The transition from military to civilian life is the principle focus of our regular Havok Journal update with Editor Scott Faith. The transition can be more difficult for some than it is for others. Scott himself is retiring from the Army soon after 28 years in service. Several articles on the topic have been published on Havok Journal and we discuss highlights of each. “Observations of a Transitioning Officer – Time to Go” by Josh McKaskill “A Green Beret Leaves the Service – How to Ruin Your Transition in Five Ways” by Marshall McGurk “Veteran Nonprofits: The Backbone of Military Transition to Civilian Life” by Megan Thatford The Havok Journal started the 2nd Mission Foundation specifically to help members of the military or first responder communities to make their transition. “A lot of time Vets think they have to do it alone and that is absolutely not true..there is a lot of support out there.” We also talk about a recent article by Ayman Kafel called “Fellow Police Officers ..It's OK to Die in Defense of Others.” May seem controversial but once one gets passed the headline Ayman is really discussing a mindset that is important for police officers. “If you aren't willing or mentally prepared to make the ultimate sacrifice, then find another line of work because people's lives depend on you.” He proposes that a mission first attitude needs to be adopted by more police agencies. Anyone interested in potentially writing to Havok Journal is encouraged to contact them through their website. TAKEAWAY: “A retirement ceremony is the professional equivalent of a funeral because your career is officially dead at that point.”

Growing up as one of four children on a sheep farm in southern New South Wales, I think I always knew that it would not be me that was coming home to work as the 'farmer'. This was never implicity suggested, it was just a feeling. For females who've grown up on a farm, I'll bet many of you had the same feeling. Today's guest Jess Howard certainly did. She grew up on a farm in western Queensland and a career or life in agriculture didn't quite feel 'right' to her - but with such a strong attachment to the land and place where she grew up, this has always been an uncomfortable feeling. As she carved her path in jobs and vocations internationally, there was always a yearning to return home, to be able to 'contribute' to agriculture and her family's long held love of life on the land. Is this a feeling you've ever had? I most certainly had. Here are my musings on this - Just because you don't want to be a 'farmer' does not mean you don't want to be a part of the life on the land, to help build up the industry at large, the communities that live there and do something with your talents that honour your family's values and business direction. Up until now, it's been hard for families to recognise, support and celebrate the multitude of skills that could be put to good use in an agricultural operation. Don't get me wrong - this is definitely changing now, but it's a quandary that's been felt by women all over, and at a very deep level. If you're not a 'farmer' then your not really involved. I'm not sure if this is making sense, so I'll let you listen on this conversation with Jess Howard, editor of Bush Journal and one of the women of the Bush Collective - an instagram platform celebrating the beauty of bush life through incredible photography, seriously there's nothing second grade about this account. You can pre-order the Beauty in the Bush Collective's hard cover book - Bush Life here.

Show Notes: https://wetflyswing.com/38 Editor of the FlyFish Journal, Steve Duda is on the podcast today to talk about how he became the editor of a unique fly fishing magazine, his passion for banjo and punk rock and why it's all about the experience for him. We talk about the Burning Pram Party, the Swallow Story, woman in fly fishing, conservation and politics. We pretty much cover it all and is now a pleasure to share this one with you. Show Notes with Steve Duda ay Nicholas was on the podcast in episode 3 and talked about fly fishing for chinook salmon in the estuary. Steve plays banjo in a punk rock band. Here's a clip from a show. I note that April Vokey is on the podcast next month and we talk about how amazing it is to see a new woman's movement in fly fishing. The FlyFish Journal publishes a conservation piece in every edition of the magazine. Here's a link to a recent example. The swallow story that Steve reads on the Fly Tapes Podcast. Here's a link to the reading. The Babine fish story that I noted as told on the Tell Tale Fisherman at this link. I interviewed Tim Rawlins, the Line Speed Jedi in episode 27 here. Steve has written for the Boise Weekly, Rolling Stone, the Huffington Post and interviewed bands and has generally just been writing. South Sound Tug and Barge is a 3 piece folk and punk band is Steve's band where he tours throughout the year. Jay Johnson notes the biggest difference between a good nympher and a great nympher is another piece of weight. John Gierach in fly fishing, Sparse Grey Hackle, Mary Oliver, Jim Harrison were other writers that influenced Steve. Trout Bum may have been one of the big books that really grabbed Steve. Just 2 days ago John Gierach just sent Steve an article for the 10th anniversary. The Burning Pram on the Yakima River in October is a great desert party and something I hope to attend this year. This also includes the all breed dog race for a chance at glory. The best flies when fishing rainbows for Steve is a quigley cripple off of the back of a caddis, the beadhead pheasant tail. Episode 39 of the podcast is all about Tenkara and is one technique that is a little controversial within fly fishing. I noted Fly Fish TV old timer Gene Hering, who is still selling fishing DVD's but in the middle of a media world that is transitioning. Oman GT's is in a new episode of the Journal. Steve will be focusing on their vimeo channel which you can find here. You can reach Steve at Steveduda@TheFlyFishJournal.com here or on instagram here or at the South Sound Tug and Barge where he plays punk-folk music. Conclusion with Steve Duda I want to give a big Thank You to Steve for coming on the show and sharing his perspective on fly fishing. The the Burning Pram to punk rock to swallows, Steve takes us into the mind of someone who has made a career out of writing.
