Band of Other Brothers is a stellar, multi genre supergroup whose members boast incredible associations with a Who's Who of A-listers. There's pianist Jeff Babko (Jimmy Kimmel Live, Sheryl Crow), saxophonist and woodwind wizard Jeff Coffin (Dave Matthews Band, Bela Fleck & the Flecktones), drummer Keith Carlock (Steely Dan, John Mayer), guitarist Nir Felder (Esperanza Spalding, Jack DeJohnette), and bassist, vocalist Will Lee (Late Show with David Letterman, The Brecker Brothers).   While they've joined forces before, this is their first holiday release.  It's called “This Year At Christmas” on Ear Up records, and offers Christmas standards delivered in a unique, and even unconventional manner, by this all-star group of multi Grammy®️ winning musicians. The album also features two very special guest vocalists, as well as Keith Carlock's own Carlock Family Choir, all highlighted by an amazing string ensemble that offers the perfect complement the joubilant selection of tunes.   My guests for this fun and more than occasionally frenetic conversation are Jeff Babko, Jeff Coffin, Nir Felder and Will Lee. Drummer Keith Carlock was tending to the reindeer and sadly couldn't join in the Christmas chaos.  Join me for a whimsical journey through the backstory behind this one-of-a-kind holiday release.

Session keyboardist Jeff Babko has a career that even he can't believe. His day job is playing keys in Jimmy Kimmel's band every night. Then, his side hustle on the weekends is as the musical director for Steve Martin and Martin Short on their tour. Those alone are incredible, but he also releases solo albums and has done sessions and tours with a bunch of legends. In this chat we discuss Huey Lewis, James Taylor, the Doobie Brothers, Sheryl Crow, Neil Young, Joe Cocker, Alanis Morissette, Smokey Robinson, Steve Perry, Colin Hay and Don Henley. He also plays on soundtracks for the likes of Scorsese and Nolan. On top of this, he's hilarious. You'll love this conversation about all of it and how it all even happened. When this episode was recorded, the writers and actors strikes were both still going strong with no end in sight, so resident keyboardist for the Jimmy Kimmell Show, Jeff Babko, was able to find time in his normally very busy schedule to rap with me. In fact, the Kimmell show is just a piece of his crowded schedule, which includes being the touring pianist on stage with Steve Martin and Martin Short, in addition to composing for movie scores like the new Weird Al biopic, Toy Story 4, Encanto, but also recording with James Taylor, Jason Mraz, Shelby Lynne, Simon Philips, Sheryl Crow-- not counting the folks he's played with on Kimmell. He's a funny man, driven to make music with whomever and in whatever forum is available, but usually includes incredible musicians like Vinnie Colaiuta, Jeff Coffin, Matt Chamberlain, Mark Isham and many more. He's a podcast host for the Caffeinated Keyboardist, owns his own studio Tudor Tones and is generally just busy because what in the hell else is there in this life but to make music. He's got a new record called The Libretto Show with bassist David Piltch and is generally just ready to rip at all times.

I'm flipping the TV channels when I see something that makes me have a flashback to my childhood. I remember standing next to my best friend Jeff Babko in the backyard near a kiddie pool. We loved putting on skits and performing at his house as kids. Then, we got older and lost touch as I got into softball and moved to Hawaii for college while he studied music in Miami. So imagine my surprise when I stopped on Jimmy Kimmel's show one day and saw a very familiar face. It was Jeff! I had to invite him on the show for a walk down memory lane. And he's got plenty of stories to share about his musical career and travels, working with other musicians, and especially collaborating with comedians like Steve Martin and Martin Short. We talk all about it, as well as performance (whether it's music, improv, or storytelling) and key elements necessary for making a connection with your audience. What you will learn in this episode: What role music plays in comedy and storytelling Why your audience matters in every performance  How you can best experience your own storytelling Who is Jeff? Born and raised in southern California, Jeff Babko has lived on the West Coast for his entire career of television, film, and live performances. After graduating from the University of Miami's Frost School of Music, he began touring internationally with Julio Iglesias, then joined the group, Toto, to tour Europe. He's also recorded and toured with musical stars like Smokey Robinson, Yo-Yo Ma, Frank Ocean, Sheryl Crow, Alanis Morissette, Willie Nelson, James Taylor, and John Mayer, among many others. On the TV side of things, Jeff's most significant work has to be the past 18 years as the musical arranger, co-composer, and house band member of Jimmy Kimmel Live. But he's always kept his toes dipped in comedy too. His TV work actually began on Martin Short's syndicated talk show at the turn of the century. In fact, he still regularly performs with Short and Steve Martin. Jeff has also been on the Emmy award-winning Wayne Brady daytime show and even worked as an Emmy show composer, arranger, and orchestra member for three years. People have enjoyed his performances at the 2012 Democratic National Convention and the White House for the Obamas and the Chancellor of Germany, Angela Merkel. His work is even featured on the musical scores of several movies like Toy Story 4, Frozen 2, and Pixar's Luca. But today, Jeff and his wife, violinist Songa Lee, produce music from their studio in the San Fernando Valley and regularly perform as a duo in Paso Robles, CA Links and Resources: Jeff Babko Storytelling School Website @storytellingschool on Instagram @storytellingSchool on Facebook

