Delivering insights or research reports is a key function of our roles as Games User Researchers. Unfortunately, it is far too easy to get stuck in a loop of presenting a piece of research then fading into the background until the next research request comes around. But is the research deliverable itself the only and best way for us to show our value? Join Lanie and Steve Bromley in this episode as they discuss how we as researchers can and should find opportunities to provide greater impact and bring influence beyond the report at the end of a test. They discuss how they've seen success in approaching their role with the mindset that we can in fact be design tools. They'll share how they have been able to successfully leverage the entire timeline leading up to a test, during, and following the research deliverable to identify numerous opportunities to provide insights, increase influence, and deliver impactful deliverables alongside their stakeholders. Steve Bromley teaches people about user research for video games, and provides user research consultancy for games studios. Prior to this he was a senior user researcher for PlayStation, and started the IGDA games user research mentoring scheme. He recently released the book How To Be A Games User Researcher, and shares free regular games user research lessons at www.gamesuserresearch.com

Was also ist Crunch? I welcome Kate Edwards, game industry pioneer at Geogrify and Executive Director of the Global Game Jam. We start by discussing COVID-19 totally changing everything for her speaking and traveling work along with the Global Game Jam (recorded before the event). We then talk about her culturalization consulting and public speaking projects keeping her even busier now. Listen to her origin story about arcades, wanting to be an astronaut, Star Wars, going into Industrial Design, and grad school at the HITLab in Seattle. Hear how being a Cartographer started her career at Microsoft and translated into a new role as a Geopolitical Specialist. We then talk about consulting for Google, joining then leading the IGDA, Gamergate threats, 50 over 50 list, and mental health advocacy. We reflect on lessons learned over time, marketing yourself, imposter syndrome, networking, finding a mentor strategy, and future meetups. Listen to ideas for those working now, parallel career paths, autonomy, bad managers, and her love for Halo. Hear about working on Age of Empires, BioWare projects, the long road left with Diversity and Inclusion, and developer leverage against being exploited. We then explore games as human narrative, VR’s challenges, democratized dev tools, Tehran game dev, and the global game community. We then wrap up with a challenging situation back on Halo 2, games she’s playing now, how to find online, Mark Twain, not always comparing yourself to others, mentors, and having that creative drive to always get better. Bio: Kate Edwards is a 27+ year veteran and an outspoken, award-winning advocate of the game industry and the Executive Director of the Global Game Jam, as well as the former Executive Director of the International Game Developers Association (IGDA). Our guests for this episode are Boyd Gittins and his daughter Renee Gittins – the Executive Director of the International Game Developers Association (IGDA), an organization that supports and empower game developers around the world in achieving fulfilling and sustainable careers. In addition to leading the IGDA, Renee is also the CEO and Creative Director of her own indie game studio “Stumbling Cat” where she is leading her team in the creation of a new video game “Potions: A Curious Tale.” Renee is also a Forbes 30 under 30 honoree. We’re excited to be experimenting with a slightly different format in this episode by hosting both the father and his daughter. The episode starts with the conversation with Renee and then transitions to a conversation with her father, Boyd. Topics we discuss include: Renee’s perspectives on personal leadership How Boyd helped Renee to learn how to push through difficulties Boyd’s focus on encouraging effort more so than results And, a story about how Renee and her parents responded when Renee asked her elementary school teacher for extra math work and was told “girls don’t need to know more math”. On September of 2020, I did the keynote at the IGDA Leadership Day. This was an online event, organized by the International Game Developers Association. In this keynote, I talked about my view on leadership: what is leadership, and how game entrepreneurs and founders could take notice from examples, from history, on what it takes to be a leader.
