Kate and Mandy chat to Phoebe, Education Officer at Werribee Open Range Zoo and Zoos Victoria! Phoebe is a triple Pea - a qualified peacher, a Pea mum of two boys both diagnosed with autism and ADHD, and herself recently diagnosed with autism and ADHD. Phoebe is passionate about her job at the Zoo where she's been working for the past 16 years. School children from all across Victoria of all ages come to Zoo on excursions to learn about conservation, and Phoebe says that the environment can be particularly suitable and supportive for neurodivergent kids. Kate and Mandy reflect on how much the Zoo has meant to them personally, offering a safe, inclusive and consistent place to bring their peashoots and families over the years. Mandy recalls the Association for Children with Disabilities Dream Day at the Melbourne Zoo, which Phoebe says paved the way for the Zoo to improve inclusion and accessibility, including providing training for Zoo staff about Pea family needs, and installing Changing Places facilities at each of their four Victorian sites. The Zoo also now provides social stories and sensory maps to help prepare kids before they come to the Zoo on excursions. The Zoo is also very welcoming of adults with disabilities who come to the Zoo for time outdoors in a safe, welcoming and enjoyable environment. Phoebe also says that 10 percent of the Zoo's staff have disabilities, and they're improving their accreditation and hiring practices for volunteers with disabilities. Mandy, Kate and Phoebe also reminisce about the role the Zoo played during COVID lockdowns, where they opened up through digital programs and entertained everyone through the Animals at Home livestreams!Thank you so much for sharing your story with us Phoebe and reminding us all of how much we love our Zoos, and how they're safe, welcoming and accessible places for our Pea families. Jessica and Meg share personal stories about favorite childhood animals (not necessarily the birds they work with now) and how their love of animals led to  careers in zoology. Interested in working with animals? Discover the STEM connections with zoology and other animal-oriented career paths.Interested in ways animal training and human education are similar? Meg and Jessica share similarities as they unravel the techniques behind the Spirits of the Sky demonstrations. I've seen first hand how the wonder of the Australian birds is matched by the respect and care they receive from their human counterparts. We delve into the trust-building and training processes, talking about how positive reinforcement for our feathered friends is not just about performance, but about creating a harmonious space for animals to thrive. Do they have favorite birds? You'll have to listen to find out, but Jessica and Meg leave us in awe of the birds they work with. Their survival adaptations and unique behaviors remind us of our shared planet and the simple steps we can take to protect it. Climactic