Jeff Babko is an in-demand pianist and keyboardist who has spent his life learning his craft and contributing to the music industry. He's toured the world, worked with huge artists, is a gifted recording artist, and is currently the music arranger, composer, and house band member on Jimmy Kimmel Live. Listen as he shares more about his journey and experiences in the music industry and his hopes for the future.    It all started at a young age for Jeff. He remembers always being drawn to music and more specifically by album artwork. He was fascinated by how the album artwork framed the musical experience that he had when listening to the tracks.    It wasn't long until he was learning various instruments and applying his natural curiosity to sound. He ended up attending the University of Miami's Frost School of Music and after graduating jumped right into working with Julio Iglesias on a series of worldwide tours. Given his young age, he says he didn't always handle those tours properly though grew and learned so much as a musician.    Being on the road 24/7 however, was not the life he wanted to lead which led him to looking for more session work. He's worked in house bands on TV shows since 1999 and is now also a highly sought after score composer and arranger for movies and television.   Listen as he shares more about his session work and career overall. He's digging deep into the experiences and how they've all moved him step by step to where he is today. His work is notable as is his presence in the industry and advice for up and coming musicians.    Show Highlights:   [00:10] Learn more about Jeff Babko and his distinguished career.  [01:44] How did Jeff and Peter Himmelman meet?  [04:23] More about why Peter is such an inspiration in the industry.  [06:15] Jeff shares the first record he ever heard and how it informed his experience. Steve Lukather aka “Luke” and Joseph Williams will release individual solo albums on February 26, 2021 via The Players Club / Mascot Label Group. Both artists have made significant contributions to the other's album. Earlier this year, the label presented “Run To Me” from Luke's forthcoming release I Found The Sun Again, which can be screened here: https://youtu.be/mvbHYmh7VYY. Today, the first reveal from Williams' album titled Denizen Tenant has hit streaming platforms globally. To hear the song, and view the video produced by the artist himself for “Never Saw You Coming” click here: https://youtu.be/FTJ5KHcnWiM Williams shares, “'Never Saw You Coming' is my first opportunity in ages to show my true sound.  Although my album is an eclectic collection of songs, this one tells you what you need to know to get a real sense of the whole. You can see where I'm going vocally for sure. It all starts with ‘Never Saw You Coming,' plus I thought it was time we had a cool sexy song about death! Enjoy…” Steve Lukather's solo album titled I Found The Sun Again was co-produced by Ken Freeman, who also both engineered and mixed the new collection of repertoire. The players feature many dignitaries that have been in Luke's life for decades. Amongst those are drummer Greg Bissonette, keyboardist Jeff Babko, and bassists Jorgen Carlsson and John Pierce. Life-long friend and Toto band-mate David Paich performs piano and organ across the album, while Joseph Williams sang on multiple tracks alongside writing string and horn arrangements and tracking keys on the aforementioned “Run To Me.” Both Paich and Williams co-wrote that specific composition, while friend and band leader of the All-Starrs, Ringo Starr makes a special appearance on the recording and in the video. Other co-writers include Stan Lynch, Jeff Babko, and of course Joseph Williams. Luke shares, “Never had so much fun recording in my life. Painless, fun and easy - and it just flowed.” The repertoire features five new original compositions, and three covers personally selected by Luke. Those are Traffic's “Low Spark of High Heeled Boys,” Joe Walsh's “Welcome To The Club,” and Robin Trower's “Bridge of Sighs.” Lukather offers in the liner notes, “ALL these tracks were cut LIVE - no clix - no fix - No rehearsal - one run thru - and record and the whole record was take 2. I did double a few guitar parts and ‘produced up' a few tunes that are obvious but in the same time frame. I recorded the lead vocal right after we got the take same day. One song a day. Joe took it home and did some BG vocals but that's it. I wanted to make as honest a record as I could in 2020 with 1970's inspiration, and recording values, and techniques with a modern sound. Ken did that!” A portion of the proceeds from this album will be directed to The Ed Asner Family Center for Autism. For more information please visit https://www.edasnerfamilycenter.org/.

