Chicago has had a poetry scene for decades, going back to the 1980's when such events as the Uptown Poetry Slam began.  Chicago poetry has a unique cadence and flow that today is found almost everywhere.  Poet Howard Friedman has been part of the scene for some time now.   His approach to poetry is akin to the way Jackson Pollock would take on a canvas--stream of consciousness, take-no-prisoners sort of writing that eschews self-editing.  To look at his handwritten prose is to see hastily lettered words, much more akin to a typed page than cursive, writing.  It is that which makes his work so interesting.  The structure and presentation is down to what sort of pen flows easier across the paper.  Add to that the presentation, live on stage and the artistry of Friedman's work is totally revealed.   For the avid poetry lover--here is a slice of that deep-dish poetry that makes Chicago still the epicenter of the written and spoken word. Support the showWe are always grateful to have you listening to STRUNG OUT. • Olivia Fox Cabane explains how there are four charisma types according to the proportion of power, presence and warmth. The focused charismatic (who pays deep attention to others), the visionary charismatic (who communicates their infectious passion), the kind charismatic (who inspires with warmth and compassion) and the authoritative charismatic (who leads others with expertise and power). • Depending on your goals, you can play up your natural charisma strengths or seek to balance out your weaknesses. • To be socially and emotionally comfortable, plan ahead and make sure you're physically comfortable, which will remove barriers to charismatic connection. • Use ritual and visualization as a “social warm up.” Music, meditation, and affirmations can help you prepare. • Build presence with mindfulness. Slow down, breathe and anchor in the senses. Pause before you respond, and take conscious care of every detail of the interaction, including your verbal and nonverbal expression, appearance, and behavior. • Howard Friedman emphasized the affective, nonverbal expressiveness component of charisma. • Communicate with all your body and laugh openly. Speak with a dynamic, varied voice that changes in pitch, tone and expression. Use touch to bridge distance and create warmth, aware that the rules differ for men and women. • Speak less and emote more via facial expression. If you find yourself the center of attention, relax and don't draw attention to awkwardness, using humor to defuse tension. Use exaggerated, pantomime-like gestures and initiate contact with strangers. Finally, practice the art of “platonic flirting.” • Introverts can be charismatic, but they must do so on their own terms. The intersection of public health and data science can be controversial. How much do we value human life? Can we ever put a dollar sign on it, and what factors into that sum? These questions and more are tackled in today's episode with Howard Friedman.Howard Friedman teaches at Columbia University at the School of Public Health and The Data Science Institute. He is also the author of Ultimate Price: The Value We Place On Life.Listen as he and Greg discuss the morality of cases like the 9/11 compensation fund, OJ Simpson,5 and the tradeoffs that lead to these difficult decisions.Episode Quotes:What a monetary value on human life says:Some human beings, as it turns out, are valued at nothing. Whereas others, many, many millions. And you'll see this in the corporate world as well. The incredible range of compensation, depending on who was the victim. How do we get these numbers, value of a life:They're trying to simulate a world in which that person is no longer there and trying to estimate what is the economic impact on the family. And that's why they look at things like income. They do look at this question of dependents and you know, how many people were relying on that person's income. And then you start seeing the dotted-line calculation between that and how people start to think about life insurance. And the reason why is when you look into your life insurance, you start thinking about what is my value, what is my replacement value? If I'm not around, how much money will my family need in order to have the lifestyle they expect or simply to replace the income I'm earning. How the media adds value to certain lives:This is very much the case. And this is the America that we have to understand we live in. And the implications of it really are that some lives are more valued and more protected than others. They go hand in hand. That level of interest that comes from the media and the public, as a result, drives the allocation of resources. So these are true examples and measures.Show Links:Guest Profile:Faculty Profile at Columbia University's Mailman School of Public HealthHoward Friedman's WebsiteHoward Friedman on LinkedinHoward Friedman on TwitterHoward Friedman on Talks at GoogleHis Work:Howard Friedman on Google ScholarUltimate Price: The Value We Place on LifeThe Measure of a Nation: How to Regain America's Competitive Edge and Boost Our Global Standing