Link to bioRxiv paper: http://biorxiv.org/cgi/content/short/2020.09.25.314252v1?rss=1 Authors: Feng, Z., Clemente, J., Wong, B., Schadt, E. Abstract: Cellular genetic heterogeneity is common in many biological conditions including cancer, microbiome, co-infection of multiple pathogens. Detecting and phasing minor variants, which is to determine whether multiple variants are from the same haplotype, play an instrumental role in deciphering cellular genetic heterogeneity, but are still difficult because of technological limitations. Recently, long-read sequencing technologies, including those by Pacific Biosciences and Oxford Nanopore, have provided an unprecedented opportunity to tackle these challenges. However, high error rates make it difficult to take full advantage of these technologies. To fill this gap, we introduce iGDA, an open-source tool that can accurately detect and phase minor single-nucleotide variants (SNVs), whose frequencies are as low as 0.2%, from raw long-read sequencing data. We also demonstrated that iGDA can accurately reconstruct haplotypes in closely-related strains of the same species (divergence [≥] 0.011%) from long-read metagenomic data. Our approach, therefore, presents a significant advance towards the complete deciphering of cellular genetic heterogeneity. Copy rights belong to original authors. Visit the link for more info

3D Artist at Zenfri Inc, and these days I do a lot of procedural / technical environment art with SideFX Houdini, Substance Designer, and Unity. I have a few years of experience in the 3D industry here in Winnipeg, having worked with Electric Monk Media and Tangent Animation in the past. I'm a DMD + 3DCG grad from Red River College too! I love finding ways to automate or improve the efficiency of art stuff, so I end up fiddling around with Houdini both at work and at home. I listen to a lot of metal, and play a lot PC games and Magic. I'm a big fan of dark coffee and dark beer, but not at the same time.
Matt, Brendan, Chris and James gather around their respective mics to discuss the biggest industry stories of the past week. Once again, we've refrained from commenting on the ongoing stories of abuse and harassment as we don't feel the podcast is the right forum for this discussion. But you can find our in-depth coverage through the links below. Ubisoft's Maxime Béland resigns amid abuse allegations Nintendo condemns abuse as allegations spread across Smash Bros. community Evo CEO dismissed, event cancelled amid accusations of misconduct and abuse Ubisoft to restructure its editorial team in wake of abuse allegations IGDA criticizes industry for ignoring harassment allegations Leaders, members, sponsors depart top WoW guild amid assault, abuse allegations EA urges employees to come forward with experiences of abuse The main discussion this week follows 2K Games' revelation that NBA 2K21 will be priced at $69.99/£64.99 -- $10/£5 more than the current gen versions. With IDG Consulting expecting more publishers to follow suit, we discuss the implications of a price hike for AAA games, whether it can be justified in a series so divisive over its use of microtransactions, and what this means for lesser-known and new IP trying to stand shoulder-to-shoulder with $70 established hits. In this first episode of a two-part series on diamond mining controversies, we examine this past May's heavily disputed report released by the DPA (Diamond Producers Association) claiming that mining is better for Earth than lab-creating diamonds. Part 1 features exclusive interviews with Anna-Mieke Anderson, CEO of MiaDonna and Company and Richard Garard, Secretary General of the IGDA.
In light of increased scrutiny around loot boxes in full-price games, Brendan and James discuss how in industry is (and should be) handling this divisive monetisation mechanic. During the episode, we touch on the dangers that legislation like that imposed in Belgium and the Netherlands pose to publishers, the IGDA's recommendations on how games firms can show it is implementing loot boxes responsibly, and the different mindsets the prevalance of this monetisation is creating among players. This week, we're joined by Geogrify founder and ex-IGDA director Kate Edwards to discuss one of the less-highlighted challenges of working in the video games industry: Ageism. Recorded at E3 2018, the discussion explores who is being affected by ageism in the industry, and the impact on both victims but also the companies neglecting them. Edwards also shares the process behind her recent 50 Over 50 list, which highlights both notable figureheads within the industry and those who have perhaps been denied the spotlight throughout their careers. Finally, she offers advice to industry members of all levels on how we can combat ageism. In this episode your co-hosts Tanja Falkner & Robert Rogge talked to Kate Edwards, independent consultant in her own company Geogrify and former Executive Director of IGDA. Kate is an expert in providing geocultural and geopolitical content strategies, and told us how her job allows her to mix two things she's absolutely passionate about - culturalization & video games. If you don't know what culturalization is you should definitely check out this podcast because a lot can happen if you're not aware of its importance, like having to fly to Dubai for damage control...
