Geez, I thought I'd met some bad eggs in the online dating world... Tracy Hall's experience sure takes the cake though. In 2016 she met Max Tavita online and for the next 18 months they built a seemingly solid relationship with great plans for the future. Until... she woke up one morning to a Crime Stoppers video of him being arrested. Turns out, Max Tavita wasn’t Max Tavita at all. His real name was Hamish McLaren (or Hamish Watson, or Hamish Maxwell pending which day you spoke to him) and he was one of Australia’s most prolific con men. He’d stolen millions from multiple victims and Tracy Hall was his last. Her savings, her trust, her sense of safety, all gone in a blink. We talk about the layers of betrayal, the grief of losing someone who didn’t really exist, the shame, the unraveling of trust - not just in others, but in herself. We unpacked shame and how it isolates us not just from the world, but from ourselves. And how, sometimes, telling the story is the only way to stop shame from tightening its grip. This is one of those conversation that had me feeling like I was watching a movie, rather than speaking to a human about real life... But sometimes that is real life, isn't it? The premiere of CBS's Watson happened this Sunday night, and the bull pups of the John H. Watson Society stayed up late to give it an immediate review. After so many high dog biscuit ratings for Sherlock & Co. on this pod, how will the full John H. Watson Society come down on a new Watson for 2025? You'll find out . . . eventually!
This week it's scam awareness week and last year, $2.7 billion was lost to scammers in Australia. That's more than $5,200 per minute – and that's only the scams we know about. So many more would have kept quiet. That's why I'm excited to be talking to Tracy Hall, who in 2017 discovered the man she'd been dating for two years, Max, was one of Australia's most prolific con men – Hamish McLaren. Also known as Hamish Watson. Also known as Hamish Maxwell. During our chat, you'll hear just how much she lost, red flags to be aware of, what to do if someone you think is being scammed, how to move on from the shame of being scammed and so much more. Tracy's story highlights that it doesn't matter her you're from, how you were raised or educated or how intuitive you think you are – anyone can fall victim to a scam. The boys are back to talk Darts, Dublin and Domestic duties, as Max finally completes his incredibly protracted house move....somehow thanks largely to his cutting loose with a hand saw...which gives Ryan an idea! Also in this episode, recorded at the start of the week but unfortunately delayed due to technical reasons, the boys dish out some now not so hot takes on recalls for Manu Tuilagi, Harry Randall & Hamish Watson
Fellow Scotland international, Hamish Watson joins The Big Jim Show. We touch on Hamish's impressive career, the iconic mullet, discuss the modern day effects of trial by social media, and what is Finn Russell like as captain? Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.

Join us as we take a look back through the best moments of 2022. From Matt Fagerson winning player of the match at the Calcutta Cup, Mike Adamson talking through the highlights of his referring career, Heather Lockhart reviewing the World Cup in New Zealand, Hamish Watson exploring his journey to the international stage to remembering Tom Smith and Doddie Weir OBE.
Shaun and Thala let Kooks join the pod after serving his podcast suspension to review the weekend's rugby. This week's First Phase question was about combining different aspects of our favourite rugby players to create a Rugby Frankenstein and the results were terrifying! We reviewed the opening weekend of the Rugby World Cup, which included a brave performance from the Springboks against France, Ruby Tui and Portia Woodman being unfair against Australia and a last gasp win for Wales. We then turned our attention to Week 4 of the URC and South African teams' first losses against overseas opponents. We talk about what the Sharks can learn from the Stormers, the Bulls best backline combination, the Sacha Mngomezulu hype train picking up speed and what Hamish Watson did to make Ruan Venter so mad. We do a roundup of the weekend's Premiership, Top 14 and NPC results and we end with some rants from Kooks about Ben Smith bait tweets and Thala about the competitiveness of the URC.
Chris Jones is at the URC launch day to chat to some big names ahead of the new season. He's joined by the European Player of the Year Josh van der Flier to discuss a memorable year, including that famous series win in New Zealand. Jonathan Davies tells us about his summer in Canada and his desire to get back in the Wales team. Hamish Watson reflects on Scotland's tour of Argentina and his hopes with Edinburgh this season. Plus, we hear from URC CEO Martin Anayi on the impact of the South African teams and his ambitions for the league moving forward.
Special Podcast Edition: Journey to the International Stage Elite ball carrier and one of world rugby's most exciting openside flankers, Hamish Watson sits down with Scotland legend, Chris Paterson, to explore his rugby career thus far. They explore the highs and lows of international rugby and candidly discuss Watson's childhood, motivations in life, and journey to the Scotland team.
The full squad is joined by chief rugby Twitter pot stirrer AP Cronje, as he continues to offend rugby fans throughout the British Isles in our URC quarterfinal previews. In the Bulls v Sharks game, we debate what the Sharks game plan actually is, their lack of fluency in attack, the importance of Thomas du Toit, the emergence of Johan Grobbelaar and the Bulls ability in the lineout. For the Stormers v Edinburgh game, we preview the titanic scrum battle between the two, look at Deon Fourie v Hamish Watson and expect to see a flurry of tries from the two best attacking teams in the URC. In the Ulster v Munster game, we look at the importance of Peter O'Mahony and Nick Timoney and the midfield battle between Damian de Allende and Stuart McCloskey. Finally we give Glasgow very little chance of upsetting a wounded Leinster team (which probably means Glasgow will now win). We also discuss some of the lesser known players we think will steal headlines this weekend which include Johan Grobbelaar, Phepsi Buthelezi, James Hume and Canaan Moodie. In our First Phase segment we discuss players we didn't rate but have surprised us with how good they are.

