Before MF DOOM would become a pioneer of underground hip hop and would be recognized globally for his iconic Dr. Doom inspired face mask. Before MF DOOM went by the monikers Zev Love X, King Geedorah, King Ghidra, Viktor Vaughn, Metal Fingers, DOOM, Metal Face, or “Super Villain”.Before MF DOOM would pass away at the age of 49. The way 2020 had went - was wrong in many ways, that has been happening in the world hasn't been a major surprise. It's been injury after injury AND THEN to add insult to injury…was this…Doomsday. The year delivered one final blow to hip-hop fans when the wife of MF Doom, Jasmine Dumile, posted online on December 31 to share the news that her husband had “transitioned” two months prior on October 31, 2020. No further details were given. RIP MF DOOM.

He's known by many names: Zev Love X, Viktor Vaughn, King Geedorah, and more, but most people know him as MF Doom. Amidst the calamity of 2020, MF Doom, whose real name is Daniel Dumile, passed away in October. The world learned of his passing several months later when his wife informed his fans via a Facebook post. Stunned by the rapper's death and the strange way in which the news was revealed, Matt reacquainted himself with the mysterious MF Doom and his music while also introducing Tony to the apotheosis of Doom's career: the album Madvillainy. Released in 2004 to critical acclaim and instant cult classic status, Madvillainy was a collaborative album with producer Mad Lib. Matt and Tony talk about the slightly morbid prospects of catching up an artist after they have passed away, the complex history and self mythologized backstory to Doom and his many aliases, and the rapper's comedic delivery and endless well of complex rhymes.
Daniel Dumile, the masked rapper who performed as MF Doom and built a lasting underground fan base with his offbeat wordplay and comic-book persona, died on Oct. 31, 2020. He created his own universe of characters and their quips. King Geedorah, Viktor Vaughn. And then the collaborations with Madlib (Madvillain), Dangermouse (DANGERDOOM) and Jneiro Jarel (JJ DOOM). This episode digs into the rapper behind the mask and cherishes his every rhyme, as the bricks of a magnificent legacy.
A track from Common’s latest album feat Black Thought and PJ, plus Hip Hop from Strange U and Viktor Vaughn. Deep soul music from Sly5thAve feat Denitia, Mara TK and Master Soul Boy. Broken Beat from WheelUP feat Tiawa (who both have albums out this year on Tru Thoughts). Big Percussive Dancefloor Bass from Trends. Drum & Bass / Jungle from Roni Size, DJ Gunshot, Heist and Jonny Faith. A classic from Major Force on Mo Wax. A great tune from the latest Analog Africa compilation. Plus plenty more musical treats.

We’d always planned to do a hip hop episode after the Cocteau Twins, but after the sad passing of MF DOOM was announced on December 31st 2020, we decided to switch focus from The Cold Vein by Cannibal Ox to one of DOOM’s finest hours - Madvillainy by Madvillain. Madvillain is one of many collaborative projects that MF DOOM embarked upon throughout his career, with this particular one being his first collaboration with legendary undergroun hip hop producer/DJ/MC Madlib. One of Daniel Dumile’s many personas, DOOM was born out of frustration with the music industry, ad Dumile sought to “destroy that which had created him” following the death of his brother and the unceremonial dismissal of his first project, KMD by then label Elektra records. Until Madvillainy, we had only properly been seen on the first MF DOOM album Operation: Doomsday in 1999. After creating albums under the names King Geedorah and Viktor Vaughn in the period leading up to this record, Madvillain saw DOOM bring his “main” persona back into the spotlight, and there it remained until his untimely death last year. In this episode we cover DOOM’s career right up until 2004, whilst also waxing lyrical on the tendency of some journalists to project their own ideas onto art in order to cack-handedly “legitimatize” something that is already very legit. Part two is next week, and we’ll cover his career from DANGERDOOM onwards, and then get torn into Madvillainy.
In which we speak with actor and writer Todd McGinnis about his newly released book, Buzz Aldrin punching everyone in the mouth, the origin of the name Dangersplosion!, and how Brent is an ayahuasca shaman. All music (except a BroZone song) by MF DOOM (as King Geedorah, Madvillain, Viktor Vaughn, and Danger Doom). RIP to one of the greatest emcees ever.
Soul from Lianne La Havas, UNKLE feat. Eska, and Moonchild. Hip Hop from MF DOOM aka Viktor Vaughn and Duke Bootee (Rest In Peace) ...who wrote and performed on the classic Grandmaster Flash song “ The Message”. Percussive dancefloor grooves from Peter Luedemann & Pit Troja. Drum and Bass from Nu:Tone feat Lalin St Juste (from The Seshen), Mutt and Calibre. A great uplifting soul / funk track by Jelly reissued on 7” vinyl by Forever Love Records. Broken Beat from Sivey remixing Nikitch & Kuna Maze. Badbadnotgood covering a Johnny Hammond classic with MF DOOM on vocals. Plus plenty more musical treats.
Zed Love X, Viktor Vaughn, The Super Villain, Doom, MF Doom…

