Today on, The Bearded Monkey Podcast, I sit down and talk with Will Grimes and Eli Schmidt from Mile High Property Brothers. We actually recorded this episode in their studio in the Denver Metro Area. On this episode of Gen X Amplified, I have a great and important conversation with Zephrine Hanson. Zephrine is a veteran, farmer, story amplifier, and the founder of Hampden Farms, a suburban farming project that offers small-batch artisanal products made from organic ingredients that are lovingly grown and sustainably sourced. And she also happens to be a fellow member of LinkedIn's inaugural cohort of its Creator Accelerator Program! During this episode, Zephrine and I discuss her personal story — which includes a beginning career in the military, how she got into lavender farming, and her insights and advice on managing one's mental health. Particularly as a 40-plus professional, business owner, parent, and community builder.  About Zephrine Born and raised in San Fernando Valley California, Zephrine enlisted in the Air Force immediately after graduating high school. With a background in media communications and journalism, she served as a public affairs and medical photographer stationed in Germany and Texas. After medical retirement from the Air Force in 2004, Zephrine shifted to freelance photography, returned to college for communications. With the resounding support of her partner, the Hansons packed up and moved to Denver, CO in 2016 where she embraced a calmer, holistic lifestyle. Finally enjoying some space to breathe, Zephrine took advantage of veteran programs including The Entrepreneurship Bootcamp for Veterans with Disabilities (EBV) consortium at UCLA, the Veterans to Farmers program in partnership with Denver Botanic Gardens (DBG), and the Veterans' Path mindfulness and yoga training in Colorado. In 2017 she began planting seeds and nurturing people through Hampden Farms, a suburban farming project offering sustainable farming solutions and small-batch artisanal products made from organic ingredients lovingly grown and conscientiously sourced. Through Hampden Farms, Zephrine continued collaborations with the DBG to include earning her 300-hour Herbalism Certification. She now serves as a Self-Care Share Producer and Farmer for Chatfield along with being an instructor and ambassador for the Garden's Veterans-to-Farmers program. Zephrine is a proud member of the Denver Metro Area's chapter of MileHigh Farmers, the grassroots organization for farmers and farmer advocates. She is also lends her experience and voice to the Food Policy Cohort for LiveWell focused on overcoming inequitable access to healthy food and physical activity in Colorado. To better marry her passion for sustainable farming with drive for entrepreneurship and enterprise, Zephrine is actively pursuing Bunker Lab's Veteran-in-Residence program. She continues to advocate and be a community influencer for Autism awareness and education joining the TACT (Teaching the Autism Community Trades) board in February, 2020. When Zephrine is not changing the world one plant and person at a time, she enjoys epic LEGO builds with her three tween inventors and going down Google rabbit holes with her favorite tech nerd and beloved partner, Justin.   Zephrine's Personal Theme Song “Control” by Janet Jackson   Thank you for listening! Thank you so very much for listening to the podcast. There are so many other shows out there, so the fact that you took the time to listen in really means a lot!   Subscribe to Gen X Amplified!

Born in Hollywood California, Louie was blessed to be part of a Christian home. Although raised in a Christian home, Christianity was the last thing on his mind.   Louie's parents struggled for many years to find a good Bible based church. For years they searched, attended churches here and there but never planted where they could grow. In the early 1980's his parents however were fortunate to find a large fresh growing congregation in Downey California, called Calvary Chapel of Downey Pastored by Jeff Johnson.   Although raised in a Christian home and placed into a Christian school Christianity was last thing on his mind. Surfing, Skating, and girls were his priorities. It wasn't until his sophomore year in 1992 that he had a radical encounter with God. This incredible event took place while shooting hoops at his local park. Everything he was taught, everything he knew broke to the surface of his mind and heart. The Holy Spirit touched Louie's heart in such a powerful way that his life was radically changed from that time on. In 1993 he went on a high school mission trip to Russia to help a newly planted church, Calvary Chapel in Vladimir. It was on this mission trip his calling into the ministry was defined. There was nothing he wanted more then to serve Jesus with his life.   As Louie began to grow quickly and his calling being clear, Pastor Jeff Johnson asked if he would serve as the Jr. High Pastor at Calvary Chapel Downey in 1995. He served as the Jr. High youth Pastor until 2003 when he moved his family to Denver Colorado to help Ed Taylor with his growing church plant in the city of Aurora. He served and attended Calvary Chapel Aurora Assisting for 9 years watching it grow from a church of a couple hundred to a few thousand.     In the spring of 2012 the Lord told Louie it was time to go. After much fasting & prayer the Lord made it very clear he was to Pastor a small group of believers that were already meeting in the city of Denver. On September 30th 2012 Denver Calvary Chapel was planted. Denver Calvary has been blessed with many individuals and families making this their new church home. It's an exciting fresh new work of God.   Louie currently serves as the pastor for Denver Calvary. He and his wife Tracy live in the Denver Metro Area.