It has been 160 years since Charles Darwin first published ‘On the Origin of Species,' detailing the amazing ability of living things to evolve through natural selection. Today, human activities and Earth's rapidly changing climate require that species adapt and evolve at an unprecedented rate in order to survive a great ecological disruption. What genetic tools are available to enable species to evolve? Which species are most at risk? How can we avoid a collapse in biodiversity, and what can humans do to help? Join us to celebrate the anniversary of Darwin's accomplishment for this very special participatory event, held in the 160-year old facilities of the Royal Society of Victoria, combining live music performance and discussion on the convergence of science and music, and the potential for species to evolve and adapt in a time of changing climate. This one-off event showcases the important research conducted by Melbourne scientists, along with cutting edge musicians and new music of artists drawing their inspiration and musical vocabulary from climate science. Comprising a quintet of some of Australia's leading musicians in an idiom-bending mix of live jazz, improvisation and contemporary classical, the Gene Tree Project sonically explore climate change science, and ‘re-tell' the story of the peppered moth. The original music draws upon aspects of evolutionary biology and species adaptation in response to changes in climate, and to themes of adaptation, extinction and resilience. Gene Tree ProjectGene Tree Project quintet are Elissa Goodrich (composer / vibraphone), Adam Simmons (saxophones / shakuhachi / bass clarinet), Gideon Brazil (saxophones / flute), Elliott Folvig (electric guitar) and Tamara Murphy (double bass). These critically acclaimed Melbourne-based musicians perform, compose and tour both within Australia and internationally in various contemporary jazz, experimental and ensembles and multi-artform projects. Speakers: Andrew PaskProfessor Andrew Pask is a geneticist in the School of BioSciences at the University of Melbourne. His research focuses on Evolution, Development and Reproduction, using marsupial, mouse and human models. Andrew's lab recently sequenced the genome of the extinct thylacine and is using this data to understand more about the biology of this unique marsupial predator. The Pask lab is also developing methods to examine the possibility of de-extinction for this species as well as tools to help preserve and conserve current threatened and endangered marsupial species. Amy CoetseeDr Amy Coetsee is a Threatened Species Biologist at Zoos Victoria, where she works on the Eastern Barred Bandicoot. Focussing on habitat requirements, threat mitigation and island releases, Amy's work has contributed to this marsupial being well on its way to recovery. How can we avoid a collapse in biodiversity, and what can humans do to help?Join us to celebrate the anniversary of Darwin's accomplishment for this very special participatory event, held in the 160-year old facilities of the Royal Society of Victoria, combining live music performance and discussion on the convergence of science and music, and the potential for species to evolve and adapt in a time of changing climate. The original music draws upon aspects of evolutionary biology and species adaptation in response to changes in climate, and to themes of adaptation, extinction and resilience.Gene Tree ProjectGene Tree Project quintet are Elissa Goodrich (composer / vibraphone), Adam Simmons (saxophones / shakuhachi / bass clarinet), Gideon Brazil (saxophones / flute), Elliott Folvig (electric guitar) and Tamara Murphy (double bass). These critically acclaimed Melbourne-based musicians perform, compose and tour both within Australia and internationally in various contemporary jazz, experimental and ensembles and multi-artform projects.Speakers:Andrew PaskProfessor Andrew Pask is a geneticist in the School of BioSciences at the University of Melbourne. Learn more at wires.org.au. Koala Hospital Port Macquarie: This koala hospital in New South Wales is accepting donations to fund the rescue, treatment and release of koalas, as well as research and education about koalas. The hospital said Sunday that it is "inundated with supplies to treat burnt koalas" and is now sending boxes of veterinary supplies to the state's south coast, according to the hospital's Facebook page. Donate at koalahospital.org.au/shop/donation. Australia Zoo Wildlife Hospital: Bindi Irwin, the daughter of famed wildlife conservationist and "Crocodile Hunter" Steve Irwin, has been taking in many displaced animals at the Australia Zoo Wildlife Hospital, which is owned by her mother, Terri. World Wildlife Fund Australia: This chapter of the international wildlife conservation organization is accepting donations to care for injured wildlife and, when the fires clear, to plant 10,000 native trees in critical koala habitat, including in "koala triangle," the heartland of Australia's healthiest wild koala populations. Donate at donate.wwf.org.au. Animal Rescue Craft Guild: This volunteer-run group with participants worldwide is knitting and crocheting protective pouches and blankets for animals displaced by the fires. One organizer told Reuters that the group has supplied thousands of rescue groups around the country. Check out the group's Facebook page. Australian Koala Foundation: This foundation allows you to "adopt" a koala through a symbolic foster program; your monthly fee funds protection efforts for wild koalas. You can also pay to "plant a tree" to help restore koala habitat. The foundation is also asking that Koala lovers to write letters to politicians in support of the Koala Protection Act. Marissa has published 18 papers and is internationally acclaimed for her conservation work on endangered species. Marissa's post-doctoral research examined assisted reproduction and novel techniques to maximise breeding success in captive breeding colonies of marsupials across Australia. She has more than fifteen years' experience in field work, five years in molecular genetics laboratories, and fifteen years in research and zoo captive breeding programs. Marissa has experience with a variety of wildlife and conservation programs in Australia, Asia, Africa and the Americas. She has a particular interest in the wildlife of South East Asia, having worked with conservation programs in Borneo and Cambodia, where she assisted with capacity building and wildlife research with Zoos Victoria's international partners. In 2007, Marissa started working at Zoos Victoria on the breeding program for the critically endangered Mountain Pygmy Possum. She joined Zoos Victoria's department of Wildlife Conservation and Science as their Reproductive Biologist in 2009. Marissa now works across Healesville Sanctuary, Werribee Open Range Zoo and Melbourne Zoo to improve sustainable zoo populations, reproductive research, and captive breeding and reintroduction success, particularly in threatened species. Marissa has recently been named one of National Geographic's Global Wildlife Talents, and this year was showcased as an Australian Science Hero by the Office of the Chief Scientist. She sits on a number of Threatened Species Recovery Teams and has a strong focus on endangered native marsupial, rodent and frog species to aid Zoos Victoria's commitment that no Victorian terrestrial vertebrate species will go extinct.

Success Stories from Catherine Robson

At a time of concern about the number of women progressing to the ‘top job’, Anne Ward is a welcome exception. Of the 7 organisations of which she is a director, she chairs the majority of them. Anne is chairman of Qantas Superannuation, one of Australia’s largest corporate superannuation funds which manages over $7 billion of retirement assets for its 33,000 members. She also chairs Colonial First State Investments, which manages over $100 billion of assets on behalf of around 2 million Australian investors. She is the chairman of both Zoos Victoria and The Centre for Investor Education, she is a director of MYOB, the Foundation for Imaging Research, and RMIT University. In this week’s Success Story, Anne shares with Catherine Robson how the most challenging board crisis she’s faced led to a deeper understanding of what it means to lead effectively and why saying no to opportunities could be the best thing for your career.
