180. Data Centers Consume 3% of Energy in Europe: Understand Geographic Hotspots and How AI Is Reshaping Demand

The POWER Podcast

The rapid rise of data centers has put many power industry demand forecasters on edge. Some predict the power-hungry nature of the facilities will quickly create problems for utilities and the grid. ICIS, a data analytics provider, calculates that in 2024, demand from data centers in Europe accounted for 96 TWh, or 3.1% of total power demand. “Now, you could say it's not a lot—3%—it's just a marginal size, but I'm going to spice it up a bit with two additional layers,” Matteo Mazzoni, director of Energy Analytics at ICIS, said as a guest on The POWER Podcast. “One is: that power demand is very consolidated in just a small subset of countries. So, five countries account of over 60% of that European power demand. And within those five countries, which are the usual suspects in terms of Germany, France, the UK, Ireland, and Netherlands, half of that consumption is located in the FLAP-D market, which sounds like a fancy new coffee, but in reality is just five big cities: Frankfurt, London, Amsterdam, Paris, and Dublin.” Predicting where and how data center demand will grow in the future is challenging, however, especially when looking out more than a few years. “What we've tried to do with our research is to divide it into two main time frames,” Mazzoni explained. “The next three to five years, where we see our forecast being relatively accurate because we looked at the development of new data centers, where they are being built, and all the information that are currently available. And, then, what might happen past 2030, which is a little bit more uncertain given how fast technology is developing and all that is happening on the AI [artificial intelligence] front.” Based on its research, ICIS expects European data center power demand to grow 75% by 2030, to 168 TWh. “It's going to be a lot of the same,” Mazzoni predicted. “So, those big centers—those big cities—are still set to attract most of the additional data center consumption, but we see the emergence of also new interesting markets, like the Nordics and to a certain extent also southern Europe with Iberia [especially Spain] being an interesting market.” Yet, there is still a fair amount of uncertainty around demand projections. Advances in liquid cooling methods will likely reduce data center power usage. That's because liquid cooling offers more efficient heat dissipation, which translates directly into lower electricity consumption. Additionally, there are opportunities for further improvement in power usage effectiveness (PUE), which is a widely used data center energy efficiency metric. At the global level, the average PUE has decreased from 2.5 in 2007 to a current average of 1.56, according to the ICIS report. However, new facilities consistently achieve a PUE of 1.3 and sometimes much better. Google, which has many state-of-the-art and highly efficient data centers, reported a global average PUE of 1.09 for its facilities over the last year. Said Mazzoni, “An expert in the field told us when we were doing our research, when tech moves out of the equation and you have energy engineers stepping in, you start to see that a lot of efficiency improvements will come, and demand will inevitably fall.” Thus, data center load growth projections should be taken with a grain of salt. “The forecast that we have beyond 2030 will need to be revised,” Mazzoni predicted. “If we look at the history of the past 20 years—all analysts and all forecasts around load growth—they all overshoot what eventually happened. The first time it happened when the internet arrived—there was obviously great expectations—and then EVs, electric vehicles, and then heat pumps. But if we look at, for example, last year—2024—European power demand was up by 1.3%, U.S. power demand was up by 1.8%, and probably weather was the main driver behind that growth.”

Abstract: Parkinson's disease (PD) is a chronic degenerative disorder of the central nervous system that affects the motor system. The discovery that PD motor symptoms result from the death of dopaminergic cells in the substantia nigra led to focus most of PD research on the basal ganglia. However, recent findings point to an active involvement of the cerebellum in PD. Here, we have developed a multiscale computational model of the rodent brain's basal ganglia-cerebellar network. Simulations showed that a direct effect of dopamine depletion on the cerebellum must be taken into account to reproduce the alterations of PD neural activity, particularly the increased beta oscillations widely reported in PD patients. Moreover, dopamine depletion indirectly impacted spike-time-dependent plasticity at the parallel fiber-Purkinje cell synapses, degrading associative motor learning as observed in PD. Overall, these results suggest a relevant involvement of cerebellum in PD motor symptoms. Copy rights belong to original authors. Visit the link for more info Podcast created by Paper Player, LLC

Storia dei Carabinieri
Episodio 60.