Reid weighs in with his memories of the inception of the program and the story behind the name. We give a little sneak peek of Fiona Forward throughout the year and what's in store for 2022. 2021 was a year of great success for Fiona Forward. Abby dives deep into some of the volunteer work that was carried out under the initiative. Last year, Fiona Forward had the opportunity to partner with Food for Thought Denver, an organization that focuses on eliminating weekend hunger for children in the Denver Metro Area. Initiatives like this are mutually beneficial to the local communities as well as the businesses themselves. Gentrification: The Denver Experience We talk about the history and politics of gentrification here on the CU Denver campus, as well as in the Denver Metro Area. Many news organizations and libraries have documented the ongoing disenfranchisement of the “Displaced Aurarians”—a largely Hispanic neighborhood “relocated” by the Auraria Campus, which houses CU Denver, Metro State University, and Community College of Denver. However, very few news sources have framed that notorious displacement within Denver's larger culture of gentrification. According to a 2020 study by the National Community Reinvestment Coalition, Denver is the second most gentrified city in the nation, with over 27% of its neighborhoods affected by skyrocketing home prices and rising inequality. We first interview two Auraria campus employees: Francine Olivas-Zarate, who is our CU Denver English Department Program Coordinator, and her sister Benita Olivas, who was an advisor and worked in the Women's Center at the Community College of Denver. Their family members lived on 9th Street Park before the mass displacement by Auraria Higher Education Center in the 1970s, and both have worked on campus near their family's original home. Second, we interview Dr. Jeremy Nemeth, Professor in CU Denver's Urban and Regional Planning Department, and Dr. Brian Page, Associate Professor in our Department of Geography and Environmental Sciences, about Denver's history of gentrification and current economic effects on particular neighborhoods. Finally, we interview Laura McKenna, Development Director of HomeAid America, who discusses the impact of gentrification on the growing number of unhoused people in Denver. It wasn't long ago that people were saying that brick and mortar stores are dead and will never come back.  Those folks better watch out because David is swinging his sling shot and has figured out a new way to slay Goliath! On today's episode I am speaking with an unbelievably innovative, rural entrepreneur, who is not afraid of brick and mortar.  Kayla Gabel is the owner of The Desert Rose Boutique in Wiggins, Colorado.  Located only 66 miles from Denver, she has customers that will drive 90 minutes to come spend the day in her shop rather than drive 20-30 minutes to shop in Denver.  Kayla has redefined brick and mortar, and she is only getting better. Kayla likes to shop, and that passion ultimately led her to starting her own, online boutique which she named Desert Rose.  However, it was becoming too much for her family to handle in their home, so she found herself opening up an actual store front.  Kayla chose to open that store in the small, farming based town that she lives in rather than commuting into a city where she might get more drive by traffic.  Actually, she ignored convention knowledge about opening up a physical location altogether.  Rather, with the help of the internet and social media, Kayla created her own community of fans, and now they drive to her small town to shop with her! Today the Desert Rose Boutique makes about 60% of its sales online with 40% of sales happening on location in Wiggins, Colorado.  However, Wiggins is very small and those 40% of sales are not exclusively from locals.  So, how does Kayla get people to drive to her small town to shop.....she created a community. Kayla is very active on social media, Facebook specifically, and she even has a special, VIP group on Facebook where she shares her life and exclusive offers with her fans.  She has also created a mobile app to keep in touch with her fans outside the confines of Facebook at the touch of a button. What Kayla really does is provides a unique experience, unique products and unbelievable customers service.  If a customer walks into her boutique, she knows who they are, what their story is and what they purchased last time.  She and her staff will visit all day with them, help them pick out outfits and provide the type of customer service that seemed to have died somewhere back about 1989.  Even though today many people will just buy from whomever and don't hold companies to any kind of standard when it comes to service, there are those who still demand to be treated well.  And, they are driving from the Denver Metro Area to a postage stamp, small town to get it. Kayla thinks way outside the box when it comes to business.  She has brought a massage therapist into her store so now people who want a massage can come be part of her boutique's experience as well.  She just purchased her first tanning bed, and soon will have three that she will rent to people looking to get some intense UV rays.  And of course, when they are done there is conversation, friendly people and unique clothing and products waiting for them right outside the door. Kayla is driving by a sense of community, and she is trying to bring customers to her community for a shopping experience that will extend beyond her boutique and into surrounding businesses. If you have ever wondered if you could start a brick and mortar store in your small town and succeed, you need to hear this interview with Kayla Gabel!

