Across the world, the collective carbon emissions of sports is equal to that of a mid-size country, which makes Indianapolis – a city contending for the title of sports capital of the world – an ideal testing ground for environmentally-friendly protocols that could be scaled nationally and possibly even internationally.  To get a sense of just how massively influential sports are not just as an industry but as a platform, Jay speaks with Roger McClendon, executive director of the Green Sports Alliance. Roger informs Jay that the Alliance's sustainability work on this past year's College Football Playoff Championship saw a staggering 80% diversion rate of methane-emitting waste from landfill, while shedding light on a need for new green jobs and infrastructure capable of reusing the materials that go into live events. Susan Baughman, president of the 2022 CFP Indianapolis Host Committee, tells Jay that pulling off the most sustainable championship in the event's history was a team effort that can serve as an inspiration for other cities to recreate and improve upon. Speaking of improvements, Jay hears about how Indianapolis has been scaling its efforts year-over-year by speaking with Jessica Davis, director of the IUPUI Office of Sustainability, which serves as the boots-on-the-ground when it comes to data collection and research. Jessica explains how the 2021 March Madness tournament established a precedent for sustainable sporting events, and how each successive event is only going to raise the bar and extend the scope of emissions that the city intends to offset. Next, Jay pops over to Lucas Oil Stadium to hear from Yogi Stephens of Sodexo Live! about how vendors are deploying best practices while keeping tens of thousands of hungry fans fed.  Finally, Jay concludes his nation-wide tour at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway, where he gets some sage advice from Penske Entertainment's first ever sustainability program leader, Logan Waddle, about how he successfully turned his passions for sports and the environment into a newly minted green job. It's hard to believe it's been a decade since Indianapolis hosted its wildly successful Super Bowl. Allison Melangton was at the helm of that effort as CEO of the Super Bowl Host Committee. The timing now couldn't be more appropriate to get her thoughts on what that game meant to central Indiana's sports and tourism fortunes – and what chance the city has of getting another Super Bowl. She also reflects on the thrill of Indy's successful and unique pitch to NFL owners. Melangton, former president of the Indiana Sports Corp, is currently senior vice president of Penske Entertainment, which owns the Indianapolis Motor Speedway (IMS). While Melangton may have changed lanes, she's still got the pedal to the metal. She lets us in on the latest developments at IMS and the IndyCar Series, including what the 2022 Indy 500 will look like and plans to integrate sports gambling. On the policy and hot topics front, Melangton shares her insights on fan engagement, esports and the benefits of a bid fund to help land major sporting and tourism events – which is currently in legislation before the Indiana General Assembly.

Allison Melangton is the Senior Vice President at Penske Entertainment, a job she specifically pursued to be the brains behind the Indy 500 operation. No small task. Given that she previously headed the host committee for the Superbowl in the past (making her only the second woman to have done so), she looked at the Indy 500 as just another exciting challenge, and planned the 100th running of the race flawlessly.  When COVID hit, like most of us, her best-laid plans were tossed out the window as pandemic guidelines shifted daily. How does she keep her cool when the puzzle pieces keep changing? By making Zero Excuses and planning for all eventualities.  Key Takeaways: Plan for the best, prepare for the worst You can't know everything Surround yourself with people who complement your skills Never be afraid to ask for help
