My guest today is Jennifer Sey, an American author, filmmaker, business executive and a retired artistic gymnast, who was the 1986 USA National Champion. Jennifer began working at Levi's in 1999, rising to Chief Marketing Officer and then Global Brand President.  She was fired from Levi's last year after speaking out against the lockdowns and specifically the harms caused to children in San Francisco; Public schools were closed for 19 months during Covid in San Francisco for 50,000+ children: the longest closure in the world, while (privileged) private schools opened up in 2020. Most of the affected children are underprivileged, and for them Jennifer fought while exposing the hypocrisy of the "Liberal Democrats" who pretend to advocate for equality & equity, and exposing the woke culture, both of Levis and the public. Jennifer refused an exit grant of 1 million dollars (!!!) in exchange for her silence, because her story and her mission are more important than money. Her recent book, “Levi's Unbuttoned,” tells the inspirational story of her corporate career, search for authenticity, and ultimate refusal to bow to the woke mob. Jane has worked at Estée Lauder for 26 years – 24 of which she spent working on the brand and marketing aspects of the business. While working as the Global Brand President of Clinique, Jane saw the power of data to drive all aspects of the business, motivating her to transition into her current role. Estée Lauder Companies is one of the world's leading manufacturers and marketers of luxury skincare, makeup, fragrance, and hair care products. It encompasses a house of about 30 brands including their flagship brand Estée Lauder, as well as other brands such as Clinique, Crème de la Mer, MAC, Jo Malone, Aveda, Le Labo, Bobbi Brown, Origins, Dr.Jart+, Too Faced cosmetics, and more. The beauty giant was founded by Jane's grandmother, Estée Lauder, over 75 years ago. Before there were data and analytics to pull from, Estée Lauder would gather information about potential consumers by analyzing women's bathrooms, paying close attention to details such as décor and the colors of their tiles. She then used this information to design aspirational product packaging that would elevate its surroundings. “In the beginning, we were a one-woman research company, and that one woman was Estée Lauder.”Today the company has a wealth of digital and in-store data. Jane and her team use this data to understand consumers' aspirations better, gain insight into how different consumers use their products, and spot emerging trends in the cosmetic industry. This information helps them to respond to trends and tailor their products and messaging to meet consumers' unique needs and aspirations. As Estée Lauder's Chief Data Officer, Jane's biggest obstacle resides in deciding how to best utilize the ample data she has access to. Another obstacle lies in determining how to strike a balance between satisfying consumer needs today and investing in the future of the company. “You want to be able to use the data you have to create incredible opportunities, but also think about how to unlock the data for the future, and how to set up the foundational data sets, and data containers, if you will, to be able to create this quick analysis of the future.” Jane believes the future is promising for those seeking roles as data scientists within the cosmetics industry. A veteran of the retail industry with more than 30 years of leadership across retail, marketing, sales and product, Kevin Bailey was appointed to lead Vans as its Global Brand President in March 2022. In his role, Bailey oversees the strategic direction of Vans' global business, while also enabling regional teams to deliver local strategies to drive continued international growth. In addition to this, Bailey also currently serves as the Executive Vice President for the Asia Pacific region of Vans' parent company, VF Corporation. Throughout his 17 years within VF, Bailey has held a series of roles with increasing responsibility across the organization. He most recently served as President, Asia-Pacific Region and Emerging Brands for VF and was responsible for leading VF's Asia-Pacific regional platform as well as VF's global Emerging Brands platform of brands such as Altra®, JanSport® and Smartwool®. Prior to this, Bailey served as President of VF's Action Sports Coalition, and the company's Canada, Mexico, and Central/South America businesses. As a long-time retail leader with vast industry knowledge, Bailey returns to Vans where he previously served as President from 2009 to 2016, during which time revenue for the brand more than doubled to $2.2 billion. Throughout his almost three decades within the industry, Bailey has held a number of leadership roles through his career, specifically serving as the Executive