When the pandemic caused their respective businesses to contract almost overnight, the pair saw the potential for a high-quality Mexican food delivery service that could bring prepared meals direct to Denver residents. Érica grew up working in the daycare center and kitchens of the Aguascalientes farm business her grandfather established in 1957. Her Denver-born husband brought her to Colorado, and she's been importing frozen prepared food from Mexico to supply restaurants in the Denver Metro Area for a decade. Érica maintains deep ties to her family and country of birth, and all of the recipes and foods in the Green Roots line originate either in her family's Aguascalientes farm or her Houston family's meat business. “We hope that Dos Amigas allows families to slow down after a long day and enjoy dinnertime with no effort or drama.” Liz was born in Guadalajara and spent much of her early life in the United States working in restaurants. She discovered her passion for the transformative power of hair design and makeup and founded Beauty on Location and L Style Bar, businesses that have earned many accolades in Denver and beyond. Unable to find the true Mexican flavors she had grown up with, Liz connected with Érica's Mexican food import business. Learn why setting real estate goals that are big and bold can help you break through your limiting beliefs and achieve the life you want. Hear insights about: How Euan moved to the United States from Scotland in 2008, and how he went through an unusual career path that taught him how to build relationships and a referral-based business How Euan made the transition to selling real estate, and how he managed to thrive even during the Great Recession by setting real estate goals that moved the needle What drives Euan to set big goals and then laser-focus on achieving them, and why he believes in giving as much as he can in all aspects of his life Why Euan attributes his success to focusing on the positives and the opportunities he has been able to create for himself in a new country Why making a bigger impact in his life and bringing more value to others is much more important than selling more properties and making more money Why “the treadmill” no longer holds any appeal to Euan, and how he made key changes in his life to feel more fulfilled by his work How Euan realized the importance of having a plan for the future so that he isn’t still on the treadmill selling real estate at age 65 What advice Euan would offer to real estate professionals looking for the success he has achieved, and why you shouldn’t overthink things and instead just take the dive Why being completely authentic and focusing on creating value and making a difference for others is what has made the biggest difference in Euan’s life Why Euan believes that leading by example and not asking others to do things you aren’t willing to do yourself is the key to life Why personal branding is an important leverage point and asset, and why working for a forward-thinking, innovative agency is a point of pride for Kristina Setting Real Estate Goals Euan Graham is a real estate agent who was named the 2011 Denver Metro Rookie of the Year. Euan is also a respected influencer in the real estate industry, a mentor and thought leader, and a true innovator. He was also the very first guest I ever had on the Pursuing Freedom podcast, all the way back in episode one! Euan is originally from Galashiels, Scotland, but he now lives in Colorado with his wife. Euan has an incredible passion for serving others. Coupled with his fearlessness, Euan found tremendous success when he began his career in real estate in 2010, even in the midst of the recession. He did this by setting real estate goals that were big, lofty and brazen! In his encore visit to Pursuing Freedom, Euan shares how his goals have evolved with his career, and he explains why he charts his success not in properties sold but in serving others and making a difference in people’s lives. Being Fearless My friend Euan is an extraordinary person who believes in diving in head first, without allowing fears of failure to hold him back. This mindset is powerful and has served him well in his career, and he has been able to achieve amazing things because he focuses not on the potential to fail but on bringing value to everyone in his life, from his clients to his family and friends. That passion, fearlessness and laser-focus allowed Euan to move to a new country, build a new life and new career, and thrive. Setting Real Estate Goals That Matter Euan has reached another transition period in his career, one in which he is ready to “get off the treadmill” and begin focusing not on more work but on more fulfilling work. He has begun the transition toward thought leadership and mentoring other agents and focusing on doing the things he wants to do rather than feeling as though he needs to take on any work that comes his way. Euan says his