Toni Ko, beauty mogul and founder of NYX Cosmetics, just turned 50 this year. She's changed her perspective on life and her experiences, but she's not ready to put away her lipstick just yet. After climbing Mount Kiliminjaro, in a full face of makeup, it seems she is just getting started. Toni Ko was born in South Korea and immigrated to the United States with her family when she was 13 years old. She grew up in the beauty business working in her mother's cosmetic store selling perfume. Toni founded NYX Cosmetics in 1999 at the age of 25. In its first year alone, NYX Cosmetics earned $2 million. NYX quickly became successful and in 2014 was acquired by L'Oréal. Falling into a deep depression after the acquisition, Toni did what she knew best and founded several new companies. Today, Toni runs Bespoke Beauty Brands, a company that helps launch new beauty brands. Thanks for listening! Her family emigrated from Korea when she was 13 years old, and serial entrepreneur Toni Ko has since founded three different–each totally fascinating–companies. Her first, NYX Cosmetics, made $4 million in its first year, and, within a decade, was in beauty aisles of Target nationwide. But with growth, came some sacrifices–and, within years, she sold it to L'Oreal for a reported $500 million. A non-compete agreement meant Ko was locked out of the beauty industry for five years, a time during which she learned some of her most important life and entrepreneurial lessons–including how to stop worrying and focus on finding simple solutions to her own complex problems. Host Christine Lagorio-Chafkin explores with Ko how she coped with selling her company, what she created (sunglasses company Perverse) in the meantime, and how she's back with a new company that's creating brand new cosmetics in partnership with influencers, celebrities, and designers. It's called Bespoke Beauty Brands, and for Toni, building it came with its own new learning curve.

Toni Ko was just 25 when she founded the affordable beauty brand NYX Cosmetics. With $250,000 in seed money from her parents, the Korean-born entrepreneur started out small, with makeup pencils, but made $2 million in sales her first year. After selling the company in 2014 to L'Oreal for reportedly $500 million, Toni knew retirement wasn't what came next. She sat down with Alli and Michael to swap entrepreneurial war stories and share how she revived her sense of self post-acquisition with a sunglass company, real estate investments, and venture firm for women-led companies. I am happy to share with you the biggest change in my life and NYX. As the founder of NYX Cosmetics, I have dedicated the past 15 years to the success of NYX cosmetics. NYX had been my entire life and the only life I knew, however, I just closed a deal with L'Oreal on July 30,2014 to acquire NYX Cosmetics. I am now closing this chapter of my life and moving on to the next.As the founder of NYX Cosmetics, my job is to develop a makeup line that beats the fashion trends to the finish line, has extraordinary pigmentation and most importantly, carries an affordable price tag.
