Podcast: The PrOTect OT Cybersecurity Podcast (LS 31 · TOP 5% what is this?)Episode: Michael Holcomb: The Journey from IT to OT and Strengthening IT-OT PartnershipPub date: 2023-11-16About Michael Holcomb: Michael Holcomb is the Fellow of Cybersecurity and the ICS/OT Cybersecurity Global Lead for Fluor, a prominent engineering, procurement, and construction company. In his current role, he focuses on securing vast ICS/OT environments, ranging from power plants and commuter rail to manufacturing facilities and refineries. Currently pursuing his Master's thesis on Programmable Logic Controllers' attack surface with the SANS Technology Institute, he holds multiple cyber security and ICS/OT certifications like CISSP, GRID, GICSP, GCIP, GPEN, GCIH, and ISA 62443. Beyond his professional endeavors, he founded the UpstateSC ISSA Chapter and BSides Greenville conference, and authored and taught cyber security courses at Greenville Technical College, earning him the CyberSC's MG Lester D. Eisner Award for Cyber Excellence in Leadership for South Carolina in 2023. In this episode, Aaron and Michael Holcomb discuss:○ Closing the IT-OT skills gap in cybersecurity○ Navigating the path to cybersecurity expertise○ The intersection of OT cybersecurity and networking○ The evolving landscape of OT cybersecurity Key Takeaways:○ Bridging the gap between IT professionals learning to think like engineers and OT specialists embracing cybersecurity not only enhances collaboration but also strengthens our ability to secure critical infrastructures, a journey that demands time, dedication, and a shared commitment to a safer digital future.○ Embracing a multidisciplinary approach and fostering collaboration between IT and OT professionals, along with hands-on experience and continuous learning, is the key to breaking into the rapidly evolving field of cybersecurity, transforming passion and knowledge into practical expertise.○ Mastering networking fundamentals is the key to bridging the gap between IT and engineering, enabling the design of resilient systems that prevent costly operational disruptions, and emphasizing the need for continuous learning and collaboration in this dynamic field.○ The integration of IT technologies into OT without adequate expertise has led to vulnerabilities; expecting OT professionals to handle cybersecurity is akin to asking a plumber to do electrical work. While progress is being made, the industry must prepare for a potentially catastrophic event to truly acknowledge the importance of cybersecurity in OT. "One of the things that's sad to me about the OT cybersecurity industry, and this even goes for folks that are new to the industry and even some of the old players that have been out there for 20, 30, maybe 40 years plus, is that there's still, in some respects, not a lot of concern around what it's going to take for people to take cybersecurity and OT seriously. And so there's going to be that event one day, where people are going to die, right? That is going to finally force people to take cybersecurity and OT seriously." — Michael Holcomb Connect with Michael Holcomb: Email: michael.holcomb@fluor.comWebsite: www.fluor.comLinkedIn: www.linkedin.com/in/mikeholcombYouTube: https://www.youtube.com/@utilsec Connect with Aaron:LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/aaronccrow Learn more about Industrial Defender:Website: https://www.industrialdefender.com/podcast LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/company/industrial-defender-inc/Twitter: https://twitter.com/iDefend_ICSYouTube: https://www.youtube.com/@industrialdefender7120 Audio production by Turnkey Podcast Productions. Diffusé le 24 mai 2022 Générique : Fast and wild/EdRecords Post-production : Julien Badoil/Studio Juno

Law firms are considered by many hackers to be soft targets with a wealth of valuable information. Data from social security numbers, credit cards, and client confidences is enough to make the criminal mind salivate with malicious intent. Between 31-45% and 10-20% of firms have been infected by spyware or experienced security breaches respectively. But what can a private practitioner or law firm do to prevent these trespasses on their networks? In this episode of The Florida Bar Podcast, host Adriana Linares welcomes cyber security expert Sherri Davidoff to discuss the dangers to data that exist for law firms today. To begin their dialog, they define what ransomware is and tell us why so many firms give in to its extortion.Tune in to learn what practitioners can do to counteract or mitigate some of the risks. Spam filters, employee training, role-based access controls, and anti-virus software are among many countermeasures available for even small firms. In addition, lawyers may want to consider