ambition is to focus on what makes him feel fulfilled by maximizing the impact he has on the lives of others. By following his passion and setting real estate goals that aren’t about chasing numbers but are about serving others to the maximum of his ability, Euan is shifting his focus toward making a lasting difference. As Euan said during his interview, his goal is to avoid being stuck and unable to retire. By surrounding himself with the right people and by building a reputation for giving his all to the people he serves, Euan is able to make this transition with confidence and pursue his freedom. How powerful is that? I’m honored to have such an amazing friend in Eua Graham, and I think we can all learn from the important life lessons Euan has recognized over the course of his career. About Euan Graham Originally from Galashiels, Scotland, Euan moved to Colorado in 2008 with his wife Mia. They are now established in the great community of Beacon Point in southeast Aurora with their daughter, Isla, and son, Finlay. As Denver Metro Association of Realtors 2019-2020 Chairman, his many volunteer responsibilities include traveling and representing the Denver Metro Area, as well as staying on top of real estate legislation at the capitol. Named the 2011 Denver Metro Rookie of the Year, Euan has been extremely successful in the Colorado real estate market. He is a respected industry influencer, innovator, thought leader and mentor. His entrepreneurial spirit, networking skills, and negotiation techniques have helped him build his reputation. Euan prides himself on building strong relationships in order to provide the highest level of service to his clients. Reiki and Healing Touch are two complementary healing therapies that are non-invasive yet buttress you mentally, emotionally, and physically. They balance your energy and help you sleep better. They allow you to relax and handle stress with calm and ease. These therapies are not meant to be used instead of medical treatment, but they are great to use with traditional Western treatments to make you more resilient. One of the conditions both therapies seem to have a great effect on is Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD). Consistent practice of Reiki and Healing Touch helps reduce the severity of PTSD. If you've had cancer, you know the symptoms of this condition all too well. The best part about Reiki and Healing Touch is that there are no side effects! Only peace and calm. Sandy Priester has been practicing Reiki for thirty years and is the CEO and Founder of LifeSpark, a non-profit providing Reiki and Healing Touch at no cost to cancer patients, survivors, and caretakers throughout the Denver Metro Area and several hospitals in other parts of Colorado. If you or someone you know could benefit from their services, or you want to volunteer with them, look them up at www.lifesparknow.org. Functional Medicine Practice: What You Will Learn: How Dr. Barter's practice has been impacted by COVID from a clinical and patient management perspective The mental and emotional impact that COVID has made on Dr. Barter's patients Treatments Dr. Barter's functional medicine practice uses to help manage mood and headspace How Dr. Barter communicates the effects of the pandemic to her patients to help them better understand treatment options How Dr. Barter addresses mold and treatment procedures with her patients Long term health problems that mold can cause Dr. Barter's work with neurotransmitters Post-Pandemic Challenges in Functional Medicine Dr. Ann Barter is the owner and Clinical Director of Alternative Family Medicine and Chiropractic, a Colorado-based functional medicine practice serving the Denver Metro Area. She is also host of the Fearless Health podcast and a thought leader in both patient-facing and practitioner-facing work in the functional medicine field. Dr. Barter joins us in this episode of The FM Shift to share her journey and talk about the new landscape of functional medicine amidst the global pandemic. Addressing the New Normal COVID has significantly impacted the way we operate, and Dr. Barter has seen an increase in difficult cases come through her functional medicine practice. Some of them are more difficult due to this ‘new normal' and the added stressors of the day-to-day. But the vast majority of these cases are becoming increasingly difficult because of the mental and emotional toll that COVID has taken on patients. From the toxic news cycles to the frustrating mask ordinances, people are experiencing significantly higher levels of stress and anxiety that are impacting their health in a profound way. Managing Headspace Dr. Barter has taken it upon herself to actively manage her patients' headspace, because mood and mindset directly affect her ability to treat them for other ailments. Her functional medicine practice uses a number of different treatments to accomplish this without the use of risky