A special tribute to MF DOOM DJ mix this week. Includes his first ever feature as Zev Love X with 3rd Bass on Def Jam, the KMD releases with his brother and starting off with the classic Scooby Doo sampling track on the influential Fondle Em records. Collaborations as NehruvianDOOM (with Bishop Nehru), DANGERDOOM (with Dangermouse) and JJ DOOM (with Janeiro Janell) on Lex Records. The all time classic Madvillain (with Madlib). Features with Kool Keith and YOTA. A track from the excellent Viktor Vaughn album. Some of the original tracks as sampled on the releases are in the mix too. Celebrating some of the inspiring tracks from one of the best Hip Hop artists ever. Plus music from Nikitch & Kuna Maze (remixed by Sivey), IG Culture reworking a James Brown classic, a big tune from Trends, plus lots more musical goodness.
Howdy Hope all is well with you So, on New Years Eve we learned the sad news that Daniel Dumile aka MF DOOM had passed away, gone back to the essence. Had been a massive fan of his music from the KMD days but it was really when he created the DOOM persona he hit genius levels imo. A totally unique artist who will be greatly missed For this tribute I went deep into his catalogue, featuring music by all his personas, DOOM, Viktor Vaughn and King Geedorah, and some of my favourite guest appearances, working with other artists. Probably a mix more for aficionados than casual fans but if you're a first time listener, might be a good place to start. A man that has many personalities Zev Love X, King Geedorah, Viktor Vaughn, Metal Fingers, DOOM. He tends to bring his special brand of production and wacky, often funny, but always smart and always delivered from behind his metal mask. This week we dig into the villain inspired production of DOOM and dig into those for the samples. We will also hear a Sample Culture first interview from Roel van den Heuvel who took a long journey to dig for the Arrow Root/Next Levels sample. This was still in the age of dial up internet, so there was no streaming, social media, or internet memes yet; a stone age of sorts. Between 2001 and 2005, Adult Swim gave us a new kind of comedy show that wasn't just a sitcom, including Harvey Birdman: Attorney at Law, Aqua Teen Hunger Force, Sealab 2021, and The Brak Show (not to mention Space Ghost Coast to Coast that existed prior to that). By revitalizing old Hannah-Barbara animations and repurposing them into new shows, Cartoon Network was breaking ground with what could be done with intellectual property. These new shows were remixes of old beloved shows, which is why I think they pair so well with hip-hop, a genre that takes unused gems of music and gives them new life. In 2005, they decided to take this connection it's logical conclusion. Enter Dangermouse and MF Doom. Dangermouse has started his rise with the much-hyped "The Grey Album" (a mashup of Jay-Z's "The Black Album" and The Beatles' "The White Album"), but at this point is still underground, as he hasn't broken through the stratosphere with Gnarls Barkley yet. MF Doom is perhaps at the peak of his underground cred, coming off the heels of some of his best projects, King Geedorah, Viktor Vaughn, and Madvillain, as well as his most critically acclaimed MF Doom release "Mm... Food." The idea of Dangermouse, MF Doom, and Adult Swim combining their street cred to form this conceptual masterpiece is still completely baffling. It's very one-of-a-kind, capturing a moment of early Adult Swim and 2000s underground hip hop, and I don't think it will ever be done again quite like this (short of an actual sequel by DangerDoom)... Join Brad, Jon, and special guest Sam Bronn, as they go back to a simpler time... a time when you waited until a predetermined hour to watch your favorite tv show... #MFDoctorDoomMCU Next Up: (05-25-20) BONUS EPISODE Gorillaz - Demon Days (06-01-20) Iced Earth - The Glorious Burden SPOTIFY PLAYLIST NUMBER ONE: https://open.spotify.com/playlist/6Z67Ka5xedSfYIvWw6YNt4?si=GG5CAvtUQ0CWpr74gRn-_A Other Links: www.twitter.com/RevoloverAudio www.anchor.fm/AlbumConceptHour www.twitter.com/AlbumConceptPod www.myspace.com/AlbumConceptHour www.ko-fi.com/RevoloverAudio --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/albumconcepthour/support