Vice President of Lucky Brand, a division of Fifth and Pacific, and also the Director of Retail Operations for Nike, where he oversaw Nike's direct-to-consumer businesses. Jennifer Sey spent more than twenty years at Levis Strauss and Company, rising through the ranks to Chief Marketing Office and then Global Brand President. In 2020, she was in line to become CEO of the company when the Covid pandemic hit and she found herself working from home with four kids out out school. Soon, she became frustrated by school closures and puzzled about lockdown polices for kids in general. And she started speaking up about it. This did not sit well Levis and Jennifer was eventually forced out of the company — and offered a million dollar severance package in exchange for singing a non-disclosure agreement. But Jennifer was so committed to speaking out that she turned down the deal. In this interview, Jennifer and Meghan talk about how social media has blurred the lines between professional comportment and personal beliefs. They ask what it means when corporations take public political stances, how to tell a genuine expression of company values from virtue signaling, and whether corporate wokeness actually helps sell products. In 2013, Jen became the global chief marketing officer for the Levi's brand and, in 2018, was appointed senior vice president and chief marketing officer, overseeing marketing for the company's portfolio of brands. Jen has been named one of AdAge's "Top 40 Marketers Under 40" one of Brand Innovators' "Top 50 Women in Marketing," Billboard Magazine's "Top 25 Most Powerful People in Music and Fashion," receiver of the CMO Social Responsibility Award and she was featured on Forbes CMO Next List: 50 Chief Marketers Who Are Redefining the CMO role. As a child, Jen led an intense life of dedication, challenge, and competition. She won the U.S. National Gymnastics Championship title in 1986, less than one year after having suffered a devastating injury at the 1985 World Championships. As a result, the U.S. Olympic Committee named her Gymnastics' Athlete of the Year. Jen retired after eight years on the national team and went on to study at Stanford University. In 2008, Jen released a memoir, “Chalked Up,” a New York Times E-Book Best Seller detailing her triumphs and struggles within the world of competitive gymnastics. Jen's book led to her producing a Netflix documentary on the investigation and ultimate conviction of Larry Nassar and the decades-long abusive culture of USA Gymnastics. This was a pretty wide-ranging conversation and Jen really over delivered on the leadership advice here, focusing a lot on how climbing the corporate ladder is not always a recipe for success in corporate America, as well as details on how Levi's weathered the storm of COVID-19 and keys to establishing an authentic company culture.  Here are some key takeaways from this conversation with Jen. Focus on expansion over upward progression. This is a great piece of career advice. In addition to her executive position at a Fortune 500 brand, Jen is a former elite athlete, published author, and successful documentary producer. She has had accomplishments in many disparate arenas, and each experience seems to have compounded to develop her professionally in ways that serve just about everything she does. This may run counter to the 'Jack of all trades' debate, but Jen makes it work beautifully. When Jen found herself overly focused on climbing the corporate ladder, she frequently felt stuck. What Jen found to be a much more effective and enjoyable strategy for her career progression was to focus on experiences and projects that would expand her skill sets and knowledge base. Doing so made her a much more well-rounded professional with the ability to pivot, adapt, and learn new skills, all of which served her tremendously as a leader. Bring a unified version of yourself to everything you do. When publishing her first book, Jen's initial instinct was to be silent about it out of concern it could make her seem less dedicated to her corporate work. As her book's popularity blew up and she began doing a robust amount of media interviews, ultimately, she could no longer hide it. What ended up happening when people found out, though, was the opposite of what she had feared; her new accomplishment was extremely impressive to many people and made her more synonymous with being outspoken, creative, and downright more interesting, all of which ultimately helped her career. So if you're accomplishing a lot with your side hustles, don't hide them because they may just help boost your corporate persona. Creating an environment for true selves is the key to authenticity, and it starts at the top.  Leaders who are forthright about their own feelings give others permission to do the same.