Hamish Watson: Elementary, My Dear Watson by Looseheadz
We're back, and we're going global. With Will and Richard calling in from Rome, we had our first Scottish player, @hamishwatson07, on the pod for a chat this week. We discussed his origins at Oakham and Leicester Tigers Academy, before moving onto dabbling in Sevens. We heard about his mixed emotions surrounding his Scotland debut when they lost to Italy, but also talked about moments of pure elation and joy in beating England at Murrayfield. Warzone has been a popular pastime in lockdown, despite Hamish having a dubious loadout. Thanks for listening, and as always - spread the word. #scrum #bass #pints #IPA #Kilkenny #CamdenHells #timothytaylorslandlord #lager #rugby #rugbylife #rugbyunited #podcast #podernfamily #isolation #rugbypod #houseofrugby

On the 20th of June this year, con-man Hamish McLaren was sentenced to 16 years in prison after stealing more than $7.5 million from his victims, including his ex-wife Bec Rosen. Today on No Filter we're revisiting Mia's chat with Bec. The first time Bec Rosen met Hamish McLaren she thought he was a bit of a tosser. Bec was a single mum who had just ended a bad marriage and, along with her three young sons, she’d moved to Blueys Beach on the NSW North Coast. Bec’s family were in the early stages of rebuilding their lives when Hamish appeared and made himself indispensable. So indispensable in fact, that Bec and Hamish got married in 2011. And that was when Bec started to uncover the extraordinary lies her husband had told and the twisted secrets he was keeping from her and her boys. If you've listened to the podcast Who the hell is Hamish? You already know a bit about Hamish McLaren...or Hamish Watson...or any of the other names he used. But you haven't heard all of Bec's story. Welcome back to what we like to call Castology, because that is the name of our podcast. This week seems to be our Punctuation in Podcast Titles Week, as we bring you recommendations of RISK!, Philosophize This! and Who The Hell is Hamish? As always, Liz, Patrick and Zane then move on to reviewing what they recommended last week.Liz Recommends - Who The Hell Is Hamish?https://www.theaustralian.com.au/podcasts/podcast-who-the-hell-is-hamish/news-story/c95b519a9ececa6076df80bd130ba158He was born Hamish Watson, a surfie dude from Sydney – but he could morph into whatever you needed him to be.Hamish is due to be sentenced to jail in early 2019 for swindling a handful of victims out of more than $7m. But these crimes are just the final pages in a resume too thick to staple; for decades he’s duped victims in the US, Canada, Britain, Hong Kong and Australia. How did he do it? How did he evade authorities around the world for so long and what’s he done with all those tens of millions of dollars he stole? From The Australian newspaper comes this podcast that does a deep dive into just who the hell Hamish whoever his last name is, well is, and the extent of his crimes and deception is mind boggling. For Both: Start from the start because it's a serial podcast.https://podcasts.apple.com/au/podcast/who-the-hell-is-hamish/id1451470931Pat Recommends: Philosphize This!https://philosophizethis.org/He was born Stephen West and I think remains so. Stephen likes philosophy and wants you to also like philosophy as well. Each episode is delivered in delicious 20-30 minute bite size chunks, and each episode covers a philosophical movement or philosophical philosopher. Each episode often leads into the next one so I find it best to binge these in chunks. For Zane & Liz: I started with The Frankfurt School and binged form there, but start wherever you wish.https://podcasts.apple.com/au/podcast/philosophize-this/id659155419Zane Recommends - RISK!http://risk-show.comThis is a podcast that Zane has been listening to for YEARS. He was an early adopter of the podcast and has fallen in and out of love with it many times over those years. RISK! is a live show and podcast where people tell true stories they never thought they’d dare to share in public, hosted by Kevin Allison. The award-winning live show happens monthly in New York and Los Angeles and has featured people like Janeane Garofalo, Lisa Lampanelli, Margaret Cho, Marc Maron, Sarah Silverman. For Pat: RawFor Liz: Frighthttp://itunes.apple.com/WebObjects/MZStore.woa/wa/viewPodcast?id=334724074Subscribe to us on ITUNES, STITCHER, SPOTIFY, RADIOPUBLIC or your podcatcher of choice.Find us on FACEBOOK, TWITTER or INSTAGRAM.
It's taking all my strength to resist making a “throw another con on the barbie” joke, so why fight it: today Eve and I are talking about tragedy vampires on today's episode, starting with the latest limited series from The Australian: Who The Hell Is Hamish?. How did Hamish Watson con so many people? Where did all that money go? And what makes Greg Bearup and The Australian's narrative construction so perfect for the story it's telling? Later, we return to 2012, and 9/11, with Angelo Guglielmo's documentary on 9/11-survivor faker Tania Head, The Woman Who Wasn't There. It's a trim 64 minutes that we both enjoyed...but what got left out? Guglielmo set out to make a film about Head's primacy in the 9/11-survivor world; what changed? Does she have emotional Munchausen's? And...where is she now? All that plus a newsletter launch, in The Blotter Presents, Episode 097. Support the pod/site on Patreon! SHOW NOTES Who The Hell Is Hamish? The Woman Who Wasn't There David Dunlap's piece on Tania Head Best Evidence Special Guest: Eve Batey.

Skiing was Hamish Watson's great love. Before he was a puffed-up futures trader in Sydney, he was a pumped-up muscle-bound ski instructor, in Australia and Canada. The ski fields of Canada were his home away from home, a place where he could show off the millions he'd stolen. He flew in on private jets, he bought properties, he handed out Rolex watches and he regaled the locals with tales of life as a billionaire who was mates with Tom and Nicole. But it wasn't all play and no work for Hamish in Canada. He stole millions, roping in a high end car dealership, and drawing the attention of a spy and a former Australian Prime Minister. See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.