Play Episode Listen Later Apr 12, 2023 17:29

Sensory prediction error drives subconscious motor learning outside of the laboratory

Link to bioRxiv paper: http://biorxiv.org/cgi/content/short/2023.02.22.529399v1?rss=1 Authors: Albert, S. T., Blaum, E., Blustein, D. Abstract: Sensorimotor adaptation is supported by at least two parallel learning systems: an explicit strategy which is intentionally controlled, and an involuntary implicit learning system. These two systems are generally studied in laboratory settings using visuomotor rotations, studies that have shown subconscious learning systems to be driven in part by sensory prediction error (i.e., the mismatch between the realized and expected outcome of an action). Here we used a ball rolling task to explore whether sensory prediction errors can drive implicit motor adaptation outside of the standard and highly constrained laboratory environment. After application of a visual shift, participants rapidly adapted their rolling angles to reduce the error between the ball and target. We removed all visual feedback and told participants to aim their throw directly toward the primary target, revealing an unintentional 5.19 degree implicit adjustment to reach angles that decayed over time. To determine whether this implicit adaptation was driven by sensory prediction error, we tested participants in a second paradigm similar to Mazzoni and Krakauer (2006) in which participants were given an aiming target that would 'solve' the visual shift. As expected, the aiming group showed no difference in implicit learning but developed a larger explicit strategy than the control group. Remarkably, after rapidly reducing ball rolling error to zero, rolling angles in the aiming group gradually drifted over time, resulting in an overcompensation of 3.28 degrees beyond the target (and towards the aiming target). This involuntary drift in rolling angle, which resulted in worsening task performance, is a hallmark of implicit learning driven by sensory prediction error. These results show for the first time that implicit processes driven by sensory prediction error studied in the laboratory actively contribute to motor adaptation in naturalistic skill-based tasks with more complex body motion. Elisabeth (Elise) C. Terlato has worked in the wine industry for five years now, joining the family's company in October of 2018 as the Associate Marketing Manager. In this role, she was responsible for marketing and managing Terlato Wines International's Estate Division portfolio of brands, including Terlato Vineyards, M. Chapoutier, Mathilde Chapoutier, Domaine Terlato & Chapoutier, and Anselmi. Elise is the fourth generation to be involved in the family business, along with her sister, Jo, and brother, Tony. In 2020, Elise was promoted to Digital Marketing Manager, responsible for managing and growing the DTC business through e-commerce, social media, and various other digital platforms. In 2021, she spearheaded and managed two large-scale projects: the renovation and launch of Terlato.com and the Uncorked.com websites. In 2022, Elise advanced to Marketing Manager for Terlato's Direct-to-Consumer (DTC) side of the business. In this role, she is responsible for all direct marketing from family wineries, which includes increasing, creating, and analyzing promotions and programs to drive the Terlato Wine Group's (TWG) e-commerce business, assisting in all electronic and physical communications (including newsletters and websites), managing and executing content, driving business to websites, and managing all loyalty and club programming. Prior to joining Terlato, Elise worked at Foote, Cone & Belding (FCB) Global Chicago for three and a half years, where she progressed from an Assistant Account Executive to Account Executive. At FCB, she managed clients such as Choose Chicago, Bioverativ, and Johnson & Johnson. Additionally, she produced advertisements for high-profile brands such as Mazzoni and Adelphi scotch whisky, which were published in national beverage publications including Wine Spectator, Wine & Spirits, and The Tasting Panel. Elise also has experience working at Modern Luxury Publications in their marketing department. During her internships at the Il Poggione and GAJA wineries in the Tuscan and Piedmont regions of Italy, Elise studied the retail and production sides of the wine industry. She holds a bachelor's degree from Florida's University of Miami and is continuing her wine education with a WSET II (Wine & Spirits Education Trust) certificate and diploma in Wine Management and Gastronomy from Le Cordon Bleu in London. In this episode… For more than 50 years, Terlato Wines International has been influential in the wine and spirits industry. They introduced Pinot Grigio to America, revolutionized different varietals, and became a well-loved legacy brand. But they've never stopped looking for the next best thing for consumers across the globe, which is why they've grown year after year.  According to Elise Terlato, much of the brand's success comes from the ability to adapt, utilize cutting-edge technologies, and meet the consumer where they are. The digital world will only continue to expand, so it's crucial that wineries — including legacy brands — learn how to navigate this space and build their online presence. So if you're a brand that wants to embrace digital and reach a wider audience, what does Elise recommend?  In this episode of VINTed, Scout Driscoll is in conversation with Elise Terlato, DTC Marketing Manager at Terlato Wines International, to talk about legacy brands, marketing to the modern consumer, and getting involved in the digital world. Elise shares how Terlato is elevating and partnering with other brands, their strategies for connecting with younger consumers, and their mission to promote sustainability through their wineries and vineyards.
