This week Roger welcomes Tim Goeglein, the vice president of external and government relations for Focus on the Family, a Christian ministry and nonprofit organization. They discuss how the cultural and moral shifts of the 1960s shaped many of the challenges American society faces today, how the seeds for these changes were planted earlier in the 20th century by progressives like Woodrow Wilson and John Dewey and how the Great Society programs of the 1960s (despite good intentions) led to unintended consequences that undermined traditional American societal institutions. Plus, why the path forward lies in grassroots efforts to rebuild civic institutions at the local level rather than relying on top-down government solutions.Prior to joining Focus on the Family, Goeglein was a special assistant to President George W. Bush and deputy director of the White House Office of Public Liaison, conducting outreach for conservative and faith-based groups. During his White House tenure, he played an integral role in nominating Supreme Court justices Samuel Alito and John G. Roberts and was also integral in helping to establish the Office of Faith-Based and Community Initiatives. He's written four books, his latest title being, “Stumbling Toward Utopia: How the 1960s Turned Into a National Nightmare and How We Can Revive the American Dream,” which was published in September of 2024 by Fidelis Publishing. The Liberty + Leadership Podcast is hosted by TFAS president Roger Ream and produced by Podville Media. Goeglein breaks down how radicalism in "overdrive" in the 1960's spurred a cultural revolution that would have lasting impacts on the nation. While key figures like Margaret Sanger, Roger Baldwin, and countless others died before they could see the effects of their radical left-wing ideology on the country, their efforts to upend the American way of life have proved fruitful — but not all hope is lost, Goeglein explains. You can find Goeglein's book, Stumbling Toward Utopia: How the 1960s Turned Into a National Nightmare and How We Can Revive the American Dream, here. American institutions are less trusted than ever before, our society is deeply divided, and much of the world is in turmoil. The problem isn’t religion, atheism, or ideology, per se. Rather, the real culprit — and one that receives far too little attention in public discourse — is the widespread embrace by social activists of utopianism, a zealous belief in Read More ›

On today's episode of "The Daily Signal Podcast," Tim Goeglein discusses his new book, "Stumbling Toward Utopia: How the 1960s Turned Into a National Nightmare and How We Can Revive the American Dream." Goeglein's book explores the dramatic cultural, social, and political shifts of the 1960s and how those changes continue to impact American society today. “The reason we're in the spiritual crisis that we are in across all of our institutions is because of the moral and social revolution of the 1960s,” he tells The Daily Signal. Goeglien, who serves as vice president of external and government relations for Focus on the Family, explores what he calls the many "stumbles" of the 1960s—from morality and religion to education and entertainment. “Progressives ultimately believe in the perfectibility of man and that it can all be socially engineered in places like Washington and Hollywood," Goeglein says. "But I demonstrate in 'Stumbling Toward Utopia' that this is a bunch of false promises.” He also shares his thoughts on how America can restore its moral foundation and revive the American Dream. “I believe already the seeds are being planted for a restoration," Goeglein says. "There are all kinds of things happening, and I believe that the American Dream will be restored.” Listen to hear his insights on education, family values, and the role of government in shaping the future.

