him and his family as well. Don't miss out as he gives some amazing tips for how your family can follow in his footsteps too! If you'd like to support the podcast, I'd so appreciate it if you head over to HippocraticHustle.com/Patreon. You can find information there about how you can support the show. My guest today, Physician on Fire, is a former anesthesiologist, family man and supposed outdoor enthusiast who spends way too much time indoors, especially now that he is quarantined in Northern Michigan. He attained financial independence at age 39, meaning that he could afford to retire comfortably after a 9-year career. He continued to work for various reasons, but eventually, he chose to retire early at the age of 43. Prior to the COVID-19 epidemic, he was touring Mexico and Spain with his wife and two boys. Currently, he is holed up with them in an undisclosed location in Northern Michigan. In this episode, you will learn: What POF has been up to since retirement. How much money do you really need to retire? How the quarantine is a miniature version of what your retirement could be. What changes you need to be aware of regarding savings and retirement due to the pandemic and economic changes. How to select the best investment choices for FIRE. Why it's so important to pay off student loans as soon as possible. What's next for POF and his family? What tips they have for home-schooling/world-schooling their kids. In this episode of Wine and Dime I chat with self proclaimed nerd, Ryan Inman. Ryan is a very driven individual who keeps himself very busy with many different endeavors! He owns a fee only financial planning practice specializing in Doctors called Loan Buddy (https://www.loanbuddy.us/) . Ryan is truly passionate about helping people with their Student Loan Debt, and I guess that’s why we get along so well. We talk about all those things and much more, so be sure to tune in a check it out! Ryan InmanI graduated from the University of San Diego (USD) with a BA in Business Administration, an MA in Accounting and Financial Management, and an MA in Business Administration. During grad school, I worked at Merrill Lynch under a fantastic advisor, but soon realized that the average advisor in the industry was more concerned with selling financial products and obtaining new clients with investable assets than working with those who could really use the financial guidance to succeed in life. That really turned me off from the industry, so I switched gears and worked for KPMG in public accounting. During my second year, I was fortunate to run into an old friend who was a CFP® and a fee-only financial planner. He introduced me to the concept of fee-only financial planning, where planners put their clients first, don’t sell products, and are true fiduciaries. It sounded too good to be true. I decided to join his firm where I had an amazing hands-on experience learning what true financial planning was all about – working with clients and helping them achieve their financial goals! While I enjoyed my time there, I ultimately learned I didn’t want to work with the ultra-wealthy as much as young physicians who were starting their careers and could really benefit from truly unbiased, quality financial advice. I have an intimate knowledge of the pains, struggles, and joys that come from a career in medicine. I know what it’s like to be buried in debt while your physician spouse makes next to nothing and spends every fourth night in the hospital. I understand what you’re going through; my wife and I have been there. I started my fee-only practice to help physicians sleep well at night knowing they have a trusted advisor who is guiding them toward financial independence. This is my family practice. My goal is to take care of you while you take care of your patients. I’ll be accessible when you are – in the evenings after you get your kids to bed, during your commute home, or in between patients. Short of the overnight shift, consider me on-call. Before he comes into the Millhouse, Bethany and Ellie discuss the cost of higher education. They discuss the ideas of getting another degree and what career they would have had in another life. When considering returning to school, there are other things to take into account like time, your family, who will take care of your children, emotional energy, relationships, hobbies, buying a home, etc.  There are also benefits of going back to school can be that you can earn more income, you could change career fields, following your passion, the desire to help people, etc.  Ryan comes to Ellie's kitchen table to discuss the student loans associated with major degrees like becoming a doctor. Ryan works with physicians across the country who have an average of $283k in debt. This often means delaying having kids, delaying having homes, etc. He also says that debt can get out of the hole if they don't let other bad financial habits get in the way. He also discusses ways to get over the student loan crisis and crunches the numbers when it comes to paying those loans back over time.  Bethany and Ellie end the show discussing the financial difference between becoming a doctor or a lawyer, and which degree has a better return on the investment. They also discuss the specific top 10 law schools when it comes to the best ROI.  Resources: The Financial Residency Podcast financialresidency.com/studentloan/

