Elana Levin from Graphic Policy Radio returns to the show for a deep dive into the second wave of Ska music, a brief but influential era when black and white UK musicians fused Jamaican dance music of the sixties into punk and new wave music of the seventies to create a sound that would further revolutionize American popular music in the nineties. The modern ska genre gets made fun of a lot (mozzarella sticks, anyone?) but Elana will have you know that ska music is not a joke. In an 18-month period, 2 Tone Records, an indie label founded by the keyboardist from The Specials, Jerry Dammers, took over the UK pop charts with major distribution support from Chrysalis Records. In the wake of the election of Margaret Thatcher and the rise of white nationalists taking advantage of national economic malaise, a musical rebuke of these trends came from bands in the town of Coventry, offering alternative visions of racial harmony and anti-fascist songs you could dance to. The 1981 concert documentary Dance Craze, recently restored, captures the 2 Tone bands performing in their prime. We discuss the evolution of ska, pay tribute to some of the top groups of the Second Wave Ska era including The Selecter, Madness, Bad Manners and The Specials and bid farewell to their lead singer the late great Terry Hall, whose passing last year inspired this episode. Like the bodacious ‘dos from which the sound gets its name, “hair metal” can be a hard genre to pin down! Luckily, we've got writer/podcaster/critic/organizer and hair metal fan Elana Levin to run through two genre classics to help set some things straight! Matt and Elana cover Def Leppard's “Hysteria” (the one with “Pour Some Sugar On Me” on it) and “Long Cold Winter” by Cinderella (one of the bands featured in HBO's Peacemaker TV series). In this episode, they chat about what makes hair metal so special and popular, what role Peacemaker played in popularizing some under-heard hair metal bangers, and why neither of them like “Pour Some Sugar On Me” very much. Few genres of music are as critically maligned as the Hair Metal genre, also known as Glam Metal, a term invented to distinguish “Legitimate Heavy Metal” from the poppier and more ridiculous guitar rock performed by men with big hair who wore “feminine” makeup and accessories and performed power ballads. The music writer and podcaster Elana Levin joins the show from Brooklyn to discuss the lineage of Hair Metal, how it functions as camp, the importance of pop music as an influence on the sound, the controversial content that earned the wrath of the censorious PMRC in the eighties, and spotlight some of the best bands and songs from the era that deserve more attention (Cinderella, Ratt, Kix and Faster Pussycat.) And we explore how the sound of eighties Hair Metal influenced adult contemporary and country music in the nineties. This week we're breaking the first two rules and talking about Fight Club with the amazing veteran podcaster Elana Levin. Raz was getting over COVID so their voice is a little rough, but we had a great time talking about this classic movie, which actually has some decent lessons for organizing. And a lot of very powerful anti-lessons too. We got into the queerness of this film (happy Pride Month!), how it's been embraced by the manosphere and evangelical Christians, how to keep your movement from turning into a death cult, and Brad Pitt's power over straight men (we even got Elana's husband, a certified Straight Man, to weigh in on the latter). This week’s episode, The Unicorn in Captivity is a perfect illustration of why we do this podcast: it is rich with Christ symbolism and Kubrick references. The episode is named after and significantly features one of a series of High Renaissance unicorn tapestries I just so happen to have studied, set in NY’s none-more-goth museum, The Cloisters. This is the Venture Bros. podcast for people who want to dig into the narrative parallels between our two unicorns; Rusty Venture and The Monarch as well as the symbolism, the history and philosophical questions raised by the hit Adult Swim cartoon. Steven Attewell examines the episodes’ commentary on sci-fi genre paradoxes via Warren Ellis and Fantastic Four comics. Abbott is about a female journalist of color in 1970s Detroit named Elena Abbott who investigates a series of grisly crimes the police have ignored—crimes she recognizes to be the work of a dark magical force—the same force that murdered her husband 10 years ago. As she looks for clues, Abbott puts herself in the crosshairs of a mysterious power out for more blood, all the while navigating a harsh social environment that’s structured to protect the powerful, and prevent access to change. Published by BOOM! Studios, Abbott is written by Saladin Ahmed with art by Sami Kivelä. Saladin Ahmed joins Graphic Policy Radio this Monday to discuss this series and more! Saladin Ahmed is the author of the Hugo and Nebula-nominated Throne of the Crescent Moon, praised by George RR Martin as 'a rollicking swashbuckler.'