pharmaceuticals. Cortisol is a tonic for the adrenal gland that helps calm patients' down. Mood Food and Liquid Serenity affect your serotonin and GABA pathways. She also uses organic acids testing to get the full picture of her patients' headspace and determine the best course of action for treatment. The new normal is going to weigh heavily on our patients for some time, but there are many viable treatment options we can offer to limit its effects on their health. Thanks to Joyce McCown for sharing their work on Unsplash. About Dr. Ann Barter Dr. Ann-Marie Barter is a chiropractor who serves Niwot, Longmont, Boulder, Lyons, Louisville, Lafayette and the surrounding communities in the Denver Metro Area. She has taken an interest in optimizing health by incorporating diet counseling, whole food supplementation, herbal therapy, wellness and lifestyle coaching, scar tissue work, deep tissue massage, and exercise programs. Dr. Barter has completed the 18 hours required for certification by The Running Clinic for New Trends in the Prevention of Running Injuries. This training course has been delivered more than a hundred times, on 5 continents! It has been developed using the most recent scientific evidence, it questions several current unjustified practices. The techniques learned in this class help Dr. Barter better assess her patients and aids in making recommendations for avoiding future running-related injuries. Medicine is a second career and passion for Dr. Barter. Initially, she worked at Lockheed Martin Aeronautics in Fort Worth, Texas negotiating major systems for their fighter jet program. She excelled at difficult negotiations and was able to hit challenging company goals. Dr. Barter is passionate about chiropractic, helping people get out of pain and reach their maximum potential. Chiropractic changed Dr. Barter's life. When she was initially introduced to chiropractic (in her early 20's) she was skeptical. The more educated she became in the art of chiropractic, the more interested and intrigued she became, until she finally asked for an adjustment from a family friend who practices chiropractic. The treatment was like magic. He not only adjusted her spine but also her feet, hips, knees, wrists, and elbows. She felt new and light, like a better version of herself. He also took extra time to put her on a specific dietary protocol and nutritional regimen, from which she realized major positive changes. She excelled academically, experienced less gastrointestinal upset, reduced brain-fog, lost weight, and started to enjoy activities like hiking, because her foot mechanics had been changed. Dr. Barter has been active in athletics her entire life. For 17 years Dr. Barter was a competitive dancer. These days she can be found dancing, skiing, running, performing yoga, biking, hiking, lifting weights or walking her Rhodesian Ridgeback, Ritz. She knows what it takes to be an athlete and she finds great satisfaction in helping athletes reach their maximum potential. Dr. Barter uses chiropractic care to improve the health and wellness in all areas of patient's lives, whether they are having problems with back or neck pain, or just want to start feeling better when they wake up in the morning. Dr. Barter takes a “whole person” approach to chiropractic care, which means looking for the underlying causes of disease, discomfort, and pain, as opposed to just treating the symptoms. Many seemingly unrelated symptoms often arise from imbalances in the spinal column, extremities, biochemical disturbances, and stress and Dr. Barter will be able to determine the root of the problem and create a personalized chiropractic and wellness plan to suit each patient's individual needs. Dr. Ann-Marie Barter is passionate about helping you and your family. She has a broad range of diagnostic skills and enjoys working with women and men of all ages including pregnant women, kids, and geriatric patients. She is dedicated to appropriately assessing your condition, building an individualized treatment program, and optimizing your health. Todd Narlinger, founder and owner of Madison & Company Properties, is a highly acclaimed, award-winning Realtor in the Denver Metro Area. He began his 25 year career as a Broker Associate with RE/MAX Masters, and in 1995 was honored as RE/MAX Masters Rookie of the Year. Since 1998, Todd has sold over $25 million dollars of real estate every year. In addition, Todd has also successfully marketed and sold new development projects including: 1 Pearl Street (One Pearl), 75 Emerson Street (Abitare), 740 Sherman (ICON 740), 195 S. Pennsylvania (ICON 195), and 1107 Elizabeth Street (ICON 1107). In the summer of 2008, Todd founded his own firm, Madison & Company Properties, a boutique firm which has grown to over 160 agents and 7 Denver metro area offices. Madison is currently ranked #6 in Denver brokerages for sales volume. Today, Todd continues to distinguish himself as