City Scenes is the feature where we examine the music scene of a different city each week. As we go along we're moving through the alphabet from A to Z and this week we're on the letter F and today we're in Frankfurt Germany. Frankfurt is a city of 750, 000 people that sits on the banks of the river Main in Central Germany. It is a global financial hub with the european central bank and Deutsche bank as well as many other financial institutions holding their headquarters in the city. It's also one of the biggest transport hubs in the world, Frankfurt airport is the primary hub of the lufthansa airline and is in fact the airport with the most direct flight routes in the world. but as we will see, the city also has a wealthy cultural and musical history. It's the city where Johann Wolfgang von Goethe the famous German writer was born. It's also the birth city of Wolgang Flur, an original member of Kraftwerk but as Kraftwerk's music was all made in Dusseldorf we're not going to be hearing any of that today. Instead we start with some Eurodisco, a genre that seems to be a bit of a thing in Frankfurt. In the late 1970s, a multiinstrumentalist called Kurt Hauenstein, founded a group called Supermax. Supermax went on to produce some massive hits in the genre of eurodisco that saw the group touring the world. The next group we listen to could probably be summed up as Frankfurt's answer to ABBA. Arabesque emerged in Hamburg in 1975 and went on to get huge success around the world. Chilly was another eurodisco act that were active in Hamburg in the late 1970s They produced the mega hit called ‘For Your Love' which took off in discos around the world and has since been reinterpreted and remixed by DJs and producers countless times. Like in Chicago and in Detroit, the legacy of that eurodsicoinformed what came after it in Frankfurt. Like Detroit in particular, Frankfurt became a huge center for the newly developing sound of German Techno in the 1990s. Frankfurt these days is synonymous with electronic music. One act that blew up in the 1990s with their own type of eurodance, trance leaning techno pop is a duo called Jam and Spoon. So Frankfurt is a city known for its contributions to eurodisco and electronic music and one of Frankfurts biggest contemporary electronic producers is Isolee. We end this episode of City Scenes with a track of his called Allowance. For our fourth edition of the Equilibrisme Podcast Series we proudly present you Altitude / Matt Thibideau. Matt Thibideau is a Canadian producer, who has been involved in making electronic music since the late 90s. Originally from Wallaceburg, a small town located close to Detroit, and now based in Toronto, his first records as Altitude were released on Blue Recordings. Quickly, he began contributing to other local labels such as Chair and Cynosure Recordings. In 2001, he started together with his twin brother Mark, a new project called “Repair” It was dedicated to all of the old broken synthesizers that they had in their studio. The first songs were quickly signed to both Sub-Static records (Germany) as “V-Wreck” and then Dumb-Unit records as “Black Line Display”. Matt has performed live at several venues and festivals and focuses on using Analog and Digital hardware without a laptop. Throughout Matt’s Career, he has performed with the likes of Monolake, Deadbeat, Mike Shannon, Mathew Johnson, Daniel Bell, Krihan, S.I.T., Mike Huckaby, Octave One, Christina Sealy (Orphyx), Molly, Barbara Preisinger, Falko Brocksieper, Nicholas Jar, Eric Miller, Pantone, Akufen, Audio Werner, Raresh, Deepchord, Vera and Isolee amongst many others. Matt & Mark started a small label called “Obsolete Components” based on using his old synthesizers and recording equipment. They were also featured in the documentary “I Dream Of Wires”. Recently Matt has released both old and new music under the moniker “Altitude” for 7th city (Detroit), Assemble and Helena records , Vade Mecum and Irenic. In early 2018 Matt and Mark released a joined record for Joule Imprint in France called “Two sides” that followed a remix on Sushitech for Rhauder and Tikiman called “Stabilize”. This hardware only live cut was recorded 2019 in Toronto for our Equilibrisme Podcast Series. Enjoy!!!

The graduated sound engineer is certainly no stranger to quality music, having come into the realm of house and techno through his beginnings in blues and jazz guitar, an influence that has translated into a penchant for a certain swing, to be found in his own creations and those he selects. This is 'Coal', and due to the fact that good tunes are #fishinabarrel at the Miami moment, this is part one of a 2 mix series called 'Forged'. This instalment builds gradually from the atmospheric locked groove, through some down-beat disco soul vocals, underpinned by analogue basslines into a more anthemic and uplifting direction towards Track8. Allowance from the legendary Isolee takes on a more minimal but still melodic relaxed reprise, 'No more' lifts it up again until the direction tails off into some lovely electronica/breaks from Jupiter Jax.