How much is a human life worth? Individuals, families, companies, and governments routinely place a price on human life. The calculations that underlie these price tags are often buried in technical language, yet they influence our economy, laws, behaviors, policies, health, and safety. These price tags are often unfair, infused as they are with gender, racial, national, and cultural biases that often result in valuing the lives of the young more than the old, the rich more than the poor, whites more than blacks, Americans more than foreigners, and relatives more than strangers. This is critical since undervalued lives are left less-protected and more exposed to risk. Howard Steven Friedman explains in simple terms how economists and data scientists at corporations, regulatory agencies, and insurance companies develop and use these price tags and points a spotlight at their logical flaws and limitations. He then forcefully argues against the rampant unfairness in the system. Readers will be enlightened, shocked, and, ultimately, empowered to confront the price tags we assign to human lives and understand why such calculations matter. Howard Steven Friedman is a data scientist, health economist, writer and artist. He teaches at Columbia University. Friedman received his Bachelor’s degree from Binghamton University in Applied Physics. He earned a Masters in Statistics and Ph.D. in Biomedical Engineering from Johns Hopkins University. There are many former military officers who are now at the C-Suite level.  Some Cameron-Brooks Alumni who have made the C-Suite level include Debra Crew, the former CEO of Reynolds American, Inc. and now President of Diageo North America; Anthony Noto, CEO of SoFi; Roland Smith, former Chairman and CEO of Office Depot; Howard Friedman, President and CEO of Post Consumer Brands; Andy Callahan, CEO for Hostess Brands; Chris Hsu, former COO and CEO of Hewlett Packard Enterprise and current founder and CEO of Zibo; John McGrath, CEO of Pactiv Evergreen; Bill Horton, CFO of Weber Stephen Products, LLC.; Michael High, Business Unit CFO of Shell Deepwater Gulf of Mexico, and many others.  We are proud to have been a part of their success. I am sure all of these C-level executives would say a big part of their success and career growth coincided with what they learned during their time as a military officer. In this podcast, I caught up with Michael High to learn how he used his military experience to become the CFO of a Shell Oil business unit that generates approximately $5 billion to $10 billion in revenue annually and accounts for 10% of Shell Oil's business. Michael is a former Army Military Intelligence Officer who transitioned from the military to business through Cameron-Brooks in 2005.  His career has spanned the globe to include assignments in Los Angeles, Texas, The Netherlands and New Orleans. Despite having only two Accounting classes in college, Michael found early success in his career leveraging his people leadership, problem solving and other soft skills to develop a track record of success.  He also maintained the mindset that career progression is not always linear. Rather, careers have periods of plateaus for building experience. After being patient, that experience would pay off in exponential career growth and promotions. For Michael, his experience launched him into a C-Suite level role. Michael shares his lessons learned in career management and how he mentors junior leaders in his company.  Enjoy the podcast and be ready to learn from someone who has rapidly and humbly achieved career success in business. Howard Friedman is a data scientist, health economist, and writer with decades of experience in both the private and public sectors, as well as academia. He is widely known for his work as a statistical modeler and he currently lives in New York City and teaches at Columbia University.  Howard's new book, Ultimate Price: The Value We Place on Life, is about how the monetary values assigned to our lives by governments, medical professionals, and insurers can determine who will survive during times of crisis.  We talked to Howard about different models for the valuation of human life and how the crisis has revealed many opportunities for improvement.  The conversation’s content is sobering, but Howard keeps things light, whenever possible. How much is your life worth? And why? Everyday decisions made by governments, businesses and individuals place a price on human life. Your personal price tag is made up of the economic and social value, but the calculations behind these figures can be complex. My guest on the podcast today is data scientist and health economist Howard Friedman. His academic work includes teaching at data science, statistics, and program evaluation at Columbia University. Howard has authored or co-authored over 100 scientific articles and book chapters in areas of applied statistics, health economics and politics. In his new book, Ultimate Price: The Value We Place on Life, he explains in simple terms how economists, corporations, regulators, and insurance companies make and use these price tags. He illustrates how chauvinistic, white supremacist, or elitist values are reflected in the value we place on life. Here’s my conversation with Howard Friedman, author of Ultimate Price, in episode 495 of Informed Choice Radio.

He then argues against the rampant unfairness in the system. Readers will be enlightened, shocked, and, ultimately, empowered to confront the price tags we assign to human lives and understand why such calculations matter. Join host Elise Marquam Jahns and guest Dr. Howard Friedman - author of "The Longevity Project" which was based off of the most extensive longevity study ever conducted. This project demonstrates to us what really impacts our health and lifespan - such as friends, family, personality patterns, and work.  The results of the research provide compelling evidence that some of our commonly held beliefs about what contributes to living a longer life are false and often offer surprising conclusions.  Dr. Friedman is Distinguished Professor at the University of California in Riverside and served as Editor-in-chief of the Encyclopedia of Mental Health. Dr. Friedman is the recipient of two major career awards: The Outstanding Contributions to Health Psychology Award from the American Psychological Association; and James McKeen Cattell Fellow Award from the Association for Psychological Science (APS). President Donald Trump inherited an open seat on the Supreme Court and more than 100 federal judicial vacancies. How will his appointments to the bench shape the future of the judicial branch in an increasingly diverse and pluralistic America? Some of the country's most hot-button issues wind up before a court, and religious groups on all sides of those debates have a stake in the outcomes of those future court battles. We will explore the lasting impact Trump's appointments will have on the law of the land in America. Moderator: Kelsey Dallas. Speakers: Robert Alt, Susan Becker, Howard Friedman.

It is often said that “America is the greatest nation on Earth,” but is it true? In an election year, this sentiment will be expressed even more frequently by the presidential candidates, but how well does the US stack up on key quality of life issues when compared to other nations? While complete objective comparison may not be possible, there are certain areas where quantitative analysis allows for direct comparison. Join United Nations statistician and health economist Howard Friedman for an analysis of five key measures of quality of life—health, safety, education, democracy and equality. How well does the US compare to thirteen other countries around the world? There are valuable lessons to be learned from the experiences and solutions found in other leading countries.