Broker/Owner/Founder of Madison & Company Properties. Madison & Company Properties began with a vision for a brokerage with a collaborative, team atmosphere that provides clients with honest and knowledgeable associates and first class services. Every day, Todd works hard to maintain this top level of service among his brokers, always striving to be the best in the business. For this reason, Madison & Company Properties has earned the prestigious Denver Post Top Work Places award for the past 6 years in a row, and in the last two years Madison has won #1 mid-size companies. What You Will Learn: Todd Narlinger’s story and journey to opening a brokerage Why agents need to go back to the basics in an evolving marketplace What has changed for agents and brokers, and how to navigate those changes How Todd achieved a high level of success so quickly  The benefits and drawbacks of new technology in real estate Understanding the five sources of business Why you should consider doubling down on relationships Todd’s take on perseverance  Additional Resources: Website: https://www.madisonprops.com/ Twitter: @madisonprops Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/MadisonPropsDenver/ LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/company/madison-&-company-properties-ltd-/ Book Recommendation:  Shoe Dog by: Phil Knight Free to Focus: A Total Productivity System to Achieve More by Doing Less by: Michael Hyatt Speakers: Reggie Rivers Larry Kendall Back to the Basics After Todd Narlinger graduated from CU, he took up an apprenticeship with his dad, a top real estate broker in the Denver Metro area. The early exposure to a network of high volume producers provided Todd with a deep-seated drive for success. He was forced to learn quickly and inspired to pull his weight in a group of veterans who were succeeding at a high level. But he also recognized real estate as a gateway to entrepreneurship, which gave him something bigger to work for.    Todd now heads Madison & Company Properties, but even at the pinnacle of his real estate career, he relies on the same fundamental skills that brought him 25 years of success. Today, he passes them on to the 160 agents on his team, because in an industry littered with distractions, you need to focus on tactics and strategies that have always worked. Go back to the basics: who knows you; who likes you; who trusts you, and who are you in the flow with? Adapt to Change As you know, I am a big advocate of the age old strategy of picking up the phone. Today, a lot of agents don’t talk or meet until they get to the closing table. Technology has helped us because document changes can be made with ease, forms can be delivered and signed online, and communication is extremely efficient. But that doesn’t mean we can neglect our relationships and let the process become an impersonal transaction. Technology is great as a supplementary tool, but you will find the greatest success by focusing on good old fashioned relationship building. Double Down on Relationships The market has changed, but the value of connection has not. Todd isn’t successful because he uses every digital marketing tool available; he is successful because he puts an unrivaled amount of time and energy into generating meaningful face-to-face connections. By no means is that easy to do, but all of you have the opportunity. Skillset, mindset, and action are the pillars of success in real estate. Double down on your relationships and go prove you’re willing to work for the results you’ve been seeking!

Dr. Barter has completed the 18 hours required for certification by The Running Clinic for: New Trends in the Prevention of Running Injuries. This training course has been delivered more than a hundred times, on 5 continents! It has been developed using the most recent scientific evidence, it questions several current unjustified practices. The techniques learned in this class help Dr. Barter better assess her patients and aids in making recommendations for avoiding future running-related injuries. Ann's Bio Continued:Medicine is a second career and passion for Dr. Barter. Initially, she worked at Lockheed Martin Aeronautics in Fort Worth, Texas negotiating major systems for their fighter jet program. She excelled at difficult negotiations and was able to hit challenging company goals. Ann is passionate about chiropractic, helping people get out of pain and reach their maximum potential. Chiropractic changed Dr. Barter’s life. When she was in initially introduced to chiropractic (in her early 20’s) she was skeptical. Ann uses chiropractic care to improve the health and wellness in all areas of patient’s lives, whether they are having problems with back or neck pain, or just want to start feeling better when they wake up in the morning. Barter will be able to determine the root of the problem and create a personalized chiropractic and wellness plan to suit each patient’s individual needs.