He was playing clubs from the age of 16 and cutting his teeth in the Sydney music scene.  Then he decided he wanted to go to Berklee School of Music in Boston. So at the age of 20 he left Sydney for the US.  It was there that he met Meshell Ndegeocello who came to Berklee do do a masterclass and Abe was chosen to play with her. From there, Meshell asked Abe to join her band full-time which he still does to this day.  Abe has also gone on to play with Seal, Doyle Brahmall, Blake Mills, Pino Palladino, Madison Cunningham, Mike Elizondo, Jeff Babko and many others.  Abe and his friend Jake Sherman have their own original project called Jake and Abe.   Episode recorded 6/1/2020 in Sydney.   https://www.aberounds.com Abe's Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/abester8/?hl=en Jake & Abe: https://www.instagram.com/jakeandabe/?hl=en Innovative Percussion: http://www.innovativepercussion.com/artists/abe_rounds     -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Click here to securely donate to The Gig Life Podcast. As a two-time Grammy Award winning member of Bela Fleck & the Flecktones, saxophonist/composer Jeff Coffin has traveled the world leaving his mark as one of today’s most talented musicians. He has shared the stage with not only the Flecktones, but also with an amazingly diverse list of musicians, such as The Dave Matthews Band, Branford Marsalis, McCoy Tyner, Van Morrison, Lynyrd Skynard, The Wailers, Baaba Maal, J.D. Souther, Vinnie Colaiuta, and Indian guitarist Prasanna. Talk about diversity! On a personal level, Jeff is constantly reaching for the unique, both compositionally and also in playing technique. You see, Jeff is also well known for occasionally playing alto and tenor saxes simultaneously, creating double-impact performances that leave audiences breathless. His collaborations are just as interesting and unique. He’s a current member of the Mondo Trio with keyboardist Jeff Babko and drummer Vinnie Colaiuta, and also plays in the Jeff Babko Trio. Both eclectic bands seem to reach new heights in musical composition and experimentation. In the midst of it all, Jeff even performs in his own band, the Jeff Coffin Mu’tet, which takes it’s name from the word “mutation”, a descriptor that Jeff often uses to describe the ever-changing nature of music. By the way, his much anticipated 2007 solo record is soon to be released. We’re glad to welcome Yamaha and Vandoren Performing Artist Jeff Coffin to Inside Musicast.

Jeff Babko is one of the busiest and most sought after keyboard/piano players in the music business today. Although his name might not be a household word, it’s likely you’ve heard his music. Or, better yet, you’ve probably seen him playing in the band on JIMMY KIMMEL LIVE, every weeknight on ABC. Apart from his weeknight TV gig, Jeff is also one of the most talented jazz keyboardists on the scene, having toured with George Duke, James Taylor, Julio Iglesias, and has recorded with Larry Carlton, super drummer Simon Phillips, and most recently, Steve Lukather. He has three solo and collaboration albums to his credit and has currently released a new project with his new jazz band, MONDO TRIO, featuring Jeff Coffin and Vinnie Colaiuta, and himself. He’s definitely busy…creating great music. Inside MusiCast welcomes Jeff Babko.