Ryan Inman founded Physician Wealth Services, a fee-only financial planning firm devoted to the financial well-being of physicians (physicianwealthservices.com). He was inspired to do so after witnessing how vulnerable his wife was to poor financial advice during residency. He was shocked at how many advisors tried to take advantage of her and her peers. To meet the needs of a much larger audience than those in his backyard, Ryan then created Financial Residency (financialresidency.com), a podcast and associated Facebook group that serves hundreds of attendings, residents, and their spouses who have had it with their financial challenges. His podcast teaches financial concepts so you can protect and grow your assets, and shield yourself from insurance agents, stock brokers, fee-based financial planners, and lenders that attempt to sell you financial products and services you don’t need. He has an undergraduate degree in accounting, and 2 masters degrees, including an MBA. I met Ryan through a mutual podcasting friend, Dr. David Draghinas. I love his podcast and his approach to providing financial services for physicians like me. During our discussion, Ryan provided important financial advice for those planning to pursue a nonclinical career. Some of the topics he covers include: The absolute need to develop a WRITTEN plan describing your ideal life and the ultimate goals you’re trying to achieve; Addressing major debt before embarking on a career shift, and limiting lifestyle creep as a way to do that; Awareness of financial landmines related to life, disability and malpractice insurance; Understanding vesting and how it might affect growth of retirement accounts; and, Some of the major money mistakes physicians tend to make, in general, and how to avoid them. Ryan is the founder of Financial Residency - a free financial education podcast for physicians and Physician Wealth Services, a fee-only financial planning company. The topic of our discussion in this episode is Financial Training!Ryan joined Jeff on the mini-podcast to talk about financial training for physicians. As the husband of a pediatric pulmonologist, he knows from personal experience that physicians are highly intelligent. Having met many of his wife’s colleagues and hearing lots of stories, he knows that surgeons don’t receive much training in managing finances for business, and perhaps more importantly for our personal goals and financial wellness (wealth). Ryan’s goal is to arm physicians with the knowledge they never received during medical school and residency. Does that sound familiar? *Ahem, cough, SurgeonMasters.* Ryan started the Financial Residency Podcast to help physicians increase their financial literacy. Through his experience with his financial planning, Ryan understands that many of his clients, and physicians in general, are coming out of school with over $200K in debt. Despite that, he knows that lifestyle inflation is one of the most common first mistakes that many make.Training on any subject begins with the basics. Then knowledge and success build with repeated practice. How do we avoid lifestyle inflation and achieve long-term financial goals? Here’s what Ryan suggests:Step 1 - Take Control Early (or Now!) - Evaluate your financial situation. What is coming in? Where is your money going? Remember, it’s NEVER TOO LATE! Step 2 - Understand Your Financial Goals - Importantly, how will this make you happy? Step 3 - Create a Plan that will achieve these goals! What are your priorities so you achieve these first? Developing a plan and following it will help you get there. While these basics steps describe WHAT needs to be done, HOW you do this is up to you. How will you improve your financial training and wealth? Will you train yourself more? Will you delegate some financial training? Will you outsource your financial wealth to a financial planner?Any of the above will require you to at least learn the basics. We hope you will add to your training with our podcast with Ryan Inman. How Our Financial Goals Followed Our Family What’s Your One Page Financial Plan? Ryan asked three crucial questions on the podcast.  I want you to imagine that you are financially secure, that you have enough money to take care of your needs, now and in the future. The question is, how would you live your life? What would you do with the money? Would you change anything? Let yourself go. Don’t hold back your dreams. Describe a life that is complete, that is richly yours. This time, you visit your doctor who tells you that you have five to ten years left to live. The good part is that you won’t ever feel sick. The bad news is that you will have no notice of the moment of your death. What will you do in the time you have remaining to live? Will you change your life, and how will you do it? This time, your doctor shocks you with the news that you have only one day left to live. Notice what feelings arise as you confront your very real mortality. Ask yourself: What dreams will be left unfulfilled? What do I wish I had finished or had been? What do I wish I had done? What did I miss? Jumpstart Your Marriage and Money Course Want to give your marriage and bank account a boost? Pick up Jumpstart Your Marriage and Money course. This week we're joined by Ryan Inman of Physicianwealthservices.com and the Financial Residency podcast. Ryan got even more passionate about the field of personal finance when his wife was in residency and she began to pass along information that she received from “financial advisors” trying to sell her products. He found it alarming how vulnerable she was to bad advice and bad investments. Most doctors aren’t married to a financial planner and they end up getting taken advantage of or making catastrophic financial mistakes. He is now a fee-only advisor focusing on helping physicians and others make sound personal finance decisions through transparency and ensuring he keeps the best interest of his clients at the forefront of his mind. We were happy to catch him at FinCon17 for a live recording covering: Term insurance and why investments and insurance should not be mixed or viewed the same, "Investments are investments and insurance is insurance." Who needs insurance and how to determine the type and amount of insurance you or your family need Investment Theory and the key differences between active and passive investing References Mentioned in This Show Ryan Inman Website: Physicianwealthservices.com Podcast: Financial Residency Twitter: @PhysicianWealth Recommended Life Insurance Calculator XY Planning Network: Fee-Only Financial Advisors Announcements Check out our PATREON page! We’re raising funds to grow the show so we can create more great content that helps you get ahead professionally and financially.
