After almost two years of going back and forth on every layer of this deal, it is finally complete. Xbox owns Activision Blizzard King and have massively expanded both the IP as well as talent under their possession. Now, the real work begins! As Phil Spencer says he's going to begin visiting all these teams, gamers have many burning questions! What is the future of exclusivity for the many upcoming Activision games? Will Xbox dig into the massive backlog of titles at their disposal? How will the integration of Activision games in Game Pass work? With a sense of finality, we can begin to answer those questions. That wasn't the only massive news this week as Bethesda's Pete Hines is leaving Bethesda after spending 24 years there. With Will Shen out too, many are wondering if it's time to worry about folks jumping ship. The Dukes are here to settle things down. Otherwise, we dig into Halo Infinite's resurgence, Starfield being one of the best selling games of the year, and much more! The 8bA Podcast is a podcast bringing you the latest and greatest geeky news of the past week.NEWS ITEMSBandcamp. The Verge reports that roughly 50 percent of staff at the indie music platform were effectively laid off as part of the company's sale to Songtradr. Songtradr has not voluntarily recognized Bandcamp's unionization efforts at the time of recording. Employees who were not extended offers from Songtradr will be eligible for severance, according to the platform's previous owner, EPIC.Bethesda. The Verge reports that Bethesda's head of publishing, Pete Hines, is retiring. Hines has been with Bethesda since 1999, when he joined as Senior VP of Global Marketing and Communications. He is best known as the public face for the Fallout series.Candela Obscura. Polygon reports that Darrington Press's Illuminated Worlds TTRPG will be released on November 14. The game features the Victorian gothic setting of the Fairelands, and the players are members of a secret society that investigates strange occurrences and dangerous magick. Critical Role has both a how-to-play video and an actual play series to showcase the game. The book will have two versions - a standard hardcover for $40 and a limited edition hardcover for $60.Fallout. IGN reports that some of the cards and mechanics from the upcoming Fallout commander decks for Magic: the Gathering were revealed. The four decks will feature Dogmeat in a Naya deck revolving around Auras, Equipment, and Junk tokens; Caesar, Legion's Emperor in a Mardu deck revolving around token generation; Dr. Madison Li in a Jeskai deck focusing on energy counters; and The Wise Mothman in a Sultai mutant deck that tries to proliferate rad counters. Of particular note are cards like Rad Storm (3U, Instant; Storm, Proliferate), Nuka Cola Vending Machine (3, Artifact; 1,T: Create a Food. Whenever you sacrifice a Food, create a tapped Treasure), and Crucible of Worlds (3, Artifact; You may play lands from your graveyard).Junk tokens are an artifact that lets you exile the top card of your library to play that card until the end of your turn. For Radiation, if you have any rad counters at the beginning of your precombat main phase, you mill that many cards and lose 1 life and a rad counter for each nonland card milled that way.Magic: the Gathering. Polygon reports that Wizards of the Coast will be consolidating Draft Boosters and Set Boosters into one product, called Play Boosters, in 2024. The change will begin with the Murders at Karlov Manor set. The price will match the cost of a Set Booster and contain the following: 6 slots for common cards, 1 slot for a common or card from The List, 2 slots for uncommons, 1 slot for a rare or mythic rare, 1 slot for a basic land, 1 slot for a non-foil wildcard, 1 slot for a foil wildcard, and 1 slot for an ad, token, helper, or art card. Wizards is hoping this will reduce the burden of carrying multiple SKUs on local game stores. Longtime players will note that the game has only had different types of boosters for a few years. Pokemon. Polygon reports that the Van Gogh Museum will no longer offer a special Pikachu promo that ties in with its Pokemon exhibit due to safety concerns. Scalpers and fans ransacked the gift shop in a manner befitting a stereotypical Black Friday doorbuster sale. The museum said the card will be made available for purchase at the Pokemon Center online store and participating Dutch retailers, but will never again be available at the museum.Super Mario Bros. Wonder. Mario's next adventure is now out to widespread applause. Ars Technica notes that the game is like “somebody at Nintendo asked, ‘What if we made a game where every level was like [infamous SMW2: Yoshi's Island level] Touch Fuzzy, Get Dizzy?” GameInformer and IGN praised the creative Wonder effects and badges as mechanics to augment gameplay.LINKSWebsite: https://8-bitadventures.comPatreon: https://patreon.com/8bitAdventuresMerch: https://8-bitadventures.com/shopJoin the Discord: https://discord.gg/FAPKjjQ“1-UP” is by Professor Shyguy. Welcome to Dev Game Club, where this week we add an interview to our series on Batman: Arkham Asylum. Karl Stewart, Director of Marketing for Eidos at the time joins us to talk about the importance of the role and how it contributes to a product's success. Dev Game Club looks at classic video games and plays through them over several episodes, providing commentary. Podcast breakdown: 0:54 Interview 1:03:18 Break 1:03:51 Outro Issues covered: a full year, the early history of Karl, drawing anatomy, getting the fundamentals of brand and retail, listening to the team and developing the language and brand, breaking the assembly line, blurring the line between team and publisher, differentiating different types of creative director, developing trust, the usual separation of the two, how the marketing tells a story, translation without the input of creators, avoiding games that were moved too quickly, bringing confidence to the team, showing the publisher what they've got, creating a bond with the studio, publisher working with studio more closely, the superhero stigma, seeing the playable demo, the game influencing the brand, changing how people think about superhero games, maybe giving it back and arguing against, getting two covers, canning a Dark Knight game, discussing and selecting a logo, wondering about an opportunity, moving floors, controlling social from the studio, building a studio-centric model, working in the same world, handing your teenager over, having a push as a team for marketing, working to create the brand identity, going down the rabbit hole, taking a big expense, an Asylum ARG, challenging what we do, going different with the logo, a press event on Alcatraz, a ghost story, being immortalized, stuck in a cell, struggling to get marketing on board, bombing out Washington DC, everything is intentional, making a character relevant again, collaborating with other people and mentioning them by name. Games, people, and influences mentioned or discussed: Merchant Retail Group, Signature Brand Inc, Eidos, Square Enix, Crystal Dynamics, Petrel Marketing, Pure Imagination Studios, BAFTA, Thunder Child, 124, IGN, Tomb Raider (series), Lara Croft (Guardian of Light), ZX Spectrum, John Lasseter, James Song, Bob Lindsey, IO Interactive, LEGO, Bionicle, Ford, Age of Conan, Jamie Walker, Sefton Hill, Urban Chaos, Unreal, Phil Rogers, Andrew Reiner, Andy McNamara, Warner Bros, Rob Dyer, Loony Tunes, 300, Lee Singleton, Mini Ninjas, Battle Station Pacific, Jurgen Goeldner, Nathan Burlow, Matt Geyer, Remi Sklar, Carlos D'anda, Insomniac, Darell Gallagher, Rockstar, GTA, Tim Miller, Blur, Noah Hughes, Meagan Marie, Lars Winkler, Janet Swallow, LucasArts, Todd Howard, Phil Rogers, Yoichi Wada, Rich Briggs, Halo, I Love Bees, Lee Singleton, Trevor Burrows, Sarah Hoeksma, Philip Ser, Geoff Keighley, Spike TV, Star Wars, Republic Commando, Chris Williams, Bethesda Game Studios, Pete Hines, Fallout, Dr Dre Beats, Batman Begins, Kirk Hamilton, Aaron Evers, Mark Garcia. Another summer ends, that means its new game season, and to start it off we have my early thoughts on Starfield, which is definitely going to be one of my favorite games. We also have a potential third strike coming as SAG-AFTRA looks to strike against the video game publishers. Doug Bowser opens up about Nintendo's future, and Skull & Bones hits another hurdle. Adam Drive, Aaron Paul and others speak out against the AMPTP, Toho drops a big new Godzilla trailer, and Ahsoka was amazing. Also my top 10 80s animated movies gets a shoutout.

The latest development in the Xbox Activision deal is coming from Jim Ryan taking the stand. Those looking for FTC vs Microsoft live streams will have to accept breakdowns and summaries like mine. The FTC Xbox lawsuit has been ongoing and the discoveries have been alarming so we have had to cover it. We already look at the Matt Booty email along with the Pete Hines email in a previous stream. The most recent Xbox news is that they want spend Sony out of business through big acquisitions. While Jim Ryan is now not concerned about Call of Duty, his comments are revealing. The Xbox Activision Blizzard deal is facing more scrutiny as Bobby Kotick will take the stand today. If you are cheering for the Microsoft Activision Blizzard deal consider all the facts.
