The impacts of climate change that probably worry people the most are irreversible changes that affect the entire world, such as a collapse of the west Antarctic ice sheet, shutdown of the global thermohaline circulation, loss of the Amazon biome, or a melting of Arctic permafrost.Sudden, unpredictable and irreversible changes can happen in response to a gradual warming. What is known about these risks at 1.5°C, 2°C and higher levels of warming? This lecture was recorded by Myles Allen on 5th March 2024 at Barnard's Inn Hall, LondonThe transcript and downloadable versions of the lecture are available from the Gresham College website:https://www.gresham.ac.uk/watch-now/tipping-pointsGresham College has offered free public lectures for over 400 years, thanks to the generosity of our supporters. “The future is positive. Unfortunately, so many children are being taught that we're destroying the planet, mankind is responsible for all the problems in the world. We can use our intelligence, make the world a better place to live in harmony with it” There's an intense amount of focus on climate change in the media and almost all of it paints humanity as a the culprit, forcing people, especially the younger generations, to develop a negative perspective on society, our leaders, and our collective future. We hear a lot from politicians and scientists about longterm solutions but the sense of despair and cynicism persists. Last week's guest, Lynne Twist, raised the point that so much of humanity's financial resources are lost to fear. What if, rather than focussing on our failures and promoting the notion that change is difficult, we focus on our potential. Today's guest believes the future is positive. Jeff Krehmer is a visionary mechanical engineer who's mindset and courage to step forward with optimism and a solution is what this world needs. Jeff believes we can use our intelligence to make the world a better place. He talks about a technology called Polar Energy Platforms or PEP that harness the energy of the ocean to provide electricity for the whole planet while simultaneously contributing to global cooling, global food supplies, and ecological balance. To learn more about Jeff's revolutionary ideas, read his new book, Infinite Resources: How To Sustainably Develop The Arctic By Supplying Green Hydrogen, Fresh Water, And Healthy Food To The World, While Mitigating The Negative Effects Of Anthropogenic Climate Change, go to infiniteresourcesbook.com. Welcome back Beauty's and Rockstars to another episode of Between the Benches with RallSauce. This week we had on a Nashville Predators player Michael McCarron. Michael started his hockey career playing for the US National Development organization. It got him ready for the OHL. Where he got to play for the famous London Knights. After playing for London for 2 years he was traded to Oshawa. While playing for Oshawa he won a Memorial Cup! After his stellar career in the OHL he was drafted in the 1st round 25 overall in the 2013 NHL Entry Draft to the Montreal Canadians. He then went on to play for the St. John's Icecaps. After playing most of the season there he got the call to the Big Boys. Playing for the Montreal Canadians where he scored his first goal. After that he bounced around the AHL. Then he found a new home. A team that gave him a chance to play his own style in Nashville for the Preds. This was a very mint episode were we really got to know Michael. Well see you next week Beauty's and Rockstars enjoy this episode as much as I loved interviewing Michael McCarron.

It's another fun filled episode of Blind Guys Chat and this week the Guys are once again talking to their favourite member of the band ‘The Metabolics'. Yes, it's Professor Luke O'Neill. The Prof tells us about the current state of COVID19 in Ireland and the research going on around the world. He also speaks to us about watching telly after his vaccination, and his good time band, The Metabolics. The Guys give us their views on the COP26 summit and their enjoyment of the mild weather in November. Stuart is trying to convince Jan & Óran that Facetime isn't all that bad for music and video streaming, but they're only willing to try it if Stuart plays Pink Floyd instead of all those showtunes he loves. We have a query from someone who would like to learn the piano, and Jan has a surprise for Óran & Stuart, spoiler alert, Jan is learning the black & white notes also. In our email section, Adele has a message for The Blind Guys, Otis Mac Stroupy-Pants has had to put on the heating in Baltimore, and we have a “blindie tip” from Blind Gordon who has finally found a reason to use Windows Narrator. So, throw away those used antigen tests, switch off the water pump, tell those shouty kids outside to go to bed, and have a listen to the most gratifying, scrumdiddlyumptious, thigh-slappin' podcast in this galaxy… …Blind Guys Chat.
Remote and wild, Antarctica is a spectacular place that most people on Earth won't ever get to. But it's a frontier for scientific research – and something we are very passionate about as The Royal Institution of Australian is the Australian Antarctic Division's Education partner. Today Cosmos journalist Lauren Fuge speaks to Professor Nicole Webster, who took up the role as the chief scientist of the Australian Antarctic Division this year. Webster completed her PhD at James Cook University in Queensland, investigating the microbial ecology of a Great Barrier Reef sponge, before transitioning into Antarctic science, including studying microbial communities as indicators for human-induced stress in the Antarctic marine environment. In this discussion we learn about what kind of research is undertaken on this frozen continent, from the smallest krill to the largest ice sheets, and what it might teach us about our future on this planet.Find the science of everything at the Cosmos Magazine website Subscribe to Cosmos Magazine (print) or the Cosmos WeeklyWatch and listen to all our Cosmos BriefingsSpecial 10% discount on Cosmos magazine print subscriptions (1 or 2 year), or 1 year Cosmos Weekly subscriptions for Cosmos Briefing podcast listeners! Climate Change is a harsh reality and it is getting closer than we think. Coastal cities are in great danger because of rising temperatures in the oceans. Mumbai, which is on the Arabian Sea, is going to be particularly hit by the effects of climate change, like many other cities, like many other coastal cities of the world. A few days ago, the civic authority, i.e. the BMC, announced the creation of a climate adaptation and mitigation plan and invited experts to submit ideas and proposals. One of those who attended was Nikhil Anand from Mumbai, an Assistant Professor in the University of Pennsylvania and an environmental anthropologist, and author, whose research focusses on cities, infrastructure, state power and the environment. Four years ago, Nikhil's award winning book 'Hydraulic City: Water and the Infrastructures of Citizenship in Mumbai' was published by Duke University Press. He is currently writing a new book 'Urban Seas'. He joins host Sidharth on this episode to his plan and proposal to the BMC for their plan to fight climate change, the effects of climate change we are already seeing in cities like Mumbai, and more.Follow Nikhil Anand on Twitter: https://twitter.com/liquidpersonFollow Sidharth Bhatia on Twitter and Instagram @bombaywallahbombaywallah and https://instagram.com/bombaywallahYou can listen to this show on The Wire's website, the IVM Podcasts website, app on Android: https://ivm.today/android or iOS: https://ivm.today/ios, or any other podcast app.