network monitoring, cloud-based software platforms, and comprehensive backup and retrieval systems. The key to successfully implementing the latter is to test your IT firm's ability to restore lost files.Sherri Davidoff is a nationally-recognized cyber security expert who is a founder and Senior Security Consultant at LMG Security. By placing a common, Linux-based, install environment onto the firmware of the switch, customers can deploy the Network Operating Systems of their choice onto the switch and do so whenever they like without replacing the hardware. The problem is, if this gets compromised, it also makes it possible for hackers to install malware onto the switch. Malware that can manipulate it and your network, and keep doing it long after a Network Operating System reinstall. With no secure boot, no encryption, no authentication, predictable HTTP/TFTP waterfalls, and exposed post-installation partition, ONIE is very susceptible to compromise. And with Network Operating Systems such as Switch Light, Cumulus Linux, and Mellanox-OS via their agents Indigo and eSwitchd not exactly putting up a fight with problems like no authentication, no encryption, poor encryption, and insufficient isolation, this is a real possibility. In this session, we'll cover the weaknesses in ONIE, ways to reach the platform through these Network Operating Systems, and what can happen if we don't properly protect the Control Plane these switches run on. I'll even demonstrate with a drive-by web-attack that is able to pivot through a Windows management station to reach the isolated control plane network, and infect one of these ONIE-based switches with malware, malware that's there even after a refresh. You'll even get the source code to take home with you to see how easily it's done. Finally, we'll talk about how to compensate for these issues so that your network doesn't become infected with and manipulated by this sort of persistent firmware-level malware. And with all the major vendors onboard, it will soon be supporting networks everywhere. But current implementations are full of weaknesses that could easily turn this utopian dream of the future into a nightmare and leave networks world-wide exposed. With clear-text wire protocol implementations, little support for switch TLS, no authentication for nodes, poorly conceived rate-limiting features in the controllers, controller APIs that don’t require authentication , and back-door netconf access, the leading platforms Floodlight and OpenDaylight, are ripe for attack. And in this session, using a new toolkit that I developed, I’ll demonstrate by showing you how to locate and identify these controllers, impersonate switches to DoS them, and engage their wide-open APIs and backdoors to map the network, locate targets, and control access to the network … even hide from sensors. But all is not lost, because I’ll show how to protect them too. Because dream or nightmare, SDN can make a difference in the real world if we just protect it right. In this episode we talk about Chris Gerling attending the SANS Cyber Defense Initiative 2008 in Washing DC.  He will be taking the Security 508 Computer Forensics, Investigation, and Response course.  If you are at the conference please make sure you look for Chris.  He also plans to take the new GPEN test while there.  We might be bringing the sock monkey to Shmoocon and have him do some interviews. We also spoke about how few businesses are actually checking a persons signature or id for credit cards.  Most businesses are simply not checking the cards like they should be. Chris is beginning to wonder if they will card his fiancee between now and when they get married. After the break we came back and mentioned that we were not going going to drop the Fbomb for 40 bucks as was hinted at in the chat room.  Went into the issue of dns forwarding being done on  CheckFree.com The article was actually from The Washington Post by Brian Krebs.  Anthony put a shout out to Ed Smiley for sending both Mubix and Anthony a copy of  1password.  It was a Great hookup.  Then we covered various apps on the IPhone.  We touched on what the encryption is on a 3g network.  We found a great powerpoint slide show explaining it. After the last break we went into firewall set ups.  Everyone but Anthony is running FIOS so the discussion on how to set up the coax or ethernet wan links ensued.  You will just have to listen to it to see what kind of sense it makes.  We did get lots of comments from our faithfull in the irc channel (irc.freenode.net #Securabit).  From there the show just went down hill with strippers and alcohol. Don't forget to give us a feedback on Itunes so we can bump the old shows off the list. Thanks again for all the donations for the Tip Jar.