Sign-up for my free 20-day devotional, The Word Before Work Foundations, at http://TWBWFoundations.com--Series: The Most Excellent WayDevotional: 5 of 5I will show you the most excellent way…love…keeps no record of wrongs. (1 Corinthians 12:31, 13:5)Tim Goeglein collapsed in his White House office. His secret life of plagiarism had been found out and the guilt and shame were literally crippling.A couple days after his resignation, Goeglein received a call. His former boss, President George W. Bush, wanted to see him.Terrified, Goeglein entered the Oval Office, looked President Bush in the eye, and began his groveling apology: “Sir, I owe you…” But the President wouldn't let Goeglein finish his apology. “You're forgiven,” Bush said.Goeglein was certain he misunderstood what the President said, so he attempted to apologize twice more until Bush said, “You know, Tim, grace and mercy are real. I have known grace and mercy in my own life and you're forgiven. We can talk about all of that [referring to Goeglein's plagiarism] or we can talk about the last eight years.”Throughout this series, we've been studying what Paul called “the most excellent way” to live and work, chronicled in the famous “Love Chapter” of 1 Corinthians 13. Today, we conclude with a look at Paul's words that love “keeps no record of wrongs,” a truth beautifully exemplified by President Bush. But the ultimate example of course—and the ultimate motivation for us to keep “no record of wrongs”—is the love God has shown us by removing our sins “as far as the east is from the west” (Psalm 103:11-12).Now, keeping “no record of wrongs” is not the same as “forgive and forget.” For starters, it's impossible to literally forget many sins committed against us. It's also unwise. If you're a principal of a school and a teacher is accused of sexual abuse, you're called to forgive them, but it would be the height of folly to allow that teacher to come back to work the next day.So what does it look like to keep “no record of wrongs” at work? At a minimum, it looks like extending forgiveness to the wrongdoer. But I think Christ's example leads us to do more than that. I think it calls us to pray for the wrongdoer and their flourishing, to refuse to consider past wrongdoings when evaluating someone's current performance, and to avoid sharing details of a co-worker's sins and shortcomings with those who don't truly need to know.Does it sound impossible to live and work in this loving way? It is apart from Christ in us. May we abide in him daily so that we're so filled up with a sense of his love for us that we can't help but extend the overflow of that love to those we work with. For this is “the most excellent way.”Jordan P.S. If you want to go deeper on what true biblical forgiveness looks like at work, listen to Tim Keller and I discuss that topic here.
"I'm guilty" is not something you hear from the mouths of those who work in politics very often. But Tim Goeglein mustered the courage and character to say them … and that rare immediate honesty taught him valuable lessons to move beyond his self-inflicted crucible. In his interview with Warwick, Goeglein confesses how he on several occasions plagiarized the work of others for a column he wrote for his hometown newspaper while he was serving as a special assistant to President George W. Bush. You hear us talk often on the show about how forgiveness – from others and to ourselves – is a critical step to turning what's been broken into breakthrough. You'll want to listen to Goeglein recount how the Leader of the Free World forgave him for his actions and the bad press they caused the White House. Goeglein has continued to live a life of significance, serving as the D.C.-based vice president of external relations for the Christian nonprofit Focus on the Family. His top takeaway from his journey? “Failure reintroduces you to yourself.” To explore Beyond the Crucible assets, including our free Life of Significance assessment, visit www.beyondthecrucible.com Have a question or comment? Is there hope for America? Author of the book, Toward a More Perfect Union, Tim Goeglein's resume reads like a Who's Who in American Politics and Faith. His position in the White House, work with presidents, comprehension of political architecture, and appreciation for American history make him a fascinating and influential man. In the cultural trenches, Goeglein understands the constitutional, cultural, and historic illiteracy that plagues our United States, recognizing that “united” seems to be missing from every action, at every level. But more significant is Goeglein's knowledgeable hope that offers solutions for the hyperpolarization of America and a dependable course toward a more perfect union. Goeglein's stories are riveting. His comprehension of history and of the role of national sin in our failings will reignite your humility, gratitude, and hope for America as he challenges and reminds us that our nation needs prayer, that faith and freedom go together, and that God has a better way forward. Americans' lack of historical knowledge is crippling the nation, says Timothy Goeglein, a senior official with the Christian group Focus on the Family. In his new book “Toward a More Perfect Union: The Moral and Cultural Case for Teaching the Great American Story," Goeglein discusses a survey conducted among public high school students that revealed that only 3% could pass a U.S. citizenship test. Those students surveyed are adults today, Goeglein explains, adding, this means many Americans today “are woefully ignorant of not only our history and culture, but our system of government.”Goeglein, who formerly served as a special assistant to President George W. Bush, tracks the lack of knowledge of American history back to the late radical historian Howard Zinn's influence on American history curriculums. Zinn's “goal was not to teach facts, but opinions,” he says. Goeglein joins “The Daily Signal Podcast” to discuss why teaching American history is so closely linked to the formation of a flourishing society, and what can be done to restore accuracy and integrity to history classrooms across the country. I'm very excited to share our "Editor's Summer Picks!" series for Finding Brave! Throughout the next six weeks, we'll be re-releasing 6 top shows that are the special favorites from our editor Matt Mawhinney and his awesome production team at PodAssist. "We’ve made a social contract to come into this organization, however, contracts can be broken. Whichever direction it gets broken, we have to take the responsibility and either take care of ourselves and get out of it, or help fix it. There’s really very little in between, and we’re not supposed to see how much crap we can take.” - Andrea Goeglein Asking for help, especially in the workplace, often feels like we’re waving a neon sign of weakness. However, today’s expert guest -- who literally wrote the book on being brave regarding asking for help -- explains how asking for the right kind of assistance is essential to reducing stress, positively impacting our results and building a foundation for strong relationships. Dr. Andrea Goeglein has a fascinating personal and professional story, complete with important and powerful lessons learned, starting with what she realized after altering the truth of her age (of 14) to land a job at a Wall Street brokerage firm. By 24, she opened her first operating business – a Haagen-Dazs ice cream store in Reno, Nevada. Many businesses and a PhD in Organizational Psychology later, Andrea has experienced enough stress and anxiety to be an expert. Today she is a Success Catalyst and known as Dr. Success™. Andrea is the founder, curator and author of the Don’t Die™ self-development collection of books. Her latest book is Don’t Die Waiting to Be Brave. As an expert in Applied Positive Psychology, she is her clients’ success Sherpa, guiding them as they climb the mountain of success. In today’s Finding Brave you’ll not only know when to ask for help, but who to ask and how to do it in order to flourish in your professional life. The choice to ask for help is ours, and we will create even more bravery and success when we know how much choice we really have. To learn more about today's guest, visit: https://servingsuccess.com
Tim Goeglein and Craig Osten’s book, “American Restoration: How Faith, Family, and Personal Sacrifice Can Heal our Nation”, addresses solutions to cultural problems that our society is facing in religious liberty today. Learn more at FirstLiberty.org/Briefing. Tim Goeglein and Craig Osten just released their new book, “American Restoration.” It’s a critical examination of our time and place, recognizing the cultural battles our society faces and proposing common sense solutions to the problems Tim and Craig identify. I’m particularly taken by their evaluation of the state of religious liberty in our country today. There’s a recognition throughout the chapter that there is a clash between world views and religious liberty seems to be losing ground. Their solution is simple, yet profound. “If we are to restore religious liberty, we must engage,” they say. “We must be involved. This is a time for a historic flood tide of faithful men and women to get involved in the media, in culture, and in public policy debates at the local, state, regional, and national levels.” That’s both vitally true and should be obvious to any reader paying close attention. But, here’s the payoff. After calling for involvement at every level, they conclude, “But in doing so, we cannot compromise the core beliefs of our faith if we are to successfully restore America’s spiritual formation and God-given freedoms.” Compromise erodes freedoms and that is not less true in the battle for religious freedom. The loss of religious freedom is itself a loss of freedom. And, at the same time, the more gains for the free exercise of religion we achieve, the more free our nation becomes. The founders understood that. My friends Tim Goeglein and Craig Osten do too. Perhaps you ought to also read their new book, “American Restoration: How Faith, Family, and Personal Sacrifice Can Heal our Nation.” To learn how First Liberty is protecting religious liberty for all Americans, visit FirstLiberty.org.

America has hit the proverbial fork in the road. We can continue to go down the road of social strife and despair, or we can choose the road that leads us back to the founding principles of life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness, which our nation’s founding fathers spoke of so eloquently in the Declaration of Independence. In American Restoration, Tim Goeglein and Craig Osten examine every aspect of American culture and offer a map of the road to national and spiritual renewal. The objective is to provoke a national dialogue on each of these topics while winsomely convincing hearts and minds that the best days for America are still to come.Timothy S. Goeglein is Vice President of External Relations for Focus on the Family. Formerly, he served as a special assistant to President George W. Bush and as a deputy director of the White House Office of Public Liaison.
